If Nas wanted to make art with Premo, he would.

He apparently doesn't.

This isn't a pizza where you get to order your toppings the way you want(product)

Its art.

And the KD albums had some joints, especially the 2nd one.

Illmatic Nas is not walking through that door. Not sure why some of yall cant just accept that.

I'm going to start demanding every artist that drops make an album with DJ Premier.

Jay? Premo!

Ghostface? Premo!

Kendrick? Premo!

Tyler, Armand Hammer, Little Simz, Common, the Roots, Blu. Premo, Premo, Premo!

At some point some of these dudes aren't even rap fans, they are just historians.

If the sounds you only exclusively enjoy lasted 5-6 years you aren't a fan of the genre, you are fan of that specific period of time. Rap has been around what, 30 years? And these dudes enjoyed 5 years...6 tops?

That's 16% or whatever.

Lazy historians at that. The sad thing is that we did a shitload of complaining DURING THE ALLEGEDLY AMAZING TIME IN HIPHOP that lots of people don’t seem to want to move past now.

I remember the crying about IWW. I do. I remember the Biggie bashing. And the general purpose ‘if it seems popular, I’m out without even listening’ stuff. I remember some people being obsessed with sales one way or the other instead of being mostly into ‘turn the shit on, listen to it. If you like it, listen again. If you don’t and you don’t feel like giving it another shot, cool. But hush about it. Don’t spend more time griping than you spend jamming! Why do that!?’.

And we wonder why lots of kids are broken up, indifferent, and/or sad as a default setting.

People should accept people prefer certain eras for certain genres (jazz - usually the 60's for example)

Are you talking about DJ Premier, whose discography extends from 1989* to 2021 (only because 2022 just started today), when you say “these dudes”? You look at that time span and get…six years? Maybe you should listen to a track he produced ten years into his career called Mathematics.

*I think he had production credits in 88 too but don’t feel like hitting a search engine

It is nas prerogative to work with whoever he pleases, no shit. I’m saying he has bad taste. 3 albums with the same dude is a boring choice to me.

Also dj premier has been quoted saying that he’d be down to work with nas whenever over the years

>dude is a boring choice to me.

Working with the same producer 3x in a row (or more !) isn't a problem if the beats and songs bang consistently.

These dudes are 1 for 3. KD was mostly a snooze. KDII had a few great joints. Magic is a yawnfest.

It's really that simple, in my eyes.

The beats are boring was what I was referring to when I said he has bad taste. It can be argued that even if the beats *were* consistently dope, it might start to get repetitive at 3 albums in a row. Or maybe not

My take...not even about that. If he doesn't want to work with Primo anymore, cool. Just think there are so many more producers that could lace him with more creative, next type soundscapes, that is if he wanted to push the envelope more. He seems to want to stay in a comfort zone with what I would say is super average production. Admittedly, yes, the second LP with Nas doper than that first one. Still would like to see Nas take it somewhere more experimental, like when he connected with the Marley cat...these are chat boards yall, people gonna comment on their favorite artists and what they think they should be doing...

anytime somebody rhyme on one, they gotta let you know it's a Preem beat or they gotta reference GangStarr to justify rapping over it.

DJ Premier still has it, IMO. For example “Nothing Less” that he did for Conway - I think Nas would sound great on that.

Problem is the numerous fans who would automatically say any new Nas/Primo doesn’t compare to what they did in the 90s.

The thing that is somehow getting missed here is Nas said he would make a whole album with Primo years ago. Fans didn’t make him say that. He said that. Appeared on a magazine cover with Primo and everything, if memory serves. If Nas made an album with Primo, I’d listen to it and very likely enjoy it, based on their prior work together and their recent output. I’d also think “Nas finally finished the project he said he would”

Truth...and as I have listened to this EP, the more hollow/boring the beats are, but indeed Nas is spittin...I mean, listen again to this, then listen to that Magic ish...Not close...

Album is dope

Nas is comfortable

Not as good as KD2 but it’s not supposed to be

Really not sure what the complaint is

Hitboy isn’t my favorite producer but he is doing a damn good job of bridging the gap and bringing an MC like Nas who has been in the game for 30 years into 20/21

Truth be told; if Nas did an album with Preem, same dudes in this post would be in a post about that album complaining about some other shit

I'm with ya, always be happy when Nas drops something new. I just gave each song a listen on YouTube last night before bed and seemed pretty dope to me. The Wu for the children song only one I sorta hated first listen, one of his experiments not for me.

Preemo ain't the same dude from Wrath Of The Math and MOT. His beats haven't been white hot for a long time so sadly that ship has sailed. If they had made an album in the 90s it would of been GOAT status tho..

I just don’t get the hate.

I feel like people don’t even know what they’re looking for.

It’s like just enjoy the music man.

Are people really that miserable they just go in looking for shit to hate?

Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like I’ve definitely done that before.

I’m just kinda past that.

If I like it cool, if not I move on.

The difference is, now I’m not looking for made up album in my head that I think it should be.

Beats on this joint are dope to me. I wish Hitboy had a bit more groove and soul to his shit but it’s not like those two things are completely lacking.

Nobody with Lauryn from KD2 is a great record!

Can’t even imagine people complaining about some of this shit.

Just feels like the complaints are more so based off the names involved than the actual music.

And most importantly, Nas is rapping his ass off. Best MC of all-time period.

Who else is 30 years in putting out albums like this?

Black Thought is the only one keeping pace but he still has never released a full solo LP.

*shrug*

One Of The Best Yet and the Prhyme joints had heat.

It's not like he's washed up but 90s Primo was a mf and Nas was in top form. See: NY State Of Mind Pt 2

I don’t think Preem is washed and I would love to still get an album out of the two of them.

My reply originally was just saying that people are going to complain either way.

Think about it… Nas has been in a lose-lose situation since Illmatic.

Stillmatic would’ve caught heat if he wasn’t the underdog in the battle.

Preem can still deliver for sure.

However, I feel like I’ve learned with Nas, he needs to be in a zone to write and complete something.

Hopefully he gets in that Preem zone one time.

I always said let’s just knock out the Preem and AZ albums in one shot and get an entire Nas and AZ album produced by Preem.

And to be clear, I'm not even necessarily on the "why don't we have a Nas and Preem album !!" team. Of course I'd love it if it happened, but that's not something I'm fixated on like some people may be.

Was only making the point that OK Damn was underplaying Preem's 2000s work significantly, although to his credit he did amend his point. So we're all on the same page here.

And my lukewarm feelings about Hitboy aside, I do want to say out loud that Nas is SPITTING on this album. All over it. "The Truth" is a standout in that regard (and happens to be Hitboy's best beat on this one IMO).

Plus he's still been dropping sick shit all the while since then. Our Streets with ASAP Ferg is a great track and it's from 2017.

Also, did people not like the RTJ track? Or the 2 Chainz track? Or the stuff he's done with the Griselda boys?

I've been lurking on okapis since I was a teenager in '06, and a lot of the folks on this board bitch and moan about the same shit, and it's 15 ------- FIFTEEN -------- years later.

Like any other great producer (or great artist for that matter) he's gone thru some minor peaks and valleys but OK damn initially made it sound like one of the GOAT contenders hasn't made good beats since like 1993 lol. Again, he amended his comments so I'm not trying to beat him up about it. But yea Preem is still creating fire beats to this day. I mean Gangstarr just came out like a year or two ago ?

This partnership isn’t going away anytime soon.

And there’s nothing wrong with it. These albums are good. Nas didn’t put anything out between 2012-2018. I’m glad we’re getting these albums now. This one might be my favorite one off first listen. This is really, really good.

Nas is dropping alot of dope stuff lately. I'm all for his collaborations with Hit-Boy. I'm a pretty big fan of Nas though I really only see him as having 3-4 real missteps in his whole career and about an equal amount of classics (illmatic counts 2wice).

none of them are really all that great in my opinion, but it's good to get something from Nas after getting nothing from him since Life is Good, and I'm sure after KD3 I'll be able to put together a nice album-length playlist of my favorite tracks from his collabs with HB.

I am feeling this album more than I was expecting. Great beat selection. I even like the WU for the Children, even if it doesn't have drums.

I identify as drum dependent. But that joint bangs on the big speakers!!!

Gonna have to relisten to Kings Disease 1 and 2.

I'm confused what they are even looking for. "The Truth" could just as easily be a great modern day Pete Rock/9th Wonder beat, "Ugly" chops sounds like they could be on any of the best drumless underground projects people hype, "Speechless" could just as easily be on It Was Written, "Wu For The Children" could easily be Kanye...

But Hitboy's beats, by and large, just don't have any oomph to them or staying power with me. I've long said this but there's *something* missing. Often the drums lol.

But even his songs/beats with drums are lacking some life IMO

I agree that his beats do have a certain empty feeling to them. I can’t quite place it either.

Either, I just think it’s working for Nas.

Reason why Kanye doesn’t work for Nas is because he over-produces and leaves no place for the star of the show.

Hitboy doesn’t have that problem.

And I think that's why this one has grown on me. Cuz at the end of the day the beats are listenable and as you mentioned, I listen to Nas for Nas' lyrics primarily, not for the beats he rhymes over. So as long as the beats aren't abhorrent the songs are always worth listening to. And Nas is on fire on this album lyrically, no question.

But in the bigger picture it's just that, to me, you can accomplish both. And a legend and all-time great like Nas deserves the best in the business.

But as you and others have said, as long as we're getting Nas rhymes I'm happy, gripes w/Hitboy's beats aside.

Second listen didn’t hit me as hard, but I will revisit it later to see how it ages.

I think Nas is trying a few different flows on there. Content is pretty strong. Musical variety is on point. Could use some segues to make it more cohesive, but overall I’ve liked all three Nas/Hit Boy projects

This is really amazing to me. Reminds me of first time listening to Lost Tapes actually, kind of released the same way. This is kind of what I've been looking for from Nas the past 15 years, no singing on hooks, just straight rapping. His hooks are dope, the verses are dope, flow is dope. I dig the beats too, glad hitboy didn't put his little signature on any songs here either.

I think the "why not Primo" folks are missing that Hitboys achievement is finding a way, a process, that has gotten Nas to drop 3 albums that are B- at worst, in less than a year.

Don't know how he did it but its not like you could have just swapped in Premo and gotten the same productivity. Nas knows Premo. They've made tracks together. But there is clearly something Hitboy is doing and done (that Primo didn't do (or want to do) that has gotten assembly line level of very good work out of Nas. Part of a producer's talent is coaxing work out of an artist and Hitboy has proven that he is next level when it comes to that apsect of producing. The productivity is the achievement.
