"The "What The Hell was *I* listening to?!?!?" Post..."

So I put on the ol' MP3 Player yesterday, and did a blind shuffle.

( ironically enough, it seems to me that even though I have a ton of shit on there, I usually listen to the same shit. But that's another post...)

anyway, a song from Tricky's "Pre-Millenium Tension" came up. So I stopped it, went "oh shit!!! I used to run this shit all the time!!!", and then ran the whole album from Start to Finish.

What the FUCK was I listening to all those years ago?!?!?!

Dude, this album was NOTHING but White Noise and effects. I guess when you're not 22 and drunk or hanging out with your friends in a smoke filled room trying to be cool, it doesn't sound as good. And a couple years back, I watched a documentary on Tricky where he admitted to just getting high and pretty much throwing shit together and hitting "record". Now I can see it...

Now I stand by my endorsement of "Maxinquaye". But THIS shit? HELL naw...

so the purpose of this post is to rap a taste about albums that seemed pretty dope when they were out, but don't sound to hot with your grown-up ears....that is those of you who HAVE Grown up ears.

Let's go (C) Batman

the JV unit is cool. if you're into hip hop music,on a side note for laughs and giggles push the volume knob to enable the demo mode while having the category/bank knob set to Orch/Brass and browse to patch number 93 and you'll hear the stock sample Swizz Beat used for his entire melody for the song "Down Bottom" performed by Drag-on and Juvenile from the Ruff Ryders vol 1 album.( he should be ashamed, probably one of his best beats too so I guess the Casio ripping rumors are true lol)

It is still jamming. It sounded like an out of work early R. Kelly song by the time it dropped, but we jammed that song at LSU even though we had jokes for the dance and all of that. It is appalling that I couldn't Amazon this song just now. To Youtube I go.

like with Nu-Jazz, it was a blending of some elements of Jazz with different styles of Electronic Dance music. These days Nu-Jazz is pretty much synonymous with Broken Beat ( as most of the other hybrids have faded away over time...)

But I see no real difference from "Regular" Metal to Nu-Metal, other than the 'newness' of the bands. Stylistically speaking, is there *really* a difference? Or is the 'Society for the Invention of Creative Genre Names' just having too much fun?

30. "Dude, Nu-metal is *not* regular metal..."
In response to Reply # 17

IMO, it's not metal at all but rather a hybrid genre that borrows elements from not just Hip-hop but also stuff like Heavy alternative/grunge, emo and shitty radio-rock like Nickelback and Creed and mix it with stuff that in a shallow sense qualifies as metal (=screaming, distorted guitars etc.).

The metal-roots of nu-metal RARELY go further back tah early 90's groove-style riffs (think Pantera). It's worth pointing out that a lot of punk/hardcore approved bands like DEP, Botch, Converge etc. in the past 15 years also use that type of riffs and IMO sound FAR more "true" metal in spirit than the majority of Nu-metal bands, yet they fall under the hardcore umbrella.

IMO, nu-metal has *spiritually* more in common with punk/hardcore than metal; it emphasizes stuff like angst and rebellion while de-emphasizing stuff like riffs, solos etc.

The reason nu-metal gets referred to as "metal" is most likely that metal to this day is viewed as this corporate thing whereas punk is viewed as underground counter-culture which is hilarious since "true" metal hasn't mattered commercially for almost 20 years whereas Green Day, Offspring, MCR, Blink 182 asnd numerous bands playing punk has blown up...

That being said, a band like Slipknot-as lame as they are-do sound pretty metal.

As for Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones etc.-FOH!

Anyway, take it from a dude who grew up on metal, nu-metal is as far from regular metal as you can get while still playing distorted guitars and utilizing aggressive dynamics...

Mid-to-late '90s, they were on some "We listen to Offspring! Doc Martens and flannel!" while I stayed on my true school hip hop. They would try to crash on me for that, I just turned my tape player up.
Cut to 2011, dude I knew from middle school and high school runs into me.
"Hey man, you know who I've been getting into? This rapper named O.C. You should check him out."
First thought that crossed my mind? Slap him pimp-style.

I bumped this shit freshman year of college like it was fucking Public Enemy or something. A few years ago, when I started tracking down all the albums I bought on cassette and hadn't replace on CD yet through, ahem, digital means, I download the album again and threw it on the iPod. Then I went out and bumped it and... YUUUUCCCCCKKKKK. Ye gods, that shit was awful, awful, awful. Corny beats, corny lyrics, awful concepts. The only thing that didn't make me wretch was the single, "Nad Flavaz."

they hyped the shit out of the concept...and I did like Dalls Austin's production....

but instead of some organic R&B/funk hybrid, it was just standard New Jack Swing with a great and a good singer and a mediocre ass rapper...

...with cussing

I made myself listen and I liked stuff on the record here and there, but overall...nah, man

Let alone Singing Groups with shitty names.

you know how R&B groups in the 90's had names like "The 43rd street Neckbreaker Squad" and shit like that? Notsomuch...

and if your shit had a "Z" in place of an "S" at the end?
like "Almighty Head Crushaz". It's still at Tower. ( or wherever Tower sent all that "didn't get sold" type shit...)

Can't forget A Ho of My Own, one of Babyface's most raunchest compositions!

I agree with your assessment though. Their album wasn't as subversive and edgy as it was hyped as.

...after seeing the "Let's Get Naked" video on the Box...

They had that Jodeci image, with the TLC production...How could it possibly go wrong? I used to play it constantly.

Listening to it a few year ago though, I could barely get through the first couple of songs. There was way too much going on in the production. And those cats could not sing.....And what was up with the "Psycho Cee-Lo" looking dude?

"Dirt Road White Girl" and "Try My Love" still get love though...

Wy not let Pete Rock or Primo(he was still good then) or somebody like that in there....where the fuck did Us3 come from anyway....

now that I think abt it...Blue Note might have CREATED Us3 for the purpose of making beats from their catalogue...many years later they got smart and hired Madlib

I even have the *second* Us3 record.

Not that it's been played in 15 years, but you get the point.

The records that really never worked as well for me were the instrumental ones of guys building (usually smooth-)jazz melodies over beats. I've got a solo record from Ronny Jordan that got played maybe 1.5x. But add a corny ass rapper to it and I loved it!

I just bought the BNH "Never Stop" single like a month ago for the OG video remix. (I know BNH are not really the best example of what we're talking about here but since you mentioned them..)

It's funny to see the US3 discussion now and what a litmus test it still is on the subject. When Cantaloop came out it was the peak of my interest in this jazz/hiphop combo, and even then I knew it was "off" for some reason. It didn't help that "non-hiphop fans" loved it either, which was probably a different reactionism in and of itself.

edit: oh just noticed this is a zombie thread.

Neither did Moby or MIA.

But I thought Coldplay's parachutes was great when it came out. I have no idea why.

When I was a little kid I secretly loved 'Pour some sugar on me' by Def Leppard. Had to keep that quiet. hohoho.

Another one....anyone remember that group Urban Dance Squad? I think they were Dutch....they did a Chilli Pepper type of thing. I thought they were the bee's knees.

They made some cheesy 80's rock, but I liked their hits. I never dug them enough to sit through an entire album. "Photograph" was a good tune. I'd listen to a Greatest Hits without complaining.

I worked at a radio station and got a bunch of shit for free. UDS's album was in there, and after seeing that "Deeper shade of Soul" video, I opted NOT to listen to it, lol...

i know moby doesn't have any house cred, but i'd be curious what you think of 'everything is wrong' since it has house songs; before that, he was doing ambient and rave techno, so i wouldn't think those albums and singles would interest you any more than 'everything is wrong.' i know you like alternative rock, and most people who hear it don't like it even if they like his other music, but i really liked moby's rock album, 'animal rights,' which also has a lot of instrumental music with typical electric live band instruments.

A friend made it pretty clear that we would never again be bumping ANY Tricky during a blunt session at his residence.

I still dig the first solo pretty much front to back and like a few songs ("Christiansands" and "Makes Me Wanna Die") off PMT, but that's more about Topley's vocals than anything. Love her voice.

I actually caught onto her album years later after it was released but every now & then I'll put it on, like two days ago, I was playing it and a few co-workers were like "who is this, this is nice".

It's a got a raw neo-soul sound to it but it's definitely nothing to diss, Bilal sings with her on three songs, Chico Debarge & Kadar M. even does some production on it, c'mon what's there to not like?

I guess we were both under the same trip hop spell because during that phase, I bumped the above album all the time thinking it was the shit.

Years later, I see that it was quite corny.

But the chick (Kelli Dayton/Ali) did have a sexy voice.

After Maxinquaye, Tricky's output was very hit and miss. Mostly miss. If I wanted to hear a drugged-out person rambling over noises, I'd stand outside of an abandoned buildings with the crackheads like everyone else.

i like the guy, just dont want to listen to him much. i think id like him more if people didnt go on and on about maxinquaye being so amazing. theres a lot of things i like about his songs, but im not sure they ever add up to more than that. im not sure whats really *there*. and i love martina but he could do with getting some better takes out of her.

the black steel cover is boss though. makes me wanna die is good too, and a few others, but his stuff can feel like its barely held together.

massive attacks first and second album are excellent (apart from the raps on the first one) but pretty much everything else that came from trip hop, barring a few songs, i wanted to like it, but it always felt too emaciated or deficient or just too stylised for me. entroducing is another album that everyone was raving about but i just couldnt grow to love it, even though i do still know it well. not musical wallpaper, but not that far from it. never really *liked* portishead either, apart from tracks like glory box and machine gun from the last one.

It felt like they were recontextualizing Hip-Hop ideas to some esoteric and "moody" art-school aesthetic to me and I didn't really like that. Massive Attack's first album sounds a bit more like the late 80's-early 90's Brit-soul movement to me than something that tries to appeal to goths and thus not as clumsy or dreary.

Another problem is that all the cool restaurants and clothes-stores and "pubs" etc. ran it in the ground in the latter half of the 90's; the sound became synonymous with "edgy" wallpaper-music and japanese noodle bars and designer chairs to me, I can *still* not hear it without being reminded of an aspect of the 90's I don't care for...

i tried to listen to it without thinking of it as hip hop for people that dont like hip hop (though this isnt necessarily a negative thing, rapping isnt for everyone) or hip hop for people that dont want to hear a black voice but its still just a bit bland and watery. it is definitely mood music but still on the lite side imo, like a trip hop mark ronson almost lol. portishead are meant to be this really moody and dark band, but if i wanted something dark back then, id go and listen to wu-tang or co-flow (though obviously, little johnny from the hospital - which is seriously underrated imo - wouldnt go down too well at dinner parties lol).

all that said, i think portishead - and this maybe ties into that other convo about using hip hop boom bap as an influence vs synths - i found their last album much more interesting than their older 'classic' material. though even then, theres something about how they write their songs that sound too 'level' or horizontal for me. they never get out of that 'lurching' mode.

and the mad professor remix album to what came after (i think sly might be the best thing they ever did actually). after those albums, they got more atmospheric/gothic/ambient and rocky but the soul/hip hop side seemed to decrease which made me lose interest a bit, but i should prob go back and reinvestigate...

but it was more a case of me listening to it and trying to pick apart his production methods. Remember, not too many people were doing shit like that at the time.

It was never a favorite, but I'd play it from time to time. I don't remember "not liking" it when it was new.

for some reason he doesn't get mentioned as much as he should among fans of shadow, but the '90s albums at least (i love 'zen' from 2001) are worth checking

but yeah, i just never *liked* it when it was new either. i dont know why, i just never saw what everyone else seemed to, and i tried to get into it a lot!

*shrug*

weirdly, i think i like the second shadow album more lol

don't get me wrong, I *still* like a good bit of it...but some of it is the hip-hop lyrical equivalent of free jazz.

And then some of the beats are just wack, lol
