I've been a huge fan since "DDD." The follow-up EP "Ama, Who?" is some of her best work. The EP that came after that, "At Least We Have This" was a let down for me. So, I had high hopes that the album would bring out her best as I think she's one of the most talented young artists out there.

And so the album "Came Home Late" is solid on my initial listens. There's some really good stuff on here, and a few things that don't really work for me. Solid, and I think she's capable of more. I've probably gotta give it some more focused listens before I can give a better articulation of what I think here.

I'm enjoying the Romy album. A bit different from The/Jamie xx's stuff and has a late 90s trance and deep house sound, and it's done well.

"Loveher": https://youtu.be/k6gGG7u0dbE

"Twice" (reminds me of Tracey Thorn a bit here): https://youtu.be/cDXSfQAlfU4

Singles/B-Sides:

I've had this new single from MONDO GROSSO on repeat. I'm pretty ambivalent about the who "virtual" singer thing, but I really dig the chorus: https://youtu.be/4CpM2oSuElQ

"New Joy" by Slauson Malone 1: https://youtu.be/C2_-bavZcLo

"MAYNARD VIGNETTE" by Killer Mike featuring T.I., JID, & Jacquees: https://youtu.be/JqvDCD-bzw0

"Muzzle" by Flooding: https://youtu.be/FIOSACb24FQ

"Where We At" by DJ Muggs & Boldy James: https://youtu.be/IR8KsA0GV_8

"For Us" by V (of BTS). Haven't given his album a close listen, but this was the song that seemed most in my wheelhouse with the chipmunk vocal sample and slower R&B groove, but I'm not sure if the changeup halfway through works or is unecessary: https://youtu.be/IRlVn2HjxL8

Sampha's "Only" isn't quite hitting me like his other stuff (yet?).

that Maynard Vignette makes me REALLY want a new T.I. album w/ really good production. he's ALWAYS been a personal favorite of mine.

I need to peep more of the V. the one song i heard was really traditional sounding R&B and i wasn't mad at it.

T.I.'s verse on "Big Beast" (also with Killer Mike) is one of my favorites and really surprised me because I didn't really follow T.I. during his peak popularity.

Listened to the V album in the car today, and it's pleasant and enjoyable. Most of it has that lo-fi R&B vibe and isn't very dynamic, however, and I don't think I'm much of a fan of him a singer.

I’ll see if it holds up -KD3 and Magic were my favorites.

But on first listen I like this one even more.

But I’m a soul sample guy, and I’m liking what he did on a lot of these beats better than the other projects. Posted in the Lesson how a couple of those sounded like some early 00’s 9th Wonder beats, which is right up my alley.

in today's music industry, it's very normal to put out a single or two and if they flop they don't even end up on the album.

that's what happened here.

>I hope there's an album on the way

because they like to record together in the same room and haven’t had time to lock in, as when they get together they’ve been working on their documentary and working on the Block Party concert that they’re putting on in Durham. They made the point that they’re doing the doc themselves, and that running a concert is a lot different than just performing at one, so they haven’t had the time to dedicate to an album.

Would love it if they end up getting one done though!

Which is a good thing for me, as I love that album.

Was cool to hear them on something different though with Glory, Glory. Conductor has been one of my favorite producers the last few years.

Some of my old man rants hit at the fact that kids don't slow dance anymore. But I'm glad to hea5r some good slow cuts still making the rounds.

I also got a few spins out of Omar Apollo's "Ice Slippin'." It's a slow song but it doesn't feel like a love song.

In response to Reply # 40

it's way less rappity rappy than she seemed to promise, but she's so good at making songs/music.

if you like 50s/60's music, this guy Stephen Sanchez put out an album called Angel Face that's pretty good. it's like sort of that sound like Bobby Darin, Elvis or whatever...like white soul (from that era, lol) with a little rock mixed in here and there.

i ran across a couple random rap projects that seem interesting. back with thoughts on those if they end up being worth thoughts.

FIRE. but hey, i'm a huge Lil Tecca fan. love his sound. him and Lil Tjay have really nailed that sing-songy rap/r&b hybrid sound the best IMO.

Art Devo.

Someone upload *all of it* to YouTube in case you want to here some WEIRD WEIRD stuff.

There's at least 40% of these I haven't heard - and the quality is great for almost 50 year old home recordings.

54. "I think I prefer Gold to Heaven"
In response to Reply # 47

I feel like Heaven was more direct with the Christian stuff but Gold definitely has it too. I don't think it bothers me enough to change how I feel about the music. That said, I don't think these two albums measure up to her previous ones. Those took some time for me to warm up to them but they each had some songs that really grabbed me. I feel like these last two I don't dislike any songs but none have really grabbed me either. Gotta see how they hold up to repeat listens.

Maybe her best offering in since debut ep, but still feel like she's not consistently reaching her potential. These thoughts are subject to change.

And no doubt it'll take more listens to fully appreciate just how good it is.

The XG EP is alright if you enjoy their style of Pop R&B/Rap. The first couple of singles really killed whatever momentum I thought they had musically, but I'm also not the target audience. There's this interesting short rap track that starts off sounding like EL-P beat to my ears, but the rest is basically a drill beat: https://youtu.be/KI5dc2BwhvA

The obvious ghostwriting is always going to make it feel and sound like they're cosplaying as rappers rather than the real deal despite being good performers. Their "GALZ XYPHER" track about a year ago seemed to generate a bit of attention, especially COCONA's part over JID's "Surround Sound" (the Aretha sample is always going to make me think of "Ms. Fat Booty" first). I don't think it'd hurt if they went back to that throwback R&B sound they had on "LEFT RIGHT" (https://youtu.be/T6YVgEpRU6Q), but the latest single is enjoyable (https://youtu.be/VFeRPM7Sm6c).

I'll check out the Jorja Smith and Oneohtrix Point Never albums next, and I'll eventually get to Wilco, Animal Collective, and Blonde Redhead.

wow.

like, if you like Jessie Ware's disco-embracing turn?

think that but if it was like 70s-ish psychedelic soul/pop (except 3 vocalists vs. one).

idc, her first album was fun "mall music", and if Olivia Rodrigo is getting burn, let Fefe cook too
