"Climate Changing"

The destruction in Western NC is heartbreaking. Still haven’t heard from an old coworker who lives in Black Mountain. We love visiting the area so this hurts.

Wife and I rented a cabin by the river in Marshall to unplug and recharge and it was one of the best vacations we ever had. We walked the town of Marshall, shopped and talked to local business owners who were artsy fartsies.

We went to Hot Springs and rented a hot tub and sipped wine and blew trees.

and both those towns are gone.

this story is terrible.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/30/us/hurricane-helene-marshall-north-carolina-floods.html

an EMT sent my coworker a text saying they pulled 180 bodies from a trailer park
in Hot Springs. Its unofficial but expect the death toll to climb much higher in the next few days.

Capitalism is a massive failure. At the very least, it has reached the limits of its usefulness in terms of advancing society sustainably in ways that matter. Not only on account of climate change in general (the reason no one wants to make any effort to fix climate change is because corporations exist for profit and that's all they care about, and addressing climate change will impact their bottom lines) but in this case specifically (cops, who ostensibly should be "serving and protecting" by being out helping to rescue people and saving lives, are instead standing in front of grocery stores preventing people and their children from getting the food, supplies, and shelter they so desperately need).

It's all so fucking bleak.

capitalism and a sustainable planet can't co-exist
it's impossible to have infinite growth on a finite planet.

any significant shift towards a more sustainable planet is a direct threat to the status quo and business interests.

every day this summer, activists and scientists were protesting and blocking the lobby of the Citi Bank HQ for being one of the largest financiers of fossil fuels...only to be met with massive riot cops, arrests and beatdowns....and virtually no media coverage.

police are doing exactly what's in their job description, they are serving and protecting......property and capital.

But I'd have to think that many, maybe even most, dumb pieces of shit have soft spots for kids and desperate people in general. I just cannot fathom standing and blocking the doors of a grocery store when babies are crying uncontrollably right in your face, while their parents tell you they can't find food anywhere.

Imagine being that type of person. It's a fucking emergency. Fuck that store. Give every single ounce of food out to anyone who needs it.

I hate this place.

they never were.

a supreme court case confirmed that police have no obligation to protect or help people...as they've shown us time and time again. someone's heart could be in the right place, but if they are in uniform, they are following orders and protocol.

https://prospect.org/justice/police-have-no-duty-to-protect-the-public/

that's why I take issue with the idea of police reform. The foundation of the police in the US has been to protect property and investments. protecting individuals is not part of the job the description.

how can you reform something that is working exactly as it's intended?

it would be like trying to reform my fridge to bake cookies.

heartbreaking.

sure would be a good time for Biden to declare a climate emergency, making it possible to release funds for emergency relief and funding for infrastructure...US is able to materialize billions almost instantly when it comes to wars and genocides...war machine has the auto-pay function turned on.

entire towns and cities are decimated and people missing and now we're somehow strapped for cash and resources?

sadly, more profits to be made in destruction...so that's where the money goes.

just like the cartoon posted above....war stocks are booming at the moment.

Running a mid aughts neocon campaign bragging about everything from oil, fracking, the toughest border laws in history, the most lethal military in the world, and taking out Iran.

Oh and Dick Cheney cosigns.

And then wondering why the election is so close.

Read something today that, for the last few decades democrats are essentially Republicans from 8-12 years prior.

Capitalism is king, not only of this country but the world since we overthrew any government trying to enact something different. So dems are happier to capitulate to ultra-capitalists (and as a result, nazis/white supremacists, bigots, etc.) on the right than they are to actually help The People by moving earnestly to the left. Which, as you (and I, and others) often point out, would actually turn out voters and ensure that this country never voted repug ever again. And which would allow us to actually collectively solve some over the ever-growing existential problems we face.

Sad state of affairs. Very bleak.

You can win local elections or even state elections being ultra liberal but I doubt you can win a general election that way.

Its America.

The fact that this many people are okay with Trump winning by voting for him or not voting lets me know that moving further left won’t guarantee wins

The Dems can’t really run on a true climate change policy because the majority of people who vote do not support such policies.

like when it would rain yeah the city might have 2-3 inches of standing water. but i saw overhead footage of like 12+" of water. the mountains arent built for that.

and they got it light compared to the cities southwest of Boone. Asheville and all of that around there is an absolute wreck.

a hurricane hitting that far inland and so severely is something we never thought could happen to where nobody ever considered how ill-equipped the area is for that.

I’ve been to Asheville quite a few times over the years. Hard to fathom that level of destruction in a place I was just at not too long ago.

Really horrifying stuff for those people.

this isn't about donations of food not being used.

Helicopters are dropping supplies because they can't land choppers.

there is no reason to tell folks not to donate goods.

Money AND canned food, water, soap, socks etc.. all that shit is needed.

Not trying to be rude but I know people trapped on mountains and stuck in Black Mountain.

These people need everything right now.

she is blocked from her house due to a mudslide but fortunate to stay at a friends house.

Just had a shower for the first time in a week.

Black mountain is cut off but she is working on getting folks to fill out loans apps for small businesses who lost everything.

Another friend from college is fortunate to be at the top of a mountain so no flood damage. She said the morgues are about to overflow with bodies. Hearing rumors that some towns are just being bulldozed and undercounting bodies. No idea if this is true or just internet gossip and frustration.

Another friends daughter is okay, lucky to be on higher ground.

Reports from a helicopter pilot. Hard to find spots to land. A lot of people are getting sick because they are drinking from creeks and streams due to lack of clean water. Ticks and fleas are a problem. Basically it's like camping until they clear roads but most are blocked with debris or roads are gone due to water damage.

As of now I-40 and I-26 are closed and you have to use backroads to get to Asheville from Charlotte

There’s no logical reason or feasible way to simply “bulldoze a whole town” in the midst of a natural disaster.

1. Where are these bulldozers coming from? Where are they getting gas? Who’s driving them?
2. At some point, bulldozing crumpled structures likely will be necessary. Utilities such as gas and electric ( that’s already defaulted of course) have to be secured first.

but you have to remember these are towns along the River. There are plenty of high ground areas that weren’t flooded.

This storm didn’t wipe out every piece of machinery in the area. Plenty of people and businesses were on higher grounds.

Compare this list of reasons of things that contribute to climate change:

Fossil fuels, Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, Greenhouse gases, Deforestation,Methane (CH₄) emissions,Industrial pollution, Agricultural practices, Livestock production, Transportation emissions
Landfills, Energy production, Urbanization, Land use changes, Burning coal, oil, and gas, Forest clearing, Waste decomposition, Electricity generation, Heat production,Corporate greed, Profit maximization, Consumerism, Market demand, Fossil fuel subsidies, Cost of renewable energy, Carbon pricing, Wealth inequality, Industrialization, Global trade

Compare that to a simpler "theory": Jews are doing it to get the blood of the pure!

Or even a SIMPLER theory: There is no such thing as climate change.

Wrong in most cases, but simpler.

Sci-fi story.

They all want to believe they’re the hero that’s mocked, ostracized, and persecuted for telling everyone all about the Secret Truth they knew all along.

And then, boy howdy, they’ll be the hero who showed you what for!

Because *they* knew the whole time, and were victimized by the rest of us Sheeple, but will be the only ones left standing in the end.

Frankly, it’s not much different from any organized religion in terms of the actual beliefs. And organized religion is the perfect primer for this bullshit.

All that shit is a LARP, whether they realize it or not.

In response to Reply # 0

https://abcnews.go.com/US/florida-gov-ron-desantis-refuses-call-vp-kamala/story?id=114570089

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has refused to take a call with Vice President Kamala Harris about Hurricane Milton, a source close to the governor told ABC News.

The DeSantis team believes the call from the vice president is politically motivated, according to the source, and is thus refusing to take the call.

DeSantis staffers also said the governor has not spoken to President Joe Biden in at least the last few days in the wake of Hurricane Helene and as the massive Hurricane Milton takes aim at Florida.

In response to Reply # 0

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/mike-johnson-wont-commit-bringing-house-back-election-hurricane-relief-rcna174174

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday did not commit to calling Congress back into session before the election after President Joe Biden pressed congressional leaders about potential funding shortfalls in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson was asked about Biden’s letter to congressional leaders on Friday requesting more money for federal disaster recovery efforts and after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned that the department doesn’t have enough money to get through the rest of hurricane season.

In his letter, the president urged Congress to restore funding to the Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program, which was facing potential funding shortfalls even before Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the Southeast. The president noted that the White House requested more funding for the program as Congress prepared a short-term funding bill that passed last month to avert a government shutdown.

Pressed on whether he would call Congress back into session before the election, Johnson replied, “We’ll be back in session immediately after the election.”

“That’s 30 days from now. The thing about these hurricanes and disasters of this magnitude is it takes a while to calculate the actual damages, and the states are going to need some time to do that,” Johnson said, adding that determining “specific needs and requests based upon the actual damages” from natural disasters takes time.

Johnson noted that before Congress went on recess, the day before Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, Congress appropriated $20 billion additional dollars to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to address immediate needs.

“Then after that, Congress always takes its the due approach of providing what is necessary,” he said. “Congress will provide. We will help people in these disaster-prone areas. It’s an appropriate role for the federal government, and you’ll have bipartisan support for that, and it’ll all happen in due time, and we’ll get that job done. There shouldn’t be any concern about that.”

Johnson’s comments come after Biden said in remarks at the White House last week he expects to ask Congress for a supplemental funding request for areas affected by Hurricane Helene.

Asked at the time whether he would ask Congress to return from recess for a special session for a supplemental request, the president left the possibility open, saying, “That is something I may have to request, but no decision’s been made yet.”

Congress has taken swift action on funding natural disaster relief efforts in the past even when it was on recess, a Biden administration official noted when reached for comment.

Johnson’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Johnson was also pressed about false claims by some Republicans that FEMA was using funds on migrants who have illegally entered the country instead of on the disaster response, which White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called “categorically false” on Friday.

The speaker acknowledged that the streams of funding for the border and hurricane response are different at FEMA before going on to insist that FEMA’s mission is to help people affected by natural disasters, and not engage in funding that helps migrants who crossed the southern border.

Johnson claimed, without evidence, that the Biden administration, Vice President Kamala Harris and Mayorkas “have been engaged in this program,” saying they used taxpayer dollars to assist migrants with resettlement by reimbursing nongovernmental organizations transporting migrants into the country.

“The American people are disgusted by this, up with it, and so are Republicans in Congress,” he said. “And it will stop after Nov. 5, because we’re going to have unified government with Republicans in charge and we will bring sanity back to this situation.”
