It served as a tense ‘I know he’s gonna do it, but when’ tease for me. I was enjoying everything and then just wondering how he was gonna say ‘fuck this guy for hitting me in the middle of the Oscars’. And typical Chris Rock, he set it up like a pro would. And then he roasted both of em and finally got it off of his chest, back, and ass publicly. And he roasted them thoroughly and hilariously. AND he did it in a way like ‘I’m aight cuz I’m fucking Chris Rock, but fuck that nigga. And his wife, with their weird asses. They begged to be fucked with so I fucked with em. And hell no, I ain’t gonna tiptoe are them or nobody else. Not now, but ever. Because, as mentioned, I am mfin Chris Rock! Haven’t you been paying the fuck attention the last 25 years!? This is what I damn well do! It’s gonna take more than one slap to stop me!’.

I loved the whole thing even if the Smiths part isn’t in there. But that as the finish? Yeah, it was a good time.

Definitely dope. I saw an earlier show of this , I think on 2/17 (I live in Bmore) and then the Will Smith shit was just in the middle of the act around when he was talking about victims. The shit worked way better with him ending the set with it.

The Revolution will not be televised...but it may be on ALLIANCE! Ask and ye shall receive.

First half of the special was extremely mediocre.

The story about his daughter was really good although wow…that was a lot to reveal. The Will stuff was compelling and funny. I’m not sure that stuff really made up for all the old man yells at cloud material but it was just okay overall.

Pronouns
Dated pop culture references
Kardashian material

And so on and so forth.

Like what you like, but yeah about 40-50% of that special is pretty bad for Chris Rock.

at the end of the day Chris is an almost 60y/o black man so a lot of younger “progressive” folk are not going to like his views plus he did step on some toes of some “sacred cows” like Megan Markle and the royal family

It's actually that the concept behind the show - the selected outrage - is one of the few ways to actually have some sort of commentary about the left/wokeness without looking like an out of touch rich person. Chris has been famous longer than he hasn't, obviously. While I don't really care for comedians tackling cancel culture, political correctness (which now I guess is just "wokeness"), I can appreciate a well structured show.

But that's not what we got. The "selected outrage" was used fairly sparingly at first, and then shoehorned into the Will Smith story where it kinda didn't fit to begin with, IMO. His views are his views. I don't have to agree with them. But he's one of the best comedians of all time. I expect him to not be SO out of touch with references but then again, a dated 90s reference is a pretty big part of the story here.

Everyone calling this a "classic" probably won't ever watch it again.

Online based on reading quotes from the special and not watching the special.

Of course reading a quote from E! Is going to be unfunny and seem like poor taste.

Watch the special and see the joke in context before getting butt hurt.

Because this kneejerk response people have that someone must be hurt if they are critical of something has never made any sense.

I haven’t seen either the show or the criticism just yet, but I see no reason why someone can’t simply dislike or disagree with the raw content of a thing without being “butt hurt” by it.

I do agree that both things can be true, but they are not synonymous.

he specifically said people are trying to roast CR based on reading quotes from the special instead of watching it. things can easily be taken out of context from a clip or a snippet. it seems like you're defending said critics without even seeing the special or the criticism.

My entire post was about the distinction between being critical, and being “butt hurt”

Nothing I said can be reasonably construed as defending anyone’s criticism- particularly since I stated that I had not yet seen either.

I was asking him if they came across as hurt, or as critical

You can be critical of the content itself without watching the performance.

I haven’t formed an opinion on the show or the criticism. I merely took note of the distinction between “hurt” and critical.

Do you have something to say about that distinction?

I mean just Search Chris Rock on twitter. There are a lot of emotional reaction to jokes and a fair amount of them seem to come from people who didn't actually watch the special.

I’m defending the notion that comedy can and should be fair game for criticism

Whether or not that criticism is well reasoned is another matter.

Most of the complaining I see about the criticism itself is just as generic and empty as the comment you just sent.

And to see so many people up in arms over what seems to be mostly empty rhetoric is joke unto itself. Like, *this* is an issue?

People on twitter with poorly thought out opinions? Shit what else is new?

Oh no, someone doesn’t like the new Chris Rock. What’s more butt hurt than being bothered by that?

And it's the dominant discussion of standup I see on social media.

Similarly, I get deeply annoyed with folks analyzing movies based on trailers?

Yeah its the same story of random person has bad opinion online, but I still got an opinion about it.

Over jokes.

>And it's the dominant discussion of standup I see on social

What’s the problem?

What makes standup so sacred that it’s above criticism?

>Similarly, I get deeply annoyed with folks analyzing movies
>based on trailers?

A trailer is supposed to get you to want to see the movie.
A side effect is that it can just as easily make you not want to see it.

Whether the criticism itself has merit is what actually matters in these discussions- but so often, as in your case, it’s just a generic issue with the act of said criticism/analysis.

>Yeah its the same story of random person has bad opinion
>online, but I still got an opinion about it.

As do they- which is my point. I don’t see the issue with you expressing uour opinion anymore than dudes wack opinion in the chris rock special.

I’d rather discuss whether a given opinion makes sense and comports with objective facts than complain that the opinion simply exists.

It’s a Chris Rock standup delivered by Chris Rock 2023.

So many comedians keep trying to say the same things about the victim talk, the outrage, and the business model of parsing through thousands of words in a standup to make sure to be ‘victimized’ by some of it. I think I get the message but I’m not the one they need to convince to cool it.

I laughed and shook my head at a lot of this one. It’s cool that he’s still capable of these. And the end was a necessary deal for him. Not saying anything about it at some point would’ve been kinda weak…especially considering that basically the whole earth has been speaking on it since it happened. And shit, if I remember it correctly, he’s the one who got hit in the face. We’re in a wild world where a dude is supposed to handle physical violence at a damn awards show with ultimate grace but don’t dare tell any jokes that might land clunky or risk your career..doesn’t make sense. Especially in the same time and space where a Trump is still walking around talking confidently, manipulatively, and incoherently on an infinite loop while having the undying support of an embarrassingly large group of humans.

Outside of that, it’s really sad that people can ever get caught off guard by a Chris Rock standup: whether it’s snippets or seeing the whole thing. To me, it was all very Chris Rock. Observation but absurd in spots for effect. If you like that even when you don’t agree with everything, you’re gonna like his shows. If not, you’re not. Not tricky at all zoomed out.

not that it's new but I don't know when it ramped up this much.

but the worst thing about it is people dropping their opinions based on quotes in an article or social media instead of the actual act.

I hate that every noteable comedy special is followed by a bunch of joyless discourse. and I hate myself for not ignoring it

Shit I can laugh my ass off at the joke while recognizing elements that are either problematic or just not well thought out.

>not that it's new but I don't know when it ramped up this
>much.
>
>but the worst thing about it is people dropping their opinions

What’s the difference? The discussion at that point is the content, bot the performance.

IMO, the inly issue is whether that criticism has actual merit based on said content. If a quote is accurate within the context of the joke, that’s fair game, even without seeing the performance.

>I hate that every noteable comedy special is followed by a
>bunch of joyless discourse.

I don’t understand this. Comedy doesn’t float above everything else.

I say this as someone who likes a lot of comedy people get pissy about. I love Bill Burr, even though he’s a backward caveman about a lot of shit. I think Anthony Jesilnik is one of the brilliant comics of our time and half his shit is about domestic violence.

They both fall under a largely liberal umbrella

One thing I appreciate about AJ is that he doesn’t get too up in arms about the criticism. He did an interview with Kweli and basically said that’s just part of the game.

Everyone has an opinion about everything, and I just don’t see why comedy is somehow sacred in that regard, particularly when the jokes are commentary based.

There’s nothing to look for if the moments aren’t there

If they’re there, people will notice

If there’s a car crash, it’s not the fault of the people who watched it and commented on it

That’s on the driver who caused the crash

For the better part of 6 months after “The Slap Viewed Round the World”, folks were saying that; “it’s just comedy”, “words can’t hurt people” “jokes are harmless” & any number of things related to that.

Now, most of those same people are trying to say that the damage from jokes are the equivalent if not greater than getting slapped into a concussion.

Which is it?

Do words really inflict pain, cause damage, hurt, wound and ultimately have consequences and repercussions?

Or is this simply a comedian, who’s well within his rights to use “harmless words” while talking about someone who tried to make his left and right canines touch on TV in front of millions and isn’t the “lick back” it’s being hyped up to be?

You are…very wrong.

I’ve worked in stand up specials the last 12 years.

So…perhaps I’m not the person to argue with on this topic.

the next hot thing streaming is here in 7 days or less.

that being said, i think if it wasn't so poor in wit or humor, i think it'd still be in the cultural zeitgeist.

i think what really speaks to that is the whole Will Smith part. like, that thing was so huge and people were waiting for year to hear from Chris, and even THAT part of it came and went in a few days.

Will even became a slave and ran to freedom inna movie before Rock dropped this shit.

but anyone acting like comedy specials have long buzzes in 2023 is lying to themselves.

Drake dropped an album and 2 weeks later no one remembered. Its hard out here.. lol
