to do anything in particular ... but just that they spoke to me because I've always been the type of person who lives by these kind of lessons. And I have recommended this song to countless people over the years because of said lessons within it. From my favorite hiphop song (and maybe song in general) ever, Reflection Eternal - 2000 Seasons:
"I'm not tellin you again, so relay it to your crew You gotta actually do Forget the drive-in, drive-by and drive-thru You've got-ta get out the car Humble yourself, tilt your head back, and look at the stars"
This line, from the second I first heard it, always just spoke to me. It reminds me to appreciate the simple things in life, keep myself in check, and never take myself, or life, too seriously. Always take some time to appreciate the natural beauty the world offers me, and I'll be straight.
Really this entire song speaks to me, which is why it's my favorite song ever...but here's another line that sticks out (among many great ones):
"No excuses, see life's dilemas are set up like a mirror Just to show you all your faces, now your understanding is clearer"
Just a great great great great line. Reminds me to use life issues and problems as stepping stones/learning opportunities rather than letting them bring me to a dark place.
I literally could never say enough positive things about this track. It's so inspiring ... and the beat is so understated yet hard at the same damn time (that piano, HiTek...god dayum). Meanwhile, Kweli offers life lessons and social commentary throughout, while still taking some time to take aim at MCs that's "soft like Play-Doh"; the former never sounding preachy, the latter never sounding forced. Just an amazing piece of music. ----------------------------------------
