"I gotta give Burt Bacharach some belated props..."
I was never really up on him. I knew he wrote a bunch of big hits with Dionne Warwick and was responsible for writing a bunch of other big pop hits. I just never knew how deep his catalog was.
But I recently discovered that he wrote the following 3 cuts and was floored.

and this dude was amazing. Won a shit ton of awards for his first album. Then MTV came out and they wouldn’t play his shit because of the way he looked.
MYV was the best and worst thing in the world. Made so many one hit wonders and also made a lot of good looking average talents into superstars. Also killed a ton of creative musicians careers.

So, in the early 90’s in my early teens I started this journey of buying the the music of the greats of the past, including 60’s and 70’s stuff. This was the era of reading the credits to find out who wrote what etc, and it became apparent that many of these great songs were written by Burt Bacharach. I didn’t know anything about him other than his name from the credits, and this was pre search for anything on the internet. But I recognized that this guy was a next level song writer.
What’s weird is that for a period of time I just assumed he was a Black writer, as all these songs were being sung by Black singers. So it came as a shock when I learned he was white. I mean, so many of these songs I knew which represented the peak of Black artistry were written by a white guy. I didn’t know how to feel about that. It seems silly to think that in hindsight, but I just didn’t have the access to that knowledge in my early teens.
Anyway, his songs have contributed so much. He can rest satisfied. RIP.

not that it's not a wonderfully written song, but when you listen to Dionne's OG version and others before Luther did what he did to it, they almost sound like different songs.
all good in their own right, but quite different. unfortunately for Dionne, Burt wrote her some heat but other people ended up singing them later and making them much bigger hits.
