I've always heard the Nas/AZ comparison for his early stuff but kinda only the AZ but never the Nas (I see it later in his career)

in 95/96 he was a really big nas/AZ fan, and consciously imitated their style.

same way all of nas's early demos sound exactly like g rap.

it takes time to find your own voice, even for the great ones.
