A truly seminal masterpiece of lyrics, production, vibes and even sequencing. The best Tribe album IMO and it's not close, and in my Top 10 albums of all time regardless of genre.

RIP Phife and Trugoy.

I agree that it's their best. People's might be my favorite and I love the look and sound of LET but Marauders as a whole is their best.

Not sure where I would put it on my favorite albums of all time but I'd guess top 20.

Agreed fully. People's was always my favorite, my only "complaint" is lack of Phife. But I'd have to agree that they really hit their stride on LET and MM, and either of those is their best album. I just have a soft spot for that first project.

It's not as consistent as LET and MM but I come back to it the most.

MM has a ton of great songs, no dips really. I wish they did a new vinyl pressing of it like they're doing for The Love Movement.

KRS-ONE's Return of the Boom Bap came out a few weeks before.

So did De La Soul's Buhloone Mindstate.

Wu-Tang clan came out the same day, but I didn't hear it for at least another month.

I have memories of talking with people about all these albums that month.

Diabetic dude I knew really love that Phife line.

Probably bumped MM an hour a day for 4 months straight - I don't think there were many days when we didn't listen to the cassette.

I remember working in a kitchen and listening to it. And on a discman in the car. And at my friend's warehouse when I picked him up to do something.

Snoop's "Doggystyle"
Souls of Mischief "93 til infinity"
Wu-Tang "36 Chambers"
ATCQ "Midnight Marauders"
De La Soul "Buhloone Mindstate"
Black Moon "Enta Da Stage"

Off the top of my head, these albums were in heavy rotation in our dorm.

December of 1993, we got to see Tribe, De La and Souls together. That show was absolutely fantastic.

Ghetto Jam too and Onyx was in heavy rotation.

Fall of 93 was ALL about Snoop though. He owned 93-94 like no other rapper before or since IMO. Only 50 or Eminem has had as high of a peak.

93 was the year I fell in love with music. I was 10 going on 11. Unfortunately I grew up in an area where hip hop wasn’t represented on the radio, so I had to rely heavily on MTV and word of mouth. Fortunately there was a bevy of dope music being released commercially during that era.

I’ll never forget the first time they played Special Ed’s “I Got It Made”

we had jokes for the first 30 seconds and then realized.. this nigga nice af.

The second half of 96 is insane

From It Was Written and Stakes Is High on July 2 to Muddy Waters on December 10, there seemed to be multiple albums dropping damn near every week.

Specifically from September-November.

Glorious times lol

That sounds like a PEAK era to see those acts.

1. Tribe with the 1st two albums under their belt, Low End Theory material still kinda fresh on people's mind and introducing the Midnight Marauders stuff being ULTRA fresh. Man...

2. Same scenario with De La's albums.

3. A new upstart Souls.

In that are it was bad timing when they toured. I was either in a city where they would NEVER do a show at or I was somewhere where busses didn't run after hours and a taxi woulda been outrageous or money was funny. If I knew what I knew now I woulda got a credit card and took Ghound outta town to see these cats. If I knew the tour scehdule.

Electric Relaxation is one of my all time favorite hip hop tracks. So many good songs on that album. Even the segway skits I dug because the musical backdrop for them was so mellow.

greatness. As time passes though, I have a bit more appreciation for Midnight Maruders.

On a side note, I can’t believe I’ve been posting here for 20 years now. Fall of 2003 seemed like a lifetime removed from the release of Midnight Maruders. I was a junior in college. The last 15 years seem like they’ve passed in the blink of an eye.

of good interviews as of late. Treach, Westside Gunn, DJ Muggs, DoItAll, etc…wish they had more of a following. The content has been better and much more consistent than in years past.

Back on topic, MM is perfection. Lyrics to Go followed by God Lives Through to end the album is so monumental. Tribe forever!

While The Low End Theory was more innovative, Tribe perfected classic jazz hip-hop on Midnight Mauraders.

From the innovative use of the voice-over to the highly creative and thoughtful use of sampling, the fantastic chemistry of Tip and Phife, the timely cameos, and the sublime production, it's a masterclass in hip-hop. Overall, it's a top 15 album of all time in the genre and my personal favorite.

While I am not nearly as cool as anyone associated with Tribe, they made being cool accessible in a relatable way to a blerdy, dorky, suburban kid.

One of my fondest childhood memories is listening to Award Tour in my brother's car. My older brother drove my younger brother and me to Streetside Records in Ferguson, MO. My older brother bought the cassette (I think) of Midnight Mauraders for me and the CREAM single from Wu-Tang for my younger brother.

He had a Ford Probe and had a subwoofer installed at some point. Man, the sound of that system bumpin' that bassline from Award Tour was too dope.

I still listen to tracks from this album from time to time. I'll have to give it some spins this week.

Glad you made this post, as anything to remind me of this album is a good thing. Especially in light of the news in the world at the moment.

sister got kicked out the house when i was a kid. She left behind a couple CDs. Midnight Mauraders, ODB first album, EPMD second album and Only Built For Cuban Linx. That is the genesis of my love for hip hop.

Tribe and Outkast are my favorite hip hop acts

is it Electric Relaxation or Lyrics to Go is what I now go through. There's just something about those two that are just perfect to me.
