"Are we still not listening to certain artist because they're "canceled"?"
Tue Dec-02-25 04:36 PM by Buddy_Gilapagos

Anybody who was a Chris Brown fan once*, continue to not listen to him because of his troubled past with women?

Were folks who once stepped in the name of love*, still clear the dance floor when an R Kelly song comes on at the BBQ? Have you heard Kelly at a BBQ lately?

I mean Tory Lanez canceled himself but do folks have an issue listening to his music these days

Wait was any other musician ever actually "cancelled"?

but I’m also not making playlist with Chris Brown on it.

Same with anyone else who is supposedly canceled.

If a Biggie song comes on with Puff on it I’m not going to be that person demanding folks stop dancing or to change the song.

8. "Kanye ?"

>Wait was any other musician ever actually "cancelled"?

In some circles, MJ. Not me.

But Kanye I avoid for the most part. Which sucks cuz his music was such a big part of the early part of my adult life, and I love so much of it. But I have a visceral reaction everytime I hear his voice these days, so I turn him off if he comes up on shuffle on my master playlist or anything like that.

I never really sought out Kells or Chris Brown like that so I don't necessarily need to actively "avoid" their music. And if someone else puts them on, I don't complain.

here's the full quote that often gets misinterpreted:

But what’s worse than that is the slaves who identified with their masters, as if the slaves’ value as human beings depended on what the masters were like. What they were like was evil! They were called “masters” because they owned human beings! And we slaves were ready to fight each other over which of the lowdown filthy dogs who owned us was the best! But it wasn’t the slaves’ fault. Like Douglass wrote, slaves are like other people. When you think about it, it’s a wonder more black folks didn’t fight with one another instead of fighting against the white man the way Denmark Vesey, Nat Turner, David Walker, and a whole lot of others did. While you’re busy shaking your head thinking they were stupid, ask yourself this: are we any better today? Black people put on the uniform of the U.S. military, our masters, and go to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and anywhere else Uncle Sam tells us to go, and fight and kill yellow-skinned folks and brown-skinned folks on behalf of the United States, our masters—just like slaves fighting other slaves. Meanwhile, back home, one out of every half-dozen blacks is locked up for committing the same drug crimes as white dudes who walk around free. What’s wrong with that picture? Then you’ve got blacks in police uniforms out there arresting other innocent blacks. Blacks in America really need to study the Jews in Germany. Those Jews never thought they were part of Hitler’s system, most of them never sided with the people oppressing them. We do. We go to war. What kind of abomination is that? How many blacks go to war because we can’t find a job, and are willing to kill or be killed just so we can feed ourselves and our families? But remember, our already-free Maroon ancestors risked all of that just to free others. Getting back to Frederick Douglass, it’s like he said: Slaves are like other people. Too many of us have that slave mentality. It can take a lot to get past that, but a lot of us have, and Frederick Douglass was one.

I think he is paraphrasing and actually talking about once slavery ended how some Black folk were still up white folks ass

but that is not anywhere near the same thing as “slavery was a choice” in the way Kanye said it.

The TMZ interview should have been the end, but I really cut all his albums out of my life during the later Trump sucking/phony presidential run. I remember trying to write an anniversary feature about Late Registration, but being too pissed off to finish a paragraph.

Removed everything from my iPod/iPhone. Yes, I still download music to my iPod/iPhone because I don't fox with streaming. Don't really miss it really. Occasionally feel the desire to listen to a random song, but there's so much music out there, old and new, that I can listen to and be happy.

Pretty much same here re: "missing" it. I don't think about it often. But there are times when I do get sort of sad that I have to turn off a particular song (recently, "We Don't Care" comes to mind) but it's more because I feel grief over the loss of the person he used to be (or used to pretend to be), than it is because I'm dying to hear his music.

I mean I've hated Kanye for a long time now (more recently, I feel sad for him as we wait for the tragic end), but the music has never stopped being a bop for me.

The primary reason for my enjoyment of his music has always been the production, so I could overlook the things I found annoying about his voice and lyrics. So once he went off the deep end, the visceral disgust I feel everytime I hear his voice almost came naturally.

I do miss a lot of his beats, but I get my fix of his old production from the beats he did for other artists, without having to hear his stupid MAGA voice.

he made good songs but it was mostly based on his production. his rhymes are average and he has always been corny. also, imo he hasn't made good music in years so that makes it easier not to listen to him,

I have enjoyed Kanye albums during my life. I have a lot of fun memories surrounding listening to "Graduation" when my wife and I were still in the dating phase of our relationship.

Maybe it's because I was already extracting myself from the Kanye train by 808s and Heartbreaks (only album I bought after that was MBDTF) and really off the bandwago by TLOP.OR because I listen to A LOT of music all the damn time. But as much as I like those early albums, I don't ever feel the need to check for them again. Yeah, sure every once and a while I might, "Eh, I could listen to Bound 2 right now?", but then I realize I have literally thousands of other albums at my disposal, many of which I like more than Kanye's best.

I mean, I don't here his music as much out there, because I'm old and washed and rarely "outside" to any great degree anymore, but when I do hear it, I roll my eyes and don't really check for it. And, honestly, I do get annoyed when artists I respect still, after everything that's happened, collaborate with the guy.

And even that album I found pretentious early on. I had to come around on it.

808s was insufferable, so I started peeling off of Kanye around that time, too.

I am trying to figure out if people still like the music but are taking a moral stance against listening to them or if they actually no longer like the music because of who he is.

Sounds like you are saying you like those early albums but are choosing not to listen to them because of his behavior.

Pretty much it. I look it like I look at Mel Gibson: I'm a huge fan of his Mad Max films, Year of Living Dangerously, Gallipoli, the first two Lethal Weapons, Payback, and even Chicken Run. But I just can't fuck with those films anymore because of what he fully revealed himself as.

I'd known he was an obnoxious Republican for years, and I lived with it because sometimes Republicans make good movies (I'd be less giving towards Republicans/Trump supporters now). But once he outed himself as a racist and antisemite? Nope.

He may have been a complete nut even back then, but he was funny and IMO largely likable IMO, as his heart often seemed to be in the right place. I think he meant well.

It’s hard to listen to that old stuff now, knowing the shit he’s pulled the last however many years. I’m not listening to anybody that supports Trump. That’s just what it is. I don’t think he means well anymore.

In response to Reply # 0

I recall someone saying Bill Withers beat his wife. Marvin Gaye beat Nona’s mom not to mention statutory rape twice and James Brown was known for 2pieceing men and women. Prince was quite the underage groomer and then there’s MJ who although was found not guilty, still left a lot of questions/concerns.

I know they’re all gone but it seems a bit off to hold the living to more cancellation standards while still bumping grooving etc to past known and possible predators. If really taken that stance. How far do we go with it and for how long?

Meaning, it's not only about how far back we go, but what all do we apply this to? Many companies mistreated our ancestors. Stores we shop at are mistreating our communities. If folks really cared about punishing and cancelling people, they wouldn't be shopping at Walmart, buying Dole pineapples, and so many other things. None of this serious.

Maybe he saw this post or had the same thought and he brought up Kellz on twitter and this is one of the folks responding to him. So this popped up in my timeline.

The For You tab on twitter is mostly vile racist trolling but the Following Tab of people you curate is still more interesting than BlueSky or Threads to me.

And sometimes, some topics are better to discuss here than on Twitter (well, that used to be the case, I guess).

What I meant to include as a footnote was “Canceling” only means something when you actually used to engage with someone or something, and then choose to stop because of their actions.

People love to “cancel” or boycott things that were never a meaningful part of their lives anyway. But when it comes to music, people, or anything they genuinely cherish, they suddenly find all sorts of mental gymnastics to ingnore.

But I've never seen anyone have a selective aversion to R. Kelly.

They are not canceling songs; they are canceling the whole discography.

There is no obvious reasons to not enjoy a stone cold jam.

Every party I have at some point in the night, when enough liquor has flowed, I put on the R Kelly set and everyone is dancing and singing along..until I pull the camera out and folks and everyone wants to get respectable.

I grew up sneaking taboo songs like Darling Nicki and stuff by NWA and I lived long enough where we have young people scolding us about listening to the new taboo of the old music of R Kelly.

But they listening to music with these lyrics:

"… All my hoes do shrooms, nigga, all my hoes do coke
20-carat ring, I put my fingers down her throat (uh, uh, uh)
If I lose a carat, she might choke (uh, uh, uh)
I know she gon' swallow, she a GOAT (uh, uh, uh)"

Make it make sense!?!?

we can dance to I beat that bitch with a bat because the artists was never accused or videotaped assaulting women.

BUT if the nigga was actually on tape beating bitches with bats and being an abuser then nah.. the song no longer slaps (ugh).

the fact that we now know most of those songs were prolly inspired by freaking youngins makes it hard to argue against folks not wanting to be linked to those jams even tho they are some good songs

We loved these songs BEFORE the video dropped so its harder for people not to go into old school mode when the song comes on.

When diddy got exposed I realized I was singing songs with him in the background and totally forgot because it was Biggie or Total or Faith or Mary playing. Music is a gotdamn drug.

97. "Again. How is liking a song defending the person who wrote the song?"

You all haven't answered that basic question.

You run down his list of evidence he sucks but I never said he didn't suck and is not a pedofile. I said his songs still bang.

Is liking the Movie Chinatown defending Roman Polanski?

Harvey Winstein is responsible for making a shit ton of good movies, does acknowledging that amount to defending Harvey Winstein?

You can stop listening to anyone you want to. You can not like a song for any reason. That's everyone's right.

My point is that there is nothing obvious about the idea that, because we discover an artist is a terrible person, it makes sense for people to stop listening to their music.

This is an entirely new phenomenon. It started in the last few years and the weirdier part about it is that it seems to only apply to one or two people (who just so happen to be black men).

Again, going back to my original question.

Who else has been canceled like Kells?

I think we all got caught up in this weird, arbitrary moral panic that we will probably look back on one day and say, yeah that was strange.

And we should know that it was a moment in time phenomenon because it's years after knowing R Kelly was doing these things before we he was canceled. Dave Chappelle made jokes that we all laughed about before he was canceled. Did you all stop listening to R Kelly when the allegations and the tape first surfaced?

In response to Reply # 97

but there IS a reason.

same as that if people stopped watching Harvey’s movies or Polanski’s movies.

Not sure why you don’t understand this.

I’m not saying you have to stop listening but if others stop or don’t want to be filmed singing Kellz jams you know the reason why.

Acting like that reason is absurd/wrong is weird.

Which is weird because my exact words are right here on this page.

I said there is no OBVIOUS reasons...

I now you got me repeating myself because I've also already said

"You can stop listening to anyone you want to. You can not like a song for any reason. That's everyone's right."

My point which again, I've already said, is this is a brand new thing. Like I said:

"This is an entirely new phenomenon. It started in the last few years and the weirdier part about it is that it seems to only apply to one or two people (who just so happen to be black men)."

Yall love to be posting for the sake of posting and talking in circles so I am not going back and forth with yall because you all are ducking and dodging my basic questions. I'm off this until yall can answer:

1. Who else music has been canceled like Kells?

2. Did you all stop listening to R Kelly when the allegations and the tape first surfaced?

3. How is liking a song defending the person who wrote the song?

when the obvious reason is this man was on tape peeing on a 13 year old and finally got cthe convicted years later with a long list of victims?

I mean.. really?

misquoting you for not adding obvious like you don’t know what the obvious reason is..

and for the record (pun intended) clearly he isn’t cancelled because you OBVIOUSLY still listen to him and posted a tweet of a woman saying people in Jersey still listen to him.

talk about posting to post. smh

it would make it more complicated liking the movie

I rewatched The Professional last year. i hadn't seen it in forever. I still enjoyed it but it gets creepyish, and i didn't realize until after that Beson had a 16yr old wife when he made this who he had met when she was 12 (portman's age in the movie)

it's gonna be hard to watch that movie again

99. "owner of Charlotte’s most popular brewery charged with statutory rape"
In response to Reply # 0

he broke into a house and was caught by the parents in a 13 year olds bed and somehow wasn’t killed. They found him naked in his car.

The wife issued a statement saying he is no longer vested in the company and its been terrible for her family “and others”

Sycamore Brewery is the name and its being pulled from shelves everywhere.

This story just happened a few days ago and some folks are like “but the wife didn’t know, what about her family and the workers at the brewery”

but anyone asking people to support them for the workers is getting all types of heat. One dude even said “can we wait until the trial?”

meanwhile, folks are posting some of their cans and the winter can has sex toys in the pattern of a snowflake.

There’s breweries everywhere down there, and they’re all pretty similar from what I remember.

They can find work at the other 500 breweries in CLT

Not sure if its true but someone said his wife designs the artwork for the beers so she aint innocent or blindsided by this.

Also rumors that women (or girls) have l forwarded text exchanges to her so she knew he was a POS.

You'll type a lot of words but not answer that basic question.

No one is advocating doing business or financially supporting a predator.

He sold millions of records. Obviously tons of people thought these were good songs. But now that we know his inspiration for these songs we aint fucking with them anymore

its not about thinking the song is great. History shows we loved a lot of his songs.

But now that we know he is a predator those songs don’t hit like they used to
