"Poll question: Redman vs. Eminem"

Yeah, I know Em said Red is the GOAT and all but it's still a worthy comparison. Now for the comparison....

Red got Whut Thee Album?!, Dare Iz A Darkside, Muddy Waters while Eminem has The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show.

Both in their primes were super lyrical geniuses with funny senses of humor and very entertaining but who would you say was best when you factor in everything (songs, albums, lyrics, flow, delivery etc etc)?

Poll result (42 votes)
Redman (35 votes)Vote
Eminem (7 votes)Vote

the only aspect where there's any real comparison is skill, and I'd tend to give Redman the edge there slightly due to his natural rapping ability

You basically say, ok they were both super lyrical geniuses with senses of humor, but
who was the better artist?

The only way Em has a chance is if you focus solely on lyrics and rhyme patterns, because
"songs, albums, flow, delivery"...
^^ Redman's crushing him in all of that.

1. (19). Redman - Muddy Waters: 9.41
2. (26). Redman - Dare Iz a Darkside: 9.26
3. (88). Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP: 8.64
4. (95). Eminem - Slim Shady LP: 8.56
5. (171). Redman - Whut Thee Album: 8.18
6. (445). Eminem - Eminem Show: 7.21

Basically, Redman in a landslide. That said, I have listened to Eminem WAY more than Redman, but I was a pre-teen/teenager in his prime and a white kid at that. Redman didn't really enter the equation until college other than the Blackout! LP because I was a Wu-Tang fan.

not even for a second. When you think about it though, Em is touted as an amazing technical rapper (deservedly so), but Red out Eminems Em in that area PLUS makes better albums.

I'm not saying Em is wack overall at all despite the fact that his recent output blows, I mean Redman's recent output isn't anything to go crazy about either BUT at the end of the day Redman released three amazing albums in a row, each of which are better than Em's best IMO. So yeah......

but saying Em is being disrespected because he isn't as good as Redman when both are at their best is disrespect to Redman though

>Redman is better in every imaginable way possible

Red does not have as much variety in lyrical content as Em
Red is not as technically impressive as Em at his best flow-wise or rhyme schemes wise
Red is not as good a battle rapper as Em

Red has better production choices, better at crafting songs and albums, has an infinitely better discography, but he cannot rap as good as Em at his best, no way

Em's whole narrative arc is something that barely any other rapper has. And that really is the thing that makes him who he is.

Redman makes better music for sure though.

take them both rapping at their best, and Eminem blows Redman out of the water IMO

Someone in this thread called Redman a "super lyrical genius"...really? Please show me examples of that. He has a lot of personality and sounds amazing over muddy 90's sample-based beats, but I can't imagine Redman kicking an acapella that would hold my attention for more than 20 seconds

I be the super-lyrical individual I be splittin through
that Teflon material to knock Big Ben off of schedule
Better move with a set of tools
I be doin it to mics when I'm a, heterosexual
I load the mic then cock, drop it like three-quarters
when I slaughter don't get caught in the water
Cause the Brick's got it's own World Order
Leave your bitch in shock like the third rail caught her
Styles stay deeper than orca, I float the seven seas with ease
Did more drugs than pharmacies
So call me that lyrical Genovese, you can't compare
Get you steppin like stairs, frats, sororities
Don't make me bring it on back I fuck up the majority
of niggaz lookin hard at me, I Port em like Authority
And when my nigga Meth shine
out the inner How High mobile rollin three dimes at a time

Verse Two: Redman

Yo, suck my dick out of animosity
The velocity will fly that head and freeze your camps like pottery
to give lobotomies to all you rap colonies
And shunt your million dollar investment, to economy
Impossibly might be the one in black leather
Name tag sayin 'caution when wet by the track wetter'
The hash spreader, I love the grimy shit
Even my girl did grimy shit to me and I went back with her
Three years for carrying a loaded handgun
But it's forever when a nigga and he lands one
to your cranium
That red dot on your forehead it's not cause you Arabian
(Yo watch you say to him!)
You caught up in a tight situation
I should start erasin your whole organization for makin
wack tunes while my whole platoon rock the basement
You couldn't come close if I gave you my bookin agent
Or producer, royalty points twelve shot loaded Luger
Even a crowd to get you souped up, you're still wack
I peel caps, on the regular
Destroy MC's et cetera, creep like The Predator
Fuck you, your label moms and your editor
Give you two to the jugular, blood be spreadin
all on my shirt, the king of the flirt shittin
Bitches hit me off more than New Edition
(tweet-tweet-tweet-tweet, tweet-tweet-tweet-tweet)
I make them pigs heart skip a beat from the steel physique
So Iron Lung
Get on the mic and break em off a sumthin sumthin

Em is a monster, and so is Redman
the only thing I can say Em has on Red that's not a debate is range of topics
Redman is an anomaly in that he's incredibly intricate and technically without peer in his particular area of the music
he's just so effortless with it you'd have to really think about how well his stuff is written

45. "Agreed about the ''effortless''-part..."

Eminem's more intricate flows sound too "patterned", as if he's decided on a flow to use and then put the words in. Regardless of how great the lyrics are, the rhythmic freedom Redman has just isn't there.

Not to sound corny and compare two guys who happened to be white in an artform mostly associated with black artists (that's REALLY not what I'm getting at) but I'd like to compare eminem to Dave Brubeck in that there's a stiffness in the rhythmic patterns that is compensated with complexity (intricate flows in Eminems case, strange time-signatures in Brubecks). It's just that it doesn't really compensate, at least not compared with people with a more effortless and fluid approach to rhythm. And again, this isn't about race; I have no horse in that, um, race...
