I went diggin'. I think we ought to have record stores if only for the community of buying music, but technology (and iTunes killed the record store) and it left the body in one of the houses like Marlo did on season 4 of the Wire.

Some of the BEST records I bought from that store, rare records in mint condition and great prices.

This is devastating to see, mostly because a heap load of people lost a steady income and what I could imagine, something they emotionally invested in.

Crazy times indeed.

Aron's made Amoeba a better store with healthy comp. I found so many gems there at reasonable prices. I miss going to back of the store to the used Hip hop vinyl.

12. "Add Homer's (Omaha, NE) on Saddle Creek to the list"
In response to Reply # 0

I mean, not only did the downtown Homer's in the old market flip suites from it's O.G. spot to a place right across from the vinyl-only store and much narrower, but the Saddle Creek location shutdown and that was the most R&B/Jazz/Rap oriented of the three locations in town. The building on Saddle Creek was the only one that was completely painted Homer's yellow and stood on its own rather than as a collective of strip-mall business and restaurants. It was the most unique of the three in Omaha even if it wasn't the most frequented. No one has stepped up to take it's place, so the past six months of driving past it have been filled with sad thoughts.

I'm only nearly 23 in more than four months though, so I guess I don't really relate to this post. Not all the way.

but that's not true...

for new stuff:

of the independents, Laser Land, and that guy in Bryn Mawr who was great in the mid-90s are long gone.

Of the chain stores, two Towers I frequented are gone, along with Wee Three and the two Sam Goody stores I'd hit.

Mad's in Ardmore went down sometime in the '00s. Shame as they were one of the few shops that really focused on stocking a great folk collection.

Of the used shops:

I haven't been to Philadelphia on a record shopping visit in a decade so I dunno what's still there (aside from the Repo store)

Repo's done very well, long since gone from the poor location where I first started shopping

Shady Dog seems to do really well too, doing a lot of business on the net but they've got the great reputation they deserve for physical shoppers too

Critter's, I never really shopped there too much when we were kids but eventually the owner got sent to jail for the upstairs operations

Plastic Fantastic is long gone but the owners opened up as Gold Million. Haven't been in there, didn't really like the guy even though I bought not just a large chunk of my vinyl collection but also my first house from him

Dude got sent to jail for selling drug paraphenalia. Articles online say it was 1999, but I would have thought it was way earlier.

maybe with the caveat that items are labeled as "tobacco products"

"Joblin also sold syringes and literature on planting, cultivating, growing, harvesting and manufacturing marijuana, heroin and psychedelic drugs, according to court documents" sure doesn't sound legal, however

the first one was just a door, so I have NO idea what shop that was...

and the second one of Rose Records. Shit, they went under in the 90's while records were selling like hotcakes ( I caught a "going out of business" sale back in 92). So if that was just a picture of a Rose Records shutting it's doors in recent years, I'm surprised it was still open anyway.

I'm just glad all my spots are alive and well. As long as I have Gramaphone, Dusty Groove, and GrooveDis, I'm strizzaight.

When those record stores in the malls started to disappear I knew why cause it's hard to keep paying the monthly rent these malls want cause they think the traffic is so great when half the time it's just that traffic but not buyers (and let's not forget the shoplifters that frequent malls).

at least is still a record store. Dimple now, R5 before that.

And Records aka the "endtroducing record store" moved next door. But with a lot less stock.

Still some hope.

I go into the ones out in Sunrise and Arden but I haven't been in the one that took over the old Tower building on Broadway. Is the set up pretty much the same?

And the stock ain't up there...YET I hope.

Arden Dimple is still my favorite. And they have that all-vinyl Dimple store around the back (in the old warehouse section?). Found some good stuff there.

On RSD I also checked out this place on K st called Phono Select. Not bad. Kinda hipster-y but they had some good stuff.

We've got the internet now.

Not one of them stores come even close to having the vast collection of music you can find on the internet. And from the comfort of your own home.

Cheaper too. hohoho.

And artists are making about as much money from the internet as they did from these record stores.

Put your hand up if you think Dave Brubeck is getting any money when you buy 'Take Five' from a hipster record shop for $30.

it was fun to just browse all that music. it was even more fun when i could listen to previews. of course, finding somethings to buy was the most fun part.

and there were magazines to read too. and books. all about music and/or the music biz. i could entertain myself for several hours in each of my favorite record stores. it wasn't always a solo endeavor - my friends and i liked to visit our favorite stores together. we're all music geeks. i was more geeky about music back then than i am now. i dunno how much if any of that reduction is attributable to the loss of my favorite stores.

yes, i can entertain myself similarly on the 'net. and i do. it's different fun.

fuck you.

and not show the original Tower Records across from the Tower Theater in Sacramento?

When this spot closed the whole city mourned http://www.rockandrollcollection.com/images/tower_records_pic_01.jpg

I'm afraid to even guess at the amount of money I spent in there over the years.

Russell Solomon's father owned which shared the same building and Tower name with the theater. He started selling records out of his father's drug store in the 50s then opened up the first Tower Records across the street in 1960.
