season 3 was shockingly good, they took the premise and took it to a place I didn't expect. the surrealism was perfect.

Too bad the show isn't set up for syndication so everybody can get paid, but then the art would suffer...but I could be way wrong, maybe it will be

Last season was fantastic. I loved that the writers explored more ideas.

Based on the trailer I figure this will be just the orig. cast,
but yeah...more anthology stuff please.

Especially when she starting appearing in Darius' rearview mirror. I thought she was going to be a one time character at the start of the episode.
The fact the she kept popping up everywhere with supernatural ability was hilarious.

I know for sure she killed that girl they left in that parking lot.

Not that police interactions are all that great, but I’d rather explain what’s going on to them than somebody like Dwight from the office thinking they’re a high ranking law enforcement officer as a volunteer.

Definitely got lost in the parking deck about 3 times, before I started paying attention to what I was parking near.

-Greenbriar Rich’s FTW!
-Finding/seeing people you used to kick it with at Atlantic Station is so accurate and specific.
-Going that far to ruin the lady from the airport’s life was magnifique, and I’m glad Earn felt like shit for doing it.
-A posthumous scavenger hunt seemed like something MF Doom would do.

I loved the S3 weird shit, but these are off to a way better start.

When Al said "he died three months ago and they just released a statement" that made me think about him dying on Halloween and the statement about his death came on New Year's Eve. Plus he lived in Atlanta.

In response to Reply # 0

I liked episode 2 much more than ep 1 because it was more realism.

Seasons 1 and 2, there was surreal moments sprinkled in.
But it was mainly realistic. Earn being homeless and dealing with relationship issues. Al balancing fame. Van trying to pass a drug test. Darius selling a dog.

The first episode made the surreal the main event. Wheelchair Karen who can track down an air fryer anywhere. The haunted mall where exes are banished to. The mall emergency exit that leads to Al on his dead rapper scavenger hunt.

Episode 2 was more grounded in real life like season 1 and 2. Even though Earn's extreme vindictiveness borders on surreal lol

I didn't see the entire interview, but I saw a clip of Donald Glover on LeBron's HBO Babershop show. In the clip, he mentioned his primary motivation for the Awaken My Love album was to spite someone that said he couldn't make a top charting album, if memory serves me correct.

I'm sure someone will post up the Youtube clip below this response to correct me if I'm wrong.

I reveled in that shit. I can't imagine any black person that has suffered the kind of petty indignity he went through doesn't fantasize about doing what he did.

And if it cost you relatively nothing to pull off, why not?

It was also nice to get an explanation for what the fuck happened in Princeton.

That's a REALLY fucked up way to lose a scholarship. I see why he was so ruderless for so long. Nigga was depressed and had no resources to deal with it.

This damn near could've been one of those midseason finales that shows will do now.

I loved it so much. The therapy sessions. The filling in the blank on Princeton did something for me. Thinking about how people treated him earlier in the show even after all of that hurts in a different way now too. And thinking of how that shit could impact you basically forever? Yeah...its a lot. And it makes sense that he'd be ready to roll out on all of those folks now that he can...especially Paper Boi, who he seems to be at least kinda 'over'.

I didn't 'know' it was Earn until he gave the lady the money.

Seeing crazy ass Tracy being crazy ass Tracy was wonderful. And yes, it let me think a 'reveal' of some sort was coming. But, I didn't think about it. I didn't even get that Earn was the guy when the lady said that she worked at the airport during the whole 'the service dog can't come in here' exchange. That's the hint I regret missing the most.

And real talk, I've been thinking about therapy for a while. There's enough things that I have filed under 'it sucks but get over it' that I probably need some work on to ACTUALLY be 'over' versus mind-fucking myself to 'act like I'm over it' when maybe I'm really not (work stuff, parents stuff, friendship stuff, regrets on decisions, etcetera).

When they stayed in some chicks apartment to do a show, then the next morning, she had thrown all their shit out on the quad...and Earn's laptop was missing.

remember how we went berserk and started pounding on the door and screaming to get his laptop?

in hindsight, he was definitely triggered from the Princeton incident...the writing and character development on this show is so excellent.

He had to pay for all those actors and he had to pay to use that office space for that fake literary agent meeting I would imagine. I suppose he's doing that well for himself as an agent that the considerable cost didn't bother him.

As potential spiteful an individual I am (I'm more so someone that harbors grudges rather than look to outwardly try to spite folks on purpose), it was pretty cool how ultimately the 'victory' was an empty one that only Earn was able to celebrate. No one else in that bar cared about ruining that woman's life but him.

i'd imagine a lot of it comes from that episode (S1?) where Darius offers to turn his cell phone cash at pawn shop into $2K (via the sword, pitbull & pitbull breeding trading scheme)--and when Earn realizes at the end of that whole day, he still needs to wait months for the dogs to breed to get that money, and Darius winds up offering him his cell phone to get his original cash still that day?

(and then Darius comes through on his promise of the money a few episodes later, way after Earn probably forgot about it)

Darius is one of my favorite tv characters ever

It was good storytelling.

I was confused while watching (why was the Agent's secretary so rude? what does this woman have to do with anything? no way kids could be that mean and teachers didn't intervene?) and was well paid off by the ending.

Also think its a super relevant to internet cultural fights we have today.

and the fallout/consequence that comes along with it.

this is i think the 3rd time he's hit this sort of thing. first with the mobbing of the tone-deaf asian girl at the party, then with liam neeson.

i don't know exactly what's Glover's intent but we purposely don't see what happens at the airport... and i realize the ep doesn't work if we did, but we do spend a good amount of time inside her world, and see her hopes, struggles, then her life destroyed. We see his friends being like damn, dude...

also i assumed she had a crush on her neighbor but given her airport persona, not so certain. dude better watch his back.

and i see why her friend didn't believe in her writing.

I think she did, on some level, but she’s also the type of person that can go from crush to hate if feelings aren’t reciprocated. She’d probably call the cops on him for something arbitrary if he continues to ignore her or if they have a bad interaction. People are weird like that.

“I need more therapy”

shit had me rolling. Earn is sick af, lol..

In response to Reply # 0

I've seen a few times on here and twitter folks holding out and thinking that maybe MF Doom's death announcement was an elaborate hoax that he was setting up for a future album. Can't say I am 100% sure he is truly dead.

And if we still thinking the show is deep, I guess the idea is that Earn and Van were lost in dating purgatory and Earn almost left her there but they left together, foreshadowing that their relationship is going to improve?

I’m talking about in terms of what is presented on-screen that we know happens to him across the 4 seasons, like this, burning up gas on a citywide scavenger hunt, getting jerked in the poker game, and getting his phone stolen by a person standing behind him last season.

At face value (on-screen presentation), the lil YWA seminar didn’t go into what to do when the YWA dies, despite real-world logic saying “just go get another one”.

to go to further his career, IMO
I thought to myself, what does D’ represent to Ern
No way any agent would risk their career on signing D’ off a hairdresser’s co-sign
IMO, it was supposed to be ridiculous, especially for people familiar with D’s career and long hiatus
Ern literally said 5 minutes later…what is D’?
I found it hilarious, especially the notches on the wall
D’ symbolized Ern’s willingness to sacrifice everything to further his career
It wasn’t supposed to be literal, IMO.

he gets out of that fucked up meeting by saying he thinks he can get D'Angelo, which they might not have even really expected of him, but he ends up spending days in that room lol committed to trying to sign him. Like sitting in that meeting would be shitty but it wouldn't have lasted that long! There are other angles but it's funny as an office joke almost.

The exaggerated D'angelo seclusion is funny, I really went back and forth on whether they might have got him lol the fact that he's playing videogames and the only thing we kinda know about him outside his album releases recently was his RDR2 enjoyment was cute. Was it a network of D'Angelos or just this one dude?

last night's episode was a dud? Main reason being that there's no emotional connection or investment to Earn's family, at least on my part, to truly care about what happened last night.

It was somewhat cool the show brought Kat Williams back though.

I suppose it was also somewhat cool that there were no clear cut right or wrong persons in what went down since it did appear the grandfather wasn't totally aware of what was going down when Earn's mother 'kidnapped' him.

My fam going through this exact same thing including the light skinned aunt controlling my grandfather, and my own father telling me last week he felt threatened by some teenagers messing with him on the train.

So its a gift and curse. If you can relate then it hit hard, if not then it probably did feel like a dud.

This was so beautiful. And I'm just old enough now to where I can remember my dad noping out AND I've already started noping out on certain stuff and I haven't even been married for a decade yet.

I'm in this line. It was a great ep for me.

And the 'disconnect'? I felt it, understood it, and I have lived with it at various times with various groups of people, family and otherwise.

I'm so glad this show exists and is willing to put this type of stuff 'out there'.

My favorite episodes have always been the ones that really speak to authentic black experiences. Like the prison episode, the first Katt Williams episode, and this one.

It just felt like that could have been any Southern Black Family Drama.

When it started it made me aware we don't see nothing about Earn's family on the show. I also get the vibes from Donald Glover he's the type of brother who is a bit embarrassed by his family. That came through in the episode, but he authentically addressed it and acknowledged it.

If you felt no emotional connection to Earn's family this far in the ep, this episode kind of explains why. This was good Earn backstory to me, just like the therapy episode.

I think the backstory eps are good but I do also feel like the show is running out of time, if there is to be some resolution/evolution for Earn. I feel like they are setting up Earn getting back with Van, but I hope they have proper build up for it given so few episode left.

It was so beautiful to see it laid out in that way. And real talk, cute women at kiosks have been doing in dudes of all ages in the mall for like..forever. I remember buying some fingernail files, lotions and shit from a very fine young lady. And I was like 25, in shape, and running into the mall right quick to buy some clothes. I was looking upside her too hard, she saw me/called me on it, and it was over from there. Knowing what I know now, I should’ve legit tried to holler. Instead, I got more physical contact than was necessary, she got me to buy some files and random nail shit (that I eventually used the hell out of), and that was that.

And when she came with the secret hat!? That shit was too accurate. I loved it.

Those damn kiosk people are savage. These days they walk like 30 yards up and down getting people.

I treat them like the homeless when I have no change.

First time a woman did it, I was like “yup, still got it..” then she hit me with the sales pitch and burst my bubble

seen a disproportionate amount of them (men and women) over the last decade or so working kiosks (hair accessories, mini helicopters, etc). coulda been random but that particular casting had me thinking there was more to it i dont know about.

Yep. The one who got me was something like that. Thick accent. Thick other stuff too. But not in a surgical/model/overly sculpted way. It was more in a southern/woke up like this one day and it didn't go away type way. AKA my favorite. I was enthralled.

Highlights:
The look on Earn's mom's face when she skrtted off with grandpa lol

Earn's dad instantly going from pure joy to terror once he realized he stayed at the mall too long. That whole scene had me feeling anxious.

Auntie: "you see....they in EGYPT"

The MacDonalds straight lock up the seating there from like 3-5pm to keep the kids from hanging out and acting up. They got a lady working there I swear must be a school teacher because she is so good at talking to the kids and keeping them settled (like the old teacher from Abbot Elementary) and she does it like its her full time job

BUT

This episode made it wildly clear for anyone who was, is, or has ever fronted. The getup with the boots? Clay Davis may as well could’ve been a static graphic at the bottom of my screen like the ‘toastyyyyy!’ Dude from Mortal Kombat. Of course, he’d be saying ‘shiiiiiiiiiiiied’ for the whole episode..low in the background..even during commercials.

This episode is pretty wild though. Almost feels personal more so than criticizing Tyler Perry's art.

Must be pretty liberating to be comfortable enough to burn that Tyler Petty bridge so openly.

reminds me of the first episode of Meet the Paynes.

Wife and I were like “is his wife really going to be on crack?”

all while watching them flub lines, stutter and trip over shit and clearly give no fucks about reshooting scenes. Heard they were pumping out a ridiculous amount of episodes to get syndication in record time.

i even started second guessing myself, is it really just 'a grit' in some situations??? lol

i wonder if there will be an explanation for the really far out things that have happened in the show or if we just gotta explain it ourselves.

how he just BODIED the last 10 minutes or so of this episode

This felt like more of a character out of Community or his old sketch show than anything we've seen before in Atlanta

This EP reminded me of the Teddy Perkins episode but way less morbid

which is itself hilarious, because BET or NAACP would not EVER give them an award for *this* episode and risk angering Mr Chocolate.

Do y’all find it FUNNY. like laugh out loud funny. The show is clever, and delivers some thought provoking content. But I feel like they abandoned the comedic value of the show in favor of compelling story telling like 2 seasons ago. Seasons 1-2, I felt comfortable telling people Atlanta was a comedy sitcom everyone should check for.

I can’t describe it that way anymore. If I put a friend on to the show, they might get “Get Out” or the Black Eyes Wide Shut, or some other random shit that you weren’t mentally prepared to tune in for when you signed up for some belly laughs.

the comedy is a bit understated this season for sure. and there's a lot of subtle shit. more often than not i'm looking at the screen w/ my jaw dropped.

The “Target” being looted was actually the Macy’s/Rich’s at Greenbriar. Just internally hilarious when I can pinpoint where they are.

The killer wheelchair lady.

Like I said above, I’ve been lost in the Atlantic Station parking deck multiple times.

It’s funny on a very specific note.

Yep. I let them write the show. I watch the show and look super hard at Van every chance I get. I don't really 'expect' anything per se. It works for me and Van is sprinkling the steaks/Marv Albert 'YES'/John Madden 'BOOM!'/Mike Breen 'BANG!' good looking to me so I'm doing great.

Yes, I want to know 'what happens to them' ultimately. But I trust them to tell me what they want me to know when they want me to know it. Like them waiting the whole season to make it clear that Earn was living in a storage unit...excellent!

and there is nothing wrong with that..

It started with an obvious story and slowly turned into a show where you can turn it on, not watch any other episodes and still be entertained. There will be some “wtf.. wow, that’s crazy.. what is this show called again and whats it about?” moments and if you go back you will probably be like “this a whole different ass show” lol

Atlanta to me is a show where every week I’m like “where they going and what they doing”

but the real joy is watching it with my wife who doesn’t follow the show. Her reactions are comical and confirm that what he is doing works.. just dont ask questions or demand clear answers. Just watch it and enjoy the madness.

the barber episode was the only one were I prolly cracked a rib laughing out loud.

that shit was gold.

and the comedian that played the barber was like “I thought I would have a few lines and I show up and he’s like.. the whole episode is about you!”

and that’s Atlanta. Little slices of moments in time and turning what could be 5 minutes into 45 minutes. Like I said above, its like a Black ass Seinfield now for me.

prolly smoking weed and saying “remember that time when..”

and then they dive deeper and turn it into an episode.

Like I kept waiting for them in the first season to return to the gun charges from the first episode.

Now I enjoy it as an anthology series knowing I am going to like more stories more than others. It was also a good strategy to release two seasons so close together because I think if they waited for ever to drop a 10 episode season I think the stakes would be that much higher for every episode to be perfect.

Black people are not a monolith and there are plenty of black folks who are underserved in art and in media.

I appreciate that I can go to a show like this and not have to expect or want slapstick shit. There's layers to this shit that go beyond just "was it funny enough".

We do that with too much shit and miss out on stuff.

I’m a sucker for spoof songs. And the way he finally got him on the song was too perfect for this show. And he just had the track at the ready to play for him in the car!? Bwahahahhahahahhahahaha!

I took the ep you’re talking about as more of a ‘you’re hot enough but don’t think your shit is gonna last forever ever. Cuz it is not’.

How are you a rich rapper (anywhere really but ESPECIALLY in Atlanta) and you don't have a gun handy?

He heard a strange noise in the crib and he leaves. No gun in the living room or kitchen

And then goes to a.......shopping mall? Where you still don't have one?

Solid ep overall but that part just didn't add up to me

V: “I don’t want you to love me as her mother”

ugh, do you really believe that?

I know people want to hear when they need to hear but did his answer really convince you or has his actions convinced you and you just needed words to solidify it?

I understand that it's a balance and appreciate it, as I said. I think the show does a great job of covering all bases in that regard.

I just don't think 3 more somber episodes would be in line with the show's overall tone and feel, is all I was saying. They can interject some of those moments with the regular weirdness/avante garde funny shit like they normally do, IMO.

But I don't mean to overstate it - I don't have any expectations for the final eps. And I know that whatever direction they go, they'll nail it. Was just saying I don't *think* they would go in that direction for the rest of the season.

I hear you but part of the reason relationships are so hard is because of insecurities. It's refreshing (it's a TV show, I know) when a couple can be straightforward and honest about what they both know damn well deep down is the truth. The worst relationships I ever had (and I imagine I'm not alone) were those where my sig other (or me, at times) had this fairytale idea of love and relationships and expected that I'd never even glance in another girl's direction again. Or talk about past relationships. Or consider the future with objectivity instead of blind idealism.

Anyway more specific to the episode, I actually think what he said helped to convince her and I thought he said it in the right tone and worded it well. I'd have had your reaction had he been like "girl you know I got money and can get whoever I want but I want you" or some alpha shit like that lol.

and i'm so glad they didn't write it that way because how they wrote it is what candid, truthful conversations look like. people who have the courage to be vulnerable talk like that. people who want to truly know other people LISTEN like that. i love that they showed that.

i see what Donald is doing in this last season...he's giving us How to Do Therapy, How to Do Family, How to Do Relationships...basically How to Mature as an Adult.

The "Van Episode" from last season was rushed, and relied on gimmicks and surreal stuff to tell Van's story and I ultimately didn't buy it. Didn't connect to anything real (all of a sudden we learn Van is suicidal?!?! Where did that come from)

I love the bare bones, 4 characters, all set outdoors episode. The most expensive thing in the episode was probably that Sade song. When it started my wife's thought it was a strange song choice. By the end it was clear why they chose that song.

It was good to see Van and Earn getting along. But it was also clear that they were being ultra polite. Trying to do the best thing for their daughter. The episode felt sad and somber. You ever been out with someone with the plan of breaking up with them at some point on that date? That's what it felt like.

I'm like Legs and I kinda hated what Earn led with in the tent. It ain't Jodeci to lead with I can have anyone I want. But as I thought about it was real. The problem with professing love like 90s R&B lyrics is that it can seem shallow and fake and just the things you are supposed to say. Nothing we've seen in the show to date suggest Earn would talk like that.

Van did a good job of showing her vulnerability from their last confrontation (I played the table tennis scene for my wife after this episode to remind her when they last spoke on it). She made Earn work. Earn it. I think a lot of women would have been happy just that he asked, or wanted to be a good dad and have a family. She was in her right to want more. Where she was coming from made perfect sense.

For the entire season them having a child seemed a throwaway. Never saw her, never really impacted the story, this season is the first season she had lines. I think Glover didn't have children when the show started. The little girl barely had 10 lines, but she was centered. She didn't do much this episode but that smile at the end was the whole thing. Kids can feel parents dynamics and you can be polite as you want around them, but they know when something is off. Her characters quietness and somberness through out the season was by design. And her smile at end was a sign a corner had been turned in Earn and Van's relationship.

That Sade song though. That Best of Sade use to be my go to SMASH CD so it was just a great choice for me. Earn was literally on his knees for Van in that tent. Love is definitely stronger than pride.

Yes it was a slow episode. But this relationship is central to the show and they needed to take their time to resolve (just like they need to take their time to deal with Paperboi dealing with his mom's death). They did what they needed to do.

Definitely a change of pace. I think it was good for the story but it probably could have been done better. I also agree that it could have worked better as the final episode.

I think that I will always rewatch seasons 1, 2, and 4. It’s some of the best TV I’ve ever seen.

Season 3 is like Nastradamus. I’ll be good with just ignoring that it ever happened.

Slow paced “breather” episodes can be hurt by commercials when watching live IMO. But when you can skip the commercials it really helps.

I don’t know….I always like slow episodes when it’s characters that I like just talking. Glad that surreal, weird shit hasn’t taken over the show this season. Sad that it’s almost over, but am really looking forward to the last 3 episodes.

..this show is going for the jugular.

Reading some of the criticism expressed in this thread might have you believe we're watching completely different shows. That's the beauty of interpretation. Say what you want about their approach, they recreated the mood of the score damn-near line for line. If you've ever truly spent time alone with your thoughts and this song, it's almost impossible to ignore.

•style
•character development
•depth
•pacing
•range
•writing

This series has everything. Well-timed cameos sprinkled about, and as previously stated: not one line wasted. They've taken chances some clearly wouldn't, and still nailed it. Intelligent, witty, uncompromising, and sometimes uncomfortable art.

All of this in a sitcom.

I'm in this line. I'm excited for the last 3 episodes.

Mostly, I just trust these folks to finish this show without feeling like they need to baby anyone with how they get to 'the end' they want to have. There could be time jumps, flashbacks, or both and I wouldn't be shocked at all.

I know I have basically no expectations, so I see it like I'm set to be pleased. AKA I'm not thinking 'oh, Earn and Van better make it'. Or 'They better not kill Paper Boi'.

Isn't Donald Glover technically a part of the Disney brand as result of him working or having worked on one of the Star Wars movies or shows? My memory could be off, but I vaguely remember him missing time for the show because he was filming a Star Wars show or movie.

Not saying this wasn't an interesting episode, but I'm not sure if he was taking Disney on per say.

The timing of this with Black Panther II coming out soon is pretty funny, especially with the huge amount of adverts for the movie.

follow the show

my wife watched with me and thought it was a real documentary so I didn’t tell her it was Atlanta

“who ordered the white rice” had us crying..

“he went to a cookout, did the research, he said the wrong thing and got fucked up but he’s going to draw better”

and when they found his shoes and it was in the shape of Goofy’s shoes.. lmao.

shit was still boring overall but my wife’s reaction was hilarious. When she asked about the documentary and I told her it was Atlanta… lmao.

just in about the most roundabout way possible

made fun of for "acting white" growing up
got recruited into 30 Rock as a writer via a diversity program
making "the blackest movie ever" in Goofy = him making Atlanta

also it's just funny as hell to see the headcanon of goofy being a black movie actually brought to the screen like this.

if Goofy is the blackest Disney movie why wouldn’t Glover think he made the Blackest TV show ever? lol

Not sure what it is but I think given who we thought Glover was before Atlanta this show is black af.

Still remember DG saying he was shocked when The Weeknd were like “we didn’t know if you were a nigga nigga” when they were on tour together. DG was like.. I’m from Atlanta and these dudes from Canada are questioning my Blackness.

makes me wonder if it motivated him to make Atlanta Black af.

Is Goofy Movie the blackest most underrated Disney movie of all time!

Almost reads like Glover used it for the episode. I don’t think I have ever watched it but every time Goofy and Max have a story on a Disney movie its always touching and shows Goofy being a great dad.

I mean.. check this joint out. Max’s GF got the Halle cut.

Given how divergent they have been to a certain extent from the main characters and added with the fact these are the last batch of episodes, so I'm sure standards are higher for the episodes to deliver. The phrase mailing it in conveys a level a laziness or lack of effort in my eyes which I don't think is fair. I can easily see why folks wouldn't like these last two for sure.

I JOKED that they'd kill Paperboi. Shit got dark for a minute on that safe farm! And duh, I love that Earn is like 'Be careful, farms is dangerous man!' AFTER all of the shit Paperboi went through.

Hope the whole crew is in the finale though. Those are always the best episodes.

But if they’re going to have an episode with only one main character in it - I generally like Alfred’s episodes the best.

Maybe a bit of a stretch to make a full episode out of it. I liked that he actually got a "safe" farm but I just kept waiting for more. I did start expecting for him to die, that would have had a different impact. Watching S3 and early S4 I thought there was a big vision that they would circle back to and hit us with towards the end. Doesn't really seem that way anymore. I thought last weeks episode was actually going to tie together some things.

I feel like this and the camping episode would have worked better if there was a b-story on each episode that they would cut to.

"Wyeth’s neighbor Anna Christina Olson inspired the composition, which is one of four paintings by Wyeth in which she appears. As a young girl, Olson developed a degenerative muscle condition—possibly polio—that left her unable to walk. She refused to use a wheelchair, preferring to crawl, as depicted here, using her arms to drag her lower body along. “The challenge to me,” Wyeth explained, “was to do justice to her extraordinary conquest of a life which most people would consider hopeless.”"

He got what he wanted from his career in the end. He won a grammy and is doing arena shows. Financially set.

There was always more to Al as a character than aspiring rapper. My favorite Al moments are his facial expressions showing the ridiculousness of the situations. It felt like he was breaking the fourth wall at times and connecting directly with us the viewer. "Do you see what's going on here" lol

In the end, the thing he wanted most was to be left alone and feel safe in his own skin. The wide open spaces of the farm gives him that opportunity.

this has been the most important t.v. experience for me since the Wire.

exactly!!!

a really poignant moment for me, which was truly the whole cruxx of his journey, was the moment when he answered Earn's call. Remember, he'd been avoiding that call before...not interested in being checked on or bothered etc etc

But in that moment, he wanted to take the call...to get help or to exclaim about what he'd just been through...but then once he heard Earn's voice, he decided different.

in that split second he decided that he was fine..that he'd survived and that he was choosing this life. that there would probably not be another day worse than that one.. he didn't want Earn's help, sympathy, pity or concern. He no longer needed to be "managed" or rescued...he chose that in that moment.

It was so perfect. He downplayed everything...and then the next day (or whenever), he was able to enjoy Earn's company by phone but still insist that he's good...they were connecting in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. Al was finally truly happy.

In the last 3 episodes, 2 were shot almost completely outdoors (which is much cheaper to shoot) with 2 or 3 actors and one was a fake documentary that looks like they literally shot in the FX breakroom.

I guess I am just glad they got a final season. Is there a TV show casts with more actors in Marvel/Star Wars Movies?

Besides starring him, this was a very Al-type episode. Dude is a loner. I think the big takeaway is that dude doesn't know how, or is incapable of, asking for help. Hits for black men.

It would be a great bottle episode, hate to think of it as the send off for his character.

The season started with the gang altogether, I hope it ends with the same.

Donald Glover ending things by warning against accepting "salty and fried" depictions of Black culture, or approximations of Black culture created by white people. That's very much in keeping with his world view throughout the series and in interviews.

Plus, you finally got some hints into Darius' background, and parts of why he is how he is. I'm not even sure if they'd mentioned his last name before this episode.

And I honestly don't think there would be anywhere to go with another season. Assuming all of this was "real," (which wasn't really the point) Paperboi is successful and at least at some sort of peace, Earn and Van are moving out to LA, and Darius is Darius.

The concept works as a finale but I think it is missing something. I'm split on ending on not knowing what was real and what wasn't. If there are nods to it from the beginning besides the obvious surreal scenes then it hits harder.

I do think with how last season went the concept for this being the end makes sense. I enjoyed most episodes and overall I'm good with it.

He was seeking an escape from that grief all this time. throughout the show we saw Darius sort of float in and out of situations.

All of the moments when he was withdrawn or off in his own world were really him processing the loss of his family. There was a rhyme and reason to what appeared to be a character giving us hilarious non-sequitors.

The quirkiness and just oddball nature of the character is actually tragic in the end. I feel like I got to see the world through Darius' eyes for the first time. And now i want to go back and rewatch through this lens.

I liked it too. I went into it assuming something 'weird' was gonna happen. CHECK!

Finding out some stuff about Darius was great. The way they got to it was fun too. I DO want to go back and watch some other episodes knowing what I 'know' now about these characters.

And I was glad to see them together after the 'separate endings' teases. And they left it open enough that they could come back to it someday and then REALLY piss people off with any kind of 'look ahead' storytelling they go with.

Like someone mentioned, we really did resolution for all the characters and Darius got the backstory and focus that also made him the linchpin for the show.

They really didn't need to explain all the surreal stuff we have seen all series but they did which is kind of a bonus.

But then, I loved the sopranos ending and thought the Insecure ending was too cookie cutter.

Felt like a classic Atlanta episode. A basic slice of life episode.

It got the whole cast back together.

Had some good laughs. Darius punching Sushi Farrakhan reminded me of when Tracy stole on dude at the pajama jam lol

Usually I don't like the it was all a dream endings. They usually feel like cheap cop outs. But I liked it here because it fits a lot of the surrealism sprinkled throughout the show (invisible cars, teddy perkins)

Overall, I was happy with the ending.

I really liked most of them. I really liked them a lot. I guess it could be a feeling of "this isn't what I signed up for." and I get that.

That being said, how often do Black folks get to be the center of absurdist comedy? That shit was ground breaking for me, not to mention our existence in America is by and large absurd. To me what we go through is perfect for this kind of mining.

Darius the only one I didn't get a clear "Happily Ever After" vibe from.

I'm sure Darius, with all his tips and tricks, plus the money he earned while fucking with Paperboi has enough money to set himself up in a middle class neighborhood and not work.

OR

He didn't, and now he has to go back to hustlin'

Shit could be REALLY good. Also, he's the best character to marry to two sides of the series, the absurd and the grounded, because he's both.

AND

He's the character we all know the least about, no to mention widely regarded as everyone's favorite character.

Somebody make this happen.
