what song comes to mind? Think about it.

That's what made this tweet so funny to me.

I'm somebody who never liked the song, but I can't tell you why anybody else likes it. For me there's nothing likeable or remarkable about the song, but I kinda feel like it's slow enough and got big because people who clap on 1 and 3 could kind of vibe to it.

you just had to be there.

as people are saying in the replies to that tweet, i was in was the club literally the first time DJ's could spin In Da Club (you know, you actually had to get the records serviced to you) and that very first night BOTH "headliner" DJ's spun it 8 to 10 times back to back and not a single person was mad.

dancing and rapping along every single spin.

never seen that with ANY other song.

It wasn't the 1st song that came to mind for me. But as someone who was there, "In Da Club" is not a bad pick for the biggest.

50 had the scene on lock for a little while with "GRODT."

I can see an argument for "Lose Yourself."

I'm sure I've told the story on here about the radio station that advertised "all your favorites from the 80s, 90s and 2000s...with no rap!"

A little bit later, "Lose Yourself" was played. They made it abundantly clear what they meant by "no rap."

Anyways...someone told me it's "Eye of the Tiger" for millennials.

touchtunes being the main one. The bar owners can limit the artists or genres available to be played. So there are bars where you can't play rap on the jukebox... but low and behold, at those same bars, you can always play Eminem.

Peak popularity, overall impact, legacy, etc

In Da Club was a jumpoff to an entire era that overshadowed everything else at the time as a street level club track that transcended genres

I suppose Can’t Touch This fits the bill, though that was an overtly pop song based on a song that was already a huge hit.

Nothin But A G Thang and Juicy also spring to mind as watershed moments that weren’t just huge, but altered the course of the culture in major ways.

Country Grammar is another along those lines, though I’d argue that he didn’t directly shift the course of hip hop even if that sung rap style gained popularity down the line.

Nothin But a G Thang is definitely a contender.

Gin and Juice has gotta be up there too, that was just everywhere in it’s time and had staying power. You’d still hear that one often, many years later.

Than just the one song.

Artists like 50, Snoop, Big, Pac, and Jay all had massive songs that anchored albums and/or runs that helped that artist run the field in a way that overshadowed everyone else.

Gin & Juice was arguably the best joint on Doggystle, but What’s My Name, Doggy Dog World, and Murder Was The Case were huge singles in their own right, with a slew of album cuts that were also memorable and impactful.

Hell, MWTC became an entity unto itself, spawning a compilation album.

Those massive songs aren’t just hits, they’re anchors for other outstanding material.

and Lose Yourself would be the first few that come to mind.

Then there’s shit like Flo-Rida - Low that for me is easy to forget about because it’s so far pop that I forget it’s technically hip hop.

Does Hey Ya count? Because that was absolutely massive. Some of Drake’s singing songs were massive too. Doesn’t seem it should count if they’re not rapping though.

Or am I just overestimating how popular it was back then?

I can't really think of anything like "In Da Club" when it seemed like everyone knew who 50 Cent was. I've been too out of touch with popular music to talk about the last 15-20 years, but Kanye's "Stronger" seemed huge. Other songs that come to mind:

"Gangsta's Paradise"

"Crossroads" was huge and even had Bay Area radio playing this mix around that time: https://youtu.be/Qyq1vHLwepY

"Ms. Jackson"

I don’t think there’s a way to prove it because it was before SoundScan, but U can’t touch. This was absolutely everywhere for an entire year.

I think that was the biggest hip-hop song that I can remember by FAR.

Others came close, but I think people forget that Hammer sold something like 10 million records in like four months. And that’s one way more people listen to the radio than today.

Like, I'm reminded of that RZA v. Premo verzuz where Prem talked about how Shimmy Shimmy Ya was one of those hip hop tracks that made entire stadiums of non-english-as-first-language-speakers in Asia, Europe, etc erupt and rap along word-for-word.

The few hip hop songs in the history of hip-hop that have achieved that level of global recognition deserve special consideration imo (although that doesn't need to be to only consideration), and I think Juicy is probably the biggest, best-produced, and most iconic out of any one could name.

In Da Club, Lose Yourself, Fight The Power, Can't Touch This, etc... all really successful commercially and zeitgeist-defining in their respective eras. And of course actual hip-hop heads would probably suggest other songs for more sentimental reasons.

But Juicy's catchiness, and Biggie's quotables from it, have transcended time and space on a global scale. There aren't many other tracks we can say that about (are there?? I honestly can't think of any lol).

edit: plus, the rags-to-riches theme in what Biggie's rapping + the fact that he's from NYC... it just works. Are yall really gonna give the biggest/greatest song in the history of hip hop to a dude from detroit or oakland lol

by Eminem, MC Hammer, 50 Cent, or others that might come to mind truly exceed Juicy's recognition globally.

Like, if we randomly picked huge music festivals in Brazil, South Africa, Japan, Sweden, etc

It certainly was a hit when it dropped. And it had folks eager for a lot more of Biggie.

But "Juicy" wasn't burning up the airwaves like some of the others listed in this post. It's endured for close to 30 years and can still get a party moving. And it absolutely has quotables that have become iconic.

But I think part of the Biggie (and to a lesser extent, Tupac) narratives have exploded after their deaths.

bc I struggle to agree, especially in terms of global recognition and lyrical content (I just think Juicy tells a better story, for example).

Also, I wasn't trying to reinforce any sort of East v. West coast beef or demean hip hop from other regions... just suggesting that Biggie comin up from rapping on corners in BK is a more feel-good backstory to going on to record THE biggest/greatest hip hop song, given NYC's importance in hip hop's history/emergence.

Just my take on the OP tho. I know there's legit actual hip hop historians on okp who might disagree lol

He's probably the closest thing Hip Hop has seen to Michael Jackson. Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em was his Thriller and U Can't Touch This was his Billie Jean or Thriller title track. It's hard to contend with an entertainer who has both adults and children dancing around the world.

Fans, especially black ones, as In 'Da Club. As early as 1997 I was meeting Black people in college from the Midwest who barely knew anything about East Coast Hip-Hop and didn't really care that much. But In 'Da Club was a huge hit with everyone everywhere. Those same people knew and loved that song.

The popularity of In 'Da Club was probably largely due to it representing the various geographical nodes of Hip-Hop all at once - associated with Dre's production (regardless of who did the actual beat) and a dude from Queens imitating a Southern vocal affect. Plus a co-sign from the biggest white rapper of all time. It united everyone.

I think it's interesting that songs that are huge hits in this streaming era don't seem to hang around as long as they used to. And they don't seem to evoke the same feelings when they're played 10 years later.

Drake is wildly successful with a long list of hits and almost a permanent spot on the charts. But to me, it feels like his songs are huge for a couple months and then disappear (often replaced by another Drake song). Do 30-somethings get hyped when "Best I Ever Had" or "Successful" get played today?

And I don't mind Drake. I don't love everything he does but he has some stuff I like. I'm not just shaking my fist at clouds.

that's the result of the sheer number of records that come out. there are just too many songs.

I read there are over 100k songs uploaded daily across Spotify and other platforms. it's entirely too much and doesn't allow the music to live with folks as long.

with that said, we might need somebody younger to get their view. lol

yes and no. I think it's harder to get attention now, but also think it's easier for consumers to get the product. we had to go to the store to get the music. now it's automatically available with an app.
