i actually wont be saying much that u might not already know because since i was there for work, didnt have time to properly explore all of it but it made an excellent 1st impression on me and im sure u will enjoy your time there

- the absolute no.1 thing i loved the most was the strong presence of the African diaspora throughout the city.... so tons of Angolans, Mozambicans and Black Brazilians

- im a sucker for seafood and i pretty much ate well every single night at a very affordable price.... i cant recall most places i went to but i remember one restaurant called A Gina.... i think it has some great reviews and i loved all that i ate there...

- city is beautiful.... its port.... its neoclassical architecture.... pretty safe from what i understand

it is on the bucket list of places i need to go back to with the fam

i'm all about fresh seafood so hell yeah. i will check out that spot

+1 for the African diaspora...love to hear it. I'm hella excited and have fired up my Duolingo to learn a few things...since I know French and Spanish, shouldn't be too hard to pick up

speaking of which, did you have any language barrier issues?

so no, didnt have any language issue.... i actually spoke english the whole time, city is super tourist-friendly.... was in the Avenida de Liberdade area which is in the city centre... u can pretty much walk all over in that area and there are of course the double decker buses that can give u city tours and i spotted tramways as well...

please promise to make a post about your impressions when u come back... i know there's a large expat community there because of the cost of living compared to the rest of Europe... check out this IG to possibly connect with some of them:

It's like a 30 minute drive from Lisbon. We hired a tour guide to take us. Most guides take you along the coast too and show you beautiful views.

That was my favorite part of my visit.

everything people told me and more...omg. It is such an incredibly special city

safe
clean
cheap
beautiful
warm/tropical (it never snows and there's random orange trees everywhere)
diverse/diasporic
friendly people who aren't snotty if u don't speak Portuguese
DELICIOUS DELICIOUS food
did i mention cheap? a cappuccino for 2 euro!!!
THE PASTELES!!! probably the best pastry i've ever had
THE CASTLES!! i went to Sintra but didn't spend enough time there
the fucking wine.

i could go on and on

the proximity and cheap fukking flights to all of Europe (and Africa!!!) makes me truly think about having my home base there. I'm going back in the Spring to see more...i didn't get to go to Porto

i put a zillion stories in my highlights on IG: lifeisluvv

It sort of confuses me to see you have this very passionate, uncompromisingly activist, justice-for-all attitude on these boards (which I honestly respect and admire), while at the same time indulging in a mode of travel that's quite destructive on a local and global level, mostly to the detriment of the global South.

Do you question it at all? Make efforts to mitigate the damage?

Like, I'm almost jealous, because I have friends in Portugal that I'd love to see more often (and Lisbon *is* a great city, even though it's rapidly gentrifying), but I don't want to fly there. The rail connection is still shit and expensive, and driving is almost as bad as flying with the cars I have access to. I've even looked into boarding freighters headed for Lisbon, but that's still not cheap and even more of a hassle than trains, last time I checked.

I mean, do what you need to do to feel good about the environment but these flights are taking off with or without you.

I don’t see how not choosing to fly on a commercial flight helps the environment.

Go visit your friends.. lol

all people contain contradictions; i nor you are just one thing. i contain MULTITUDES. Quite honestly, i'm even less concerned with your confusion about who I am and what I stand for and how i live. You'll have to wrestle with that for yourself

>Do you question it at all? Make efforts to mitigate the
>damage?

it is the responsibility of the corporations to solve this and I reject the way they have successfully placed this on individuals. while i'm in this vessel, i'm going to live in all the ways that are available to me and that align with my spirit and purpose. Seeing the world is what i'm here to do. But again, what i WON'T do is absorb moral responsibility for the systemic capitalist fuckery that's out of my personal control.

do with that what you will as your opinion of me is truly truly none of my business.

that's cool. we all make our own choices and I'm sure there are plenty of things you engage in that's harmful to someone somewhere.

i mean you're typing to me on the internet, undergirded by Amazon Web Services. let's not.

But go ahead with your jetset lifestyle. As if individual responsibility means nothing because big corps are bad. They're bad because people like you keeping rewarding them for it. Like you *need* to fly.

Decadent, whataboutist bullshit.

I didn't expect it to bring you and Legsdiamond together, tough.

Anyways: some airlines let you buy sustainable aviation fuel. It's expensive and imperfect, but it does mitigate the CO2 footprint quite effectively. Better than carbon offsets anyways. Worth looking into if you intend to fly a lot and care about climate change. Which you really, really should if you don't want your kids to grow old in a hellhole.

And now I'm going to focus on something else, because you're absolutely right that I'm a bit miserable and bored and I shouldn't have started shit it in the way I did. I stand by my general points, but I shouldn't have thrown them into your post like I did. Sorry for that.
