"C'mon, Everyone's Doing It!: The Best Music of 2024"
Mon Dec-16-24 10:55 AM by PROMO

It's that time of year - time to make definitive statements about subjective art.

As music nerd, I'd love to hear from y'all about what you thought the best music of 2024 was. Not only to hear from people who agree with me (let's be real, that's that main reason people do it, right?) but also because I wanna hopefully hear about some projects I missed and need to go listen to.

Could be albums, Could be a single song. You can throw up one mention or make a whole list. You can go in depth or keep it "It's a banger!" surface level.

All genres are welcome.

I'll be back with mine.

Despite how much I love her. I was surprised she ended up in my Spotify #1 this year above Kendrick. I think if they actually closed it in December - Kenny would’ve retaken over.

But yea usually I don’t give a shit about awards, but I’d actually love to see her clean up. Seems like with how big she’s gotten she may end up at some of the Kendrick and Sza tour stops. I worry about her getting too commercially successful- but ultimately I trust her and her team to continue to put out dope shit- and I’d love more and more people to get on the wagon.

My top 5 was
Doechii
kendrick
Tyler
Killer Mike
Blxst

I was surprised Blxst ended that high

which is standard for TDE.

This weekend I randomly watched a long interview she did with Rolling Stone in the studio w/ her engineer talking about creating Alligator Bites Dont Heal, and it gave me the strong opinion that she'd never "sell out" for commercial success. It's on YouTube if you wanna peep.

I need to listen to that new Blxst album again. I was SO SO SO HIGH on Blxst when he first came out, but since then he's kind of not met my expectations, and off two listens I didn't really vibe w/ it. I always try to go back a few times with artists I do like though because sometimes it could just be MY mood at the time I listen.

This song and album are coutrouple coutropple platinum on my devices. I run back the first part of Where I Go 2 or 3 times like a super annoying DJ too. And you better believe I listen to the intro song before it too!

I have the video saved in my YT too. So it ain't no way I'm gonna be in a situation where I have my phone but can't listen to this song! Hehe.

is dope, too.

Come Home is fire, but the JOINT for me is Carpinteria (f. Freddie Gibbs). Those ARE my two favorite songs on there though.

she had only heard random songs or snippets on social media (she's more of a r&b/pop person than rap) and she loved it.

as i said to her, it's not his "best album" in the artistic sense, but it's his most listenable by far if you ask me. so many earworms throughout.

edit: happy to see Com/Pete getting love (makes some sense from us old heads here, lol). it's not in my Top 10, but it's definitely one of the best rap projects to drop this year, and it was refreshing that some old dudes made something really good.

I think this is the song that's going to stick with me the most from this year. Yeah Not Like Us was the biggest song but this one just hits so much for me.

Not really a big Vince fan either but this album was great and I can't get enough of this song.

My favorite of the others has got to be the Mk.Gee album. That kid is majorly talented, and I'm expecting big things from him in the future.

i'm on my 2nd listen.

not a fan of the first track. everything after I fux with, but I really love the beautiful, slower tracks like "I Want" and "Breakthespell."

i get why people have this very high. if i had found it sooner i'd have it high too, but now i just need to listen and digest more.

Armand Hammer: We Buy Diabetic Test Strips (I return to this one a lot and like it more each time)

Kurio Kumachi: Open Today (Insane Japanese busker with super dynamic songs)
https://kumiokurachi.bandcamp.com/album/open-today

Nia Archives: Silence is Loud (Jungle RnB hybrid, in a very accessible smooth package)

Dos Monos: Dos Atmos (Japanese hip hop band shows how rap/hard rock can actually be done well)
https://dosmonos.bandcamp.com/album/dos-atomos

Milkweek: Folklore 1979-2 (some brief pagan beat tape trip hop stuff)
https://milkweedfolk.bandcamp.com/album/folklore-1979-2

Dzumelec: Chvostoskoky (Sorry, I like some really weird stuff. This is some kitchen sink folk hip hop unclassifiable stuff)
https://dzumelec.bandcamp.com/album/chvostoskoky

Moin: You Never End (Post hardcore meets electronic. Sucker for this sound, even though it’s pretty basic)
https://m-o-i-n.bandcamp.com/album/you-never-end

7X3=21& M. Pines: The Yet Untitled Album (My pipe dream was always for Autechre to do the production for a rap album. This sounds close to that)

Serengeti: KDIV (If you know to always check for Kenny Dennis, then you know)

R.A.P. Ferreira & Fumitake Tamura: The First to Make Contact (If you like the more minimal moments of We Buy Diabetic Test Strips, try this)

Supernatural: Natural Disasters (This is actually a 90s album that was reissued, or maybe issued for the first time? For fans of that abstract Stress Extincition Agenda type 90s rap. Listen to this a lot)

Michael Audience: Video Store Rental (A really solid indie rap album that seemed to REALLY fly under the radar)

https://michaelaudience.bandcamp.com/album/video-store-rental

----
I check for: Serengeti, Zeroh, Open Mike Eagle, Jeremiah Jae, Moka Only.

Kev is the homie; known him for over a quarter century now. So happy that he's putting out music now. And at a very impressive clip.

I actually haven't heard this album, but I really like the album he just released with AugustFanon.

Love the big chunky beats he seems to favor. They go well juxtaposed with his conversational unaffected rhyme style. Did you like that Supernatural album? Usually these lost albums are just okay but I thought that one was unusually good

The pure black metal:
Cascadian Tactics - Iron Firmament
Hrima - Nahtrunar*** the Nahtrunar is honestly top list of all time contention

The prog / death - really big with fans of multiple genres and the artsy crowd
Absolute Elsewhere - Blood Incanctation

black & electronic
Muuntautuja - Oranssi Pazuzu

Doomgaze
Liminal - Leaving
Sunne - Renewer

For thrash, the Oxygen Destroyer / Guardian of the Universe is top of the list for a lot of folks

I REALLY liked the Oxygen Destroyer album, especially the concept which I thought was dope and super nerdy for a thrash metal band.

I also really liked both of the Doomgaze albums you recommended.

Another one I loved that I'm not even sure is metal because I feel like metal is the hardest genre to classify especially with all the even harder to classify genres, is the Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To album.

Also really liked Kerry King's album (I've been perusing year end best of lists and checking shit out). I was telling a friend since he "sang backup" for Slayer I never really knew what he sounded like, so I didn't expect his album, to me, to sound like Zack De La Rocha over Slayer instrumentals, but that's what I got from it (also similar themes to Rage on there) and I like it.

I did not like the Blood Incantation album. I'm not sure if prog metal is my thing.

Also wasn't really digging the Nahtrunar project. If you say it's that good then I perhaps have a skewed version of what "black metal" is - very possible.

Really like this album, might not be one for this board but I can play this straight thru and it's a vibe, Robert Smith surprised me with this one.
