Towards the end of the year, I slowed down significantly on my podcast listening. That left more time for music. Normally, I feel like I'm nearly 100 percent in touch w/ everything dropping in the rap and R&B realm, but seeing a lot of year end lists, I realized how much good music from other genres I missed. Fortunately, I had that extra time to go and "catch up" on a lot of it. That said, my 2025 is two-fold: first, I want to make sure I'm peeping a more diverse array of new releases each week, and second, (this is almost always a goal but now I have more time) I want to discover more "classic albums" that are not rap or R&B from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

As far as this week goes?

Lil Baby - I REALLY like this and I'm not a Lil Baby fan, just a person who likes some of his songs here and there. None of his albums have ever grabbed me. That said, there's some irony to me that a non-fan like me might like this cuz it seems like his usualy fanbase is not really enjoying it at all.

Boldy James & Rich Gains - No deep thoughts cuz he's another one I'm not a super fan of, I'm more of a casual fan, but from memory? This MIGHT be my favority Bodly project (again being that I'm not a die hard listener).

Death Row Records comp - there was a few cool joints that were like, 70s/80s R&B influenced, but not much else on there for me.

I fux w/ him, and this did not hit my algorithm.

This is one of his better projects front to back.

If you've never heard Le$, think of it like this: he's the Curren$y of Houston, at least sonically.

i meant to say, speaking to my goal, i TRIED to find some good non rap/R&B but nothing grabbed me as far as what i like.

The reddit one is probably the most complete but even then sometimes he misses some

like this one is better than the last few but that's like comparing a 6/10 to a bunch of 3/10 projects

wow, i did not expect this to be reggae. i assumed it was just indie rap. this is fantastic.

Otis Kane - Violet

This is a random indie R&B album that hit my Spotify algorithm. i'm glad it did. For lack of a better word, it's really good R&B for adults. It sort of touches all traditional R&B notes, with hints of neo-soul, chicago stepping, etc. sprinkles within. He's not the ILLEST vocalist ever but he carries it for sure, and the songs and production are quite good for being indie.

I'm a big Nef fan, so it was good to hear him. A couple of songs on this EP are just OK, but I really like most of it.

otherwise, it's PRETTY bare.

this is "sexy drill" which is a sound i really like.

I thought it was quite good. Didn't know what to expect as I'm completely ignorant to his catalog. If you want rapping, he's not, which I know he did less and less as he got further into his career.

The other album I really liked from today was the album from OMB Peezy. some street shit but the beats are solid and he can rap.

I'm a big fan of UK rap, and a fan of Cee. This album is really good. Great bars, great beats. Only "flaw" is that Cee (and most UK rappers to be fair) really just have that one flow.

Whirr - Raw Blue

easily the best album of 2025 so far. one of the most beautiful rock albums (shoegaze) i've heard.

I'm not sure Boldy can make anything outright BAD, but i didn't like this as much as Hidden In Plain Sight and Murder During Drug Traffic, the two projects he dropped before this (that Murder During Drug Traffic just came out 3 weeks ago...dude is prolific if nothing else, LOL).

i already went thru that Weeknd album once i thought it was VERY GOOD i just wish people would stop putting out albums that are 20 tracks or more. if he had shaved off 4 to 6 tracks it might be perfect.
