dude was actually the reason i bailed on the show. i just found him annoying and largely unfunny. i still watch roy wood and jordan klepper clips online tho.

dude came on the breakfast club early in the trump admin said everyone was overreacting and needed to calm down because they were screaming that trump is a fascist and a threat to democracy. he said he actually lived in apartheid south africa and trump wasnt anywhere near that so he wasnt that bad. i was pretty much done with him then. completely aloof for someone heading up arguably the most storied political comedy show in the country. even tone deaf ass bill maher was banging the drum about trump/repub danger to the country ('ongoing coup').

anyway...who do you want in that spot? who do you think is most likely to get it?

hasan minhaj seems like he was pretty much groomed to take over that job.

Anecdote that turned me off to him. There is this lady I know who was like a comedian booker/casting director. She invited Trevor Noah to an event like at the South African Counsulate. Or something where there were going to be a ton of Africans at. And he told her he didn't come to the US to hang out with a bunch of Africans.

Dude got the job by being a social climber, company man. Not being funny.

The bench is deep. You could go Samantha Bee, Hasan as mentioned, jordan klepper...I don't think Roy Woods Jr but dude is extra funny. Just don't think that's his format. Roy Wood should be in an extra black environment with jokes.

there are several stories floating around from fans and other people like in your african consulate story. dude bigtiming folks.

social climber seems like an apt description for him. just focused on moving up that ladder and compiling the resume.

and samantha bee is a great call. she would obviously be the most seamless fit as she has already proven capable of doing basically the same job on her show that was just canceled. thatd be dope if they just slid her in there.

through his standup. I immediately liked him. I think he's a really good standup comedian. He's obviously bright, observational, does great voices/languages/accents...which all add to the his stand up package. That said...I CANNOT STAND him on the Daily Show. My wife likes it. If we're chilling in bed an she puts DS on, I will legit leave the room or put in some earbuds and fuck around on my Ipad. That is not a good spot for him, IMHO. Maybe it's too restrictive or he has to check certain boxes, but for me it just doesn't hit. I honestly missed the Trump comments. Has he walked them back, at all? Hasan is nice. SUPER funny, too. I dunno what he will look like on DS, but I think anyone in that seat is just gonna pale in comparison to Jon Stewart. Dude was just a force, in that spot.

like you said...he says stuff to check off boxes. i forgot which music awards he hosted but he was so cringey trying to hit all the witty references to current events and pop culture.

its funny how animated and played up both jon stewart and stephen colbert were and they still came off as authentic. but trevor noah is relatively toned down compared to them (in terms of delivery) and still doesnt feel organic and true to his real personality.

I don't think he's really suited for the job. I'm glad he's moving on.

Also, Dua Lipa?

Ew, I'm a little disappointed. I feel like he could do SO much better.

Those were hard shoes to follow and I dont think he was exactly right for it but I think he could develop something amazing for himself after this. I really like when he has more candid convos with the audience on social issues that I usually end up seeing on tiktok, IG or twitter. I think more of a Bill Maher type setup would would work way better for him.

i'll watch an occasional clip, and the Clepper going to rally things, but that's about it. From my limited viewing during his run, i always viewed it as Jon Stewart being bigger than the Daily show, but with with Trev it was really "The Daily show with Trevor Noah"

But i've liked hearing him in interviews, or popping up in other things. I wish him well. I'm sure he'll feel less restrained now.

dunno who his replacement will be but it's pretty doubtful it would make me become a regular watcher again. Klepper, maybe just to see what it's like, but i don't know if he could carry a whole show, plus i doubt it's gonna be another white guy.

Like I don't see a lot of good feedback on his new show.

The self-righteous over jokes comes off a way that doesn't play as well these days.

I learn the term “clapter”, the sound of an audience broadcasting approval, rather than enjoyment, this week which I thought was funny.

if there's an interview guest i'm interested in

the only time i see him as self-righteous is when he's actually out fighting for vets and first responders, and since he's actively doing trying to get some shit done, i think it's well earned.

he probably left TDS at the right time. i'm not sure what the right tone is for now. None of these political comedy shows are all that interesting to me these days, but maybe it's just me.

And I think Last Week Tonight picked up where Stewart left off the best. I think Oliver has the exact right tone and I think his format is perfect. And he tackles the issues that matter now.

I legit almost said as much in my response haha. I think I just watch way less TV than I used to in general. Specifically, I read so much about politics and history in my free time that I don't really *need* to watch Oliver to know that I agree with his general positions. And many (tho definitely not all) of the subjects he discusses are issues that I'm intimately familiar with thru all the reading I do. So even tho it'd be entertaining to see his take on these things, I don't really have a *need* to reiterate things I already agree with, in my limited free time.

Especially given the political situation here for the last 10 years.

That show needs someone who is super smart, extremely funny and knows US culture inside and out. Jon Stewart was that. Trevor Noah has the smart part down. And he's "chuckle" funny. But he does not know US culture, and I've always detected a little hint of sneering distaste for the US from him as well.

A lot of what's wrong with the current incarnation of American politics can be traced back to Jon Stewart and his "I don't need to get the details right because I'm just a comedian, but I'm still gonna be self-important as fuck whenever it suits me" style of commentary.

Bring back Kilborn, I say. (I actually never saw Kilborn's Daily Show, but his late night show was alright until he decided to try to become the next Vince Vaughn.)

I wish half of these elected officials got as many details right as Stewart does. What he did for 9/11 responders alone makes him golden to me. He did that “I’m a comedian” thing to point out that the actual media is often to failing to report as well as he and his staff did and he’s not wrong. On any given day, you were better off watching Stewart for news than CNN or Fox. His show on Apple TV, especially the stock market episode, is priceless.

I love Roy & I want him to stay on as their top correspondent.

But I think Jordan Klepper should have taken over before Trevor Noah. I think he would have been more effective. With the Colbert Report ending, Klepper could have played the fake conservative that shows us how ridiculous some of their stances are.

In response to Reply # 0

The show came back last night...going to be a different host, each week. Last night was (and all this week) Leslie Jones. There were some genuine LOL moments, but I like Leslie. Additonal hosts will be Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Chelsea Handler, Sarah Silverman, Al Franken, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn, and Marlon Wayans. Not sure if they will keep rotating or adding more names in as it goes. I'm not a big fan of host by committee...but, I'm also not a big enough fan of the DS to be up in arms about it. Usually, at that time, my wife and I are falling asleep watching The Office and it comes on. We either watch it or don't.

I think Leslie was a good game show host, but not so much of a “news anchor”. I like her comedy but The Daily Show requires that “special something” that I don’t even know if they can get back to with the revolving guest list. I’m more excited to see how DL does.

That said, I'm not really anticipating Marlon Wayans next week.

His delivery and timing has been the best of the bunch IMO. Minhaj is a close 2nd, and Handler is prolly next cuz she's had that type of show before so she looked comfortable right away.

I kinda hope RWJ gets it. I love that dude.

Marlon Wayans was very hit/miss, on the same level of DL. I agree RWJ and Hasan have been the best so far.

Klepper is probably gonna do fairly well but I’m not confident about any of the rest of them.

If the list is already in here my bad.

But yea I gotta think Minhaj or Wood are the favorites so far. Hopefully.

Also, agreed re: Hughley & Wayans. Both had great moments but neither found a consistent groove or looked all that comfortable in the spot.

I put Handler on my list cuz she was really good and funny but I hope she's not in serious contention, and/or pulls herself from serious contention. She's already had a show like this.

Edit: I forgot, Leslie Jones was really good too. I still think Wood and Minhaj were a bit better but she deserves strong consideration, too.

In response to Reply # 69

Or Wood Jr and Klepper, though I do think after they dropped the ball not going with Sam Bee from the jump, I would give the edge to at least 1 woman. I'm not even saying that as a compromise or politically correct thing, I just genuinely find her hilarious and also think with where politics are at this day, it's embarrassing when shows don't have a woman's voice in the room. It's what I think is probably the biggest and most glaring missing piece that has seen Bill Maher go full conservative bait talking point nonsense.

Klepper is probably the most 'Jon Stewart'-y correspondent the show has produced. Wood Jr makes me laugh the hardest.

I actually would prefer Wood Jr make 7 more Fletch movies with Hamm than become a fulltime host of TDS, so maybe Klepper and Desi. I would say recruit Jessica Williams back to co with Klepper, but her star seems to be shining on the acting front, so that seems like a sailed ship.

Jon Stewart...who did the Daily Show for fucking years....and absolutely leaned left/Democrat in every sense...who primarily targeted the assholes at Fox News....and undoubtedly helped more young people engage in politics which helped democrats....is to blame for bernie bros?

He's also to blame for Hilary losing, etc? Is that because he left or because he made jokes about her...because you might want to pick a lane on that one.

And you are preemptively mad because he will probably make fun of Kamala's word salad stump responses?

So...people can't protest mass death, can't criticize the Biden admin in any way, and now comedians can't make fun of Democrats?

You blue maga people have lost your goddamn minds. Seriously. Trump broke you, just in a different way.

being a big part of why people put both so much trust, and overly scrutinize comedians.

why so many people trust Joe Rogan over, say, Fauci

or part of why comedians are more taken to task for their material these days, and how they can always be like, im just a comedian talking shit... why are you listening to me? Like in Stewart's famous Tucker exchange

That article was more or less a nothingburger IMO. And Minhaj's own responses to the "controversy" pretty well sums up my thoughts about it, although I don't necessarily disagree that he may have taken a couple of the instances a very, very minor step too far:

"In a statement to Variety made right after the story’s publication, Minhaj said, 'All my standup stories are based on events that happened to me … I use the tools of standup comedy — hyperbole, changing names and locations and compressing timelines to tell entertaining stories. That’s inherent to the art form. You wouldn’t go to a Haunted House and say ‘Why are these people lying to me?’ — The point is the ride. Standup is the same.'"
