she definitely got the gift from her pops (Yasiin Bey). 18 years old and self written, produced, performed.

gonna be interesting to see how her career develops. this is a great start.

I decided to skip it but seeing that her dad is Yasiin I ended up checking it out.

It was cool, a lot of potential there.

Toro y Moi on some Teezo Touchdown meets Destroy Lonely meets Playboi Carti type shit. Didn't see it coming but i LIKE it.

LL Cool J - The Force

Was impressed with LL's rapping at 56 years old, not just the actual rapping but he was actually talking about some shit that I didn't expect him to be rapping about. The Q-Tip production was a little unusual, I'd say, but the songs themselves are good. This is a very solid album.

Durand Bernarr - Charlie Vettuno Presents...

Durand over house beats...not sure you can really go wrong w/ that. Durand is one of the best modern vocalists around.

Jayson Cash - Bet It Back

I know I've heard a random Jayson Cash song or feature here and there, but I wasn't thinking this would be this good. If you like that sort of everyman LA rap where they still keep a foot in gang culture, this might be for you. Like REASON, Cash is also from Carson, CA, so I definitely get those kinda vibes but he's definitely a bit different.

Ye Ali - THJ Radio Vol. 1

Ye Ali just delivers quality projects every time out. This is like a Ye Ali and friends album, with each track featuring at least one guest. Every song is just good R&B. Guests include: Tone Stith, JAHKOY, Reggie Becton, Ant Clemons, Eric Bellinger, Dende and more.

the Jay Worthy/Made In TYO had potential, but as much as i LOVE Jay Worthy he's not the kinda rapper that can carry a whole album that has no drums.

Terrace Martin was kew, but the best song on there to me came out 9 months ago already (the 24kGolden joint). i really liked the joint w/ 9th though.

I liked Diego Maradona and Details too. I probably won’t really come back to this, but I’ll throw those 3 in my 2024 playlist.

I think a common theme, beyond those being the best beats(IMO), is I like the other rappers on there and only gotta get through one Alchemist verse.(though he did well on Diego Maradona IMO)

His solo songs are just ok. I really don’t like Minnesota Fats at all.

i wasn't sleeping on this album, but them PERIOD.

Parks played one from here on the JBP and i liked it so i peeped. this album is fire.

for whatever odd reason, w/out EVER listening, i wrote these guys off back in 2007 when the debut dropped. just their name and the name of the album i think i assumed it wasn't gonna be for me - like some super duper undeground shit.

i gotta go back and peep the back catalog.

That one was definitely getting a lot of attention here, that’s where I learned about it.

All their albums together are good though. Blu puts out so many albums that I can’t keep up though, so I tend to listen to the ones whose producers interest me the most.

I love this new one. You probably heard him on the Roots album “How I Got Over”?

For me Below the Heaven, Miles and the new one are great.

Blu without Exile is more miss for me but he does have some other good ones. Loved Ground & Water with Damu.

Choosey & Exile - Black Beans is great too.

Haven’t gone back to it though, I should revisit.

From this year alone, I enjoyed the “Los Angeles” album with Evidence, and just listened to the Out of the Blue album a few days ago, which I liked.

His album with Nottz last year was dope too.

There's a strange sense of nostalgia I get listening to this album - really digging it. Out of the newer R&B acts, Leon Thomas is one to watch


Tommy Richman - COYOTE

Also another young R&B guy that's caught my attention. Reminds me a bit of JMSN when he first emerged on the scene. Album has replay value.

Been bumping it all the way thru multiple times now. will likely end up being a modern R&B classic for me when it's all said and done.

on Friday when i peeped Tommy Richman, it didn't grab me like i'd hoped (also, leaving Million Dollar Baby off it was a bold choice but i assume a deluxe is dropping tomorrow with Million Dollar Baby and a couple more joints or a remix). i went back and listened to it yesterday all the way thru and i liked it a lot (sometimes i get ear fatigue on Fridays from listening to everything that dropped). that said, i don't know what Tommy does. obviously he's the singer, but is he the producer or a producer too? it doesn't look like it from the credits. i say that because i LOVE the production on this, but Tommy is VERY Pharrell coded (it's clear with him being from VA that Pharrell is a MAJOR influence) and because i LOVE the production, and i find the vocals/songwriting to be serviceable but not great, and i just wonder how this would sound w/ some great songwriting and singing.

didn't realize he was from VA but your points about the Pharrell influence are spot on. and knowing that he was "discovered" / signed by Brent Faiyaz, his influence is also apparent throughout

it's funny because Tommy himself is a choir kid (there's footage of him singing in high school as a freshman), so you'd think his vocal chops would be stronger. but to me, it doesn't take away from the album. All I know is that I've been going back to Leon Thomas a LOT over the past couple of weeks but haven't gone back to the Tommy project yet. so much for me saying it has replay value in my original reply lol
