"This missing Titanic sub is the epitome of dumb, rich, white people"
Tue Jun-20-23 10:42 AM by Oak27

So what's best case scenario here? It's been over 48 hours of their expected 9-hour "voyage." Given the pic circulating of the dudes (maybe not these dudes but previous "explorers") cramped inside I hope for their sake it sunk below the depths it could handle and water pressure took them out because at this point all of these dudes have had to take a shit...

Pic of the inside: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FzCTIDoXwAI05BB?format=jpg&name=large

CNN coverage bullet points and timeline below...

https://www.cnn.com/americas/live-news/titanic-submersible-missing-search-06-20-23/index.html

A massive search operation is underway to find a submersible with five people on board that went missing on a trip to view the wreckage of the Titanic.

The vessel lost contact 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive Sunday, the US Coast Guard said. It has between 70 and 96 hours of life support, officials said.

Among those aboard are a British adventurer, a French diver and a Pakistani father and son, according to social media posts and a family statement.

The Titanic wreckage sits at the bottom of the ocean nearly 13,000 feet below the surface southeast of Newfoundland, Canada.

TIMELINE:

All times are in Atlantic Daylight Time, which is 1.5 hours ahead of Eastern Time:

Friday, June 16: The Polar Prince departs St. John’s, Newfoundland

Saturday, June 17: The Polar Prince arrives at the dive site

Sunday, June 18:

9 a.m.: The dive operations starts.
11:47 a.m.: The last communication between the vessel and surface staff of OceanGate, the group that was conducting the expedition, is recorded.
6:10 p.m.: This is the time the vessel was originally scheduled to resurface.
6:35 pm.: Authorities are notified and a response operation is initiated.

ALSO, it's called Titan, and then there's this:

https://twitter.com/CarlBeijer/status/1671155238450130945/photo/1

and lastly that you operate the vessel with a bootleg Playstation controller.

i mean, god bless them i hope they make it though it seems unlikely, but this sub dude who made and operates it is DEEPLY unserious.

cuz i've seen footage from other excursions down there and they were flying that thing through the wreck.

if it got caught on something...these subs usually have very gentle engines it's not like they can just crank up the horsepower and get unstuck. they are made to not cause much disturbance in the water as to not damage the wreckages of these ships.

a CBS News correspondent said the same submersible was "lost" for about 5 hours on the ocean floor, last summer...they were still able to send communications to it's mother ship, though. The fact that they've lost all comms with it, really does not bode well.

They had to “be there”

What a terrible way to go.

...keep's resetting. Meaning, if the sub hasn't imploded, the intro to the tour keeping replaying. Meaning, the passengers keep hearing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" over and over and over and over.

That's a pretty horrible way to die.

just saw it going "viral" on twitter.

sounds like it could be from some sort of report on the sub/program, like a retelling of their experience.

the source though? couldn't say. tbh it sounded like a troll at first but the more i hear about this situation the more i'm like "i could see it."

By locating whatever signal allows them to know something like that.

The one thing we can be pretty sure of is that there is zero information escaping the sub that anyone can detect.

The CEO stated that "at some point, safety is just pure waste."

(I know the answer is no but goddamn if that's not a chilling statement)

Either way this is a terrible, terrible way to die and even thinking about slowly suffocating for four days waiting to die seems horrific. A lot of people seem real callous about rich people dying but even the rich don't deserve this.

I really hope they had a hull breach and died instantly if they can't be rescued.

I'm guessing laying on exotic beaches with models gets old, if you don't have a cause like Gates or Bezos you end up on some wierdo shit like Musk or Epstein.

It just bothers me that millions in public money is spent on almost pointless "search and rescue" missions after foolhardy decisions by such people

This is amplified given the resources at hand, and the decision to use such a shoddy vessel for what amounts to a gaudy venture.

While we “should” remember that these are human lives at risk, with loved ones who are likely scared shitless right along with the passengers…

But there’s such a disconnect with the common person that I can’t fault said common people for, amidst the basic struggle to pay for groceries among other things, rolling their eyes and not giving a shred of a fuck.

over how resources are spent saving people’s lives is interesting.
It’s simply the inverse of how conservatives feel about drug users and gang members who, let’s be honest, occupy a far greater share of money and resources on a daily basis due to questionable decisions most of us would avoid at all costs.

I guess it’s a unique story with some allure. More interesting to me is how this garners more attention then the 80+ lives lost recently on a migrant boat while trying to reach Greece.

not confirmed if it's their sub. if it is though, what i thought was the mostly likely outcome might have happened, which is they went down, lost pressurization, it imploded, and they were so far down it's just taken awhile for the debris to come up to where it could be found.

But with each trip, the integrity of the carbon fiber is lessened because of tears in the carbon fiber from the pressure of the trip. I think the carbon fiber had so many tears that it was certified for only 1000 ft, not the 4000 ft of the titanic. Also carbon fiber gives no warning when it fails. It just shatters. This was all in the report of the whistleblower that was fired.

I do know from cycling...using CF frames, wheels, seat posts, etc...that is dead on. CF let's go without warning. When it fails, it fails miserably. An alloy wheel can bend and you might be able to make it home, slowly. When a CF wheel fails, just gone head call a friend to come scoop you, or pick that bike up and start walking.

i know a bit about steel vs aluminum vs carbon from bike shopping.

carbon is INCREDIBLY strong for its weight - like 5-10x steel or something.

But when it fails it basically just explodes.

Steel fails very gracefully - it deforms before failure, can be healed, melted, hammered into shape, etc.

If you dent a steel bike frame there's still no chance it just cracks under you.

With a carbon frame - if there's even a hairline crack you throw it out.

only topped by Bezos' and Branson's space tourism megalomania because of how much money those bums wasted to float for a few minutes.

(by the way, Bezos' reaction to Shatner's deep, feeling response is a must watch. tells you all you need to know about Bezos' humanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSNXBvpLb9o )

my question is...the people in that septic tank of a submarine...how many times collectivley had they seen the movie Titanic? i hope enough that they were able to act out some of the scenes. and now for the final act...

but yea, no way in hell i would have gotten in that thing. i think that decision is on those people. but i don't think most people (especially a 19 year old) are in anything near full control of their will when they are in the presence of a billionaire. so really, it's on him for being dumb enough to trust the company that made the sub. did he talk to james cameron about his decision?

on two fronts:

- i'm guessing there will be some sort of new regulations coming for this kind of stuff

- how this will shake out for OceanGate because i saw some stuff about them not really being protected even though everyone signed waivers. then you have the whistleblower stuff. i mean i'd assume they are out of business no matter what cuz no one would wanna work with them?

"For the sub’s electronics to fail and its communication system to fail, and its tracking transponder to fail simultaneously — sub’s gone,” he told the British broadcaster.

“For me, there was no doubt. I knew that sub was sitting exactly underneath its last known depth and position, and that’s exactly where they found it. There was no search. When they finally got an ROV down there that could make the depth, they found it within hours. Probably within minutes.”

In response to Reply # 144

It does not take much to cause catastrophic failure on critical complex systems. Typical eng-school lessons are like "If you have 70 critical parts, and they're all 99% reliable, you are more likely to fail than not (0.99 ^ 70 = 0.49)".

This is how a single failed REDUNDANT O-ring caused the first shuttle explosion, and a single foam tile caused the second.

The list of shortcuts taken by the CEO are basically GUARANTEED to result in something like this.

Along with the rushed timelines / cost savings, dismissed whistleblowers... ALL of this was true for both Shuttle failures and many, many other engineering disasters.

interesting.

very curious what the actual remains are (we'll probably never know) cuz this one scientist dude basically said you turn into a jelly.

so, either science/scientist dude is wrong, and they found an actual body/body parts, or they found jelly.

also saw a mythbusters clip about this and there was some "material" left but looked to be hard pressed to call it "body parts."

Billionaire could've had the best submersible in the world built if spent the money (and hired experienced people to operate it). Fuck was he trying to save money for?

Why even worry about making $250k a pop anyway when he's already a billionaire? Like a multimillionaire that's still trying to sell dubs and eights.

Could've just bought one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSV_Limiting_Factor

Went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, well tested, etc.

Only fits 2 people tho, so dickhead billionaire wouldn't be able to make an extra $750k on each dive.

was that he wanted to demonstrate the viability of these relatively cheap subs to oil & drilling companies (and other potential buyers) and the titanic tours were just a way of drumming up cheap press/awareness for the concept.

In response to Reply # 0

https://www.insider.com/oceangate-ceo-said-titan-made-old-material-bought-boeing-report-2023-6

Rush told Weissmann that "he had gotten the carbon fiber used to make the Titan at a big discount from Boeing because it was past its shelf life for use in airplanes," Weissmann wrote.

In his recollection, he asked Rush whether that was a problem, but he said he was told that the shelf-life dates "were set far before they had to be."

OceanGate declined to comment on Weissmann's claims. Boeing initially declined to comment, but later said the company "has found no record of any sale of composite material to OceanGate or its CEO."
