"Interviewer Asked Yasiin Bey if Drake Was Hip-Hop (video)"

On an episode of "The Cutting Room Floor" podcast, the host asked Yasiin Bey if Drake was Hip-Hop.

He responded by saying Drake was Pop to him and that Drake's music is compatible with shopping.

Here's a snippet of the interview.

Drake's main goal in music has been to be a pop artist since he started. He chose rap bc rap is popular and easy to get into. Idk why anyone would be offended. That last album with the mediocre house music is proof that he goes in the direction of the most popular music he can achieve with his talent level. It is what it is.

Funny thing is Mos touches on the disconnect from the end of capitalism near the end of the clip. He's concerned with Hip Hop's messaging and always has been. I remember when Fat Joe was mad at him for questioning guys calling themselves "Crack". His own content earned him the right to speak on such things imo. The very name of his debut album speaks to his loyalty to the culture, and he never lost that. Ain't like he's being a hypocrite.

and not a diss either. It’s the direction he went and what he wants. Drake fanboys will tout his incredible streaming numbers to justify their love…...so fuck they even mad about? He makes music for Target shopping and streaming playlists, and he gets that type of love accordingly.

I do find super passionate Drake fans who get mad over this stuff to be kinda odd though. Drake doesn’t even pretend to be that passionate about this shit.

It wasn't about wanting Drake to do anything. He just (reluctantly) answered the question of how he classifies the guy as an artist.

Also, from about the middle of the clip to the end, he's addressing how it's all about consumerism and product placement during late stage capitalism, and I don't think this applies solely to Drake. He asks what happens when it all falls apart and what's in it for the listener aside from pumping the pom poms. Now he didn't say he wanted that from Drake, but if you're asking that rhetorically instead of asking "what would make Drake Hip Hop to Mos Def", he just told you.

Keep in mind Mos has been talking about these things since before Drake came along.

If Black Thought was outselling everyone with what he does, I don't think anyone would deny that he's Hip Hop. He'd just be a Hip Hop artist who happened to cross over.
Drake is a Pop artist who used rap as his vehicle. Intention is everything here. Just like you said...

>Nothing for Drake to do but keep cashing checks and singing
>those awful 1 note bangers over afro beats with a salsa twist.

He does those because they're the wave right now. He rides waves, because his aim is to be Pop, which makes him a Pop artist. Hip Hop is rebel culture that was born out of "fuck that popular American culture shit, this is what we doing over here". It's more than what the music sounds like, it's an attitude, spirit, and intention. That's why ppl separate Hip Hop and rap. I know you know all this, I just think it's worth articulating in this post. Mos is about Hip Hop culture like that, sinceriously (c)Phonte.

for obvious reasons..

because he IS real hip hop.

Aint no white girls spitting Black Thought lyrics in the club at 1AM. BT is way too lyrical miracle spiritual for the masses.

edit: and I’m pretty sure the Roots biggest hit is You Got Me where they traded out Jill Scott for Badu for commercial appeal, and also added Eve to get the women, but still didn’t put her in the video.

Prime example of what you have to do to be commercial success in this industry when you spit hot shit.

I think Kendrick Lamar might be the closest we get to it, and even Kendrick early on had some amazingly clever and simple hooks you could sing. But his run was short because he is reap hip hop and IMO he sacrificed pop charts for a rebel message.

there is a formula

but the real will never stay on that lane.

Like, I’m real cool with BEP due to my people working with them. They some Bboys and real hip hip when they started. But Will made a conscious decision to go pop when they were about to get dropped.

He caked up, made mad loot.. but now dude is struggling artistically IMO because he sold out. Once you go there, its hard once that run ends because real hip hop fans looking at you sideways and pop fans aint loyal..

I like your point about having to do certain things to attain and retain pop success. It's a very conscious effort to walk that line, and Drake is very measured and intentional about his balance there. Even when he stumbles, he very obviously tries to regain his balance. He's a Pop artist through and through.

About Kendrick, he definitely sacrificed pop success for that last album. I recall an interview where he talked about always wanting to say something under all the flashy wordplay or catchy melodies of his previous albums. He gives a damn about his community and just spoke to them on his latest effort. This is what Mos was talking about in the clip. Drake couldn't care less about the ppl lol. He's in the club encouraging some small child rapper who's wearing chains while his white child is in Paris somewhere painting, and this is after he wore blackface himself.

Overall tho, I don't even think Mos Def hates Pop music. I think he actually likes it. If he hates anything, it's probably Pop artists being labeled Hip Hop.

and most rappers can’t do it because you have to strip down the content.

My homie was trying to work on a solo project with one of the Black Eye Peas and had him SPITTIN’ HOT FIRE and Will.i.am. was like… “yeah, its aight but ummm, this ain’t gonna work. We need a lot less words. The kids have to be able to rap along to it, make it easier to digest.”

This is why tons of lyrically gifted MC’s cant make albums. When they are held to the formula of radio and 16 bars and a hook, they struggle to do it.

So many people like both of them and know what to 'expect' from both musically. But that input is too boring to draw attention so we already know what its gonna be: lazy content farming and self-segregation on the socials. And it'll linger on way longer than it should.

Older hip hop songs showing up in Netflix series' that don't have anything to do with hip hop. Remixes/remakes/reuse of 80s/90s hip hop beats are a thing with young people.

These older hip hop songs weren't made to be pop music, but that's what a lot of it has become as the times and way that music is consumed have changed.

Or still fighting the good fight of trying to separate what you like or don’t like in hiphop as “real” or “fake”. Its ALL pop. Pop is whatever is popular in culture, its almost like thats where the word came from LMAO. Thats how words work. Nobody says you have to like everything under that umbrella, but that doesn't mean what you don’t like isn’t part of the culture. You are having 1990’s arguments in 2024.

The shitty songs or albums in Mos’ catalog doesn’t mean its not part of his catalog LOL

The fact that Drake can spit doesn't change the fact that you can throw a dart at his catalogue and hit something that sounds like it's tailor made for a shopping mall far more often than anything that sounds like it's made for headphones under hoodies.

Remember those? That ONE track a rapper would have on their album for the ladies. Song was unoriginal (about meeting a chick in the club and falling for her) combined with the beat + singing sample made it kinda hip-pop.

Not pop like Color Me Badd, I'll admit, but pop like the One More Chance remix by B.I.G.

In response to Reply # 53

As mainstream as Hip Hop is worldwide…Mos Def is pretty high up there in popularity.
He can’t go out in public and blend in
He can’t just say anything he wants without getting push back…case in point here.
He is very much a household name….in 35-48 year old households

I’m not saying he’s on the same level as Drake….but he definitely ain’t a nobody.

to become very popular. It's not a Pop song tho. The man is literally singing about wanting black people to be free, wanting a quiet life with his woman and children. Just happened to connect bc sincerity. Intention is everything when talking about what a Pop artist is. An artist who happens to have a very popular song is very different from an artist whose business is making a career of making Pop music.

All i'm saying is this whole negative connotation that folks are putting on "Pop" isn't really applicable in current times. Folks think they're slighting or dissing someone by labeling them "pop" is just silly....
Hip Hop has BEEN pop for a while now. You can talk culture and roots and "realness" all you want...but THAT version of Hip Hop BEEN dead....

being a pop act will always have some negative attached to it because its POPular music

only a few get to pop levels in any genre.

A diss is a diss regardless of how its labeled. That ain’t changed because rap sells a
lot of records now.

more subtle than people are giving him credit for. It's not just that Drake's music is pop, it's a product of, and a facilitator of late stage capitalism. There is no dissent or disruption in his music.

It's a really interested way to put it.

What's also kind of interesting is that Drake just shouted out Mos Def for helping him and paying him for a show on his last album. I bet Yasin ain't even hear it.

I agree with his assessment of Drake, but I'm in mourning the lack of empathy in this world. where majority of artists and the public are trying to ignore a genocide away....I guess it's on brand with trying to wish a pandemic away...or wishing environmental collapse away, or rising fascism.

All of them are tough IMO, and the others have their moments.

He can still rap though. He’s not 96 Nas, but he’s still sharp.

Agreed on Busta. All about the producers he goes with, IMO. Hopefully he sees he got way more buzz and respect working with Nottz, Focus…, Rockwilder, etc. than chasing….whatever he was chasing on the new one.

I got to really like that album not long after it came out. It’s good enough to revisit. And yeah, Mos’s verse was a highlight.

Hip hop is a young person's movement, and an opinion by somebody who is in their 50s really has no bearing on the current state of the people who are actively involved in hip hop (people in their teens and 20s). His opinion matters to people like (y'all) because you come from the same generation, but hip hop is for the youth.

(I don't care to argue because I know I'm right 🙂)

Mos was at his height less than 30 yrs ago. This mentality doesn't stop with music. They only know or care what happened in their own lives in every way, because the black community control wants them to be that way.
When you talk to young ppl today who don't know ANYTHING about the life of Huey Newton or why he was targeted, only know Rosa Parks for sitting on a bus, don't know any details about Jim Crow, etc., we end up with a generation who thinks twerking in front of police is revolutionary and think "white supremacy" means white ppl are superior.

How can the opinion of a great be meaningless??!

Not a rapper alive who can't learn something from Mos or the many other legends of the genre.

That being said, there advice also has to be filtered through the lens of old heads holding on to older ideas about how things should be. That constriction can be limiting.

too much money in music to limit earning potential and real talk, most of the older cats still put on better live shows.

At least when I watched the 50 years of hip hop. Most the old heads were fire and the young rappers looked like studio rappers. Couldn’t perform without a vocal track, stiff, scared of forgetting lines so they had no movement.

McJagger like 90 still getting it in. We should be too

all that being said, its just an opinion, you can agree, disagree or not care but we can’t act like those in the game or products of the game can’t discuss it. Hell, some of these young cats can barely give interviews

In response to Reply # 78

and Economics in General.

Young people aren't buying shit. Their "movement" is largely based on Vanity Metrics (streaming, followers, likes, shares, etc.)

The Rock the Bells Tour Sold Out almost every stop. Nas & 50 had Sold Out Tours this Summer. The 35-55 year old demographic has the largest amount of disposable income. Not coincidentally, that's the demographic that bought records and concert tickets during Hip-Hop's Golden Era. THEY ARE STILL ALIVE!

This "Youth Movement" is filled with artists canceling concerts and threatening to retire in their mid-20's because they can't get enough streams to actually make a living.

Like the mumbling? I don't think I've ever encountered anyone else from BK that talks like that. And he doesn't rap like that.

Mos actually has one of my favorite rap voices & accents when he rhymes but his speaking voice has always been so strange to me. It distracted when he use to act.

I've wondered this about him- but it's not in the same way you and the other posters are saying... Mos and Nas, favorites of mind, it's like the music triggers some part of the brain where it makes their speech (flow over the beat) so fluid like a native language. If you catch my drift, I don't know how else to explain it. Interviews might lead a person to assume they don't rhyme as great as they do if that person has never heard em before.
I guess y'all could say.. This can be said about a lot of rappers, speech versus rapping, but it's not just how Mos and Nas rhyme, it's the knowledge and intelligence, too. Feel this way about JayZ also.

Like I've seen/met so many people who were overpowering presences on stage and performing, but are meeking soft spoken when talking to someone in person or an interview.

I met Phonte once and was surprised how quiet he was.

Common can rap with a speed that he doesn't seem to display when having a conversation. Nas has a level of assurance in his rap you don't hear in interviews.

so part of this is like the talented scholar who also hugs the block and lives in 2 worlds.

Nas just different. Half Man/Half Amazing

some dudes just gifted. He’s one of them.

Funny thing about hip hop is a lot of these dudes some nerds. I played ball with rappers who had 2 left shoes and clearly never played or cared about sports. Then Bobbito hits the court looking like fucking And1 breaking ankles.

The amount of rappers who actually lived that street shit is small. You def have some who did but a lot of 2Pacs out there who went to art schools and shit.

Don’t get me started on producers. Those niggas really on some other shit.

Target, ok. He went on the “they have EVERYTHING! So many SKU’s!” (lmao) tangent which made sense in the context of what he was talking about with consumerism.

But, why Houston? I didn’t catch that.

He don't really say Mos is not hip-hop he says he's not into him as a rapper because he's not into the backpack thing. This is in 2010 in the aftermath of the street vs. backpack war in New York rap. The fact that he praises KRS right before this just shows it's political, not a real critique of content or style

Though he still implied as Mos Def being some kind of sub genre

which is weird, since Pun was a big fan of Black Thought

Right. And the whole backpacker v. mainstream thing always struck me as more of a thing fans argued about than the artists themselves. They were just competitive and dissed eachother (more from the underground toward mainstream than vice versa), they weren't actively hostile toward one another for the most part if memory serves.

It reminds me of that story an underground rapper (which one escapes me) used to tell about a fan who approached him like "I hate Jay Z too !" and he was like "what the fuck are you talking about I love Jay Z ..."

So yea Joe taking such a stance against Mos is definitely atypical, to my memory of that whole backpack v mainstream situation.

B.S. with the whole Hip Hop scene....
I was hype when Hammer blew up...
Of course he went pop, and that was the point where I didn't understand what was so wrong with it.
End of the day, folks got into rapping for fame and fortune. Any rapper that tells you different is full of shit. They might have changed their tune AFTER they got into the game...but nobody goes into the rap biz on some "I just wanna spit, I don't want no money or recognition"

but how many people really get rich in this game?

even those that crossover. Most go broke and them they don’t even have an audience to go back to because those pop crowds move on.

this is why I love seeing these new tours sell out with our legends playing their hits.

but I don’t see Drake as a Hammer type, he still makes music that is respected by a lot of people.

I wonder if Hammer still performs?

I think a JCole is a prime example of not wanting to dilute the music. Stays low key, makes mills every time his shit drops.. and instead of chasing easy money from all directions.

It might be an easy inference from his response, but it's not the only take away.

He was ask if Drake is hip-hop. And he responded he is pop. But Hip-Hop can be Pop.

We've let click-bait framing reduced a nuanced critique by Yasiin to "Drake ain't hip-hop".

He didn't even want to answer the question and give his personal opinion because he knew it was going to be a viral moment. He wasn't looking to talk about Drake because it's not something he actively thinks about.

But let's be clear, he doesn't fuck with Drake or Drake adjacent music and hasn't since BEFORE "Black on Both Sides".

Pardon the pun there, but the interviewer was definitely looking for web engagement/clicks with that question; and it appears she accomplished her goal.

Mos' hesitancy in wanting to answer the question initially makes me think he knew that was her goal as well.
