This is my first Play Station. Have they always been this much more “lux” feeling than the Xbox???
I’m blown away by the fact that sound is coming out of the controller enhancing the already spectacular surround sound immersion…
Even the way this thing boots up is just an experience to enjoy!

compared to Xbox. graphically they've always been similar tough. Xbox a little better than PS2. PS3 a little better than 360 but it's an absolute bitch to develop for.
Sony has had them beat a little on PS4 and PS5 but generally the games are going to look about the same.

The whole UI experience though, Sony has always been way ahead

The Series S is a netbook on that Lance Armstrong. It' s basically an emulation productivity device that plays console games.

Those official headphones are trash, HALO is trash, and most of their games are PC leftovers.

Meanwhile we having fun in the first world. We have games for everybody unlike that proud boy genre on the other side. All of the consoles are premium including the handhelds.

the mic and speaker in the controller is the worst thing that's ever been done since the original xbox duke controller.

it's useless in all games, and dumbass playstation players leave the mics on so you can hear their smoke alarm beeping and every conversation happening in their house, not to mention the echo of the game

Be diminished after the newness wears off….

But my kids got into Sackboy with the quickness and I don’t see them backing off it anytime soon. They never took to any Switch or Xbox games like this…

Because of the gimmicks like blowing on it from AstroBot I guess?

The weirdest part is how it affects the controller - I always have to remember to shut it off when I play Gran Turismo ‘cause the rumble is actually subdued when the mic is on. Why!

I’ve always liked it in games like GTA though. It’s gimmicky but immersive in a way that doesn’t hurt anybody. If you’re primarily a headphone player I get it too though since games aren’t always good about rerouting those sounds and you miss stuff.

except it picks up voices, so if someone close by is talking, or worse, if the person is using TV speakers (and they always are) whenever a character says something in the game, boom it picks it up and transmits at full volume.

but the speed of the Xbox interface combined with the ease of quickly getting to my games is what I prefer. I'm still shocked Playstation hasn''t made a quick grid view of your games instead of this one sliding blade. It's ok if you own a handful of games but I got damn near everything so it becomes annoying.

A couple minutes to install. So far so good.

...but i'm just going to get the 2TB this week

how do you plan to swap the games from the 2TB drive to the 4TB one if and when you buy one?

I think I saw one on sale on Best Buy for almost more than the price for the PS5 itself. It would be cool to have that much storage on deck, but that's a pretty steep price point IMO. Luckily, the game library for the PS5 is still kinda bare so that storage isn't a deep need for me to go beyond the 2 TB drive that I copped months ago.

basically any drive works just fine.

at least so far, there are no games that do anything, even ratchet & clank, that literally the slowest nvme ssds we could find couldn't handle

also prices have come down a ton

the xbox has the advantage on ease, you can just pop that shit in and out at will, but the cost on ps5 ssds is hard to beat

But right now I have Bugsnax, Chess Ultra, Cult of the Lamb, Diablo 3, Disco Elysium, Elden Ring, Gran Turismo 7, GTA 5, Hades, Journey, Madden 23, MLB The Show 22, Tetris Connected, Stanley Parable Deluxe AND Yakuza 5 installed on my base PS5 hard drive.


So any lurkers who might stumble on this thread in a few months looking for some gift ideas, the hard drive space itself isn't all that restricting unless you need those titanic games on there, because yea - GT7, GTA5, MLBTS22 and Madden 23 do account for basically 2/3 of my hard drive. But I'd also say hardcore car tinkering and baseball aren't can't miss must haves for most kids.


Though now I remember Destiny 2 is probably bigger than GT and MLB combined. Any dweeb knows Call of Duty is. Fortnite is 40GB. Add FIFA to some combo of GTA Online, Warzone, Fortnite and 2K/Madden you're probably cooked. God forbid Destiny 2 even enters the picture, let alone Final Fantasy XIV or Marvel's Avengers. So many things for kids to get hooked on these days, so little hard drive space.


...That aside, one or two "forever" games and a handful of other more specific games that'll get finished and deleted for one reason or another, the hard drive space seems fine. It's the download cap from my ISP I find myself having to worry about.

Xbox is what I’m used to but PS4/5 is decent enough for me to not feel stupid for having it for a small amount of games. If the Spider-Man games hadn’t been PS exclusive, I would’ve stayed content with never owning a PS console.

I platinum'd that game AND played the campaign three times over, but unless you're talking about the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man side activity stuff I'm not sure what you're talking about. Every activity in the game is on a checklist and once you've done it it's done (though you can turn some extra challenges on for some of the combat arenas for funsies).


And in any case, this sounds like the Gang Wars system in GTA: San Andreas, the Uruk refreshes in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, every aspect of every FromSoft game since Demon's Souls, the Blood Moon system of Breath of the Wild...


Obviously I loved the game and you didn't, but this complaint isn't unique to Spider-Man. For what it's worth, I say the exact same thing about Breath of the Wild - I really dislike that I can go on what feels like a grand adventure to discover a really cool weapon, only for it to break or the world to reset and place another one in the same spot - so, y'know, nothing works for everybody all the time!

i havent owned a gaming console since Sega Genesis, but hallmate had N64 and we'd play Goldeneye for hours in college..the whole 1-on-1, hunting each other down was always great times/laughs---so does PS5 have something like that?

Up until a couple weeks ago I hadn't powered on my PS5 in about 2 months. Finally turned it on to play through FF7 Remake, and therefore haven't turned my Series X on since. When something comes back out for the Series X, it'll switch again.

Main issue with it is space, 4 to 5 games is all that fit on it. Have to spend another 400 on a solid state drive for more which kinda sucks

Halo and GOW weren't in my bag. FFVII and Gran Turismo were. Give me the games I like and I'm there, and the PS had more for me than the XB. Everything else is just brand loyalty like the blue/green bubble wars.

It only mattered to me when I was heavy into SFIV. Playing folks on either machine and using a fightstick was a pain, so I dual modded one to work on PS3/360. That was fun. Really wanted to dual mod a RB/GH controller, but never got to it.

Trying to resolve that issue had me on that site when they were having a flash sale. I said "fuggit" at this point, even if it was that Horizon bundle.

The PS5 fell in my lap late last year. A buddy sent me an amazon link, it worked, and I felt like 'well shit, I may as well'.

After that, I tried for roughly a week to get the new XBox to get it over with. I joined some app that gave 'here dey go' updates when XBoxes were about to be become available at some store. I was flying out somewhere and I got an update right when I was getting off of a plane that XBoxes were available at the Best Buy right by my house. Cart, checkout, picked it up once I got back in town.

And now, they sit around barely getting played like all of my other stuff cuz I'm old, busy, tired, and busy.

I don't appreciate the lack of folders at all. It's bullshit really. How else can I put all my shooting games in a folder called 'blickies' or 'gats'?

I hear that the folders are coming back and are available in a beta update? I need to check into that bigtime. Hell, they had folders on PS3..what gives, Sony!?

Yeah, they call it something else but you can group your games now. In need to go through the process of doing it now.

It lacks adequate pedestrians and looks boring. They clearly spent their development budget on 'splosions, particle effects, and character customization.

I'm like come on man. It's been almost 2 years. One of the reasons I seldom watch media on the PS5 besides no DV for shows/movies.

Granted I own a pretty affordable but no less 4K capable TCL set, so maybe the more distinguished sets do a better job of this, but a recent PS5 update that allowed me to manually activate Game Mode was a literal game changer for me, both because it's made it easier to get right into a session but also because I just don't use the PS5 as a media hub the same way I did the PS4 since this TV seems to always read it as gaming.

Before, I had to launch a game then manually turn my TV fully off and on some random number of times to get the input lag right. Now, just like with PS4, I just have to remember to go into the settings and turn it off then back on. Other than the fact I have to do it each and every time I go to do a little gaming, it's a way better experience. BUT.

But, again, after I do that this TV considers the PS5's signal a gaming signal no matter what. So I never really think to watch HBO/etc. from it the way I did PS4 because the PS5 OS, or whatever I should blame, can't or won't tell the TV I'm watching a movie from my gaming console. It makes everything look like a daytime soap opera and I HATE that look - on my absolute nerd shit, it's why I LIKE most cinematic games to be 30fps instead of 60 - So I just use the TV apps mostly, though I prefer the PS5 to the TV remote.

I'm just glad these Roku apps are basically mirrors of what's been on Playstation, 'cause I remember a few years ago it could seem like you were using an entirely different service depending on whether your desktop, phone, console, TV or streaming hub was opening the storage unit.
