Bruce Springsteen
Kenny Rogers
The Cosby Show
OFWGKTA
The Roots as recording artists

everything seems to go right over their heads.

And then you got Rocsi calling the worm "the snake"...

At least they knew the Soul Train line and Ben & Jerry's, I guess.

Being young is no excuse for not knowing what the Cosby Show is... or Kenny Rogers for that matter. And if you aren't Maino, 106 & Park fans don't want to know who you are. Just like TRL of old, it's driven by dumb dumb dumb dumb people.

know a country song from 1978? I highly doubt you (if you're being honest) can say that you would know a song from a genre of music your parents didn't listen to that was popular 30 plus years ago. I was born in the 70's and there's no way that I would get a Bing Crosby reference or some other musical reference from the 40's at that age unless it was music that my parents or grandparents played and something tells me those kids parents weren't bumping the gambler.

It's referenced all over the place, all the time... on TV shows and everything. Wyclef remade it... didn't Coolio do so too? (of course, that's all ancient history for them too)

Mt parents didn't play Bing Crosby records when I was a kid, but I got Bing Crosby references even when I didn't really know who he was because they permeated the entire culture. I knew a lot of 1940s references without fully understanding them because of WB cartoons... and TV was still running reruns of old shows from the 1950s at that time.

Ancient wack ass history to those kids. It's really a great thing if they don't remember those travesties.

You made a key point though. You knew some of them without fully understanding what they meant. We're all assuming that no one in that audience knew anything about the reference when it's quite possible that if someone played the full song for them they might hear it and say oh yeah I've heard this but they just don't know it off the top of the head.
I just think we aren't being honest with how self centered and time specific all teenagers are (including ourselves at that age) and we want to act like we were so much more knowledgable when we were that age. I laugh now thinking how me and all of my friends referred to Grandmaster flash as old school compared to Run DMC and now in retrospect they were barely a couple of years apart from when we heard each of them.

It's crazy he's taking about Odd Future debuting on the show. And is like I don't know if you've heard of them. This scenario is filled with so many interesting bits. Wow. It's real deep. The Cosby show. Quest Love and Jimmy Fallon on 1-6 and Park promoting sneakers and what have you...

primarily b/c Fallon and Quest seem like such genuine guys and it really comes through here. They love what they do and want everyone else to love it as much.

But also b/c it seems to me that Fallon views The Roots as pretty much full partners in the show as opposed to just musical support.

i'm sorry in my generation, it was not cool to be completely ignorant of your parents' music and era. in fact i was dependent on my parent's lens on the world until i was about 9 so even when i moved on to discover my own shit, it stayed with me.

i think the internet and social media has actually done the reverse of what we expected for some of these kids. instead of using it to open up new worlds, they use it to close themselves in on one or two things. they pick a handful of things and OD on it on facebook, youtuble, tumbler on twitter.

sorry for the rant. teenagers are idiot droids. *angry old man drops mics and walks off*

This was a perfectly nice and wholesome moment
all around, and the BET crowd played as much a
part in it as ? and Fallon did.

Jesus Christ, lighten the fuck up, seriously.

As to them not knowing the Cosby Show -- you guys
are fucking OLD, get over it. You are old. These
kids are young. Even if they know what the fucking
Cosby show was, they don't know it well enough to
remember specifics of individual episodes.

As to the Odd Future business -- 106 & Park isn't
really that crowd's handle, at least not yet. Stop
criticizing and crying. OF is mostly the love child
of the Fader crowd, which is substantial (and non-trivial)
but not everyone.

Like serious -- calm the fuck down.

Stop being a bunch of nitpicky sissies.

...age range than the actual people who are apart of the show's studio audience, it's like being on Soul Train back in the day, you had to look the part rather than just know how to dance, it probably is quite a few people who wanted & tried to be apart of 106 & Park's studio audience that is well over 25 to 40 years of age but didn't fit the demographics the show wants to portray.

So with that being said don't think for a moment that it's not an older or Fader hipster crowd that got all those references that also watch that show on the regular (I should know, I got a few friends that's older than me that watch it all the time and I don't get how that can enjoy it but they do).
