I didn't even buy his last couple because what I heard of them and word here & elsewhere was not very good. But I did really like "Blue Carpet." I know and like that Kanye song from the GOOD Fridays thing, but I don't think Snoop adds anything to it unfortunately - that's the only thing I've heard off this album so far.

I remember like 6 months back, Swizz was all over the Internet talking about how Snoop was making a sequel to Doggystyle and he was gonna produce it. Then Snoop scrapped the sequel plan, and I guess, with it when Swizzy.

I don't hear that dude's production enough & he didn't dissapoint, this shit is smooth as hell the way they freaked Boz Scaggs 'Lowdown'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRBSJ1FZAQE

edit: I forgot to mention adding that little sample that Three Times Dope used for 'Funky Dividends' at the end.

This song is officially a winner.

I might actually have to buy this album just off hearing this & 'Gang Bang Rookie'.

It's too long/bloated.

I know that's a cliched response for hip hop these days, but his shit is always 3 or 4 tracks too lengthy.

The very good to great songs ("Gang Bang Rookie", "I Don't Need No Bitch", "Sumethin Like This Night") are outstanding, but he needs someone to trim the fat.

And that Willie Nelson collaboration may have seen like a cool idea on paper, the two posterboys for smoking weed on a song together, but boy does it suck.

I thought some of Snoop's albums within the last ten years could have been near classics if he would have cut 5-6 songs.

I know he makes a shitload of music but he needs to cut himself off at 14-15 tracks no exceptions.

I'd say Dre, but then we all know that just means the shit will never come out because it'll never be good enough to release.

And I don't know if Snoop would entrust anyone else or that role because, quite frankly, in terms of status and accomplishments in the game, who trumps him, producer or artist?

His songs go in a bunch of different directions, which is why I hated Malice In Wonderland so much. True you are bound to dislike about 5 tracks, but you'll like 15!

I agree about the Willie Nelson songs tho, that should've been a leak instead of an album cut.

Man...I'm early on, but the first thing that jumps out...these tracks go hard. Mixing "Oh Honey" with "Dirty Lowdown"? Hell yeah.

All Snoop has to show up and not ruin most of these songs. And his writers have been on the ball lately. Sad times, but hey...

And yeah...like everyone says, there's gonna be 5 stinkers because the albums are wild long. Its crazy to think that he has 100 or so songs or more per album session. I shudder to think what type of jams exist from the R&G and Blue Carpet sessions that we'll never hear.

Oh...Jeezy IS alive. Where in the blue hell is TM103? I like Ross more than a lot, but damn...the CO couldn't be indirectly messing up Jeezy's stroke at DJ that bad, right? Trap or Die 2 got dope album-level spins from me.

I realize what you're saying, but I hate this sentiment about Snoop. Yea he's not as great as he once was, but he's still dynamic on a beat when he does it right...which I think is more often than not. His voice still carries on a track better than a lot of people's. And his flow is impeccable.

That said, his albums are usually too long haha.

Yep. I'd say and hold onto the argument that Snoop is a better emcee now than he was in his heyday. He had a couple of dark periods where he was izzling and shizzling his way through waaaaay too many verses, but now he goes off at least one good time every album for the last 5 or so releases. I still go max volume on Promise I from R&G every time it pops up on my iPod. Really, R&G fully renewed my faith and appreciation for Snoop. The Tunes just did a good job with him and so many of those songs just worked. I thought Blue Carpet had a slew of good songs too, but I swear between that, the Bsides CD that came out right after and the 100 or so songs that we never heard, a better album was hanging out somewhere.

Ego Trippin kinda pissed me off because I thought that he'd go off and 80s his way through the whole thing with stuff like the mellow stuff from the 213 sessions and the Prince/Stevie stuff that Terrace Martin and them have been making (and I love all of it). Then I get the album and he's rapping over Jeezy tracks for a few songs for no good reason at all.

It sucks that he probably doesn't have any silky freestyles left in him like The Shiznit, which was dope in a lot of ways but seeing it written down is less than mindblowing. Still, it would be cool as hell if he did that nowadays every now and again. Add that he clearly has writers and has for years and folks are gonna be skeptical.

The thing with me is the fact that we know for sure that he's recording a gang of songs for every album and still managing to have 5 almost flat out bad songs on every release only to have at least that many bangin songs leak and/or get dropped months later. Its like West Coast Nas.

I agree with the idea that he needs a good exec producer to get stuff even more right for him. And hell naw it shouldn't be no-album releasing ass Dr. Dre.

Its great to think that Snoop, Ghost, and Rae are still releasing music that makes me appreciate their existence. And Snoop has the nerve to have at least one hit or three every couple years. Doggumentary has like 4 or 5 depending on what gets released. Hell, he has 3 songs from this album playing on ESPN right now.

Yea I can see what you're saying about him being a better MC now. He was always dynamic because of his voice, flow and personality on the mic, but you're right in that he didn't do anything mindblowing lyrically even on Doggystyle, he just made simple rhymes sound sooooooooooooooo ill. And yea Snoop knows what he's doing. Even this new album, as excellent as I think it is, could still use 5 or 6 songs less, and it would be an almost flawless release. It's almost a chore to get through the whole thing despite the fact that most of it is really good, if that makes sense.

Yea I was disappointed in Ego Trippin too. Blue Carpet was so fucking good (IMO his second best to Doggystyle) and like you said, the collaborations he had around the time ET dropped let me to believe he was going in a different direction. There was a few great tracks on there (Press Play immediately comes to mind) but I don't listen to more than 5 tracks on there often.

Yea you're right about Snoop and Nas too. And I feel similarly about Snoop still dropping quality work this far into his career, especially since it's clear he has other ways of making money and doesn't really need to put out albums anymore. It's clear he still loves it and that's why we get an album like Doggumentary.

I was thinking about how I'd rate his albums after I got Doggumentary yesterday. I think it looks something like this:

1. Doggystyle
2. Blue Carpet Treatment
3. Tha Last Meal
4. No Limit Top Dogg
5. R&G
6. Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss
7. Tha Doggfather
8. Ego Trippin'
9. Malice n Wonderland
1000000000000000000000000. Da Game is to Be Sold

Obviously being only two listens or so into Doggumentary I'm not ready to rank it, but judging by first impressions I think it'll fall firmly into third place on that list. I'm really digging this album a lot.

In response to Reply # 60

>One of the worst albums ever made in the history of mankind.

Haha! 'History of mankind'!? Damn...I'd love to argue that but...

Snoop went from being smooth, mellow, dope, and great on everything up through Murder was the Case Soundtrack to being a mumbling and whispering dude who flat out sounded scared to rap for a bulk of two albums. My thing is...it started on Doggfather when the whole world was waiting for the follow-up to Doggystyle.

Doggfather hit my whole crew really tough..in a bad way. In short, we hated that album because we expected waaaay too much and got killed on it because it wasn't that good. No Dre, No Pac (he was alive!), hardly any DPG..Snoop's mumbling and whispering..damnit Calvin. Years later, there's a small handful of jamming songs that kinda sorta redeem it. Wake Up, Groupie, You Thought...pretty jamming. But the damn whispering and mumbling was unbearable on that album for me!

Game to be sold..honestly, I liked that one a little more than Doggfather. That written, it was still bad..especially looking back now. I remember Don't Let Go and Game of Life being good to me. Still a G Thang gave me faith that his career wasn't completely over. I can't think of anything else because Down 4 my niggas was on something else...

The way I saw it, Top Dogg had NO business having as many jams as it did considering he was still fully on No Limit. Suga Free made my year on Trust Me (Pimpin ain't easy but ho'n ain't hard nooooo...lady you 'gon haveta hooo or lady I'ma haveta gooo! See ya! Sugafreeee!). Bitch Please is of course an anthem (RIP Nate). I loved Just Dippin, Doin Too Much (Quik!), and Don't Tell with the whole crew there ready to be as offensive as ever on a mellow jam was my jam too. It was like a new Ain't No Fun..complete with a Nate verse that is hilariously offensive to this day. 'Next time you can't cuuuuuum if you got a loud touuuuuuuuunge! I know I gotta big diiiiiiick! Shouldn't loan it to a triiiiiiick' Bwahaha!

Last Meal was flat out jamming to me. Lay Low, Wrong Idea, True Lies, that song with Suga Free. It was like Kokane became his new Nate Dogg for a whole album and the result was just West Coast rider music all the way through. Wasn't Timbo's Snoop Dogg on there too!? Opening iTunes now..typing in snoop into my library. Oh yeah...Brake Fluid!? Bitch pump yo brakes!...hoooo! Hell yeah, that CD jammed.

R&G..I swear by my five favorite songs on that record as easily amongst the best of Snoop's catalog. The intro, Drop it like its hot (the first time I heard that song was the first time I was in Vegas...I KNEW it was on), UPS AND DOWNS (in the biggest font I can type with..my goodness that damn song is just the best), and Promise I.

Side note: I swear by a lot of that 213 record too. The bootleg was better than the release. Anyway, Nate's greatness as a hook/bridge/chant cat who had no qualms about coming out with something outlandish kinda carried Snoop and Warren on that one, but its not like they made it too tough for him. I'm Fly, Sassy Ways, Run on Up, Groupie Luv, etc...

Ego Trippin...we all apparently need a support group for that album. Neva Have 2 Worry, SD is out, Sexual Eruption, and a couple of other songs get my vote as the goods. Snoop/Quik/Teddy on the production!? How could that go wrong!? Oh...they could only produce a few of the songs on the album and the rest of the album can basically suck. Damnit Calvin! Tricked me again!

Overall, color me pleasantly surprised with Snoop's catalog as a whole. There's a barrage of jamming ass songs throughout his existence, and this new disc adds several more to the collection. I saw him live in Houston a few years ago. It was a good show even if the playlist was 'safer' than I would've liked AND he showed up crazy late (12:30 AM when he was listed to go on at like 10 PM). Still, Kurupt, Daz, and Soopafly were on the scene, and Snoop sounded great too. I was scared that a weed cat like him might sound far more sluggish, but Snoop was at least at a JayZ level of show professionalism, clarity, etc. And he jumped around happily like a dude who was happy to be presenting his material to a crowd of folks who were still receptive.

I stand by that statement. Snoop was out of his element. He didn't belong on those BBTP beats at all, and 98% of the music was forced and corny. It's like...BBTP tried to take their bass heavy southern shit and make it sound "west coast", and Snoop tried to take his lazy west coast drawl and make it sound "southern" and what resulted was an absolute shitshow mess of an album that should have never ever seen the light of day.

Add to that the pen and pixel album cover and I puked while buying it. Album sucks.

I mean yea at the time you probly liked it better than Doggfather but think about it, do you ever listen to any one song off that album ever? If you can name one joint that you still throw on to this day on some "that's my shit!" I'll be impressed/disappointed (you know what I'm saying). I have Snoop's ENTIRE catalogue (including 213, Eastsidaz albums, Murder Was the Case, even the internet only CD for Smokefest World Tour released while he was a free agent), besides Da Game...because I snapped that shit in half a year or so after buying it. Just a miserable blemish on an otherwise pretty damn good career like you and I both outlined. Utterly unlistenable album. And by the way it sounds as if we agree about this so I'm not arguing so much as I'm just reiterating how bad it was.

By the way...you forgot Press Play from Ego Trippin! Best song on that whole shit. But yes that album was otherwise fully disappointing.

Not so to "Da Game." I mean "Doggfather" was so disappointing to so many when it first came out (and in the few years following, when everybody decided en masse that it was terrible), it can't help but rise in estimation once you get a little distance from it. It's actually not terrible, it just suffers from coming after such a classic. Both the production and Snoop sound like pale imitations of the previous album. But it's not actively terrible like "Game."

It suffers the same fate as It Was Written, though Doggfather isn't on the level of IWW so don't get me wrong. But there's no way it could've lived up to Doggystyle no matter what it was.

But yes, years later there's plenty of jams on that album and I actually really like a lot of it.

He just doesn't write all of them anymore. I think he first mentioned having ghostwriters for certain songs around the time Ego Trippin came out.

before reading this. Check it out. I think it's second only to Blue Carpet amongst his R&G and after releases. Honestly I think it's his third best album just based on first impression. He really went in on this one and the beats are impeccable.

I've heard like 5-6, which is already too many...but hearing Youtube tracks and downloading it just doesn't give me the same reaction as buying it and playing it straight thru from start to finish. So yeah, I'm gonna take it back to 99 n do that shit on Tuesday...I'll do the same with Quik if I can.

This record makes it easy to see why. Jake One laying down some authentic jr. P-funk wit Bootsy to make it official? Mr. Porter on the hook channeling the spirit of Curtis Mayfield? Khalifa leaving that sing songy s**t at the door and entering the booth with a purpose?! KOKANE?! Snoop with a vison/message that he keeps up through the majority of the album. Geting my support on release day, no question.

I agree, 5 or so tracks removed, and this would be an album that gets spun from top to bottom every time. But I'm not complaining by any means. There is alot of knowledge in this thread. I was lovin R&G and Blue Carpet when they dropped. I was let down by ego trippin. It only got worse with malice. But doggumentary wipes the slate clean. Add to that that Dam-Funk said that he's been sliding Snoop a couple tracks, and I'm hopeful for Snoops next record before this one even drops.

But hold up....Snoop has writers? I got some audio homework to do....

Book of David can't be slackin after this.......

1. That there were two instances of tracks that were essentially the exact same song. It was Platinum and Boom, then We Rest in Cali and El Lay (and ironically all of these songs are back to back to back to back). So basically Snoop decided to have two club songs featuring r&b singers (if you can call T-Pain that, I know) back to back, followed by two songs about California back to back. In neither case did one bring more to the table than the other. I just didn't think it was necessary to include the same song twice...twice.

If I had to chooce, I'm taking Boom (though I heavily prefer Kels to T-Pain anyday, I think Boom was the more enjoyable song overall) and We Rest in Cali (loved that beat).

2. My Fuc'n House. That song sucks. Ass. Miserable fucking song.

Other than that, I can't complain about this album at all. Snoop did his thing for sure, and the beats are excellent.

I agree, out of what I've heard so far that shit is the only serious mood-breaker and the one instance where I think an exec producer with a good ear would have said, "Hey Snoop? This is garbage and it's interfering with the flow of things. Dump it."

You said it...it completely interrupts the flow of the album. The rest of it has a certain sound, very west coast for the most part. This track just screams...I don't know. It screams "I shouldn't have made this album".

just pointing out that Daz & Soopafly are more inclined to provide that vintage Snoop sound than Dre.

this new album has no menace in it's sound. happy, bubbly Bootsy appearances and Scott Storch sampling that wack song.

shit sounds corny. a few decent to good tracks and tons of forgettable shit.

I hear you, and it's all opinion.

I just don't personally think Snoop has to be menacing for me to like him. If anything, his persona of the last 4 albums or so has been fun and refreshing and I welcome it. He's a 40+ year old family man; similar to Dre, the last thing I care to hear him rapping about is popping guns and gangbanging.

Is this an all time great album? No, I just think it's a step up from his last 2.

I mean, nothing will ever compare to that mid to late 90s west coast g-funk Nate Dogg laced stuff. But IMO, if Snoop were to try it would come across as forced and contrived, and would sound corny as shit.

Is the new stuff as good? No...but what could ever be as good as that stuff? Again, trying to recreate it would be disingenuous, and come out sounding too forced. I'd rather him go in another direction even if it's not as dynamic. And again, he's 40+ years old, he's not gonna be making 20-something music in his 40s, and if he did, that would suck.

But yes, Who Got Some Gangsta Shit? and shit like that is unbeatable. But asking someone to recreate that type of stuff is kind of ridiculous.

There are some songs on here that rival some his greatest cuts. Everything he did with Jake and Battlecat is flames. I'm not a big Wiz Khalifa fan. But that shit is dope to me. It was one of the collabs that you see on paper and think it's going so premeditated that it's weak. But that shit go.

I was gonna say - Doggystyle can't be beaten for that top spot whether you clean up the filler on this album or not.

And no I wasn't including compilations...I was literally just worried that you actually thought any Snoop album at this point could ever be better than Doggystyle.

I mean to me, Snoop really doesn't have a single WAAAAAACK album...even the worst ones still had enough good songs to be average-decent albums, like the first NL one.

But this is obviously NOWHERE near Doggystyle...and Top Dogg + Last Meal are def better than this. BCT is still better as well. This might rival Paid the cost, and it's better than Ego Trippin and Malice. I MIGHT say it's better than Doggfather, but even that had some HITS...I played OJ Wake up on a radio show Thursday LOL.

But the usual Discography you'd see on Wiki. Doggystyle, Doggfather, Game to be sold, Top Dogg, Last meal, Paid cost, R&G, BCT, Ego, Malice, and Doggumentary

Boss Playa<<<<<<<<this joint is one of my favorite Snoop cuts ever, shit is so smooth but with a touch of menace.
Paper'd Up
I Miss That Bitch
Wasn't Your Fault
Batman & Robin
Lollipop
Suited & Booted

I just love the feel of this album & where Snoop is as a man/artist at this point in time. Finally free of No Limit, which was necessary just to get him away from Death Row, this feels like Snoop had a weight lifted off his shoulders & could do what he wanted to do.

It feels more West-Coast than any record he'd made in awhile (with Jelly Roll, Fredwreck, Battlecat, Meech Wells, E-Swift.....basically every Westcoast producer that mattered outside the two biggest) but then again it also had Snoop on multiple Neptunes, Hi-Tek, & Primo tracks.

The most pimped-out album he'd done but that fit the whole motif of him evolving & becoming his own man rather than just being about going hard on hoes (and he saved his best slaps for Suge).

There's even a bit of dare I say maturity on this one that felt natural, coming during the time with the weed hiatus, football league start-up, etc.

He carried the momentum from Paid The Cost into R&G/Blue Carpet but to me this album was the catalyst that for me remains the best of the three.

Like any Snoop album not named Doggystyle, there's no justifying the 75+ minute track length but you pick your spots & there's a lot of great stuff remaining after you locate the joints you skip.

BCT, both the albums that Pharrel was involved with, The Last Meal & Top Dogg are all way better.

shit, Doggfather is better, too.

this may be the third worst Snoop album i've heard only besting Da Game is To Be Sold & Malice In Wonderland.

I mean, I guess Small Pro deserves all opinions on the matter. But judging by this post you're in the minority for sure. So Pro should take that for what it's worth.

i really don't see what's to like about this album. even when he manages to get a decent producer like Jake One, Khalil or Battlecat involved the results are forgettable. he managed to create a marginal devin the dude hook helmed song. that's nearly impossible to do yet he found a way.

They're just sloppy enough. Madlib sometimes pushes that too far but I think Battlecat did a great job here.
