C.Os will likely abuse him the entire time he's in. (And he'll be a huge target for everyone else.)

It's going to be very bad for him.

He'll have to do *all* of his time and even if he is released unsupervised they'll find a way to get him back in.

Unless he goes SUPER Christian and can withstand the hell he's in without fucking up even once he's probably as good as done.

If this guy continues to be someone who can snap so easily into violence should they NOT find a way to keep him off the streets.

I agree he shouldn't be targeted for violence by COs or others but it's hard to argue this dude shouldn't be in jail until it's clear he won't snap like that again.

TLDR; DEFINELTY needs jail but not extended abuse.

My comment about him having to do all of his time was more that he wouldn’t be able to get him on parole\probation\paper and monitor him and try to get him to go along with the program. I’m not sure how effective domestic violence programs are, but they have to be at least as effective as unsupervised release.

I only know what I’ve seen in the media, but it looks like he has a long line of violent crime, and I read one of the articles where he said he “I had a bad day and was going to kill the judge” but I can’t find the quote now

He’s definitely someone who needs to go to jail, and to be reformed before he's let out and until that happens is someone who needs to be kept out of society. The larger question of “can someone be reformed“ is something I don’t have an answer for in this case.

I definitely would not want this guy around my mother or just in general in my (or your) neighborhood right now.

But I also know this guy is probably never going to go a day without abuse from the guards, people who have complete control over him, and other cases have been very very cruel for a very extended period of time.

Think about what they did to that guy who was a witness in the Eric Garner case, I don’t think this guy or anyone deserves that kind of treatment. Don’t mistake that for me wanting this guy coddled, what this guy did is a violent crime and he needs to have consequences for that, I just hope it’s not rat poison in his food or prison guards finding reasons to abuse him for years.

Not to say the dude was justified in charging the judge, but my first thought from watching that video is how on earth did the bailiff allow this dude to clear the judge's desk with such relative ease.

The rest of the time he was tussling with everyone else.

It seems like she hit her head up against the wall pretty hard though. Probably got some phycological damage too.

The judge stayed on the ground for several minutes before standing up, appearing to say she hit her head. Holthus “experienced some injuries,” the initial court statement said.

By Thursday, she was back at work, but remained “sore and stiff,” Chief Judge Jerry Wiese told reporters.

Holthus’ marshal was taken to a hospital for a head injury, and a law clerk also taken to the hospital for a hand abrasion. Both were released, according to Wiese.

Holthus was ”shaken up as most people would be – a couple of bruises,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Thursday. “But I’m very, very happy that she’s OK.”

ngl my 1st thought was "Maybe they'll start thinking before they give out crazy sentences willy nilly."

I'm not saying this is the case here, but a lot of 'em play in yo face during sentencing.

Not defending dude's actions at all but in a vacuum that snarky shit is wildly unprofessional. No matter what the circumstances, you're in a position to take away people's freedom. That's nothing to play around with rhetorically.

https://law.justia.com/cases/virginia/supreme-court/1977/761270-1.html

It's wild because his initial trial ended in a MISTRIAL. Then the government moved to have the trial moved to another county because the govt. thought that the Prosecutors prosecuting a black man for killing a white man in a majority white county could not get a fair trial. My dad use to lightweight brag about it as evidence how good the family name was and it took me a long time to understand the significance of that decision.

At any rate,he use to write my dad and I am not sure he answered but I've considered writing him to get his side of the story.

I tend to agree that some kind of punishment should be given out; even worse for the bailiffs that this got national attention.

however it works I'm sure their bosses will be feeling some heat and other judges are definitely not good with that

generally violent criminals remain handcuffed and/or have at least 2 bailiffs guarding them or during shortages/time restraints defendants communicate with the judge via camera/tv and don't even get that close

ATTEMPTED MURDER

Nevada man seen on video attacking judge faces attempted murder charge

CNNWire

Tuesday, January 9, 2024 9:32PM

A Nevada judge was attacked in court by a defendant who vaulted the bench and sparked a bloody brawl with court officials and attorneys.
CNNWire
A man who was seen on video leaping over a court table and attacking a Nevada judge while in court last week has been charged with attempted murder, according to a criminal complaint.

Video in the player above is from a previous report.

Deobra Redden, 30, also faces counts of battery on a protected person, battery of an officer, battery by a prisoner, intimidating a public officer, extortion and other charges in connection with the January 3 attack on Judge Mary Kay Holthus during his sentencing in another case, the court document says.

"Once he knew she was about to sentence him to prison, (Redden) did leap over defense counsel table into the well of the courtroom, thereafter rushing towards the judicial bench and jumping over it 'superman' style directly into Judge Mary Kay Holthus's judicial space, landing directly on top of her and immediately attacking Judge Mary Kay Holthus by grabbing her, pulling her hair, placing his hands around her throat and/or hitting her on the head," the criminal complaint details.

Several of the battery charges allege Redden fought with a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer, a clerk and a marshal, and spit on an officer, according to the complaint.

On Tuesday, he appeared in court before a different judge and a preliminary hearing on the new charges was set for February 14.

On Monday, Redden had appeared before Holthus again to resume the sentencing in the first battery case, for which he was ordered to serve 19 months to four years in prison. His hands, mouth and face were covered during his court appearance.

Redden's attorney in the original battery case declined to comment through his law firm's receptionist Tuesday.

An attorney on the more recent case has yet to be appointed.

Defense attorney had asked for leniency
The incident unfolded last Wednesday after Redden and his attorney asked the judge for probation rather than time behind bars, saying the 30-year-old is getting his life back on track with a new job and plans to resume his education.

Holthus then read the defendant's criminal history aloud in court, which included "three felonies ... misdemeanors, multiple DVs (domestic violence) ... robberies, attempted home invasion."

Redden's attorney told the judge he believed his client could complete probation successfully.

"I appreciate that," the judge replied, "but I think it's time that he get a taste of something else because - I just can't, with that history."

Seconds later, Redden shouted expletives and ran toward the judge, leaping over the bench and attacking her. Redden tackled Holthus to the ground, and both disappeared from the camera's view behind the bench, the video shows.

As others in the courtroom tried to restrain him, Redden screamed another expletive and threw several punches.

The judge stayed on the ground for several minutes before standing up, appearing to say she hit her head. Holthus "experienced some injuries," a statement from Clark County Courts read.

By Thursday, she was back at work, but remained "sore and stiff," Chief Judge Jerry Wiese told reporters.

either way after going after a judge its gonna make it a lot harder to get another judge to throw that out

it's probably a starting point to give him as much time as possible on top of the 4 years
