the winds were so severe last night that they couldn't do aerial water drops. embers flew everywhere and burned down entire neighborhoods the winds have died down quite a bit but Palisades and Altadena are still zero containment and are devastated.

Hollywood hills caught fire tonight. Fortunately they were able to airdrop the shit out of it before it hit too many structures, because feel like if it happened last night, the entire city would have burned down.

Im couple miles from current evac zones, have some friends just outside, and ready to go. same with my job being just outside

Lotta people without power.

theres a Rogan clip going around referencing a retired firefighter talking about this, and i remember another video of a firefighter saying the same thing. It pretty much described exactly what happened. The right combination of wind and dry conditions and it's a wrap. Its January and we havent had any actual rain since, Spring. That's why containment of that Hollywood fire last night was so important. I think if it had happened the night before with the winds being what they were, it's over.

I'm up the coast a bit, but you look at the map and see that all of these fires are on the outskirts of heavily forested areas and have the potential for so much damage. Weather forecast looking dire too... not a lot of immediate relief in sight.

Glendale is maybe 15 miles from the edge of the Eaton (Altadena, Arcadia) fire.

On Tuesday night, my sister - in one of her brightest moments - prompted me to pack a bag for the next few days. So, we spent an hour packing clothes and mementos.

Then, at about 6:45 there was an evacuation warning (not an alert) for our area. So, we left a half hour later and headed southwest to Inglewood. We found a hotel, thankfully, and set up camp there.

We're safe, as is the rest of my family out here.

Harrowing story about my brother and his family.

They recently bought a home in the Pasadena/Altadena area, which was in the direct path of the fire. As the map of the fire was being updated, my brother and sister-in-law were growing increasingly worrisome about the fate of their home.

In the middle of the afternoon, they received a notice from their neighbor that their home was safe, but he warned them they should go and douse their home with water to protect it from embers.

So, they dropped off their kids at relatives and booked it over across the city as they were staying with my sister-in-law's parents in Hawthorne -- about an hour southwest from their home.

They return to the area that is best described as a war zone. Streets that were once lined with ranch and adobe-style homes with yards and garages and nice cars were left with brick frames and chimneys and nothing else but ash.

In fact, on their street the homes on both sides and behind their home were lost. By some not so minor miracle, the only damage to their home was to their garage-office. Thankfully, a fire truck was nearby and put out the fire after they called 911.

The fireperson said because of the way the fire was moving, their home would likely stand.

My brother and wife will head by today to pick up some things and double check the house is still standing.

My sister and I were talking about how devastating losing the home would be, not only for my brother and sister-in-law, but also their two kids. It would have been so traumatic for their young minds and hearts (niece - 11 - nephew - 6).

That one is hitting the Northeastern (?) parts of Pasadena, which really isn't that far away. He said winds are heavy now, but are expected to die down by sunset, so he's cautiously optimistic for now.

Have a friend who lives in Brentwood who's literally blocks away from the evac zone for the Pallisades fire. That particular line hasn't moved for a few days. But he has his go bag packed just in case. Another friend who lives near Santa Monica evacuated, but I think that was out of an abundance of caution on his part.

Shit is crazy.

Didn’t have to evacuate, thankfully. But it’s fucking awful. And the air outside is beyond terrible - everywhere.

While fires have always been a SoCal thing, the winds were unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Completely insane.

It’s devastating but this is going to change a LOT.

Like some here, I'm a LA native, and we've had fires, but this is something else. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law's school, which they teach in Palisades, burned down. My mother-in-law had to evacuate from Santa Monica.

I've got a few friends who lost their homes in Altadena; there are a few of us like Minority and Justin Scott, and Russell who are close to the fires.

Last I heard, the Pallisades Fire was 8% contained. MY brother texted me today that the Easton fire is 3% contained and they've rescinded the evac order in Glenndale. I know those are a long way from 100%, but after a hellacious week, it's steps in the right direction. Hopefully the wind doesn't get out of control again.

But nothing like the level we saw this week. Regular Santa Anas, which is still considered "fire" weather so still kinda scary.

But the next couple days they should be able to finally stamp out what's remaining.

for being a narcistic NYC dweller, but seeing all this unfold in the dead of winter seems so bizarre to me.

I'm used to hearing about California wildfires occurring during the summer; seeing this all unfold during early January makes this feel somehow worse.

I only hope the crazy winds that made this so much worse don't occur 6 or so months from now.

Early last year we had some heavy rain, the year before we even had snow in parts of LA.. but we've had something like a quarter inch of rain since last May. Things are extreeemely dry and burn easy, mix it with unprecedented winds and it's a catastrophic recipe, because the winds made attacking the fire from the air impossible, and that's really the only way to get a handle on them once they blow up

For San Diego is 6 inches, we have gotten one tenth of one inch of rain so far.

Everything it’s really dry out there and the wind just makes it dryer.

Climate Scientist Peter Kalmus Fled L.A. Fearing Wildfires. His Old Neighborhood Is Now a Hellscape (Democracy Now!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMYvuY_MLMQ

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/opinion/la-fires-los-angeles-wildfires.html

As a Climate Scientist, I Knew It Was Time to Leave Los Angeles: Guest Essay

Kalmus, Peter.  New York Times (Online) New York Times Company. Jan 10, 2025.

I am utterly devastated by the Los Angeles wildfires, shaking with rage and grief. The Altadena community near Pasadena, where the Eaton fire has damaged or destroyed at least 5,000 structures, was my home for 14 years.

I moved my family away two years ago because, as California’s climate kept growing drier, hotter and more fiery, I feared that our neighborhood would burn. But even I didn’t think fires of this scale and severity would raze it and other large areas of the city this soon. And yet images of Altadena this week show a hellscape, like a landscape out of Octavia Butler’s uncannily prescient climate novel “Parable of the Sower.”

One lesson climate change teaches us again and again is that bad things can happen ahead of schedule. Model predictions for climate impacts have tended to be optimistically biased. But now, unfortunately, the heating is accelerating, outpacing scientists’ expectations.

We must face the fact that no one is coming to save us, especially in disaster-prone places such as Los Angeles, where the risk of catastrophic wildfire has been clear for years. And so many of us face a real choice — to stay or to leave. I chose to leave.

Often called L.A.’s “best kept secret,” Altadena is a quirky hamlet nestled in the foothills, hidden from all the city’s traffic snarls, where everyone seemed to know everyone. I arrived with my family in 2008 to start a post-doctorate degree in astrophysics. It felt like we’d landed in paradise: unlimited guacamole from a huge avocado tree in our backyard; flocks of green parrots squawking overhead; Caltech’s perfect lawns in Pasadena to lie on with my children, even in January.

I started worrying about climate change as a graduate student in 2006. My concerns grew stronger as the planet grew hotter. In 2012, unable to look away, I switched my career from gravitational waves to climate science, taking a job at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. I also started keeping chickens and bees (like so many of my neighbors), volunteering with local climate groups and bicycling around town to give climate talks.

But the climate crisis kept worsening, year after year. I wanted to scream from the rooftops for people to see global heating as the urgent threat that it is. I wrote articles and tweets with salty language and co-founded nonprofits for a climate app and a climate media group.

Then, in September 2020, I experienced heat exhaustion for the first time during an intense heat wave. The next day the Bobcat fire, a megafire, ignited a few miles from our neighborhood high in the Altadena foothills. In Los Angeles, neighborhoods near mountains and wild areas are in greater danger from wildfire. We prepared to evacuate, but, unlike the fires raging now, the blaze was mostly contained to wilderness areas. Still, for weeks, my family and I were enveloped in a cloud of smoke. My lungs burned and my fingers had a constant tingle.

After the Bobcat fire, Los Angeles no longer felt safe. I feared for the health of my family, and I wondered how we would evacuate if the neighborhood started to burn. In 2022, my wife was offered a job in Durham, N.C., and we moved.

I’ve been watching this week’s tragedy unfold from afar, piecing the story together through local news reports and texts and videos from friends, some of whom have lost homes, trying to figure out what has burned and what hasn’t. Our dog’s pet hospital, gone. The church where our boys’ string recitals took place, gone. The weird Bunny Museum I’d wonder about on my bicycle, waiting for the light to change; the friendly hardware store I went to a hundred times; the coffee shop where I’d meet friends and climate activists; all gone.

My former neighbor texted me Thursday to say that our little cul-de-sac burned, his house and ours and all our neighbors’ homes except for one. The beautiful house we raised our children in, gone; and my tears finally came.

No place is truly safe anymore. A few months ago, Hurricane Helene pummeled the western part of my new state and the city of Asheville, which many once considered a climate haven. The Pacific Northwest seemed safe until the 2021 heat dome. Hawaii seemed safe until the deadly fires on Maui in 2023.

For those who have lost everything in climate disasters, the apocalypse has already arrived. And as the planet gets hotter, climate disasters will get more frequent and more intense. The cost of these fires will be immense, and they will affect the insurance industry and the housing market.

How bad things get depends on how long we let the fossil fuel industry continue to call the shots. The oil, gas and coal corporations have known for half a century that they were causing irreversible climate chaos, and their executives, lobbyists and lawyers chose to spread disinformation and block the transition to cleaner energy. In 2021, testifying in front of Congress, several C.E.O.s refused to end efforts to block climate action or take responsibility for their disinformation. They use their wealth to control our politicians.

We need to build bridges to people on all sides of the political spectrum who are waking up as climate chaos worsens, despite the gross falsehoods from many Republican leaders.

Nothing will change until our anger gets powerful enough. But once you accept the truth of loss, and the truth of who perpetrated and profited from that loss, the anger comes rushing in, as fierce as the Santa Ana winds.

Peter Kalmus is a climate scientist in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the author of “Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution.”

Karen Bass was in Ghana while her city while the fires raged on. Residents are upset and I wouldnt be shocked if California faced another exodus.

17 million of a 800 million something budget, doesn't seem like a huge chunk but if anything the budget should be growing, not shrinking.

Its a trip watching the press conferences because the last couple days were kinda kumbaya, but now the fire chief is like fuck this. She's flat out saying the city failed the fire department. I mean fire hydrants in Palisades ran out of fucking water.

I think Newsom is a scumfuck, but Mayor Bass seems like a legit good person, but her being in Ghana was already a terrible look. There's gonna be a lot of heads rolling.

That said, the focus should be the now and making sure we're ready for the wind next week. There will be plenty of time for the blame game once the (literal) smoke clears

he managed to work that in when talking about this. Not to mention how much money he has sent to Israel and Ukraine.

And even if you fully support that, where is the urgency for climate?

Oh and the official democrat twitter account tweeted that there should be a climate emergency, as if they are unaware of who is in charge right now and has been for 4 fucking years.

https://x.com/TheDemocrats/status/1877452315059192299

Just add that and the cut funding, etc to the pile of evidence that democrats are completely full of shit and out of touch with how they look to actual real people. Not consultants or donors or blue maga with half a dozen flags in their bio.

Like, real people.

>if so, bad look

Yes. Bad fucking look.

>
>fires in Cali ain't knew but I guess the timing is fucking
>with people?

Uhh...you mean the timing of the cut funding? Yeah and that it was given to the LAPD. And that climate scientists have been warning about this scenario for fucking years.

But LAPD needs $$ to help the governor toss through homeless camps.

>
>Not sure why people keep bringing up winter like Southern Cali
>gets 4 seasons

They still would usually get rain man lol. No one is saying they should have had a white christmas, but some rain would have helped. And/or less wind.

Biden had 4 fucking years to declare a climate emergency. Newsome could have planned for what scientists have been screaming about. And Bass didn't have to cave to pressure to cut funding to the fucking fire department to give even more money to PD.

The "good guys" aint fucking shit.

What happened is when the city passed the original budget they were negotiating the salaries with the firefighters union so they didn't include that money in the budget. Once the contracts with the union had been finalized later on in the year, that money was taken from a general fund and added to the overall budget. Overall the budget was *increased* by $50 million.

The thing that made me get more interested in this is the first number I heard the budget was decreased by was $17 million, and it seemed weird to me that people were getting upset given that the fire department's budget was still over $800 million. When I started looking into it, it was pretty obvious to me that this was a right wing smear job and unsurprisingly the media ran with it.

Over and over again we see the tail wagging the dog and our country is actively letting bad faith players manipulate us into believing lies. At this point with Trump being back in office this is going to be the norm.

I don’t give a shit about Karen Bass or Newsom. But the urge to BLAME and be right given misinformation, it being too early to know the story, etc. is infuriating.

I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve never seen winds like that. It’s been ages since it rained. That’s a tinderbox waiting to happen. And I’m not sure how that part is the governments fault.

Its a huge event that most people are watching from afar, and given that every little thing is political and culture war fodder, this has a little of everything, trump, newsom, climate change, "dem cities", 'dei' blah blah blah.

Even for the noise that's coming from within, with people this scared, devastated, and riled up, it's so much easier and even assuring on some level to be able to point to someone's fuck up than something that's completely out of human control

I mean i hear you, I'm shook, and anxious as fuck with the winds kicking up again and all I want is to get through these next few days without more devastation and dispair, so heartened by how badass these first responders have been as well as help sent from other places, and people in communities coming together to help.

blame game can wait a few days

I'm not saying Madlib is rich. He might be. He might be pretty cash strapped. Who knows. But unlike health insurance, he's got to have home insurance. And he was in Altadena, not Malibu/Palisades where fire coverage had recently been cancelled.

Not to take away from this, because it's tragic - especially the loss of vinyl collections, etc. I'd IMAGINE most, if not all, of his music was backed up somehow, but even then - a GoFundMe is pretty tone deaf.
