I know Cole wont trip but hopefully it gets him inspired

we already know Drake gonna be weird about it.

edit: damn, I’m old cause that shit was not impressive. Beat was wack and while the MJ Prince line was nice overall that song is something I will never listen to again.

Damn near 80k

Wauw

Props

Keep them lights on for us I guess

Anyhow

Drake been mid the last Scorpion

But atleast he been active

He good for 2-3 hits per album even tho they be lacking as a cohesive project

But I think that could just be the time we in and how people consume music nowadays

Playlist projects

New music drop I rarely spend more than a day or 2 act listening to the album in its entirety

I'll take 5-6 songs and add em to whatever Playlist I have from another new album 5-6 songs and so on

But like I said Kenny keep trying to play the big bad wolf gimmick and it's tired

Only his fans buy into it which I guess it's y he still does it

He is not a threat to anybody career

tough to listen to honestly. you go back and listen to him doing super progressive and weird stuff like on DS2 and WATTBA, then a few years later he's way overdoing it and the instrumentals are far less interesting and don't get you moving. it's like he's making oscar season beats where the goal is to get critical recognition and acclaim rather than just making bangers

I can’t believe they’re still talked about like that. Every Gen wants their “Biggie, Jay-Z, and Nas” moment and don’t recognize that it’ll never be like that again on a mainstream level.

Lute and JID both better than Cole. Drake….lmao.

At least Kendrick was great for awhile.

Phonte is super dope but his discography is no where near Kendrick. Not with those cheap ass Cassio-sounding beats he uses since falling out with 9th. You can be a super fan and still be grounded.

I mean...if you just need the best 16 I guess you go to Tay, but even that is debatable. But an album? Its not even remotely close.

KRIT? Meh....he definitely has his moments. But there's a reason he didn't catch on like that.

>I can’t believe they’re still talked about like that.
>Every Gen wants their “Biggie, Jay-Z, and Nas” moment and
>don’t recognize that it’ll never be like that again on a
>mainstream level.
>

Agreed, since that particular big 3 didn't even exist. Jay wasn't big until after Big passed, and Nas?....I mean, I guess in this analogy Nas is the Kendrick? I don't know. I never got the comparison and I'll never understand this fantasy world where it was Jay, Big, Nas at the same time. Seems to me it was Pac, Big, Snoop with Nas there too...then Nas, Jay, DMX. Pac, Snoop, and X are just forgotten in this fantasy.

>Lute and JID both better than Cole.

Oh, agreed 10000%. JID and especially Lute are underrated...was just bumping Gold Mouf last few days.

>Drake….lmao.

^^^ Definitely agree here. I've never understood how a grown man can play Drake's duck lip ass music, and that was before it became apparent that dude is a fucking groomer creep. I honestly don't even consider Drake a rap artist...dude is a product for pop music.

>
>At least Kendrick was great for awhile.

Stop it. Attitude like this is why a lot of artists don't take risks. Mr Morale is easily my least favorite of his, but not sure how you can't respect the artistry. Especially coming from someone in his position. He could have easily just dropped a lazy ass 10 tracks that took no risk/sounded like everyone wanted....you know, pulled a Drake...but he went for it. And I'm sorry, I don't see Phonte or KRIT giving us that level of risk/rawness/honesty and they have less to lose.

That said, I've been saying for years that Tay should get with KRIT to produce an album for him.

I probably went harder than I should’ve, my annoyance is more with the fans that act like these are the only 3 good rappers that have existed for the last 10 years and others in a similar lane get no mentions outside of their fanbases. I don’t understand it.

he puts in work and takes risks. Personally I don’t really care for DAMN either, but that’s just me.

Section.80 - GKMC - TPAB is a great run though.

I guess my overall point was the convo between those 3 feels forced, and in the past the actual best rappers were generally acknowledged as the best rappers. I don’t see it with Drake and Cole. Drake does what he does, and that’s cool but he’s not the “best”. And Cole is solid, but I just don’t see it beyond that.

In response to Reply # 27

and even more so now. It's like when Joey Badass came out and everyone acted like it was better than it actually was. It only got that praise from old heads because nobody was doing 90's rap. Same with Daniel Caesar, he's just doing Christian Neo Soul LOL IF Daniel, Kendrick or Cole dropped in the actual era they are doing they would just be some guys.

Kendrick to me is one of those guys SO talented that he was always going to overthink it and get in his own way. He's been overcomplicating things and at his best is when he's "dumbing" it down or doing what he calls easy shit. ie rapping on "Like That". I almost think he signed his cousin who sounds exactly like him to let him do that type of music so he can make his jazz skat super scientifical double time rap muppet voice music in peace.

Cole and Kendrick are essentially battling for second place aka Nas pole position. Drake has already solidified as the best rapper (not best technically skilled lyricist) of their generation. Having the best skills as a lyricist is cool and all but that doesn't make you the best rapper. That is one aspect of it. Drake is Hov, the rest of these guys are just trying to figure out who is second.

'OVO sound' is Hollywood-Southern more or less, I thought? Kind of universal, stylistic south that isn't grounded in a discernible, distinct American region and thus highly radio and screen friendly, like a British actor playing a cowboy

His last 2 albums just didn’t grab me like the previous 3.

But again - maybe that’s a “me” problem. And maybe they’ll hit me later on.

Has had huge mainstream success but still goes in the gutter when he spits. outraps EVERYONE he's been on a track with. doesn't need an extra 20 bars to do it. all that's left is to do a full album with super producers.

took me awhile to like KDot but boy is good. I think people wile out sometimes on EVERYTHING he does though.

Drake popular, but never memorable. Has good wordplay but doesn't make me nod my head.

Never tracked any of them as they were coming up, raising kids will do that to ya, didn't have the time to find the new, was happy with the old.

I don't have energy to type much more, already did too much and didn't even address the post subject lol

Pretty much addresses everything I been saying about Kenny

I think going at Cole was a mistake

He can say anything about Drake and his fans will eat it up no matter how mediocre the diss is

Cole on the other hand just be minding his business bodying verses consistently on the humble

They share a lot of the same fans and Cole been holding Kenny fans down while he in his droughts between albums

Kenny claiming the throne with 2 good albums in 12 years and dropping a decent verse every year n half

I mean nevermind the whole "beef" is contrived and one sided on Kenny's part trying to make noise being controversial which Cole also addressed

This was just a succinct "nygga this u??"

I don't think this was meant to take his head off

Let's see if Kenny really about this or if he already had his dopamine kick and going back in seclusion

also, Kendrick barely addressed Cole. most of the shots were aimed directly at Drake.

It was clearly a shot.

Your Drake stannery has you too invested in this my man. When your hate for Kendrick has you gassing J Cole its time to reevaluate.

This whole shit is corny, honestly. But, for the record, Kendrick didn't claim shit that wasn't given to him. He's had the throne since TPAB...neither of these dudes...or anyone in mainstream since Kanye went full Nazi...is even close to releasing albums like K dot. I know it makes you mad, but shit...pick something more important to be mad about.

Neither of these dudes are releasing albums on his level. And they've even had more chances because...apparently...Kendrick's biggest sin is taking too long between albums.

Maybe the issue is Cole and Drake don't take enough time on their shit. And like PROMO said...Cole's verse didn't even make sense. Kendrick gets attention when a rough draft original version of a song released 5 years ago drops...he doesn't need to diss anyone- let alone J fucking Cole- for attention LMAO.

Yet here we are all, discussing J Cole more than we have in 10+ years.

Oh, and Cole doesn't body shit. He is the king of forced corny lines that ruin a decent or even good verse. Kendrick doesn't even need to respond with a verse just a song of cut up corny ass J cole lines about out farting people and clenching and wet dreams and shit. FOH.

Not to mention J Cole calling someone else's album boring?? bwahahahaha at least he has a sense of humor.

Jermaine didn't lie once in this song.

Cole can lyrically sit Kendrick down but this was the first shot. Cole's issue is Kendrick is a free form rapper in the King Los vein changing styles and delivery. He's more aggressive and confrontational on wax than them.

In response to Reply # 0

There was a point where we all knew Cole didn't want smoke with Kendrick (I recall a song they did together where everyone thought Kendrick washed him), but these day, Cole been steady putting in work and seems to write more effortlessly. I think a potential battle is much more even now, and I might even favor Cole. This rhyme was very well-crafted, especially for something he put together so fast. I like both beats. The first one just sounded like something that used to run the south in the late 90s, which I'm not mad at as a southerner.

This could get good. Idk if Kendrick want them J.Cole problems in 2024. As we say in boxing, he's coming off a long layoff and Cole been very active. That's never good.

I’m a fan of Kenny and Cole and clearly some of yall cant handle Kenny getting bodied on a track.

yall know damn well Cole got at Kenny. Talking about beats and who said what first and trying to #wellactually is pure comedy.

Kenny better cone with some heat and not some squeaky mouse flow bullshit.

when you have Cole's catalog? HE (Cole) can't be the one to shit on anyone's catalog, especially when the main diss in there was that a widely accepted classic was boring, when Cole's biggest knock his entire career is that he and his albums are boring.

lastly, the work ethic thing? maybe he should take his own advice. maybe making your diss song in 10 mins on a beat the producer cooked up in 5 minutes ain't the best idea. and if the diss is Kendrick takes a long time between albums? they've taken about the same amount of time between projects their whole career, so that's a very weird angle, especially when all Kendricks stuff (even Mr. Morale) is critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

those of you convinced this is somehow a Cole W are confusing AF.

and then Cole walked ALL OF IT back cuz he ain't got the heart for beef.

Kenny ain't gotta say shit now.

so I get why he wants to pull back or feels like he put too much negativity out there. He ain’t rapping about Kenny being short or having a funny voice.

He went in on dude

Kenny: mf the big 3.. its just big me

Cole:

Light work like it's PWC
It's a cold world, keep the heat under your seat
I got a phone call, they say that somebody dissing
You want some attention, it come with extensions
My dog like, "Say the word, " he on bullsh*t, he itching
Done put in so much work in these streets, he got pension
I told him chill out, how I look having henchman?
If shots get to popping, I'm the one doing the clenching

I came up in the 'Ville, so I'm good when it's tension
He still doing shows, but fell off like the Simpsons
Your first sh*t was classic, your last sh*t was tragic
Your second sh*t put n****s to sleep, but they gassed it
Your third sh*t was massive and that was your prime
I was trailing right behind and I just now hit mine
Now I'm front of the line with a comfortable lead
How ironic, soon as I got it, now he want something with me
Well, he caught me at the perfect time, jump up and see
Boy, I got here off of bars, not no controversy
Funny thing about it, b*tch, I don't even want the prestige
F**k the Grammys 'cause them crackers ain't never done nothing for me, ho
Slugs took my n****s soul, drugs took another one
The rap beef ain't realer than the sh*t I seen in Cumberland
He averaging one hard verse like every thirty months or something
If he wasn't dissing, then we wouldn't be discussing him
Lord, don't make me have to smoke this n***a 'cause I f**k with him
But push come to shove, on this mic, I will humble him
I'm Nino with this thing, this that New Jack City meme
Yeah, I'm aiming at G-Money, crying tears before I bust at him

I got mixed feelings 'bout these f**king rap n****s
It's over for that cap, we official cap peelers
Two-six, we don't at n****s, we get at n****s
Shoot a n***a lights out, yeah, my dogs stat fillers
Stat stuffers, triple-double, get you’re a** black duffled
Body bag, body bag, body bag
Cole World your instructor for pilates class
Get a n***a stretched if I feel the disrespect, uh
Your arms might be too short to box with the god
Who live his life without the pressures of a constant facade
I pray for peace, but if a n***a cease these positive vibes
A Falcon 9 inside my pocket, b*tch, this rocket gone fly
Now it's popping outside like the top of July
My text flooded with the hunger for a toxic reply
I'm hesitant, I love my brother, but I'm not gonna lie
I'm powered up for real, that sh*t would feel like swatting a fly
Four albums in twelve years, n***a, I can divide
Sh*t, if this is what you want, I'm indulging in violence
Put pictures in my home, aim the chrome at your eyelids
Fly pebbles at your dome, we the Stone Temple Pilots
This is merely a warning shot to back n****s down
Back in the town where they whipping work and trafficking pounds
My jack jumping 'bout a rapper making blasphemous sounds
Switching sides like the tassel on the cap and the gown
I'm fully loaded, n***a, I can drop two classics right now

yall trippin’

dude apologized because he went all the way in and clearly he doesn’t like that feeling.

he certainly don't need to say another word to Cole. not now.

when one fighter taps out in front of the world, the winner don't need to keep beating up the guy who tapped out.

In response to Reply # 128

Literally no one is acting like Kendrick dropped Takeover. Literally no one. Dudes are just discussing Cole's weird/weak week.

Cole's track dropped what 4 or 5 days ago? Putting aside that he already walked it back....and putting aside that his heart clearly wasn't in it in the first place....AND putting aside the shit was weak, objectively untrue (and not even in an entertaining way).... and only reminded people how boring Cole and his catalog is...

Lets put all of that aside for a minute.

You want Kendrick's response already? Now THAT is your critique?

Just say you don't like Kendrick and keep it moving. Only people who are being dishonest about this whole thing are Cole stans and people who just don't like Kendrick.

You can keep saying "where's Kenny" but...probably won't hear from him at all now that dude very publicly walked it all back.

Just say "man I don't like Kendrick and I wanted this to go further" and own up to it.

This shit was weird/lame.

Again, J Cole actually put pen to paper to call someone else's album boring. And broke down K dots catalog in a very dishonest way and all it did was remind folks how weak Cole's catalog is in comparison. Bodied? Stop it. You just don't like Kendrick.

"J.Cole is the example this generation needs."

Not only is he the only mature grown man in all of this, the only truly thoughtful and introspective adult here, but he just showed a grand example of how to course correct in the middle of a stupid situation. He showed all the kids who follow him that it's never too late to stop and say "This is wrong", "I'm going in the wrong direction", etc and turn around. That's so important, because how many people follow through with stupidity just because the ball is already rolling, and they'd be too embarrassed to turn around? This applies to beef, relationships disagreements, all aspects of life. He continues to establish himself as a very important figure in ways far beyond the accepted childish norms of rap culture. I appreciate this young man.
I know we have 50 yr old niggas on this site saying he should've rode with the beef because he'd already indulged, and that's a great example of the "accepted childishness of rap culture" that I'm talking about. I was ready to see a good battle myself, so I'm not exempt. For those who say he didn't say anything personal, he did say "If shots get sent I'm the one doing the clinchin" or something like that, and language like that could cause problems with a Compton cat surrounded by dudes really 'bout that life. Some niggas don't be understanding metaphors.
Anyway, I've long said it's time for Hip Hop to grow up. It's always a vs or a battle or "who washed who" on a track and all that, as if we can't just appreciate individual greatness as others do. Crazy how Cole the only semi mainstream cat willing the break the mold.

are saying that Kendrick and Drake got tracks recorded and are ready to flame each other.

maybe they are just gassing it but it's clear they've heard them, or know poeple who have, and it sounds like they are going at each other's necks. like we MIGHT get some Biggie/Pac level battle (hopefully minus the death).

rumor is Drake will drop one on Friday.

we'll see.

cuz people who have it on good accord are saying both Kenny and Drake got nuclear tracks ready, but Drake is tucking it until Kenny does something else.

so, if Kenny never fires, and thus Drake never fires, what was it all for, Cole?

crazy.

Drake usually runs a tight ship and looks like someone got antsy

No lie i thought it was A.I. till he went in on Kennys label splits. think this was A.I because Drake move too strategic to drop on a random Saturday morning

I would've expected a whole LP of unreleased tracks to accompany this diss if he trying to step on future n metros album

Unless he 'leaked' it without the hoopla to get Kenny to drop his response and then backdoor that with another 1

This shyt hard tho

Kenny better come with more than weird voice inflections

At this point Drake’s made as much bad music as he’s made good music, and his last 6 or so years in particular have some embarrassing output

But when it seems in the biggest moments he can still show ass.

This is a pretty hard opening salvo if you ask me

Oh and i don't believe the nerd talk breakdown about the Whitney/bodyguard bar being about Kenny's wife supposedly cheating on him with her bodyguard

That seems like a reach

But Ye did say Drake be sending shots that only the recipient will know what it's about

This diss is hard AF because it took people off the court. Ross, Metro, and Weeknd's place on the court ended. Future is not important at all. Cole is not important any more.

Kendrick got sat down badly by every metric but he's an emcee. Expect a response within two weeks minimum. He's got two vicious Drake disses in the tuck already.. allegedly.

No one cares if the beat knocks, if someone else wrote it for you, if what you’re saying is even true

In a time where infonmoved at the speed of light and everyone gets a chance to weigh in, All it REALLY bois down to is “is it good?”

Everyone thought that Pusha “Story of Adinon” diss was wild at the Time, and now it’s completely forgettable. It was fun, but it wasn’t especially good.

But “Hit Em Up” is a great song. And credit where it’s due, Drake’s “Back to Back” is a great song too.. Memorable bars in waves, in and out in 3 minutes. “Trigger fingers turn to Twitter fingers” became lexicon. If you can make an anthem AND it hurts, then you’re the winner in this online age.

I can’t imagine just playing someone TODAY who’s never heard Ether and Takeover those songs now and asking this person “which is better?” Because even the most ardent Nas stans know the answer to “which is the better song” is not Ether.

...a battle song having replay value makes the battle song more impactful?

that Takeover is a more timeless song than Ether?

That the reason "Back to Back" and "Hit Em Up" hurt especially bad was because the songs became ubiquitous? Like, those were hits not just diss tracks.

Where am I confusing everyone?

I haven't heard Back To Back since 2015 or whenever that was.

Ether is part of the English lexicon.

You think it's not timeless? I'd argue it's MORE timeless even if it's, on paper, a worse "song."

I don't wanna get into a Jay vs. Nas debate cuz I don't care about it anymore.

diss records tho, its always the response that gets more appreciation because you are under a time crunch.

How do you rate Jay’s response to Ether? Shit was wack. He felt that pressure and couldn’t deliver because that pressure was on him.

Nas came with something way left of what Jay did sonically and brought a dope flow that was something different from the standard NY beat and flow

There are many ways to view it

But in the end this is about who brought the hear where it mattered: bars

In response to Reply # 194

How is it “wild” to say Ether is the better song?

First, that’s subjective, so saying it’s wild for someone to have a different subjective opinion than you is what’s wild- not that people hold that different opinion.

It was a battle and it was personal

It wasn’t “hey guys who do you think made the better song”

Line for line, bar for bar, Nas got him

The end

Trying to turn it into a discussion of which is the better song is shifting the goalpost from the purpose of both songs, and Ether served it’s purpose so well it became the definitive term people use to say someone got destroyed

Even if you think Jay won or had the better song, the fact remains that you could basically flip a coin in any given circle and get a different answer.

That in itself is an objective metric that says that Ether is, bare minimum, on par with Takeover as a song.

That’s the joint I’d pick to spit on if I came across both on a beat tape

I suspect that’s true for a lot of people who think Ether is the better diss track
, though are plenty of people who like the Ether beat too. It grew on me over the years but I wasn’t crazy about it at first.

So this is likely a “sum is greater” proposition for a lot of people. If Nas came weak over the Ether beat, this would be a very one sided discussion

I think a diss track changes the dynamics of how it’s viewed

Ross gotta be around 50.

Pac and BIG were 24-25.

Nas was 27, and Tae-Bo ho was 36 in a karate class(I think he was 32 or something).

Too old for all this. I haven’t been excited for a battle rap or diss track in 20+ years and I’m not actually listening to any of this.

JCole 39
Kendrick and Drake both 37
ASAP 35 (wow time flies)

the coordinated way the whole industry has circled around this...
- the pods hyping up that they've heard the disses already
- Akademiks basically being the Flex of this era getting sent the songs while he's on live
- Spotify w/ the "rap is a competitive sport" billboards

...all it really does is highlight to me the fact is that other than Travis (and he 32) it aint really no new STARS after these niggas and the industry knows they gotta bleed what they can out of this generation while they are still here.

so far they've gotten 2 big sales numbers out of Future to start this off as well as a #1 song for 3 weeks running. lets see what else comes of this...

2 years from now they can count it all up again when the powers that be get Drake/Kendrick to have their Black Republicans moment.

The challenge here is so many of these dudes have cut some backroom deals for varying levels of 'protection' whether it be skreets, industry, or both. And enough of those 'governing' people have allowed all of this not sneaky sneak dissing to happen over the last decade or so.

However it goes, Drake and Kendrick never 'publicly making up' is probably best for business as long as it stays in the music.

The innanet is obsessed with comparing these guys to one another no matter what. They may as well throw some shots at each other and then get back to it. Drake called the 'dudes cliquing up' thing a while back so its funny to see it coming to pass.

i'm somewhat knowledgeable about how the game goes, but by no means an expert. from what i know, wouldn't most artists kill to split things 50/50 with their label?

aren't most major artists out here fighting for 10 percent or less?

i'm confused.

Pretty sure Drake also had a shitty deal out the gate.

Reminds me of Jay talking about Nas’ publishing deal with Serchlight.

everyone is signed to someone unless you are truly independent

In response to Reply # 208

I know Pusha did a good job pushing that narrative that Drake was getting fuked but it was cap. Cash Money/Young Money was only getting 25% when Drake was under them and he retained all his publishing. Basically it was a distribution deal.

And that was rare back then when most new artist was getting put in 360s.

But yea 50/50 is nuts for a Grammy award, Pulitzer prize winning artist 12 years into the game
