"Is That Black Enough For You" where I learned he turned down an early role Sidney Poitier took, because he felt it unrealistic that a black man would even be in such a situation. Dude really cared about the image he was conveying to the public and tried to give us something to be proud of without doing corny, cookie-cutter movies. He was incredibly thoughtful about his Hollywood presence. I felt the pain he expressed when black folks didn't support "Buck and The Preacher" and how it made him realize he wasn't only fighting white people's perception of black people but also black people's perception of themselves. He wasn't just here to entertain at all costs. He was here to do it with integrity. If only many more of us could live so consciously. RIP, brother.
