For me, this would be Gal Costa/Caetano Veloso's "Domingo" it is literally one of my favorite albums of all time and I love every single track and it is always in rotation. I have never even met one person, even on the internet, who loves this album as much as me lol

Triste Bahia, It's a Long Way, Neolithic Man..just one of the best albums ever. The percussion is ridiculous and the stripped down but intense performances and great arrangements make this a masterpiece of MPB.

To answer though, I'm not sure everyone considers that to be the height
of Sly's creativity.... even if they do, that doesn't mean that one would
aesthetically prefer it to the darker TARGO or the more upbeat and happy
DTTM. I'm one of the biggest Slyheads around and I personally prefer
A Whole New Thing, Life, and TARGO.. those would be my top 3 Sly albums,
personally. Don't get me wrong though.. I love Stand! It's just not
even in my top 3 favorite Sly albums. I love almost everything Sly ever released
though.

Anyone who's read a brief bio of Sly Stone would realize that "Stand!", not "Riot", was the height of his creativity. If nothing else, certainly of his sanity, his applied effort, and his cohesiveness. And what of the rest of the band?

Freddie Stone only once topped his riff on "Sing a Simple Song" with the one on "Thank You" that Janet Jackson yanked.

Larry Graham's solo on "I Wanna Take You Higher" is magnificence.

The singing is brilliant. The mixing is (almost) brilliant (third verse of "Higher", I laugh every time). On later records, there damned near is no band - Sly's playing many of the instruments himself, and even if he's not, the band/group dynamic is long gone.

Yeah I've read multiply bios on Sly. I tend to prefer his experimental
and more "artistically free" work over Stand! This would be the albums
AWNT and Life. They actually make for more entertaining listens for me.
When I read why these albums were so different, it made complete sense
to me why I preferred them.

Oh ok. See, I have a hard time separating aesthetics from music discussion.
We can say "Freddie had the greatest guitar solo ever on Take You Higher"
but that doesn't mean people want to hear the song (though in this case
it does because it's a great song). I'm just saying, you seem a bit
surprised that Stand! isn't universally considered the Opus of Sly
albums. Great mixing and awesome solos don't make songs more relatable.
Other Sly albums just seem to resonate with people more in spite of
Stand! being an awesome album. It could also have something to do with
it being so huge, giving people a reason to feel like they're truly
"down" by being more into the more obscure shit. ionno.

anything Marvin Gaye recorded before 1970 (which includes, mind you, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "How Sweet it Is", and "I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE", among others) - it's tolerated rather than revered, and pushed aside for discussion about what they _really_ wanna talk about.

While this is often excused with Gaye's stuff with lines about "well, he didn't write it" (oh, and Marvin wrote "What's Going On"?), "he didn't have creative control" (the only one I'll allow), etc. None of those excuses work with Sly & the Family Stone.

I think part of it is a general lack of taste for anything too "rock" sounding, and everything the Family Stone did pre-"Riot" was heavily rock influenced. There's also the unstated idea of praising an auteur over an ensemble - the pre-"Riot" Family Stone albums were actually _Family Stone_ albums, and that they turned out as good as they did depended upon a group effort. The same can't be said of "Riot" and can be said even less about everything that followed.

Maybe it's just the cynicism of the culture that appreciates the cynicism of "Riot" over the optimism of "Stand!" I've heard it said that "Riot" is more "honest", but at the time "Stand!" was put together in late 1968/early 1969, Sly believed in every word of the ideals he sang about on that album. He _was_ that positive, happy person. It was PCP and an increasing delve into coke during the two years that separated the releases that flipped him into the cadaver that appears on later releases. Not that hearing a man who sounds near suicide or overdose can't be fascinating - because on "Riot" and a good bit of "Fresh", it is - but why praise it so much over actual intended achievement?

I listened to them in order. I don't care if I get flamed for this, but I'll listen to "Life" before I'll listen to "There's a Riot Goin' On" any day of the week.

McCartney's second solo album RAM from 71 is in my top 5 albums, possible top 3 if I'm lifted and in the middle the 'Ram On > Dear Boy > Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey' stretch, but I don't know many people who even know the album, let alone feel the way I do about it.

(Granted, there's only so "obscure" one can consider an album by one of the most well known artists ever, but I still don't see it getting much love from fans or the media.)

lately it's been the works of Robert Brookins, like '81's MATINEE by his once-group AFTERBACH (kind of hard to believe he was 19 @ the time that was recorded), and his solo album IN THE NIGHT (@ 24, that's a damn good and mature record).

the works of Pages, a group headlined by Mr. Mister members Richard Page and Steve George, they had three albums from '78-81. On Soulseek, someone messaged me that the had played on those records, and had lost their cassette copies years ago.

I love everything you mentioned, and I intend to keep my ears open for the other stuff I'm not familiar with.

I'll say this though, thank god for Herbie Hancock for MANY things, but in this case thank god he was around to bully/convince Sylvester to sing in his baritone for "Magic Number". I love my falsetto singers, but Sylvester had one of the smoothest baritone voices ever, its a shame he didn't use it alot.

the first time I heard "Magic Number" I opened my eyes wide when I figured out who that actually was singing, and had this same exact thought.

it's funny, because his falsetto voice is his calling card -- but with that baritone, he sounds like a completely different person.

They got a bit of love for this when it came out 8-10 years ago, and everyone has forgotten it exists now. Lots of people were doing the layered pop sound back then and they're Australian, so I guess I can sort of understand it, but I think that album holds up against Summerteeth/YHF era Wilco or Soft Bulletin/Yoshimi era Lips, and kicks the ass of anything Beaulah ever did.

And I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in North America who feels that way.

... especially "Onde Eu Nasci Passa Um Rio". Along the same lines of Veloso and Costa, I loved "Doces Barbaros," but i think the supergroup only lasted for that one performance.

but my own immediate pick would be Blu's "HerFavouriteColor", which didnt have enough of the blu people were used to from BTH and such, but really launched his experimentation and exploration with production, which i thought was great on this album (i know its called a "mixtape" but lets be real, its an album). in fact, the song people really grasp from it is Amnesia, which i always felt was a bit differnt from the flow of rest of the album, sorta just placed in there.

I think his '80s (and really most of his solo career) legacy is more the movie soundtrack themes ("Danger Zone", "Footloose", the Caddyshack song, etc) than anything else...

But that initial '77-85 run is great to me. Lots of deep cuts, some hilarity, and I think that because I really got into these records when I came of age, that I'm so sentimentally attached to them.

logged on to OKP. It really wasn't what the Hiero heads wanted at the time, but the album was still very dope because it still had a strong Bay Area aroma. He really should have been "Lee Majors" out the gate instead of "Snupe". Also as dope as Hiero was he might have benefited from a different crew affiliation.

He doesn't solo much on it which means that it will probably never be as lauded as many of his other albums but in terms of just the music it's extremely powerful.

My favourite Fleetwood Mac album is "They play on" from '69 and that's another record not many people care for; the slick pop/rock-FM is not my thing...

maybe that is why even fans of coltrane don't mention it alot. well that and the opener.

It contains some blues-rock (including a lenthy jam that *might* bore you to tears; I dig it a lot though) but also mellow acoustic songs, hard-rock and strange instrumentals in the vein of "Albatross". It's a bit of a mess but it's a really cool record even if it would have been better if they included their non-album singles from the same era.

For some reason, it became EXTREMELY hip in Gothenburg indie-circles in the earlier part of the last decade which is quite funny since I've always (=since I was a kid) found that record for practically nothing in second-hand stores. All of a sudden, it became expensive and even rare here in stores. Maybe there was some Pitchfork writeup or something? I can admit that I never even heard it based on my dislike of "Rumors" and "Fleetwood Mac" (the album) as well as the shitty songs from "Tango in the night" that were hits when I was young. Maybe I should check it out...

BTW, the same thing happened with ELO's double "Out of the blue" around the same time (and no, I've never heard that album either even if I have heard the hits of course)...

That's weird that it's so hard to find. Along w/ Bare Trees, it's easily the Fleetwood Mac album I come across the most when I'm digging. Generally it's about $6 or so, even in great condition. Maybe I should buy every copy I find from now on and list them on http://www.eim.ebay.se/

You might not like it. It's in the same vein as Rumours and the self-titled album that preceded that, with the exception of the Buckingham songs. Buckingham went with lo-fi songs he made "at home" by himself. I'm not sure if he actually made them at home, but that's the way they sound and what journalists always say. They sound sort of punk/post-punk, except for the track Tusk which features a marching band.

That's a shocker.

Doesn't really have a big hit, but outside of Angel, and Think About Me, the songs on this album are pretty strong.

There cover of Farmer's Daughter was dope too. Good to hear the three vocalists harmonizing throughout the track.

Everybody seems to focus on the fact it was their attempt at Sgt. Pepper's, which it is. But it's still has the Rolling Stones sound to it. I mean if this was on any other album it'd be considered a classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-VroHdISZM . The only time I've seen it get any sort of sign of approval or appreciation was when Wes Anderson used "2000 Man" at the end of Bottle Rocket. Otherwise it's looked at as a failed experiment that could have ruined their career.

I don't think I've ever listened to the entire thing though.

though I hear what zuma's saying in terms of the sound of 'Citadel', think it's the rawness of the riff it centers around, it could have fit on Beggar's or Exile (not enough of a fully-realized/dynamic song to have made the cut on Let It Bleed or Sticky).

Apparently Henry Rollins ruined Black Flag and "Damaged" was good (The only good thing he did to most) but old Black Flag was 1000 x better. Personally not a huge fan of the stuff before "Damaged" but love "Damaged" and most of the albums after. There were a few failed experiments but "Loose Nut" & "Slip It In" are both top-notch albums imo. Always found it weird that ppl hate on their change of sound/style but love the bands that were heavily influenced by it and recognize the influence.

Don't care too much for "Loose Nut" though even if it's not bad. "My War" is probably the best of the latter albums.

Of course, the "Live in 1984" record has most of the songs from both "My War" and "Slip it in" in better versions so the two albums are a bit redundant to me. Additionally, there is the 82 demos bootlegs which also sound better than the albums IMO...

The problem with later Black Flag albums has less to do with the music and more to do with the sound/production; it's sterile and tame *and* lo-fi at the same time; not a good combo... "Damaged" and the earlier stuff sounds so raw and crushing by comparison...

I like "My War" but it comes off as a transition album. Like they're searching for a new style, sorta got it ("My War" is probably one of my top 5 fav BF songs) but it's not fully there ("Scream" comes off as a more forced and theatrical version of "Damaged I").

I'm all about "Who's Got The 10 1/2?", that's probably one of my favorite live albums of all-time. They make every song as intense as possible, especially the stuff off of "Loose Nut".

The production is a bit weird since it's low-budget "polished" lol. So it can sound nice and clean but recorded in a tin can. But I'd say that while some get ruined or brought down by this a lot of them are neutral ("Drinking & Driving") or over come it ("My Ghetto").

probably my favorite new school hiphop album in the last year or so

the rumor is that it isn't actually made by scientist nor tubby, but by two belgian dub enthusiasts who made it with haxed vsts and shit and managed to convince a shoddy label that it was lost tapes from tubby.

I need some serious confirmation on the validity of the rumor though.

I take my dub pretty seriously.
