on CD it's still whatever. But Live, though? Live that shit comes alive for real.

Who else? RiitZ. I wanted to not like him because he's a white rapper in another white rapper's crew. Then I listened.

...Fuck. Um...

It's more. Them Odd Future niggas. I didn't want to like any of that shit a year or so ago. Liked Earl, didn't want to even really try the rest. Mellowhype grew on me. So did Tyler. I'm a big Tyler and Earl fan now.

Fuck...EDit. I didn't think I'd fuck with EDit. I do.

Gaslamp killer looks like a fucking lame. but i fuck with his music.

Miguel. Back when he was Miguel Jontel niggas was trying to say he was gonna be a star. I was like, nah. Fuck that nigga. Then I listened and liked it. Now he's blowing up.

I hear what you mean by not sounding dope on CD (even though his latest was album of the year contender) but when you see Homeboy Sandman live he's a total breath of fresh air. Dude is hip-hop and has unmarked energy in his live show.

Das Racist (didnt expect to be rappin as well as they do)

Toro y Moi the only chillwave artist i mess with thus far

Charles Hamilton, thought he was another cog in the Interscope machine. he dressed goofy but I ended up lisen to the music and it spoke for itself.

Thank You! I don't know why people aren't going nuts over them. Especially the NY/Northeast set, their humor is so clearly in line with them.

and I agree with you on Dirty Money. I listened to that album like "Oh of course the first couple songs will be good but I bet this one 'bout to be wack." That went on until the album was over. I had this real frowned up, confused look on my face when I finished listening to that piece.

It probably helps that I don't understand most of the lyrics, because they're probably as bad or worse than the equivalent U.S. stuff.

Some of their R&B stuff is just really catchy and mimics the 90s and stuff from the 2000s (upbeat but not club dance tracks, with production that uses fender rhodes, strings, etc.) that I actually liked. And there are actually a few singers who I think are just extremely good (e.g., JASMINE). I know a lot of R&B people liked The-Dream's record, but that JASMINE record (with the exception of 2 tracks), had some of the best production last year. Other records just sample tracks that I can't hate (e.g., Emi Hinouchi's "Goodie Memories samples The Modulations "Best Days of My Life," which was also used by 9th Wonder on Nas' "2nd Childhood" remix).

Lil B to me is like a shock poster that raps, maybe a shock rapper
and when I think of him in that context, he's LOL
and every now and then he turns in a "regular" sounding verse

like I don't get them all, but I know anyone who made near 700 songs for a single mixtape is bound to have a lot of misses

Sufjan Stevens - When he first started getting Pitchfork love, it was when they were busy praising all the weird folk shit like Devendra Banhart and such. Indie can be trendy like that as they shifted from like post-punk shit to folk to indie pop to dance punk and certain years you will see one particular type of indie rock dominating the high reviews. On account of his weird ass name, I expected Sufjan to be on some white guy wearing a turban and banging pots and pans in the woods with his friends folk shit. I was pleasantly surprised to hear some exceptionally beautiful folk with good vocals.

OFGWKTA - Even though the hype is really fucking it up for me and creating too much crap to sort out when listening (i.e. when I listen instead of picturing Tyler the Creator rapping I sometimes see annoying Lesson aliases getting all riled up) when I first heard it, it was really on some great hope shit. It was like my god, these guys instantly sound like everything I hope to find every time I click the latest hyped rapper. First group in years I felt deserved that level of hype.

Jay Electronica - The name sounded whack as fuck. The songs blew me away.

Johnny Cash - I hate modern country music and I always heard it was real in the older days. I thought it would be cool, but didn't think it would be like listen to regularly and enjoy it cool.

Marvin Gaye - I figured he was somebody you'd have to come from a black household to enjoy. By that I mean, music your parents played around the house so you have fond memories attached to it and thus love it more than other people. Being Puerto Rican, I have that kind of love for Salsa music. I was surprised to hear that Gaye's stuff was just as powerful to somebody with no memories of his music. Some of the shit really blew me away and was much more meaningful than contemporary music, with simpler lyrics.

Bob Dylan - Same deal as Marvin Gaye but figured you had to come from a white household and have ex-hippy parents or grandparents to truly enjoy his music. Once again was presently surprised by how he resonates with people today.

Roc Marciano - Annoyed the shit outta me at first, though it'd never be enjoyable. Grew to love a lot of Marcberg. Guess I had to be in the right mood.

Radiohead - Used to think they were without a doubt the most overrated band in the universe. I've come to see them as exceptionally progressive and worthy of the acclaim they get.

I remember seeing on here people raving about Team Dream so I scoped out Norway and heard the beginning of it and was like I'm probably not going to like this.

I didn't realize I was hooked until I had listened to the entire Teen Dream CD like 5 times through.

shoegaze/dream pop - M83, Cocteau Twins ... them joints just take me away like Calgon.

dubstep - from older heads like Burial and Skream to "brostep" cats like Skrillex. I'm down with the wobble of the newer stuff.

"folktronica"/indie

I love how my musical horizons have grown. and I have to thank OKP for contributing to a good portion of that.

Gotta give it up to the fact that she is embracing new sounds instead of recycling old ones (eh em, Lady Gaga). Well produced and dare I say, catchy. I'll take my lumps on this one, but I will say it is indeed dope.

which certainly qualifies for this topic because i listened on a whim and haven't heard any of her other albums, but it's pretty astounding

i skipped 'circus' because the singles didn't grab me and the reviews seemed to indicate it was less adventurous and worth my while, but if you say this new one's good, i'll listen

...yeah, the production on that album was hot. It has a sexy, dark electronic vibe. It would've been much better if they replaced her nasal sorta-singing with someone who actually had a smidgen of vocal talent.

brit's on my never buy list with dipset, jeezy, and r. kelly, but i still commend her efforts and taste there

>...yeah, the production on that album was hot. It has a sexy,
>dark electronic vibe.

exactly, and even the songs that don't fit that description are good to great, including the neptunes' "why should i be sad"

>It would've been much better if they
>replaced her nasal sorta-singing with someone who actually had
>a smidgen of vocal talent.

it would be interesting to hear a real singer over the same tracks hypothetically, but i think within the limitations of her voice and within the context of what i know about her life at the time (i don't follow tabloids, but certain stars are so big it's impossible to avoid hearing about them), the album works really well; it's well produced not just in the sense of "beats"

I heard Yahh, Bathing apes, and Crank dat...and thought he was the wackest, biggest piece of trash ass joke EVER. Girls literally had to beg me to play his wack ass Crank dat when I did parties...even the Birthday girl one time was like "come on, it's MY birthday!!!!"

Being me, I downloaded his first album just because I knew folks in the South would request songs...and surprisingly, I liked 2-3 songs on a club tip, especially "Donk." And since then, he's still put out dope club songs which are still wack overall, but great in the necessary elements....energy, drums, sometimes melody, catchy hook, and personality. And low key, he's become a trendsetter...everybody's doing that "off beat catch up" flow he did on "Pretty boy swag" and he kinda brought back New Orleans Bounce with "Donk."

pretty much the most underrated career around these days. I mean sure he deserves some hate for making songs that ridiculous to make money. I don't know maybe he was actually being serious as he's young as fuck.

I've heard some verses on Gucci mixtapes, mixtape with Lil' B and parts of "Speakers going hammer" that have shown me he's actually a really good rapper. The hate runs too deep for anybody in here (aside from an open-minded cat like you) to ever notice that.

just the version on OFWGKTA's Radical mixtape. Soulja served that track way harder.

If only I could stand Roscoe Dash's voice. Shit ruined that Flocka song for me too. I liked Waka's verse and loved Wale's verse but really, really can't stand this guy's fucking voice lol.

and even if it's just imitation, I can't see how folks can deny his rap over Kingpin Skinny Pimp's beat (I always forget what he called that track though)

he got a lil' experimental during that Bernard Arnault EP too, mixtapes with Young L and Vinny Cha$e and stuff. He's a weird kid really, not much actual quality comes of it but he's definitely a lot weirder and willing to try off beat shit than people might expect.

Something about these guys grab me. I know they don't rap well...but they can really create an atmosphere and I feel Rocky is just kinda wierd for a mainstream artist and I like that.

His album destroyed G-Unit for me in high school.

But now I find myself getting giddy when a new mixtape drops. I've liked him ever since he connected with Danny Brown and Lil' B.
