Come one, come all.

If you can't/don't want to hang in GD, let this be the place where we speak in generalities (no Marc Jord-o).

somewhat related, I've been trying to figure out the right way to keep the ol' stache looking "full" but not "wild". Trimmers don't bring it down to the optimum level, rather lower than that.

and while looking like Kashif is right in line with my general "theme"...

it's the shape I have problems with at times. I took the rest off when it got too fucked up and just rocked a goatee most of last year. Im to the point now I'm ready to go back to the full beard but it has to be shaped up right from the start or it's a lost cause.

once he passed and I had to find a new shop I realized just how hard it is to find a good full service barber now days.

For the most part I've maintained my own facial hair but like you I love being able to just sit down and have someone else hook it up. It's hard keeping your lines perfectly straight yourself.

Dude had done my beard/goatee shame-ups between 1999 and like '06 or '07, then disappeared off the face of the Earth. He eventually resurfaced out in Vallejo, but I couldn't justify paying a $5 toll for a $7 dollar cut. I really want dude to have come back here. My current barber is okay, but he's on some "quick and dirty" status. About the only thing I like about it is the Al Davis stories and insights, since due's cut Al's hair for over 40 years; so like I know a fair weeks ahead of time that the Raiders worry going to drop Nmandi. But I'd rather have my homie do it. Fuck that shit, I want my goatee looking like Juwan Howard's.

As to your point, I don't think barbers in Cali can even legally use straight razors for cuts. There's all the concerns with AIDS and what not. That's actually something I learned from Davis' barber.

I go to Charles Blades to trim mine, but they don't use straight razors either, but they do quality work...
I've asked and they say most places won't allow their barbers to use them anymore...I'm sure you can find an old school place that does though, just not sure if I trust an old dude's shakey hands and shit though...

Yeah I was raised in cities and all, but my place is really isolation. Not complete isolation, but I don't like 'new' people. People that don't know me. I tend to freak them the fuck out. My wife brought it to my attention recently as a complaint about how she always has to 'explain' me to people who don't get me. I'm just like fuck em, I don't have time to run it all down with the hope that they'll maybe get it. And there are enough people who do that I'm good.

This isn't to mean I can't behave myself in public, I definitely can, and for amusement I can even play the life of the party, but at heart I just want isolation with my family and core friends.

Plus I miss the land. We're starting our 'garden' and it's fucking pitiful. And I can't just go take a walk in the forrest to clear my thoughts. No owls or wolves to pass the time with. This shit is for the burbs.

And I don't think its going to be changing in the coming months at least.

When FireBrand and I "discuss" the urban versus non-urban lifestyles, I kind of lean on this, and the reason why I'd flock to a less congested area.

I'm very much the same way, and while I think things might have been different if things played out more ideally the first time I moved...

ATL to NYC. But it wasn't until I got away from the city that I realized it's not really who I am. And this return to the city life is only amplifying that. I'm realizing how much of a 'city' facade I put up pretty much all of my life save the last five years.

On the real... I've talked to the wife and we're on track to shift the other way, but it's going to take some time to make it happen in a more permanant fashion than last time. The biggest issue though is the economy and work.

Shit man I just want to farm.

I've been strugglin with this as well. Been in Philly my whole life. Sure, I've traveled all the fuck over, crossed a few seas, spent time in some remote places, etc, but I always end up back in philly. Due to many changes over the last few years I find myself a single homeowner who can't stop thinking about working a farm and just being out of the urban grind.

There's actually quite a nice niche market for growing food locally these days... hmmmm

depending on how much of the "burbs" are sprawl, I'd say the country.

because what I really dislike is sprawl, and overflow-ed streets.

is something right off a BART line (Bay Area's subway) just outside the Oakland/SF area. There are a lot of new condos going up in Eastern Alameda and Contra Costa Counties that have condos built right above or a short walking distance to retail and dining. That gives me the perks of the city without the day to day hassles.

being from Indianapolis, even though that's a city, my grandma put money aside before she died to send me to summer camp every year and I got to meet regular white people and became quite the nature boy and shit...so when I ha a choice of moving to NYC where my family is or Bay Area it was a no brainer. I'm a block from Macarthur Bart, 15 minute drive or ride to SF and 20 minute drive to the top of a mountain where there's redwood trees, wild animals and all that shit.
I love the East Coast and LA but I find the Bay to be the only HUGE metropolitan area that you can escape in less than a day...
If we had kids, I'd be looking at something maybe in Albany or something...not sure about the public schools in the town...

I've had this shit since NOVEMBER and it isn't going away. I'm a little concerned I might have picked up the flu as well since I was never healthy enough to get my flu shot. SO I was home Friday with the little one and we both hit the doctors. He had a left ear infection and seems to be clearing up pretty well. Doctor gave me 3 weeks of Ceftin (I've already been through a 2 wk course of it back in Nov.) and a 5-day course of Tamiflu. I'm feeling a little better but still have a killer headache and enough snot to supply my son's kindergarten class for a month.

The good news is BEER. My wife ran two swaps on Friday, so we now have 24 different brews to try out (well... when I'm off the drugs) and almost all of them are ones I haven't had before. Breweries include Victory, Stone, Founders, Flying Dog, Fegley's, Sam Adams, Breckenridge, Ithaca, etc. etc.

And when my wife went to get her cases for the swap, as a special treat she picked up a case of BROTHER THELONIUS ABBEY ALE: http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/beer-brotherThelonious.htm

FANTASTIC.

I don't think I'd had anything from North Coast before, but I'll def. be on the lookout for it. It didn't score that well on Beer Advocate, but screw those guys, they're all up their own arses.

As I say below I get a little irritated at gimmicky names and tie-ins but at least these guys are contributing some of the proceeds to a jazz education charity. *bottoms up*

I just want to wake up and NOT feel like I'm sick.... it's been ages. I've been drinking less beer so have kept a few pounds off, but every time I feel better and go do something - sports, yardwork, a day out with the kids - I wind up right back where I was, and this time was the worst. Hopefully the increasingly warm weather will help out too.

They got a killer brew called "Damnation" my favorite shit...they kinda do a belgian style thing...they got another one a lot of people like "Consecration Ale"...it's a little on the sour side for me but if you can ever get some of their stuff shipped to you, it's by far the best beer in Cali imo

On the other hand... that beer DID sound interesting.

I'm always a little irritated at gimmicky beer names/tie-ins, but it helps if the beers are great.

I got my 2011 holiday ale brewed already. It's been fermenting actively for A MONTH (usu. takes 3-4 days for avg. strength beers). 'The Breakfast Plate Special' - Brown ale with oatmeal, Belgian yeasts and a shitload of maple syrup. I'll rack it again this wkd. and then bottle it in another two weeks... going to be hard to wait until the holidays though!

the first time I did it was great, but I kegged it w/o aging it AT ALL (was still figuring out what I was doing) so it constantly was producing large quantities of sediment. Hopefully this time with propoer aging & bottle conditioning it'll be out of the park.

>my uncle makes wine, not the same, but something fun, and

That's awesome. I'm not as interested in wine but I have done two batches of cider - which is essentially apple wine, even though we tend to equate it more with beer. My 2009 batch used an English cider yeast came out too dry for my tastes; the 2010 I used wild yeast. I haven't tried it yet and am a little nervous!

Also brewed my first batch for a specific event - I'm keg conditioning it (as opposed to force-carbonating which I've done with all my other kegs) and bought a mini CO2 charger and a picnic tap to fit the homebrew kegs. *fingers crossed*

>sorry you're not feeling well... and personally, i find it
>hard to enjoy beer with unclear sinuses

I always enjoy beer, but yeah, when the olfactory goods aren't working it dulls the taste of everything. And I have a new dubbel on tap that seems to be pretty good, so I'm really looking forward to getting the full effect, assuming I get better this time around.

North Coast stuff is easy to get around here because it's just over in Fort Bragg and they make some excellent brews. Their Scrimshaw pilsner is one of my favorite beers of all time. If you're really up for a kick in the neck, try their Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. The Pranqster Belgian Ale is awesome too.

Have you ever tried running a Neti pot on your nose?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neti_pot

I use one whenever I get sick and it really shortens the duration of my sickness.

I'll be on the lookout. Stuff's not cheap though (hence the swaps - in PA we're obligated to buy by the case, unless we buy at a bar which drives the cost-per-bottle up considerably.)

*edit* matter of fact, I served a homebrew recently that was in an old Old Rasputin bottle. Funny.

I'm not a huge Pils fan but am always willing to try new attempts to convert me.

Doing it *too* much can cause dryness (and easy nosebleeds) or prolonged infections (which seems like it might be the case with you).

I have one that I do —whether I'm sick or not— about three times a week, but I wouldn't dare do it more often than that unless I'm sick.

The North Coast stuff is sold in six packs (Scrimshaw and Red Seal) and four packs (Pranqster and Old Rasputin) in most stores around here and they're all about $7.99. The Brother Thelonious ale is only sold in single larger bottles (I want to say 1 pint, 5 ounce bottles) for usually around $7. Every so often, one of the bigger liquor stores will get one of their special limited brews in single bottles, but they're usually too expensive for my usually Rolling Rock-sized budget.

obviously I've had a prolonged infection but certainly dryness has never been an issue.

I do about the same if I'm not sick, or if I've been doing yard work. I usu. wear a mask but even with that a wood chipper, mower or leaf shredder generates so much dust it can get inside easily.

>The Brother
>Thelonious ale is only sold in single larger bottles (I want

Good price for a big bottle. A few boutique places around here carry corked & caged bombers and I haven't been disappointed yet - and have also found that the aged, corked & caged bottled will be much better than a new 12 ouncer of the same brew (most dramatically: Omeggang Rare Vos).

>but they're
>usually too expensive for my usually Rolling Rock-sized

Nothing wrong with Rock.

But yeah, it's hard to jusitfy $15 on a single bottle of beer, so we've only done it on special occasions where we take it to a BYO restaurant in lieu of a bottle of wine.

I know a few people have changed their hearts on it since they got bought and brewing moved to... Camden, I think. But to my tongue, a cold pony on a hot day, or after a good paddle match, is a great pleasure.

That said, there are very few craft beers out there I'd pass over in favor of a Rock.

At some places out here, it's $5.99 for a six pack (sometimes a bit more, but never more than $7).

Twelve packs are usually $12.99, but sometimes in summer, it goes on sale for $9.99!

Loved it.

It's got the Arrogant Bastard high alcohol content level but tastes better to me.

When you add in the music geek cool factor it's a can't miss.

The cork on the 22 ounce versions can be a motherfucka though.

That's almost an IPA, where Brother Thelonious is an Abbey ale — much darker and more complex flavor, as opposed to the just flat out bittersweetness of Arrogant Bastard.

Yeah, if you couldn't tell, I don't like Arrogant Bastard, but I really really like North Coast brews.

laughing is contagious, but i think other people can infect the way you laugh. i've noticed over the last year or so my laugh has morphed into a combination of the title character in amadeus and one of my coworkers.

can you pull out the "won/nominated for __ grammy's" card and say that you historically don't agree with who's won or nominated? to me it's an all or nothing deal. you can't have your cake and eat it, too. so if you celebrate the grammy's, you're tacitly acknowledging their authority on good music.

Especially considering that is my other account. Well, one of them anyway. It's just I made a conscious decision this year not to bother even seeing who was nominated or won so I hadn't clicked that topic. Of course, the title gives it away, doesn't it?
