"Budweiser In The Disco: the song Bryan Adams wishes he never made"
Fri Jan-21-11 11:25 AM by scorpion

this is spin-off-ish...

I saw that araQual put up the link to the Shake Your Body remix that Questo referenced in that BBC MJ documentary....the remixer of Shake Your Body is John Luongo...

I googled and saw that Luongo granted an interview to disco-disco.com
(a dope website if you dig disco--they have very in depth interviews with imprtant folks from the scene)

Here's the Cliff Notes

in 1978, 18 yr old Bryan Adams--fresh out of the band Sweeny Todd, signed a single deal with A&M Records in Canada...he and his writing/production partner, Jim Vallance, came up with a white Disco groove called Let Me Take You Dancing....

The single made a little noise but then A&M brought in John Luongo to touch it up and make it hit...Luongo went into the studio with Adams and Vallance and added some percussion, handclaps, etc...Adams and Vallance were very pleased with the recodring session....however, Luongo felt that the tempo needed to be jacked up a taste...so Luongo sped up the track, which in turn pitched up Adams' vocal...

when Adams heard the final product, he was heated because of how his voice sounded...A&M released the remix anyway and it caught fire in the Northeastern US discos....

Adams was granted an album deal by A&M based on the success of the Let Me Take You Dancing remix...but to this day, Bryan Adams despises the remix and in turn, the original version and never wants it to be heard again...he's tried to keep it off You Tube, but its still there...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlpO1mohwrU

upon listening to Adams's vox on the remix, I was like "damn!, I'd be pissed, too..."..mofo sound like he's in a boy band...but then...

I found Jim Vallance's website, and he tells his version of the story...he says that the remix made Bryan sound like a chipmunk, etc...BUT he also says that back then, Bryan sang in a different style...Vallance has snippets of the original and the remix...

http://www.jimvallance.com/01-music-folder/songs-folder-may-27/pg-song-adams-let-me-take.html

upon listening to the original...I think Bryan Adams need to have his Diet Springsteen ass a big glass of Shut The Fuck Up with a dash of Get Over Yourself....nobody made you sing like that but yourself, holmes...

why is Disco like musical porn?...if you did a disco record, fuck it--you did it...dont try to act like the spirit of Boogie forced your ripped jean Busch drinking ass to make a Disco record...

FOH, Bryan Adams...

It ain't like they were at the underground Disco Spots. They went to 54, stood in line in their John Travolta suits, and got high, and hopped a cab back to New Jersey. Think of it as the Suburbanites who come to the big clubs downtown. They kick it, get fucked up, and bounce. They ain't there for the music. They're there for the $5.00 Effen and Cranberry. AND, let's be real. The music at the BIG Discos ain't the same shit we grooved to at the Roller Skatin' parties over at Leroy's Roller Disco.

Exhibit A:

The soundtrack to "Thank God It's Friday":
Side A

1. Love & Kisses: "Thank God It's Friday (Alec R. Costandinos) -4:13
* Producer: Alec R. Costandinos.
2. Pattie Brooks: "After Dark" (Pattie Brooks) - 7:50
* Producer: Simon Soussan
3. Donna Summer: "With Your Love" (Giorgio Moroder, Pete Bellotte, Donna Summer) - 3:58
* Producers: Giorgio Moroder, Pete Bellotte
4. Donna Summer: "Last Dance" (Paul Jabara) - 8:08
* Producers: Bob Esty, Giorgio Moroder

Side B

1. Paul Jabara: "Disco Queen" (Paul Jabara) - 3:45
* Producers: Bob Esty, Paul Jabara
2. Cameo: "Find My Way" (Johnny Melfi) - 4:56
* Producer: Larry Blackmon
3. The Commodores: "Too Hot Ta Trot" (Lionel Richie, Milan Williams, R. LaPread, Thomas McClary, W. Orange, William King) - 3:24
* Producers: The Commodores, James Carmichael
4. Wright Bros. Flying Machine: "Leatherman's Theme" (Arthur G. Wright) - 3:22
* Producer: Arthur G. Wright
5. Marathon: "I Wanna Dance" (Pete Bellotte, Thor Baldursson) - 5:58
* Producer: Pete Bellotte

and here's the "A Night at 54" compilation:

Track listing
Side one

1. "Le Freak" - Chic
2. "Let's All Chant" - Michael Zager Band
3. "YMCA" - Village People
4. "Disco Nights (Rock-Freak)" - GQ
Side two

1. "Take Me Home" - Cher
2. "I Love the Night Life (Disco 'Round)" - Alicia Bridges
3. "I Found Love" - Love and Kisses
4. "Last Dance" - Donna Summer

Side three

1. "Got to Be Real" - Cheryl Lynn
2. "I Got My Mind Made Up" - Instant Funk
3. "Hot Shot" - Karen Young
4. "I Love America" - Patrick Juvet

Side four

1. "Souvenirs" - Voyage
2. "Hot Jungle Drums and Voo Doo Rhythm" - D.C. LaRue
3. "In the Bush" - Musique
4. "Instant Replay" - Dan Hartman
5. "Shake Your Groove Thing" - Peaches & Herb

c'mon man...that shit ain't all that Funky. They had some shit you could do The Hustle to, and not get too sweaty. Run to the bathroom, do a line, and come back and refill your champagne glass. Don't get me wrong, some of that shit was heat, but as a rule? You weren't gonna hear no Crown Heights Affair at 54...

Let's not get it twisted. They didn't come for the MUSIC. They came for the drugs and the atmosphere. A smarter man than me said it best:

"You know what REALLY killed the Disco Scene? Herpes."

Meaning, once people started pissing fire and developing coke habits, the scene wound down. There's a price to be paid for kickin' it...

but if I were a betting man, I'd bet against it.

Unless you qualify it. do they mean these mixes were made *AT* 54, or by DJ's who'd at some point *played* at 54.

Some of those songs don't fit in in a club setting. and if you REALLY wanna nitpick, "Word Up" by Cameo came out in 86, which is the same year that 54 closed. So I guess it depends on whether or not they were playing advance copies.

As someone who was actually a fan of Bryan Adams for many years, I think this disco joint is in the top 10 of his entire discography so he better just embrace it.

didn't have a little groove under the belly that a cat like John JellyBean benetiz couldn't have flipped back in 82 or 83 and mixed it up?

i mean his synth rock stuff like "run to you" could have had some groove to it.

he ain't the first act to distance himself from his first stuff, I mean Sheryl Crow does, her first album on A&M sounded like a Paula Abdul knock off as did Alanis Moressette's debut, as Usher and Janet Jackson loath there debut albums.

Bryan Adams laugh if you want, but dude done had a good run despite being a Broke Springsteen,Mellencamp,Loggins,etc... dude hit big.

"summer of 69" and everything that I do,I do for love and those soundtrack cuts all say he will be alright regardless of Humbling beginnings.

Adams didn't want to be a Canidian Lief Garrett/Shaun Cassidy/Rex Smith, or have a mini run like Andy Gibb and then disappear like Casper. I get it.

straight lacve stiff white cats ain't trying to be associated with disco,though if the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart amongest other Rock and Pop acts did Disco then his unknown behind had to bite that bullet.

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

They are both on the same album (which BTW isn't a disco-albumit's just those two songs and possibly Stanley's third contribution that sounds disco, the other guys were not writing disco-stuff at all) and damn if "sure..." doesn't get the disco-rock vibe right...

That would be something like this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDTE8DpkKE4 or this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHhxonlG558
(both great songs BTW). The bassline, guitar-sound/verse-riff and drum-pattern as well as the lushness in production and backing-vocals in "Sure knows something" is obviously (?) a byproduct of disco's popularity; rock bands in the mainstream didn't use that approach prior to disco outside of a few exceptions. Anyway, it's not disco of course but it qualifies as *disco-rock* IMO (BTW, "Miss you" on the other hand is a rockband trying to play disco IMO, it's not disco-rock)...

I can sort of hear it, because the bassline is OUT in front instead of being played through a chord. It sounded like a "cool '70s" sort of song, that carried on into the early next decade before it got MTV-ed out.

>They are both on the same album (which BTW isn't a

and it IS better than that "cheese-fest". "I Was Made For Lovin' You" damn near sounds like Journey (during a certain era) right there. I can almost see the Chevy Monza wagon pulling up in the distance as the first few notes of that song starts up...

As soon as the music scene saw disco as something to stray away from, they basically treated it as rock music that had evil backwards masking messages on it and claim they never do such music or was under some evil influence & peer pressure...yeah right.

Today almost every rock artist is everyone is doing dance tunes aka updated disco music, smh.

not much into bolton, however the stuff with him and face was cool imo.

interesting tidbit on bolton, word is that him and james ingram use to be cool and that bolton took some vocal style riffs from ingram and they haven't been cool in a real long,long time.

In response to Reply # 0

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6V2jI-HV5k&feature=fvst) i remember ppl sayin it was a "return to his disco/dance music roots", n i was like "whuhhh?". and to that effect i always thought the Chicane track was a bit of a nod to his disco beginnings. and i always read here n there about his disdain for that part of his career but didnt think it ran that deep. never saw the big deal personally. the more he tries to shit on it or shut it down, the more ppl are gonna seek it out and shine more light on it.

btw, i been a longtime Bryan fan. call him he faux-this or that, but he's got some classic light-rock stuff. and technically, his career has been nothing short of huge. and LONG.

listen to "cuts like a knife" when ur depressed n heartbroken and u may have a different opinion on the guy.

fuck it, I think that's one of their best ALBUMS... the ones with the hits aren't solid plays all the through like this one.

I don't know if you can call it straight disco. There are some "disco"-isms in a number of those tracks but... nah.
