Because this trailer doesn't say that, but even if it did, our people's stories still deserve to be told and they deserve our attention.

Between this and the Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern colorism, Ho-teps are taking it to levels that don't need to be taken to.

Just making it weird for no reason.

All there is a vague two-minute trailer that gives away very little outside of mood, tone, and feel.

I seriously don't know how you connect your previous comments or Us to this.

this doesn’t look like a story about “racism”

that’s like saying Life was about racism because of the pie scene down south or the time period being before Jim Crow.

Or his white daughter w/black baby
Or all the inmates being black
Or how unjust and racist the justice system is.
Granted we didnt get stuck on the racism, the films backdrop (w/some foreground appearances) is racism.

But you know what would be nice, a film on Christopher J. Scarver Sr. Perhaps written from the perspective of a conversation with his son.

Now that I’d pay top dollar for.

And I think it makes a difference to have real Southerners play these roles instead of Brits.

Even with Black Americans from different places. For some reason, a lot of Black people who aren't from the south tend to talk like white southerners in these roles instead of Black southerners. It irritates my southern ears so bad that I can't really take the story seriously.

You are exactly right about folks doing White Southerners instead of Black Southerners. Piano Lesson has legit Southerners and it shows.

And what might be passable to a non-Black Southerners can sound terrible for people from there.

And I don't give a shit about Colin Farrell playing an American but I do care about the authenticity of the portrayals of Southern Black people.

Ain't that hard.

i was sort of fascinated by it as they were singing it in the movie because it seemed like something that might be like, some irish jig or whatever.

then, as we sat thru the credits for the end scenes, i noticed it was a song by someone named Geeshie Wiley. i turned to my wife and said, "that song was by someone named Geeshie so you know they are black...so the white vampires appropriated it, made it white, and were using it to lure or make the black people comfortable".

THEN, if you actually look into the deeper meaning of "Pick Poor Robin Clean"??? absolute fire as far as the thought that went into this:

will delve into the research that went into stuff like what you mentioned above.

I have to imagine some level of research and attention to detail went into the Irish jig portion of the movie, along with showing the Asian-American shop keepers.

It was nice for a movie rooted deep in a Southern black aesthetic took the level of care and respect to authentically display other cultures as well.

For a mainstream blockbuster movie, it certainly has layers and depth to it.

there's some great clips floating around about the histories of asian people in the mississippi delta.

the movie has so many layers and messages, and probably a ton more that may not have even been intentional but are easy to see once you look past the surface.

my favorite detail that i didn't understand when i first watched was the reason why Smoke and Stack are dressed how they are dressed, and how, that ultimately plays into the greater story.

Really interested to see how awards season treats this when it's that time, because it SHOULD win A LOT.

I’m not a big movie goer and pretty much saw it on the strength of it being an unapologetically Black film.

It was cool. I think this is the first Ryan Coogler film that I’ve seen; I may have to check some of his other work. Although this may be to only movie that has what I’m looking for

I was watching reviews via yt on Sinners and a few kept pushing sympathy for Remlick, noting how his country was once enslaved and he just wanted to get back to his roots in Ireland. So glad this article didnt go that route but further exposed or reminded us of the devils being exactly who them devils are.

Haven’t seen a reviewer speak on it but I feel Sinners also touched on the “cookout pass” that too many of us were willing to welcome in whites for the appropriation of our style or for giving a word in how anti-racist they are and pointing out the obvious evils of their people that we already know.

Oddly I couldn't help but think of Drake and Eminem. Drake’s always appeared as a hollow shell, consuming as many Black styles/spirits etc as possible to create his look/sound etc.

Eminem just showed how thirsty Black boys and men were for a white connection, even If it stemmed from hatred of women. Em was much like Remlick in the jig song scene, telling about his hard times to those that had it just as hard and made worse by him, in order to receive their worship of him.

Both received an abundance of n-word passes, never giving recognition to the Black communities they leeched from. In both cases most Black women weren’t fooled by them but for the Black women that did welcome them they were either belittled, ran through or existence dismissed. That last not being so bad at all.

One final thing, my grand would always say ‘when people show you who they are, believe them’. It was interesting that despite Smoke holding his brother’s dead body, seeing and hearing him change into something else, he was willing to step through the doorway. Even the asian lady was going to go when her husband’s image arrived yet couldnt understand why he stood calmly as big dude tore through the drunk guys body. It was kind of a ‘not us, but them’ moment. Once she realized there was nothing left for her that meant everyone else had to feel her pain too. Very much a white adjacent thing to do when you want the agency of Black folks. Also very white-ish of her to not recognize that the vamps getting Sammie was the goal and reason none of the them left.

Those yt reviews that you mentioned, "sympathy for Remlick" crazy.

Yep way too many passes for those who don't deserve it.

It's everything so many bigger budget movies these days aren't. It has vision. It has meaning. It has personality. It has a lived-in world. The sets are real, the relationships are real, the fear is real. It's funny, it's sexy, it's scary, it's sad-- it's got everything.

Coogler's the real deal. One of the best big-budget filmmakers working today. And I'm overjoyed he's using the clout he's built up over the years to make a movie that is very clearly personal and, from a $90 mil budget movie standpoint, quite audacious. How many other filmmakers today are doing something like that music sequence in the middle? On this budget?

Just really fantastic work. Thrilled he got a chance to make this, and beyond thrilled it's been a big success at the box office. We need more movies like this.

More Christmas movies coming in 2025...

Great hybrid of Period piece, Drama, horror, musical and action.

They did such a good job establishing the universe and character that halfway through you forget it's a horror movie until a jump scare occurs

didn't matter the format.

FIRE, either way.

Also, while the IMAX was good, I don't think it was THAT much better than Dolby to the point where you should feel like it was the format that wasn't doing it for you.

sounds like you just didn't like it as much as most.

Like Hollywood is scratching it's head at the success of an original Rated R vampire movie but from the first trailer I knew that everyone I know was going to want to see it in the theater and that turned out to be the case. Even my sister-n-laws who hate Horror movies were there because they knew Coogler and MBJ was going to serve themsomething satisfying and no one else is really delivering. Reminds me of Early Spike but more commercial.

I really enjoyed the film....but whish Jonathan Majors played one of the brothers rather than the VFX twinning.
