"Prediction: Debt ceiling will be breached, US defaults of all debts"
Thu Feb-02-23 11:15 AM by CyrenYoung

Just posting this as a place holder.

Remember: A debt ceiling increase is *not* authorization to spend more money, it's just authorization to pay the bills on the budget previously authorized.

But there's no way the debt ceiling is raised by this Republican congress without a default.

So when your parents don't get their social security checks, you know the deal.

That's not hyperbole, that is literally what that would do.

It would create a global financial crisis overnight.

Not that the Republican's understand this. It would also plunge us into a reccession, which would be a shame as this 'soft-landing' thing has worked out against all odds.

I honestly, don't know how to call out. We will see...

Also, if you find a single redneck gun farmer who lost $1 dollar can you really say it was not the worse disaster of all time???????!!!?!!!?!!!?!/!

After a pandemic that shook the *world for 2+ years* plus a war - I think that right now it's being handled in not the worst possible way.

Look at what's happening in England/U.K. right now with their pre-pandemic austerity policies coupled with the pandemic and Brexit - those guys are mega fucked unless they change course soon.

Core PCE fell to 4.42% (Dec '22) from 4.68% (Nov '22) and has decreased every month from Sep '22 (5.2%) to Dec (4.42%). The Fed's target remains 2%, we still have a ways to go, is all. I hope the Fed pulls it off.

Altho I have a question….can’t republicans draft their own debt ceiling raising bill crammed with anti abortion and other nonstarters, then essentially blame Dems for the default when the Dems vote against?

But if markets crater, and people can't get social security checks, veterans don't get pensions, etc. THEN it's real real easy to make the Republicans the bad guys in this situation (politically with the public.)

Dems will say: Simply make a bill that says "We will pay our debts and that's all." And they'll add "A lot of this debt came from Donald J. rump's ax cut for the rich and ever increasing spending."

The public will side with the DEMS, even *most* of the republicans. All the Non-MAGA ones + some MAGA ones who don't get their checks.

Don't forget - the Republicans are lying - they did not win a mandate to gut social security and Medicare and implement a national sales tax.

This is Paul Ryan shit all over again.

They can't win on that politically - and they know it.

But they can make things much much worse and if they can find a way to blame it in the Dems they'll do it.

But I still predict they'll do it, because at heart they are soulless nihilists.

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/05/23/house-gop-auctions-mccarthy-chapstick-debt-talks-00098347

House Republicans are bidding for steep spending cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. First, though, they paused during their private weekly meeting on Tuesday to bid for something else: Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s used chapstick.

Really.

The fundraising auction of McCarthy’s used cherry lip balm ended when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) placed a winning $100,000 bid, as confirmed by her spokesperson. She only began bidding after the California Republican chose to sweeten the deal: He agreed to attend a dinner with the winner and whichever donors and supporters they planned to bring along. That cash is headed for the House GOP campaign arm.

“I’m honored to be able to donate $100,000 to the to help Republicans increase our majority in 2024 and defeat the Democrats. My constituents will be honored to host a visit with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who we all think is doing a great job,” Greene said in a statement.

The moment illustrates the strange reality that House Republicans find themselves in: With McCarthy and President Joe Biden still substantively far apart on a debt deal just days ahead of the Treasury Department’s projected deadline, they have little to do but defend the speaker and raise questions about the reliability of Treasury’s estimate. So far, they say they’re strongly united behind McCarthy.

Democrats greeted the McCarthy chapstick auction, which was first reported by POLITICO, with barely masked alarm.

“They doing this insane chapstick shit while the country teeters on default. Wild,” tweeted progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

“Spending $100,000 on chapstick while working overtime to gut the programs that working families rely on. GOP priorities in a nutshell,” echoed Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.).

The fundraiser during Tuesday morning’s closed-door GOP conference meeting lasted about 15 minutes with first-term Rep. Aaron Bean (R-Fla.) leading the auction — after all, it was his campaign’s branded chapstick up for bids. Other members who bid included Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.) and Jason Smith (R-Mo.).

After the bidding and call for contributions to the NRCC concluded, House Republicans returned their focus to the debt ceiling. During that portion of the meeting, they expressed skepticism about June 1 being as firm of a potential debt default “X-date” as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has suggested.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) used the meeting to urge his colleagues to call Yellen to testify on her estimate in front of the House Financial Services Committee before June 1, the Florida Republican confirmed.

“So far, she’s been the Obi-Wan Kenobi of wrong answers on the economy,” he said leaving the Tuesday meeting, alleging that Yellen is following White House orders to heighten the public urgency of a looming debt default.

Gaetz added that Yellen has less to show backing up her forecast for a potential default than a student completing “a typical eighth grade algebra assignment.”

That skepticism was echoed by Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), who said that “we’d like to see more transparency” on how the Treasury came up with its warning, reiterated on Monday, that the nation risks being unable to pay its bills as soon as next week.

A Treasury spokesperson declined to comment on the House GOP rhetoric.

For whatever reasons (Gerrymandering and the USA tending to put the opposition party in power in the Congress after a Presidential election (thankfully not a "red wave" that would have taken the Senate also)....

The USA is a divided country/divided government.

So...

Biden wasn't going to fight that reality that much. So President Biden was going to compromise in light of that reality as to not cause turmoil with the Supreme Court deciding if President Biden had the power to invoke the 14th amendment (if that failed, no going back).

Not going back and forth about this analysis - it stands as is.

25. "not as bad as it could have been. Republicans look terrible."
In response to Reply # 21

Biden came out on top of the terrorists.

The people crying about this bill need to remember that Republicans publicly stated goal was to default. Like, these short sighted ignorant fools wanted to default and crater the world's economy solely to blame the Dems.

What did we lose?
Increased age requirements needing to work for food stamps. Took back some IRS funding (which is the most asinine thing given that investing in the IRS increases revenue). Capped totally spending increases. Loosened energy permitting.

What did we gain?
Biden won't have to worry about this fight happening right before his reelection bid. Didn't fundamentally reduce overall spending, Republicans were looking for reductions in the trillions and only got billions. Kept spending levels at 2023 levels instead of the lessor 2022 levels. Eliminates work requirements for veterans and the homeless on food stamps.

(I'm sure I missed things but those are my immediate take aways)

All these compromises are things that should have happened during normal budget discussions and not when the US is on the verge of defaulting. Republicans spent a lot of political capital to not even partially accomplish what they were trying to do. A complete and utter waste of time.

follows on Twitter. Blue maga is working over-time selling the exact shit you said. Even word for word.

tHiS wOuLd HaVe HaPPeNeD dUrING nOrMaL bUdgEt TaLkS LOL LOL

Its like a memo went out.

Biden admin is going to miss Ron Klain in a big, big way.

Look, the deal isn't as bad as it could have been in the sense that the hostage takers didn't get everything they wanted.

Sure. If you lower your standards enough, and pretend Dems didn't control the House etc yeah...this doesn't look too bad. I guess. If you aren't impacted, which no dem consultant or talking head is, of course.

But we went pretty far from "I will not negotiate on paying our bills" to "okay, okay..we'll do XYZ"....not exactly political genius.

(and leaving yet another opportunity on the table to demonstrate a partisan/corrupt supreme court)

The real misfire here is that Dems didn't control the messaging (as usual). Somehow they've gotten worse at it. Polls showed that just as many blamed Biden as the GOP...how do you fuck that up? Even Obama could sell the debt ceiling shit as GOP fuckery.

This is the problem when the Prez (and VP) is so bad at stump/off-the-cuff politics. Can't sell shit. And Dems are bad at it anyway, but it compounds the issue.

I also find it hilarisad that the same Blue MAGA types love to say shit like "The GOP look terrible" and "Biden bodied McArthy" etc but turn around and make excuses for the guy not being able to keep his entire party in line pre-election so that this shit was handled before the GOP took the wheel. Hell, even during the lame duck.

So, on one hand Biden can't be blamed for not being able to negotiate with Manchin...but on the other hand, he is somehow a negotiating genius when he gives the GOP some of the shit they wanted just a few months later.

Does Biden sell blue hats? he should, he'd make a killing off yall.

Didn't you already say you were going to waste your votes and vote third party from now on?

So, what makes you think I have any interest in your meandering, nonsensical arguments about a group you have loudly disavowed?

You obviously have a underwhelming understanding of American politics, and I have no interest in discussing serious topics with people who don't know the basics of said topic.

As in Biden/Dems should have raised or even abolished the debt ceiling in 22 while rhe Dems controlled the House, Senate and WH. The only problem with that argument is that Biden tried but Manchin and Sinema were the roadblocks at that time.

If they oust him before the bill hits the floor then it might start all over again.

Or the dems will have to vote for Kevin.

Assuming the bill hits the House floor without any major changes, it will pass with bipartisan votes. The Dems will carry this across the finish line if needed.

However, it would be wild if the GQP calls a vote of no confidence on McCarthy and then the Dems have to vote to keep him the Speaker.

Or can he open the session and put this out there before they can try to vote him out?

Because it takes a SINGLE Republican vote to do call for that vote.

Don't forget the Senate Republicans can also filibuster it, offer insane amendments and try to slow it down.

I'm trying to control my anxiety by asking the question and HOPING someone knows and can explain it to me how they can't still stop this.

I have NO DOUBT that *at least a dozen* of the house Republicans WANT the limit breached. Some for political reasons of being able to "blame it" on the evil DEMS, and some because they are soulless nihilists who want everyone fucked for *fun*, and because they expect for themselves to be personally *okay* after it happens.

I wont' be disappointed if it passes - it's THE OPPOSITE.

Me, I don't understand the rules on the house well enough to know if they could vote to oust him and block the bill - or dealy it so the Senate cna't pass it in time - -AND-
I'm worried because these are the same folks who increased the deficit by 1.7 TRILLION, and now are dis-ingeniously using "the national debt catastrophe!!" to try to increase defense spending AND also trying to cut off social safety net programs.

I have no faith in Republicans. This is all a made up "emergency" and they are literally holding the country itself hostage. I see absolutely no good faith in them - not one bit. ZERO.

Why wouldn't I be worried?

I'll be relived when it passes (and then worried about the next thing. )

This is a real worry - it's not like I'm worried a meteor will crash into my house and kill me.

You genuinely have no idea how anxiety works.

let the coverage right before an election year be about how dems voted to avoid economic catastrophy and extreme republicans imploded because they couldnt hold the economy hostage.

it drives home the biden/dem 'maga republican' messaging that helped dems in 2017-2023 elections and garnered a lot of crossover support from moderate republicans.

I wonder if the two more extreme sides of the left and right will ever agree in principle against moderate politicians again. Given how divergent both the progressive and MAGA groups are AND given how most politics is driven my cultural wars these days in order to score political points, I am doubtful.

Interesting alliances for sure though. I guess politics does make for strange bedfellows.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Fending off a U.S. default, the Senate gave final approval late Thursday to a debt ceiling and budget cuts package, grinding into the night to wrap up work on the bipartisan deal and send it to President Joe Biden’s desk to become law before the fast-approaching deadline.

The compromise package negotiated between Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy leaves neither Republicans nor Democrats fully pleased with the outcome. But the result, after weeks of hard-fought budget negotiations, shelves the volatile debt ceiling issue that risked upending the U.S. and global economy until 2025 after the next presidential election.

Approval in the Senate on a bipartisan vote, 63-36, somewhat reflected the overwhelming House tally the day before, relying on centrists in both parties to pull the Biden-McCarthy package to passage — though Democrats led the tally in both chambers.

We won't default, but they also aren't honoring the deal they made to avoid the default.

We won't default on our debts because that's mandatory spending, we will just not spend any non-mandatory areas.

Basically the 'conservatives' are going to try to stop funding for SNAP and other 'welfare' programs because of "DEFICITS." But they are proposing to slash a tiny portion of the budget and is only doing it because they are fucking psychopaths who hate the poor.

This *all* is the fault of the speaker - the deal he made for his position - and the COMPLETE unwillingness to do this in a bi-partisan way.

This might help:
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/government-shutdown-everything-need-to-know-rcna117203

Conservative demands for spending cuts in the House have led to the current stalemate. During debt ceiling negotiations, House Republicans struck a deal with the White House to establish spending caps for the next two years; that was designed to avoid a shutdown fight this fall. But seeking to appease the most conservative members of his party, McCarthy let House appropriators mark up spending bills below the caps that they had agreed on with the Biden administration.

So far, the House has only passed one of the 12 funding bills on the floor. The Senate has passed none. On two occasions last week, a small faction of conservatives blocked GOP leaders from bringing the Defense Department appropriations bill — usually an easy one to pass since it funds the military — to the floor for debate, as they demanded additional cuts.

What parts of the government would be affected by a shutdown?
During a shutdown, the federal government would be unable to pay its 4 million employees. Hundreds of thousands of these government workers could be furloughed, meaning they would temporarily stop going to work. During a 2013 shutdown, about 850,000 workers were furloughed. These workers would receive retroactive pay when the government reopens, something that was not always guaranteed until Congress passed a law following a 2019 shutdown.

Some functions of the government would continue, including the military and public safety, with those employees working without pay. Each federal agency creates a “contingency plan” of how to operate during a shutdown and which employees are “excepted” from being furloughed. The Defense Department plan, for example, states that active-duty military personnel will continue to report for duty during a shutdown.

President Joe Biden and members of Congress would all continue to work and be paid, as required by law.
