Havent read anyone calling it trash but have seen some folks post that Wayne would’ve done better and considering its his hometown and the number of Nawlins acts he wouldve brought out, they right. But it was still entertaining, although not as good as his award show performances.

you expect Kendrick and SZA to surpass Dre, Snoop, Eminem, 50, Kendrick etc? K dot’s breath control aint relevant in this type of show.

I thought it was cool and enjoyed the visuals and showmanship but I didn't love the song selection (bro has a deeper catalog so was surprised he played so many recent songs).

It was intended for a narrower younger than usual for SuperBowl audiences and if you aren't really invested in the beef than I can seeing wanting for the days of big broad appeal acts with Anthems everyone knows like MJJ, Prince, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, etc.

that is a weird way to look at it.

last year the kids didn’t enjoy Snoop and them because that was for the parents of the kids..

this year was for the youth and the Black folk who love Blackness

And I responded with what's troubling about my mother (who is black but also 80) didn't enjoy the show?

Meaning, there will be black people who don't enjoy the show (namely older people or people not invested in the beef) and it's not that serious.

Like you pointed out, it's not for every body (including all black people).

The real winner here is Jay-Z and the NFL because the NFL had a problem with Kap and the game being politicized and they hired Jay-Z to solve the problem.

Jay-Z took a lot of heat initially for it and yet just a few years later the act of his choosing has completely erased the idea that the NFL should be boycotted and in fact performing at the Suerbowl is now a revolutionary act.

I don't feel strongly about that argument but I am a bit surprised no one is talking about the relationship between KAP, NFL, Jay-Z and Kendrick.

Its kinda spook that sat by the door-ish except the nfl was in need of a life line and JayZ hooked it up to apparently work in our favor. Never would anyone like Kendrick been offered such a platform as super bowl halftime show. Matter of fact the same could be said for Dre and Snoop. Has any rapper performed the halftime show prior to them?

On another note I heard a guest on Rickey Smiley morning show say ‘it was an honor they (NFL) let her (Ledisi) perform the Black national anthem. But isnt Jay over all of the musical acts for the super bowl? Also I’m certain Ledisi was reached out to and made an offer to grace the super bowl w/her presence and not begging or hoping to. It felt like the guest was trying to belittle her and Black folks w/that statement.

i thought the performance was INCREDIBLE. so many themes (well addressed on Dissect if you're in the dark). i can't even believe he got that off at the fucking Super Bowl.

now, i think the energy felt off because for the average Super Bowl TV watcher or attendee, most of that shit is gonna go over their head, or worse, if they knew what the messages were they'd feel attacked or not wanna hear that shit. the energy went up when he played the songs they knew.

that shit was medicine hidden in the candy.

the best part about it was the NLU teases through out but for the most part it was kinda flat until SZA showed up.

it wasn't the right performance for that stage. that was an award show performance not a super bowl performance.

Should preface by saying I’ve already bought my (rather pricey) tickets to the Summer stadium tour. And I was at the Mr.Morale tour, I love the guy and the Super Bowl wasn’t going to change that.

BUT

that’s a really confusing setlist and approach to take on that stage. Not a ton of set pieces, one costume, pretty straightforward supporting choreography. No “Money Trees”, “Bitch Don’t Kill my Vibe”, “King Kunta”, “Alright” (who cares you played it 3 years ago no one remembers play it again you’re in an NFL Stadium)???

My life is a video game, but also America is one big gang war…uh ok dude I guess…are you gonna do “Maad City” though? It felt like he was shooting a live music video to double as a preview of the tour, not striving for a great halftime show.

I can’t believe I’m saying this and I thought the opinion was asinine at the time…but Lil Wayne may actually have been better. You would’ve at least gotten “A Milli”, “Got Money”, “Lollipop” , and “Back That Azz Up” right? All stadium-sturdy anthems, and sprinkle in a few popular guest verses. Which would’ve sucked probably but at least have felt more fun in the moment.

Well the whole point of the halftime show is to flex crossover appeal

So I guess we will see how Kdot not doing hits impacts Jay Z’s credibility

Dre had Snoop, 50, Em…. Usher had Alicia, Luda …. Shakira / Jlo performed with Bad bunny

So yeah … Kdot with just SZA makes no sense to me…

I admit, I half expected Loyalty with Rihanna just because it would be another way to troll Drake.

But other than that, I didn't have any expectations because its fucking Kendrick. I wouldn't have been surprised had he just done Not Like Us 4 times or all unreleased material. I had no idea what to expect.

"he didn't do my favorite songs!!!" is a take for sure.

It goes Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Super Bowl

And he went out and did album cuts from his most recent album. When he has JOINTS too.

I enjoyed it enough, but it’s not the milestone moment it could’ve been. There’s no 4D chess move by Kendrick here. He could’ve made history and opted out.

i feel like all these people irritated/mad about the halftime don't understand Kendrick at all, even after a decade plus of music. i hope i'm wrong.

also, i know A LOT people didn't see or weren't paying attention, but the interviews with Ebro and Nadeska AND the one w/ Timothy Chalamet told you exactly what time Kendrick was on for halftime...ya know, as they happened due to his obligation of partnering with Apple for the halftime.

i hate it here sometimes.

Like you and Legs said, that isn't how Kendrick has EVER moved. We're talking about a guy who followed up a successful and critically acclaimed debut with the most left-field mainstream rap album since Outkast.

Then followed that up with his most pop album.

The after a long hiatus, released a double album that is essentially one long therapy session.

He's never been one to just give people what they expect. I thought to myself as it started "of COURSE this motherfucker is going to open with an unreleased song"

Not sure how you can be a Kendrick fan and be bummed/surprised that he didn't play Bitch Don't Kill my Vibe in 2025. Other than complaints about the sound quality/mix, I had only seen/heard nothing but praise until I checked Okayplayer. Weird.

Also, its ironic that most people complaining about the setlist seemed to have missed a pretty big theme of the show.

Even if someone didn't like it, he absolutely made history. In a few ways.

He's like anyone else that I occasionally may like to listen to, but isn't someone whose music I absolutely must own or check for upon immediate release. I wouldn't call his SB performance trash. It was just an ok performance for me.

I like that he injects his performances with so much symbolism but I’m tired of having to decipher everything.

I remember asking my dad once if he wanted to see some fancy art-house movie with me. He said “Nah, when I go to the movies, I just want to see some shit explode “

I was kind of embarrassed by what he said but I started to understand as I got older and busier. With the pressure of work and family, he just wanted to enjoy something visceral and escapist. He thought all day, he didn’t want to have to think too hard on his free time lol

That’s where I’m at with Kendrick right now. I appreciate the thought he puts into everything but I’m tired of having to watch all the think pieces to get it all.

white girl I went to HS with copied and pasted a long ass post that basically shit on Maga and and white people for not understanding the half time show. The post even pointed out how Maga was upset at not seeing diversity although they swear they don’t see color. It ended with an appreciation for Black art even if they struggle to understand it because they lack the history and education in hip hop to get the message.

and somehow another friend of mine who is a Black woman said she was upset by the post and completely missed the message.

and in trying to point this out I just gave up because I remembered she was dumb af.

that performance lived exactly in the present moment it was performed in

i'm willing to bet the plan was different when he was first announced

but alas, the performance happened in the midst of an unfolding racist fascist coup, with the dictator present.

He did and said what needed to be done and said in that moment. I'm proud of him for taking the risk

one of the greatest privileges successful artists have is being able to speak truth directly to power. He laid it all on the line and did exactly that.

He didn't lay it all on the line. He performed a show that was vetted and approved by the powers that be. If anything, the guy who ran out with the Palestinian Flag was the actual protest (not saying that I thought that was a good idea).

It's Black Mirror Fifteen Million Merits to a tee.

I dug it. Thought it was cool and enjoyed the visuals and even the layers of the performance. Agree we haven't seen anything like it at the Superbowl.

But it was not revolutionary. As cool as it was, it was corporate entertainment halftime by it's very definition.

It's not Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising Black fists at the Olympics. It's not Kap taking a knee.

It's a win for the NFL that they (1) put to bed the Boycott talk, (2) got Trump to show up (which apparently required taking down the "End Racism" lettering from end zone and (3) got Black people celebrating a cultural win from the half-time by enlisting the most credible name in pop Black culture. The NFL walked the tightrope of making eveyone happy and could not ask for more.

I know I sound like a hater and I was happy to just enjoy the show as a cool little piece of cultural entertainment. However, when my kids told me they were studying the show in their history class I also had to talk to them about capitalism ability to co-opt resistence movements. It's cool to enjoy but it's also important to recognize what's going on.

I think I'd still describe it as "revolutionary" personally considering the stage, but Buddy's right that it was a censored and filtered revolutionary act. Though, I'd surmise that some of the symbolism just went over the heads of NFL execs who were checking to make sure nothing went "too far" (in their shitty capitalist eyes).

But again, I think Buddy raised some important points to consider.

protest isn't as Black and white as its made out to be in that post.

Kendrick wasn't going to unplug and do a silent 20 minute sit in.

Have we ever seen a halftime show like this? No
Have we ever had a halftime show with an emcee berating the artist in a fucking Uncle Sam outfit?
Do we not want to discuss the performer who had a Gaza Sudan protest that got them banned for life?

To me it was a protest performance because it was Black AF, he didn't do all his old hits, he didn't have the marching band or 5 guest artist and he had the social commentary of white america berating him the whole time.

The boycott talk? C'mon.. that ended for the majority of us years ago. We are talking about the performance not if he should've performed or not.

which implies there could be some hate in his post.

and since its Buddy I KNOW there is some hate in his post.

The whole “back the Olympics” is where I smell some hate. Those guys participated in the Olympics just like Kendrick performed at the SB. They competed, won and represented our country.. and then they made white folks mad.

He is implying that Kendrick is still part of capitalism so its not a true protest or revolutionary performance.

Did he make white America mad? Fuck yeah.. Did we see a Gaza, Sudan protest in the background on stage by a performer? Fuck yeah..

We are talking about the performance.. not if he should’ve performed or not.

and he also said everyone was happy. Has he not seen the reactions by white people? This wasn’t an All American half time show. White people are asking why their wasn’t more diversity and why all the dancers were Black. White America HATED that performance which is why folks are calling it revolutionary and a protest performance.

Geanted, white folk are always mad but they are big mad at seeing all that Blackness and a performance with a message.

Sure. The people who are always mad are mad. The trolls had a lot to munch on.

Yeah not everyone loved it but I think it's a stretch to say White America hated that half time. You must not have seen all the videos I've seen of white kids singing along to the show.

The thing this halftime show most reminds me of when Childish Gambino dropped "This is America". Then there were tons of people dissecting the deeper meaning but also tons of white kids doing tik toks to it.

We know what a halftime show sparking outrage looks like with titty-gate, and the response to this show looks nothing like that. Do you at all think any of the negativity seen online actually negatively impacts Kendrick? Did he lose endorsements? Deals? Will he be canceled?

I don't think so. I think this enhances his reputation and will ultimately put more dollars in his pocket.

I think yall throw around the term revolutionary too lightly because if it is revolutionary, what is the revolutionary impact? What does it actually change?

As much as we loved This is America when it dropped I don't think we can call it revoltionary because it didn't actually change anything. It was ultimaely only consumed as entertianment content.

I think its a weird place when saying I like it but don't think it's revolutionary is seen as hating but oh well.

Kendrick used the moment, his gifts, the opportunity and the spectacle to create a revolutionary act of his own making

it being approved don't make it less revolutionary, imo.

at the end of the day, we're both still talking about it and analyzing it days later, which again, speaks to the power of his artistic expression.

on John Carlos..there were many Black activists at that time who also DON'T believe his raised fist was that revolutionary ...cuz he participated in the games...he attended the ceremony...etc etc

everybody's revolutionary act ain't for everybody.

Helping the NFL get views is not a protest, nor its a revolutionary act

Kanye’s 30 second rant on the Katrina fundraiser is more revolutionary than that entire halftime show…

Artists having messages in their performances aint nothing unique…. J Lo and Shakira did the imagery of immigrant children in cages during their performance. There was no narrative of them being revolutionaries lol…

just because people didn’t react doesn’t mean it wasn’t a “revolutionary act”

and yes Kanye going rogue was awesome but you don’t have to go off script to have an impact

I think folks liked the show because he did more than just “entertain” us

but I also know how you view this stuff so I’m not surprised by your post.

Opposing team’s warmup mix tonight was mostly Kendrick. Money Trees, MAAD City, Humble, Squabble Up were all on it.

I felt good that those kids are into him. Surely they saw the halftime show.

Blows my mind that some old people would’ve rather had Lil Wayne doing some party songs that they liked when they were 20, but to each his own I guess.

Some artists I understand why they have Stans. Pac, Eminem, DMX, Wu-Tang, Kendrick, Nas….

but Drake? I can see why many find his music likable, but he’s really not all that compelling of a personality or artist. IMO. He makes pleasant sounding shit you throw on and half listen to while you’re doing other things. But you gonna sit down and really listen, and watch his interviews, and buy his merch, and all that? I just don’t get it. There’s little substance there. He’s boring and basic at best, and corny as fuck at worst.

all head bop-able

what is he missing?

i told a young dude thats heavily into 90 conscious hip hop, right now he is seeing a real world example, in real time, of why conscious hip hop didnt last.

yeah, we say we want it, but we dont.

years later we’ll look back on kendrick and swear europeans were holding him back

dont be obtuse

i specifically stated:
“ i told a young dude thats heavily into 90 conscious hip hop, right now he is seeing a real world example, in real time, of why conscious hip hop didnt last.”

^^context

so when i follow that up with:
“ years later we’ll look back on kendrick and swear europeans were holding him back”

meaning, we like to believe the fall of conscious hip hop was due to some secret board meeting of yt people that decided our music was too political and in turn pushed more destructive forms of hip hop to take its place.

when in reality we dont like conscious hip hop and messages in our music no where near as much as we claim to, the TRASH comments prove it, our actions prove it.

so….YEARS LATER, if a question of asking WHY kendrick didnt reach whatever level, or WHY kendricks career didnt last HOWEVER long. history tells us the answer FROM US, will be the europeans

You can't draw conclusions based on a few replies from a dead message board.

You cant hide behind "context and nuance" when you just followed that up with

"so….YEARS LATER, if a question of asking WHY kendrick didnt reach whatever level, or WHY kendricks career didnt last HOWEVER long. history tells us the answer FROM US, will be the europeans"

That goes directly to the question asked

if Kendrick is not held back now, nobody would ask why Kendrick didn't reach whatever level...etc years later.

Do you understand ?

and won 5 grammys and a pulitzer

dude is winning in spite of some folks not liking rap that makes you think

he’s just incredibly gifted at making music and knows how to write some catchy ass hooks while rapping about some incredibly deep shit.

if anything, folks will look back and wonder why the fuck mumble rap was so huge and why Drake ruled the airwaves when rappers like Kendrick, Cole, etc were able to blow up making conscious rap.

so.. trying to once again blame Black folk for holding Kendrick back doesn’t make any sense because he’s the most popular rapper in the word right now

So 90 conscious hip hop didn't last because we say we want it, but we don't" and that had more to do with it, then anything the European's did to stop it.

Would've accepted a country music show to be honest.

Smithfield, Sugarland, Luke Bryan, and a few others could've worked for this show.

Normal, basic, mainstream people DGAF about real hip hop or messages in the music. Though that was well known since the 90s. Dude should've just did a bunch of songs that go hard in the club (does he have any of those?)

I didn't watch... Went to fix a plate for myself at halftime.

Some of these folks are devout Drake fans.
Some of these folks are, "I want to be entertained & not preached to" TV watchers.
Some are just not into Kendrick at all.

NONE of that is troubling. Everything isn't for everybody. My wife and I enjoyed it and watched it a few more times via Youtube trying to find things we may have missed.

In asking what they thought of the super bowl and halftime show, majority were geeked to talk about it. A couple said they didnt watch at all and a few didnt feel much way about it. The fact that Philly stands out as a Black football team w/ a Black quarter back was not missed by some. There was no ‘trash’ talk or confusión made about Kdots performance, although I dont know if they got the symbolism throughout the show but one kid called it the SuperBlackBowl.

As someone mentioned above, online responses can be echo chambers for attention for a number of grown ass adults. Also like to add that a number of people will never like Kdot or his kind because they hold a mirror to them to question themselves.

Mos Def refused to acknowledge him as hip hop and he got dissed

But when Kdot delivers the same message..everyone yells They Not Like Us… I am guessing now everyone agrees with Mos Def lol

his moves worked in Kendrick's favor for this battle tho lol.

Ye made some moves that were similar when he 'used' certain artists to make his way. doesn't make him not hip hop.

post malone fits more in the vulture category.

I won't pretend to know limp bizkits catalog, but rapping alone isn't what makes something hip hop. they are listed as nu metal, whatever tf that is.

kesha rapped on a few of her hits. nobody labeled her as hip hop. that would be like calling beyonce a country artist.

but he wasn’t in a rap beef with Drake so no one danced to his Target music answer

Drake is a rapper who has pop appeal

I would suggest listening to Drake’s new project and asking yourself if that is hip hop.

Shit was ass juice with maybe 2 songs where he is actually rapping and 20 songs of singing badly in autotune

This was Entertainment

He paid the NFL 15 million to rock out in some hiphuggers.

Having a bunch of black folk dancing for millions of white folk ain't revolutionary lol

Having to place fake asz "easter eggs" in a performance and leave it up to social media content creators to come up with different interpretations for clicks ain't revolutionary

If anything it watered down and did nothing but romanticize the concept of a REAL revolution
