I grew up on hip hop but these days I'm mostly into dnb to the point where I'm now bringing DJs in from overseas. You've been given a lot of info but I'll try to add some. Like hip hop, dnb has so many sounds, it can be jazzy, hard, soulful, minimal, or whatever. Here are some recommendations:
- Hospital Records: http://hospitalrecords.com/ Pretty much the most accessible label out there. Their sound is liquid (melodic, electro, dance-friendly), but are pushing it with new signings such as S.P.Y. Their top artists include High Contrast, Netsky, Camo/Krooked, etc.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkENy3t_fgQ
- DJ Marky. Just about every thing he has touched is golden. Specifically, see these tracks: LK, Mystic Sunset, Love Affair, Fang Face, Tapestry, Togetherness, etc.
Mystic Sunset: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-wJZ-T8L1A
- Noisia. About as hard as it gets. But they are technically superb, and do it better than almost everyone lese. Look for tracks such as Monster, Stigma, Diplodicus, etc. Also see Dom & Roland.
Friendly Intentions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eyRyjtothY
- Calibre: One of the most respected dnb artists ever. Has a real soulful, sampled sound. Can be minimal and also goes hard sometimes. Flirts with dub and reggae influence. As long and respectable a career as anyone else.
All the Days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07qiN8FdaRs
- Atlantic Connection: North Carolina DJ who bridged the gap between hip hop and dnb with his Tomorrow's Not Enough album. Highly recommened. He has tons of great singles too.
Can't Destroy Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nihCGfhOfro
- Command Strange: this young kid from Kazakhstan is one to look out for. Only 20 years old, he already has TONS of releases. Mostly liquid dnb but is experimenting with heavier, tech sounds to good effect recently. Also see Random Movement and Intelligent Manners for similar sounds.
Double One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oznbf3NBm74
- Other classic artists: Bachelors of Science, Total Science, Matrix, Break, Pendulum, Marcus Intalex, Alix Perez (his 1984 album is spectacular), Benny Page, Greg Packer, Commix, Logistics, and I'll throw Callide and Tantrum Desire in there for a little jump up.
Enjoy!
