"Ayo, the Wu is back!!! "

On Hulu..

First 3 episodes of S3 is out now. Dirty was a wild one but gotdamn he was way more talented than most people give credit for.. I used to think he was trash on the mic but had that dope presence. He was so much more, but he was a wild one! lol

Love this series.

no spoilers but seeing how all these artist were trying to find their inspiration for their solo joints is lovely.

There's moments where the acting is kind soap opera-y (like Rza breaking up with his girl)

Return to The 36 Chambers is my favorite rap album of all time so seeing it being made on this show is something I'm loving

I think breaking away from the norm was refreshing and to see everyone playing a total different character from their regular ones (except Dirt and GZA, in a sense) was good. Just moving in a direction for an episode felt good imo.

The Brotha that plays Dirty is talented as fuck and I hope he shows up in a lot more shows/movies after this

...even if I don't always think that it has the quality to match.

I'm pretty sure I've said it before on here, but I really love that these dudes are absolutely unafraid to experiment and try different shit. Sometimes it's really fucking entertaining: the Prince Rakeem episode season 1, the Protect Ya Neck episode season 2, and the Dirt McGirt episode season 3. and sometimes it falls flat, like the whole early stretch of season 2 that was really bad, capped by the Boat episode.

Let's face it, the Wu are some weird ass cats who could make weird ass music. So doing a straight-faced, completely self-serious bio series wouldn't have made sense at all. I'll take a series where Bokeem Woodbine plays a robotic Don Cornelius any day.

Really good start to the season. I still get confused with who some of them are lol I think I mixed up Deck and Gza for most of episode 2. I think they were showing Gza and I kept thinking it was Deck.

Was Ohio girl the same actress as the last season? I was confused about who she was. At first I thought she was someones auntie lol

I did fall asleep on episode 3. Not necessarily because of the quality, my body was just ready lol I was confused by it, I get the idea but I felt like there was supposed to be a quick explainer before it. Might rewatch it when I'm fully awake.

Eh on the Busta actor.

his Shimmy Shimmy Ya video was on some 70’s Soul Train steez

I like how ODB showed back up and laced GZA’s hook in 30 seconds

dude was so ilk with the hooks and melodies. While I liked ODB there were tikes I felt he fucked up good songs and didnt appreciate him like I should’ve even tho Brooklyn Zoo and his solo album were fun listens

I took it as this was Rzas interpretation of how ODB came up with the album. We got a peek into dirty's brain. I didn't know if I was missing references but going from "real life" to whatever that was was surprising lol

They definitely presented that the Wu was stuck without ODB. Rza couldn't make progress and as soon as ODB shows up everything starts moving.

I think at the start of ep 2 I thought to myself "why did they add GFK to Rae's solo debut? I should google that" then they give us an explanation lol I know the show isn't 100% fact but that was cool.

I went to Tennessee my first year of college and met the homie from Atlanta who is originally from Jersey. Dude took me to Freaknik and blew my whole world up.

Next summer I’m staying in Brooklyn with my sister and he hits me up and we went to Jones Beach and to Philly that summer.

In Philly with the crew and one dude is an A&R for Flava Unit. He says “there is this news group called WuTang I want to check out”

We were all confused.. wtf is a wutang? We get there but its $20 a head and we were broke college kids. Dude that was an A&R pulls out a knot and says he got us but we were like “save your money, mad honey’s out anyway so lets just holla all night”

I regret not going to see that show. It sounded CRAZY from the outside. Like there was a riot going on but to a thumping ass beat.

Prolly a few weeks later I’m listening to Bobbito and Protect Ya Neck comes on. This was when they stormed the studio. I was listening to it live on air and have it on a cassette tape somewhere. I used to tape all those Stretch and Bobbito shows everytime I would visit Brooklyn then bring them back and kill niggas in Pittsburgh because they were on that Midwest shit. Then a week later Method Man drops and I caught it halfway thru and still taped it because it was so different. That beat was hypnotic.

even crazier… is in 97 or 98 Bobbito was at my house in VA and went on tour with us as our resident DJ. Dude was TRASH as a DJ. Should’ve known when he said his name was DJ Cucumber Slice. Good dude, amazing basketball player with And1 handles.. HORRIBLE DJ!!! He never spoke ill of any rappers tho.. never told that Wu story to us either. He did say Stretch wanted to play more mainstream stuff and that was never Bobbito’s
mission and that was the reason they split up.

I mean know blending skills at all… lol.

The brief moments Nas, Big L and Fat Joe were on was a fun moment, although the guy playing Esco looked NOTHING like Nas

I was wondering if Capadonna would come back after his one scene in the first season

Yeah was definitely nice to see the story play out this way.

I didn’t even catch all those cameos, besides the obvious one.
Although I did think dude definitely reminded me of Fat Joe.

They keep giving nods and having appearances from other rappers.

I'm blanking on which one was supposed to be Nas lol

Also, even thought I was confused by the ODB episode I do think it's a cool concept to do these episodes for the albums. Would love to see someone do something like this with other Hip Hop albums or songs.

Which I’m okay with, because the show has actually been pretty consistent in giving Ghost a lot of shine and telling his story. I mean, he was basically the #2 star in season 1, and the stuff with him and RZA’s sister has always kept him pretty close to front and center.

Weirdly, I think Meth is the one who really hasn’t gotten as much shine. I don’t know if Dave East was busy while they were shooting the season, but he’s barely been around. I thought during season 2 they were setting up a Meth spin-off show. Still wouldn’t mind if that was the reality.

for a spinoff.

I made the case for Ghostface.
I thought that was fairly easy.
Depending on where the show ends, you get Ghost beginning to come into his own on Wu Forever.
He then goes to Africa to try and help himself when he gets sick.
His short bid on Rikers.
Then Supreme Clientele.
Each Wu album there's a star... The Wu comes out in 01, Ghost still in a ZONE after SC... is star of The Wu.
Then he leaves Epic and goes to Def Jam - drops Pretty Toney.
Then 05 drops Fishscale.

IMO it's not a question who should get a spinoff and seeing Ghost get even more wild & eccentric would be cool to.

just non-stop tension and problems. Love how the series overall covers everyone's viewpoint and problems though.

Glad they didn't trot out some bootleg actress to be Mariah beyond an anonymous extra.

When Divine played Cappa's verse, did he really know enough about hip-hop to know if it was hot or not?

Wonder if they are gonna tackle the downslope of the Wu trajectory before it's all said and done?

and just like uncut gems I was just asking why the whole time lol. Why not stop, take a breath and realize you don't need to do EVERYTHING at once. Obviously it works for the episode/story but it makes me have less empathy lol It seemed Ghost was the biggest urgency then it turns out it was all in Divine's head basically.

Did Tommy give him a deadline of his kids birthday for some reason?

I was also wondering if dude really would understand that the verse was good or not. I figured that was just for the show.

Probably my least favorite episode but not because it's bad. I just don't like anxiety for anxiety sake.

From what I understand, he didn't even show up until the early '00s. So they bumped up the timeline to make sure they could shit all over of him on the show.

And, hey, that's cool, because by all accounts dude was a total sleaze and was only interested in making money off of ODB, both in life and after his death.

didn't like this one, but I was pretty much expecting Gza's solo episode to be a Kung Fu film since that was the vibe of Liquid Swords, but I was pleasantly surprised with the Sci Fi/Mad Max meets S&M Wizard of Oz spin they put on it.

I was hoping it would lead up to a updated remake of the 4th Chamber video at the end and we got it

I get what they were going for, but it reminded me more of "The Wiz" than a 1970s/80s Kung Fu flick (which you sorta mentioned). Just a bit too heavy-handed and self-serious. Which, you know, fits GZA's personality, but didn't work as well as an episode of TV.

I did like a few things: Freddie Gibbs as Killah Priest and them recreating the "4th Chamber" video at the end. And, I gotta admit, "re-enacting" Liquid Swords' cover as the last shot was kinda dope and unexpected.

But overall, this wasn't one of my favorites of the season.

I mean, it doesn’t make sense to me that this is the first one to get you hype but the fact that it is surely means we got different taste when it comes to these cinematic episodes.. lol.

they even fucked up the beats on some of these for some reason

but I’m a huge Wu fan so every episode gets me hype to listen to their shit

I'd say Liquid Swords is my favorite of the three and theme of it definitely is.

The production value of the episodes I'm in agreement with. I think the ODB one was probably the best. Rae & Ghost was good but I still think pretty awkward, like a cheap remake of a mafia movie. To me this last one was kind of the same. It wasn't great but it was the quality I already expected so I was more focused on the story or message.

I don't really buy that Wu was THE force trying to save all of Hip Hop but the concept of it was cool to me. Gza feeling it was pivotal to have all of them together for the album and having to battle to make it happen was cool to me.

I think I feel like this was a more fleshed out concept for me than the first two.

from going pop and crossing over.

the message was cool. Remember GZA dropped right around the time hip hop was turning into shiny suits and champagne era.

In response to Reply # 0

There were spots that didn't feel right that they rushed but overall I think it was a pretty good finale.

Would have been cool to see/hear Rza turning the live symphony sessions into the beat instead of just going right into the finished beat when Meth asked to hear it but oh well.

seemed like they kept putting him in situations where he was going to have to just handle it by any means. I thought for sure when their mom came to stay he was going to get locked up when they went to visit the bf.

Georgia really has an 11 pm curfew or had back then??? Couldn't Divine just walk over and turn it back on?? lol

It was cool to see them having fun during the credits.

78. "I enjoyed this series but they should have been 13 ep seasons"
In response to Reply # 0

filming Protect Ya Neck should have been part of it.

there wasn't enough intersecting with other hip-hop heads, RZA and Premier go WAY back, that should have gotten in.

The Wu Mansion was in LA when they did Forever, and they were there when Biggie was killed. There was an authentic way, through Meth, that they could have highlighted each of those killings.

Having the orchestra ---> reunited should have been laid out with detail, to see how RZA chopped it and enhanced it. We missed seeing the group's reaction to the finished beat.

they had some wild ass touring stories. a few should have been highlighted.

Iron-Man needed an allegorical episode or at least complete focus, and Supreme Clientele should have been the last album they focused on.

Although to be honest, they didn't need those allegorical episodes except for maybe Dirty. All the rest should have just focused on their creative process. And Meth should have gotten more shine.

I enjoyed seeing the challenges of going from hood street niggas to recording artists and stars. They didn't give allow those tensions to be fleshed out enough, the tour bus argument on who gets what cut was good, but they too often fell on the artist v. management dichotomy, rather then letting each gain greater understanding from the other's struggles.

I loved this because it was Wu but there was a lot more storytelling that could have been done and in a tighter manner.

I think it would’ve clouded the series to add Biggie and 2Pacs deaths. Plus the actors they got for all the other rappers where hilariously way off.

Not sure but I think they went in order of the albums being recorded. I def agree Ghost should’ve got his episode but maybe since he insisted on recording in Staten Island the story of him busting shots while having ole heads in the car and RZA playing live instruments on his album was what he wanted.

I was ready for some ill Wallaby Champ shit.

I wish they would’ve addressed the Summer Jam shit that got them banned from radio.

Those are still the two most monumental murders in the history of hip hop and that arc is top 5 seminal moments. The Source Awards, east/west, everyone else has told the story, why not the dudes who were IN LA when shit was going down? Further cements the respect they had in the game.
