My wife is into the show more than I am. My main takeaway (aside from "tyler is funny") was that he's subverting the genre a bit by making the script so transparent.

Like the way the scenes are setup and edited together, if you abstract away the setting and the scene changes you can clearly envision how the script would read on a written page. You could have done some of the same conversations in a single scene vs. spread across multiple settings.

They also break the 4th wall a lot (e.g. Tyler farting and interacting with the camera man, other shots where camera or crew are visible) and having the masked character give a speech pointing out this is not real, camera is not neutral, this is edited, etc.

I know all reality TV is scripted / edited to varying degrees but here I think the choice to be so transparent was deliberate and makes the storytelling aspect of the show more interesting than if they'd just played it straight (no pun).

All of this! And the short montages they edit together are very well done. Episode 2 especially.
I didn't care for The Carmichael Show, but I loved Rothaniel, and I
think this is a great companion show to go with that stand up special.

Clearly there are A LOT of unresolved issues with his dad, because of how he seemingly responded to Jerrod being gay, but also because of the fact that his dad had a whole other family and his dad doesn't seem to have really addressed or acknowledged it. Like, Jerrod was in the same school as his siblings and everyone knew but him. Yikes.
