"can we talk about Ringo Starr?"

1) why does he/did he get so little respect as a drummer with the Beatles? is it because the name "Ringo" sounds silly? his perceived aloof personality? he's not (and wasn't) a terrible drummer, he kept the pocket nicely. he doesn't sound amateurish like...a Meg White, for instance. were people wanting him to sound like John Bonham, Keith Moon or something? i never got the criticism of his drumming. were people just clowning in general...like we unfoundedly clown Tito Jackson?

2) i'm trying to listen to his solo catalog starting from the beginning. i understand the concept and what he was trying to achieve, but Sentimental Journey is kinda brutal...and kinda pointless, imo. any preferences/recommendations/things to look out for from solo Ringo?

I believe that statement was made in reference to the two week stint where Ringo quit the band during the recording of the white album and Paul held down the drums in the studio

Which he was, but that doesn't mean that he was/is a bad drummer at all. In fact, he was a pretty damn good drummer; he's just not as good at what he does as Paul/Jon/George were at what they do/did. I got no hate for dude at all.

However, you gotta admit that "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus Garden" are both corny, especially the former.

i grew up loving Yellow Submarine. i'm not familiar with Octopus Garden off the bat, let me get my youtube on...

edit: oh shit, that's on Abbey Road. i can't front on anything on that album. kinda corny, yeah, but i like it.

Grew up loving it too. Then about 10 years ago I listened to it again with fresh ears, and released how fricking corny it was.

>edit: oh shit, that's on Abbey Road. i can't front on
>anything on that album. kinda corny, yeah, but i like it.

I agree that the album is pretty flawless. But that cuts on the corny side and definitely stands out. I still like it though.

Did they used to show Beatles and Elvis movies on Sunday afternoons in your market?

That was essentially my first real immersion into music, really... A lot of people look at me strange when I say that.

But yeah, Yellow Submarine was my favorite at the time because it was animated... but I had NO FUCKING CLUE what it was supposed to be about.

>Did they used to show Beatles and Elvis movies on Sunday

not sure what day though. i wasn't living here at the time, but i'd come and visit family and all those things were so cool to me. which is really strange because here was my family in the midst of the big city and i lived in a lily white suburb outside of Saginaw and we didn't get nearly as much of the establishment's vanguard entertainment. LOL.

it's been ages since i've seen a clip of it. i don't think i've ever seen the whole thing.

and also he is the lest talented at songwriting as the other 3 but you needed him...anyone fronting on him needs to listen to Tommorrow never knows he killed that shit.

His drummin was perfect for what the beatles were they didn't need an Boham or Moon.

add to the fact he was sorta aloof and I guess the least one girls wanted.

Then when George started writing songs equally john and Paul.. Ringo never step up to the level of the other 3.

Ringo Starr was lightweight, and i mean he is like Miami Heat bench player where Mccartney, Lennon and Harrison are like Lebron, D Wade and Bosh.

They may not have the same clout in terms of fame and industry respect, but if they offer a technical opinion on music, I'd listen.

And I'd respect their opinion on PLAYING if not on songwriting lol

(btw wasn't "Stomp" bigger than "Strawberry Letter 23"? I think "I'll Be Good To You" was probably bigger than both...)

I like his country album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrHBLLk9Dyw

The thing with Ringo is that he was always a ham. He sang the whimsical, sappy songs because he was into whimsical, sappy music.

I love that he played so straight. No nonsense. Strictly kept time and did it well.

And then with his "all star" band he basically got whoever HE wanted to play with because he knew he could. Like, "Hey, I was in the most popular band of all time, wanna jam?"

Who would say no?

And for that, I think Ringo is alright.

(yes, most of his solo albums are awful, but those first few — yeah, not too shabby)

a few yrs back when I was really listening to The Beatles catalogue for the first time rather than just skimming, I made it a point to check out Ringo's beats, and dude was gettin funky...I think its just the thing to do to clown Ringo because he wasnt on par with the other 3 as songwriters....you hit it on the head with the "Tito Jackson" effect...

Anybody sayin Ringo couldnt play is just not listening or hating...

...lead track off the "RINGO" LP ....but its basically a beatles song minus Paul and +Billy Preston ...i think it might be the only non beatles joint with 3 of the former beatles members on it

as for his drumming.. im no expert on the drums, but as a huge Beatles fan, i always felt the drums were one of the best elements of their songs..

as was pointed out yesterday, he's not regarded as the best or one of the top __ drummers in popular music history as John and Paul are often regarded as the best or among the best songwriters in popular music history.

he gets plenty respect.

It apparently isn't enough that Beatles are generally considered to have more classic songs/albums than other rock-bands, no, they also invented every subgenre of rock (and they invented Hip-Hop and dance-music too according to some fools...) and their drummer just has to be much better than given credit for as well.

Of course, the "shitty" drummer in the multi-platinum band is a phenomenon in itself. See also:Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) and of course Lars Ulrich (Metallica). Had those bands not been mega, I suspect noone would even notice the drumming in those bands. However, due to their popularity, these guys are put under the microscope and since neither of them are exactly great (actually, I dig Charlie Watts but whatever, a lot of people think he sucks) but still perfectly competent, they are used as some sort of weapon *against* the bands, like "Yeah but the drummer is shit..."

In the case of the Beatles, their peers were acts like Gerry&the Pacemakers and the Hollies (and Beach Boys in the US). How often do people even talk about the drumming in those band?. That's how you were supposed to play that type of music but since Beatles are mega, people compare Ringo with Keith Moon and Mitch Mitchell and go "Dude sucks"...

Basically, I find both sides of the argument pretty silly

39. "The Problem With Ringo Starr Is He's A Drummer Who Wants To Sing"
In response to Reply # 0

Ringo is a great drummer, not the best but knows his way around a drum set, knows when to stay in the pocket or not, and when to be soft or loud, but when it comes to him writing songs or trying to do vocals, he sucks ass...for reals, and I think he and everyone knows it but he was a Beatle so nobody really confronts him on that fact.

Personally he needs to stop all that singing shit and stick to what he knows best and that's just drum & percussion, his songwriting is okay if you want to go for cheesy or whimsical but he should hand those songs off to someone else to sing not for himself.

I've always told people what Ringo needs to do is just get up with Paul McCartney and just become Paul's main drummer & percussionist or make albums together, cause both aren't really making great albums as solo artists anymore...especially Ringo.

Ringo has to be one of the most adaptable drummers ever. especially considering all of the stylistic changes that john paul and george took him through.hard rock, soft rock, rockabilly, proto-metal, country, blues, psyche-rock, motown soul, music hall, baroque music, idian music etc etc. When any one of the main writers introduced some new vocabulary into the music, Ringo never missed a beat. His drumming AND singing were essential to the beatles sound.

as far as his solo catalog goes, its important to note that his first two projects were more or less vanity/art projects. His first proper rock/pop album was RINGO, which was actually pretty good

Jordan!

Really enjoy what his drumming brought to the Beatles compositions.

Although I do find it curious that aside from ancient black & white beatles vids, I can't seem to find ANY footage of him on drums by himself. When he tours now he always has another drummer with him... What's that about?

Also, Paul played drums on Dear Prudence, which is the ENTIRE shit.

In response to Reply # 0

Generally considered the first rock drummer (As oppose others before who were more jazz trained drummers)

The first drummer to be on a raised platform

The first rock drummer to hold their sticks in the matched grip

I've heard others but can't think of any right now. I've always liked that fact that his beats where almost melodic in it's self. His drumming however limited was always precise and never sloppy, even on songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows" or "A Day In The Life"

Contrary to popular (?) opinion, there was rock between the early rock'n'roll stuff and the british invasion era. I mean, is the drumming on all the surf-rock stuff not rock-drumming? And what about all the frat-rock stuff? I think you need to be more specific on how/why he was the first rock-drummer...
