"Talking cars on a Friday "
My ac went out. Then my check coolant warning came on a day later.
These mfrs want over $5000 to replace my AC Compressor and to replace my water pump.
its a 2011 VW CC. Damn Germans make some fun vehicles to drive but they are way too expensive to maintain. I did peak at an entry level Benz SUV but its kinda small.
5 racks tho? Not gonna be able to do it!!!!
So it looks like I’m finally gonna have a car payment again.
Looking at an SUV this time around since the kids are getting older, bigger and said my ride was old af and small as shit.
Might be fucking with these Koreans again. The Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride. Also test drove the Sorento and about to test drive the Santa Fe that tries to look like a Land Rover.
I did test drive the Mazda CX90 plug in and while it was ok.. the drivers seat has no leg room and I aint even a big dude. Also heard it has a shit ton of electrical problems.
Obviously not worried about the badge on the car. More worried about cost, maintenance cost and reliability.
what yall pushin these days? I’m looking at 2023’s and up.

Reliable as in no major problems at all if you stay on top of basic maintenance. Around 100k you gotta get belts replaced in the engine, wihch is some semi-major work. Cooling system is another fail point after a lot of miles.
Not the "flyest" cars out there, and definitely not the biggest interior (though not small... I'm a really tall dude and can fit reasonably well), but a civic or accord will give you a lot of no-worry miles.
My wife has a 2014 civic at 80k with a lot of life left in it.

I've never had a Honda, but I drove a 1994 Toyota Camry to like 200k miles, and I'm pretty sure the guy who bought it from me got another 50k out of it.
I've since had a 2003 Nissan Maxima (sold it with around 150k), 2009 Acura Tsx (120k), 2012 Infiniti G37x (100k), and 2015 Infiniti Q50 (currently at 101k). Have driven them all to over 100k and have had very, very few maintenance issues.
I know people like you who are married to Hondas, and they say the same thing you did - very reliable, but not fancy. Nothing wrong with that.
Had a Mitsubishi Outlander that I got brand new and drove to 140-150,000 or so with very few issues - until the catalytic converter rusted out. But that’s the shit they put on the roads up here, not the car.
Then the Accord was great, and the 4Runner has been great.

4. "I feel you. My wife wants something bigger for her next car as well" In response to Reply # 3
Well, not really a bigger car, but something with more power. She's on the highway everyday and wants a car with more "go." Volvo is her first choice, and she wants me to investigate which models are the good ones. Acuras and an Accord are also on her list.
My pop had a Volvo some years back and it was a good car, but someone ran into it while it was parked in front of his house and totaled it.

I had zero mechanical issues, but the wheels were getting rusted which led to poor seals and flat tires. Mechanics would grind the rust off which helped, but it came back and I got sick of dealing with it. That was the only issue I ever had with it though.
5. "Still looking for a work truck or work van" In response to Reply # 0 Fri Mar-27-26 11:56 AM by flipnile
I just want a basic-ass truck with a long bed and (maybe) extended cab. Not one of these luxury SUVs in a pickup truck body. Something that can fit plywood & drywall sheets, as well as haul bricks, bags of sand, concrete, lumber, etc.
Would make the lowes/hd runs when working on my house a lot easier.
Thinking about looking for something down south (NC down) since they might not use road salt and the truck won't be rusted to shit like they are up here. I don't drive to work, so it'll be strictly for hauling stuff.
6. "I’ve got a 4Runner with 69,000" In response to Reply # 0
and I’m hoping to drive it another 10 years. Got it with 38,000 a few years ago and love it. They’re known to routinely go 200,000-300,000 miles. The key will be keeping the rust off underneath, which is difficult in the northeast.
9. "You can coat the underside with oil" In response to Reply # 6
Before winter, people do that with pickups trucks to keep the salt from rusting the bottom. Literally take a paint brush, some cheap motor oil and paint the whole underside, wheel wells, bottom of doors, etc. There's oil specifically made for this, so it doesn't have to be environmentally-unfriendly (like using motor oil).
I do this on my motorcycle if I'm going to ride on salted roads in the winter.
12. "Yeah, I got it coated the first year I had it" In response to Reply # 9
Didn’t get it done before the last 2 winters though - hopefully it lasts more than 1 year. I gotta make sure I stay on top of it going forward, it’s 5 years old now. Rust often seems to start in the coming years.
10. "definitely do your research on kia/hyundai." In response to Reply # 0
I've heard of engine failures and warranties not being honored.
all the brands are hella pricey to fix now. it hasn't helped that there are fewer mechanical parts. the electrical gremlins can be a pain.
my 2016 grand cherokee keeps me rolling. 186k. not many big issues. I was worried not long ago that it might be done. damn electrical issues. my mechanic got it figured out and we been good since. cost me a grand, but other than regular maintenance, that's the only real issue I've had. got it in 2018.

added more coolant so it stopped beeping but I do believe there is a leak. This isn’t the first time its been low.
My AC is working again too.
Which means I get to be more patient in my decision.

15. "5 months left on my EV6 lease" In response to Reply # 0
Although I did have one issue with the 12v battery being low I haven't been hit with the ICCU issue. If it weren't for that I would recommend it with zero hesitation. Not specifically in your situation since it isn't large.
I would like an EV9 but definitely not paying new prices on it.
Unsure what I'm going to go with once my lease is up. I don't want to go back to ICE. I don't want to give up some of the interior features and I don't want to pay much more than I am now. Seems like there will be many more options by next year but can't wait.
