how long was the program? 2 or 4 years?

I ask because my son is interested in Architecture but when I went to Temple, their Architecture program was only 2 years..

I'm sure a lot has changed since then but I'm also noticing the Architecture/Engineering combo in a lot of schools

did you find a gig right after? basically, how did you get to where you are now?

Thanks in advance...

My program was a 5-year bachelor

Hmmm, 2 years that doesn't sound like an accredited program, or better yet it sounds like a post-grad program.

You can do an arch/engineering if you don't know which path you want to go but most of those programs aren't NAAB accredited so you will need to go to a state to do an internship.

Not immediately but soon after I graduated. I traveled to another state so it took me a while to get settled down and find something.

It's got like a hip little community college feel to it, but you see all these little bodies walking around and you realize it's for kids.

My question - where does the work of the architect end and the work of the construction/civil engineer or interior designer take over? I always wondered if there was a clear line of demarcation between each of these roles.

Construction is easy, architects create the documents for a contractor to use to build. Civil engineers, they deal with utilities and site grading. Interior designer is a bit tricky. Some architects can do interior design, but an interior designer would help with interior materials and colors.

What kinda projects?

Do you start from an engineer's schematic, by working with an engineer, or by giving the engineer your design and they figure it out from there?

Bigger projects typically will last longer. I would say 4-5 projects per year.

We usually come up with a design and work with engineers to resolve the design and create construction documents for a contractor to build.

I would take them to create architecture around them or on vacations you take. Seeing some of Calatrava's work is definitely inspiring. There's great architecture everywhere. I would say some inherent skills would be being creative, drawing, sketching and appreciation of the built environment. When I was a kid I always looked at spaces I was in and wondered how it could be better for the users of the space.

Black architects to check out
David Adjaye
Phil Freelon
Francis Kéré
Paul Revere Williams
Jack Travis

just to name a few

Yes I am African American.
Good question. Since there aren't a lot of black architects the movement isn't as big. There are some "afro-centric" designs out there. So yes but the movement isn't as big as the other arts.

I will say I always found spaces to be fascinating... how people moved through spaces, and why certain things were in the built environment. It really came down to playing with legos and lincoln logs and being able to create spaces. I remember sitting down and designing/drawing my own mall spaces and wondering how people would enjoy or not enjoy their experiences.

Great questions:

1. My Favorite project would be an elementary school I worked. It was my first project that I took all the way through the planning process to see it actually built. I enjoyed being able to work in the school district and see spaces that we talked about being used by the kids. The first day of school was so awesome to see the students' faces light up when they exclaimed "Is this really the school I get to go to?"

2. Most impressive: I would say a 200K SF high school with active phasing. It was a complicated project in which the students were still on campus while the new school was being built and integrating the new with the existing building. Being able to work with so many stakeholders and complications made it really satisfying to see it completed.

Interesting. Geomancy doesn't really come up but I can see how some planners may use this study of laying out various buildings on a campus or a city. Feng shui comes up more in my practice than Geomancy.

>2. Are you familiar Diébédo Francis Kéré? What's your
>take on his work?

Very.... I love his work and the projects he has seen completed. They are very simple but very powerful and are serving a bigger cause than a lot of design projects. I'm curious to see how his fame will affect his practice.

>3. Do you have the plans for your dream house drawn up already?
>If so and it hasn't been built already does it go through

I don't have plans. It's funny to see the work I've done in school and to laugh at my thought process then versus now. If I did have plans I'm sure I would have to change them constantly, with design it's always a moving target on what piques my interest and taste

Nope, I've never designed one. I'm more in the commercial sector. I see some prefabricated for around $5-$10K but it really depends on how you want to construct it.

Not everyone wants to become licensed to practice architecture for whatever reasons they have. I would say there is room for all of us. Some people just want to be more theoretical or just design a small portion of a building/space.
To me, if you have the education and experience you might as well take the licensing exams to get a license somewhere. You can always pay money and pass the cost to reinstate the license on to a client.
