"Would you pay for your kids college if you made big money? "
There is a clip from Married to Medicine floating around.
The kid just graduated college and is an entitled POS. He wants a new car because the jeep is “boring” and when she asked him about Law School and how he will pay for it he says “white kids parents who are rich like us pay for it and the kids have no debt and become millionaires”
She snapped on him. Apparently he has a credit card and spent 60 muhhfukkin THOUSAND on random shit in one year.
She also paid for their condo and comes over and cleans for them like a maid.
While he is an entitled POS I’m playing devil’s advocate on this one. How the hell you let this kid swipe 60K with no consequences or cut off? Pay for everything and then pull the plug?
I mean.. she did pay for the first 4 years and he needs to learn but maybe teach responsibility and financial skills a bit earlier.
For the record, we plan to pay as much as we can but we are going to let them know college without scholarships will more than likely leave them on the hook for some debt. Also dont even think about some expensive ass private school that isn’t giving you a ton of money.

I got my education largely debt free (Athletic scholarship) boy did have a smaller nut really save my bacon from time to time. I would love to do that for my children, if they aren't able to make use of our genetic gifts as well as I did.
2. "my ppls paid for my undergrad education because they didnt want me to" In response to Reply # 0
have a mountain of debt right outta college. at the time i didnt really understand what a gift that was because i didnt really ask my friends alot of questions about that kinda stuff but later came to realize that i was in the minority with that. i got student loans for grad school which im still paying on.
My sons mom and i paid for as much of his schooling as we could outta pocket but couldnt foot the whole bill so what we couldnt cover he got loans for...hes still ahead of the game tho to some degree.
when he was younger his mom and i would constantly butt heads because of how we approached spending on him...im more conservative with money and she would give the nigga whatever he wanted for the most part which i would protest against...he began to think that money grew on trees and had no concept of money management.
eventually she realized that she was doing him more harm than good and came more over to my side but by then he was college age and the damage was done smh.

As long as I could afford to do so. I'm trying to get my kid in a good place in life, not make life harder on them or try to teach them some weird "lesson."
Just guessing, but two semesters of law school (one year) is probably less than or around $60k, so that family sounds like they have some financial literacy/planning issues going on.

100%. The lesson shouldn't be that you have to incur massive debt because "that's the real world," the lesson is to set your child(ren) up for success to the best of your ability and encourage them to work to *change* the real world.
5. "doing it now. sort of." In response to Reply # 0
my daughter has the HOPE scholarship and I pay the rest from he 529 plan. she goes to a state school so we can afford it so far.
so yes, I'd pay for sure if my money was long like that. it would mean I I was able to put a ton of funds into a 529. if my good fortune would mean an easier life for them, no reason not to do it.
what I won't do is go into debt by getting loans for mine to attend college. I know parents doing that for their kids. nope!

to be able to provide any kids i have the ability to enter into adulthood debt free with the world as their oyster. otherwise what are you doing it for.
Now, I wouldn't give my kid a credit card without serious limits on it, lol. I'd also almost certainly make my kid help pay for his first car-- my dad told me he'd cover half a used car if I raised the money for the other half. It was a good lesson, made me *really* care about that car. Lasted me a full decade.
But leaving those wild parts of that anecdote out, yes, of course I'm planning on paying for my son's education to the best of my ability-- so if I made big money, it'd go without saying.

9. "Exactly. We started a 529 early. Still won’t prolly have enough" In response to Reply # 8
since both will be in college for 3 out of their 4 years.
Also plan on them having a CC for emergencies with a reasonable limit.
Right now they have robux and I just started giving them $10 a month which is 1000 robux. Trying to teach them how to budget and stretch that out. They only get computers on weekends unless its for school assignments.
First month my daughter asked for more robux dollars like 30 minutes after she got it. We got some work to do.. lol.

13. "No, I’d create a scholarship/grant fund" In response to Reply # 0
If I had it like that THAT(Bezos money), they’d be guaranteed to get it and would have to apply like everyone else. Plus I think it would grant me a bigger tax write-off.
In truth, I’m nowhere near Bezos money, so no. My first kid got a full ride through the UNCF and fucked it up by his early jr yr.
I’ve been prepping the second kid to get a band & academic scholarship to an HBCU. He’s seen his big brother’s flaws and has more of plan and more than that knows I refuse to get loans.
I’d rather buy property and put it in a trust in their name than fork it over to an institution for a kid who feels like a doctor or lawyer one semester and a social influencer the next.

if you give them a trust, land, etc
The chances of a hard headed kid fucking up the money is high.

but will have 2 in college for 5 years minimum.
I’m scared of the cost but have been saving since birth.
Hopefully we can pay for it all.

Leaving him debt-free as he gets his aerospace engineering degree from Case Western in Cleveland. My 1st child finished in 2024 debt-free. It gives a sense of satisfaction to my wife and I knowing we're getting them out there with a leg up of no debt.
