do you really, really want that?

and anyway, the current quasi-House/Euro-Pop trend isn't as connected to the gays and the blacks and the Latinos as Disco was at the time. so Whitey isn't as angry about the trend as they were at Disco.

and yeah, this current trend isn't as big as Disco was. largely b/c there's so much more entertainment now and it's so much easier for ppl to avoid/ignore the trend while still getting their fill of entertainment. Disco was more difficult to avoid b/c there was less entertainment back then. there were fewer points of access. fewer radio stations, fewer TV channels, fewer magazines, no video channels, etc.

fuck you.

realized the post might've came as offensive or elitist
nothing wrong the oontz just like there was nothing wrong with disco
the problem that i have with the oontz and the same thing i had with disco
is the watered down , stepped on version that's passing for pop, r&b AND hip hop these days

i was listening to sister sledge's we are family record and read the liner notes where they were blasting the song we are family at the disco sucks rally
while that song has been played ad nauseum, that is still a great record.
the folks who staged the disco sucks to me were for various reasons assholes but they had a cause
they wanted their rock and roll back
and i want my soul back

because there's layers upon layers of reasons why soul music (as it was once known) is on the verge of being extinct
just trying to bring home the point of folks standing up for something

as fucked up and ridiculous that shit was, folks attended and supported that mess
how many concerts have you been to when mc such and such goes on a rant about the state of music and it turns into tabernacle?
yet and still mc such and such turns around and makes a record with dr luke?
and how many posts on message boards and convos have us music elitists had about the state of popular music?
but that's as far as it goes....just talk

meanwhile.........

If your talking about stuff like this than I agree oontz sucks....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DokpdyXNME

But I love eruo music...when it comes to electronic they have a better taste.....they also have a worse taste...

let me explain...

The stuff that is just awesome that we as a mainstream don't get....all our awesome underground stuff.....that is what is mainstream over there or at least more so than here.

They on the other hand ( europe) also have horrible taste and like the very worst of the worst music out there...

So you also need to weed through the bad ones in order to find the gems but if you want here are the places to look.

France , Sweden , England ( all of GB really ) , Germany sneeks in a few every noe and then,

Avoid Russian techno.....it's the worst....yes I realize they are in both Europe and Russia.

it was about...other things too.

if you want to get 'soul' fans riled up, you're gonna have to pin the blame for its destruction on some demographic they are likely to rally against.

try Latinos. they just supplanted blacks as the #1 minority (w/a burrito!) in the 2010 US Census. i suspect most of the ppl you'll be able to rile in support of your thing will be black. they're likely to feel some kinda way about losing 'soul' and being pushed back to the back of the bus by the Latinos. especially if you can get 'em drunk, like those White Sox fans at the Disco Sucks rally.

good luck.

fuck you.

maybe I've just grown tired of the whole "fighting about taste" thing.

But seroiusly, the Ooontz is NO threat to me as a producer, a DJ, OR as a fan of Dance music. Why? Because like 'KAP said: it's easy to avoid.

I don't *HAVE* to hear it, nor do I go to places where it's played. And to be fair, those folks are just doing their thing. As long as it doesn't bleed over into MY thing, I'm cool.

but if you dig a bit deeper, Oontz might be of some assistance to the underground. How? Think about it:

Without Hammer making headway into the Pop Music realm, do you think the MC's who followed him would be selling millions of records? Everybody bitched about it, but that was the catalyst in making Hip-Hop available to suburia. Meaning, terrible pop flavored music makes an entire genre of music a bit more visible to the mainstream. Thus, underground artists who might've labored in obscurity, MIGHT wind up in the right place at the right time.

so for every Tiesto, there might be an Anthony Nicholson who gets a call...

("good" by my definition. I don't hate oontz and just avoid it nowadays for the most part like you said).

If they hate oontz, I don't have to worry about them showing up to the deep soulful house night, "cuz it's all the same, just oontz oontz oontz".

yep you're right bro, don't come, you'd hate it!

side note, oontz reeks of an "outsiders" label for dance music. the more initiated are able to call stuff by more specific terms. I'll probably refrain from using it after this, actually. it's a handy context clue for who i'm dealing with musically though.

like if I hear somebody use a blanket term like "techno" for ALL four-on-the-floor Dance music, I know they have NO clue what they're talking about, so it's pointless to try to explain Deep House from Broken Beat from Techno, etc.

don't play it or listen to at the bar or club.

instead of writing this post, you could have just turned it off when you heard it on Pandora or whereever.

classify your oontz oontz issues:

is it that trashy, house/euro pop shit of today?

hard house of the late 90s to early 2000s?

what is it?

because if you're talking about soulful house (Todd Terry, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, MAW (Masters At Work for the slow nigglets who post here), etc.), then you need to get a hardcore knuckle backhand to the side of the dome for your silliness....

if it's techno, well, um, some of that is good...the rest, get rid of it.

Well two things happened. Disco was straight until The Man came knocking and tried to make money off of it. Once THAT happened, the shit got REAL wack REAL fast, and everybody and their mother was making REALLY bad Disco records. And of course the Rock Crowd felt threatened, because some of their favorite Rock bands were making these terrible Disco records. ( We've discussed it before, but traditional Rock acts like The Rolling Stones, Kiss, The Clash, Supertramp, etc) all made at least one Disco record. So rather than say "I Was Made For Loving You" sucks, they just took up in arms and said "Disco Sucks". Never mind that Kiss CHOSE to make that awful ass record. Nobody blames THEM. They blame Disco.

The second thing was that since Disco ( in it's infancy ) was a predominantly Gay/Latino/Black/Urban subculture, a lot of the establishment didn't like the notion of it filtering over into 'regular' society. So rather than ignore it ( like you said) they took their paranoia to the stage and basically shit on an entire movement.

It's kinda eerie, but you can see the same thing happen with Hip-Hop if you look close enough.

It was pretty shameless. It's the threat of doing whatever it takes to sound "contemporary" even at the cost of your own sonic integrity.

Happens to the best of 'em.

I think it's already happened. From around 1997-2004 or so, with it peaking in 1998-99, there was a whole lot of rap and R&B on the pop charts. And then I think ever so slowly, the "filtering" started to happen.

And now we have our current lot.

I remember an old post, this HAD to be from like 99 or so, where the subject came up that Hip-Hop was poised for a mainstream "order 66" if you will. As in The Man was gonna somehow take it over and all the good shit would be swept away. Everybody thought it was SOOOOOO riduculous...

But yeah. Remember when Mainstream America made fun of Hip-Hop and always had some type of silly ass caricature of everybody spinning on their heads and writing terrible grafitti on alley walls as a backdrop? It was all a big fat joke until they started seeing the sales numbers. THEN all of a sudden it was "wait...they sell HOW many records?" So that's when you get shit like Jesse Jaymes and Gerardo, and the video games like PaRappa the Rapper...

the rolling stones' 'some girls' is one of their best albums and was well-received critically and commercially.

people LOVED 'i was made for loving you'. those people still do.

>the rolling stones' 'some girls' is one of their best albums
>and was well-received critically and commercially.

it was received w/hard feelings among hardcore Stones fans and Rockists at the time. those feelings have mellowed a bit since then. but if we wanna understand the 'DISCO SUCKS' stuff, we gotta go back in time.

>people LOVED 'i was made for loving you'. those people still
>do.

yes. and many ppl HATED the song. regardless of how they feel now, they hated it then. some of those ppl were in the 'DISCO SUCKS' crowd.

>the clash wasn't a rock band like that. people who dug the
>clash weren't hating on disco, were they?

the ppl who dug the Clash hated on everything. LOL. j/k. yeah, a good # of them hated on Disco.

again, let's not rewrite history. it's important to remember that regardless of how Disco is seen now, there was a serious anti-Disco sentiment in the air by the late 70s. we've explained it throughout the post.

fuck you.

Granted, the main issues have been covered:

1) I don't want a "Disco Sucks" rally for real R&B and soul music, since the roots of it were some BS

2) Too many flavors of "Oontz" are out there, and to throw them all under the bus would be problematic.

Thinking about it, what I WOULD want is for Big Communications to be broken up. The '96 Telecommunications legislation is the real culprit for our current lot. Consumers did get a chance to strike back at it w/the increasing home presence ot the Internet and filesharing. Now it's a total mess. As mentioned above, the music business has been balkanized, and I can't help but think it's because of chart trends at the tail end of the 1990s + the rise of the Internet in response to The Big Telecommunications Funnel in America.

What the fuck happened???

And the post wasn't a diss at "real" dance music...not at all.
