When the project was first announced, this was gonna drop on Duck Down like the album w/Smif & Wesson did. IDK why Duck Down wouldn't release this as an album....cause it's way better than Monumental was imo.

this album wouldn't sound the way it does if they had to use everything & giving it a 'release date' with free access to it all at once will expose both acts to younger fans online & remind old-heads they're still out there doing it.

The thought is that will lead to more financially fruitful opportunities down the line as it has for others.

We'll see how it works for them but hopefully it will, regardless this was a quality project.

It's free because Pete didn't want to deal with sample clearance (which is also why it's his best work in some time).

On the flipside their mystique is still intact, that's something you can't say for a lot of rap groups.

which due to rush-hour traffic in route home & then to the Kendrick DJ Skee live show broadcast, was in the car for in its entirety.

I gotta say, Pete Rock brought some HEAT with him on this one.

Camp Lo sounds cool in spots as long as you can do what I've been doing since Uptown Saturday Night & not really concentrate too hard on what they're actually saying because it's usually pretty empty.

But vocally they sound good & complement each other while not messing up the superior production end too much.

I can't help but think that some better rap veterans or the right young-hungry MC's could have made this shit a true late-career home run for Soul Brother #1.

This is the best shit I've heard him do behind the boards since the Clinton Administration.

Sidenote: I find myself amazed that I ever actually liked Talib Kweli.

He's on that one joint here (managing to sound vastly inferior on a track compared to a mid-90's also-ran like Geechee Dan) with that typical weak-ass voice, corny-cadence, overstuffed bars except nowadays he ain't even saying anything at all.

Haven't listened to an album from dude since Eardrum (which The Lesson hyped as a return to form which was just 'eh' to me) but anytime I hear him on a record here or there with somebody I get that Common-playing-TI's-dad-in-American-Gangster cringe of embarrassment.

I can't take either of those two remotely serious anymore.

Thought & Mos still sound good to my ears, the other I can't fuck with even a little bit & haven't been able to for awhile.

That was a tank.

I know it's Suede.

Like everyone else I bought Uptown back then when 'Luchini' hit.

Never thought dude was ever remotely close to a top-tier MC of his era or now, nor met anyone else who would say differently.

He's still much better than Kweli on this new record.

that's what I learned from this project. Maybe he needs to do more free
joints so he can just run wild on the sampling tip. Pete needs to stay
off the mic though.

Shit still sound good don't get me wrong, but the vocal levels are all over the place and I feel like Pete's kicks could be punching even more throughout. Solid solid 'unmixed tape' though.

In response to Reply # 0

Pete Rock's production is the star of this. As others have said, I haven't heard him provide consistent heat like this since like 1998. Glad to hear that he's able to clear upper echelon shit.

Camp Lo does their thing. Honestly, they might as well be rapping in French, cause I still don't understand what they're talKing about, but the flow, cadence, and mic presence is ill enough that It still sounds dope.

Minor quibble: that phony vocal disotorted "G-child" sounding shit that pops up on a few tracks get annoying. I wonder why they bothered with it. Serves no purpose.

But yes, damn good album overall.

Throughout the album (mixtape, whatever) becomes incredibly grating/irritating

"Yo, 80 BLOCKS FROM TIFFANYS"

"This is 80... Blocks.. from TIFFANYS"

"80 BLOCKS 80 BLOCKS"

OK I GET THAT WE'RE 80 BLOCKS FROM TIFFANY'S LEAVE IT ALONE.

Am I alone in this...? Maybe this is the standard for mixtapes, which I seldom listen to btw.

Am I the only one who finds it incredibly irritating? I didn't mean to sound elitist or whatever, but the concept of overstating the project name at every possible instance is just unnecessary.

I know some people don't enjoy it that much, but I wouldn't say don't listen to mixtapes because of it

If that's what comes with the territory, then so be it. I love listening to whole albums and maybe I'll learn to tune it out. This project is so good though that it doesn't really repel me from listening to it again and again.

not everyone know what you are listening to, be it in your car, during a D.J. set, at someone's house, in a store, barbershop etc. they may only here one song but surely they will hear 80 Blocks from Tiffany's. Considering how many mixtapes are out there you may never find it if you don't know the artist or the name of the mix tape.

I'm about to be THAT guy. The guy who comes through a post where it is nothing but praise and disagrees

I'm about halfway through this and its rather.......ok? decent?

Its not really impressing me on any level.....beat wise or lyric wise, which is odd because PR and Camp Lo have been a part of some of my favorite shit of all time

maybe the last 12 tracks will change my mind?

I think it is overall pretty decent like a 3/5 , I think Suede (he is the lighter voice right?) is allot better than Cheeba now

I started diggin PRs beats allot more in the second half of the mixtape
stuff like "Pot of Butta" "Mafungo"

I feel like this mixtape is kinda long but I'll def come back for a relisten later this week (to see if my opinion stays the same)

and that high pitched voice needs to STFU

Pete kills the beats.

Camp Lo does their "not saying shit" shit like always.

The flow of the album and arrangements are great.

It's just a great listen from 1 - 25.
