I'll be honest, I read those details way back when and pretty much forgot about them by the time the Mark Ronson song came out.

Can't really see this guy as anything but evil. Like - a conviction, one dropped case due to lack of evidence, and now another arrest? Put him under the jail.

In response to Reply # 0

Who says people can’t change.

Really disturbing stuff here, trigger warning.

https://allhiphop.com/news/mystikal-allegedy-prayed-with-victim-before-raping-her/

Rapper Mystikal is being accused of more disturbing behavior if the latest rape allegations against the rap star are proven true.

An unidentified woman claimed Mystikal raped her on July 30th at his Prairieville home because the rapper thought she had stolen a paltry $100 from him.

The rapper became angry over the missing money and allegedly beat the woman up, pulled the braids out of her hair, took her keys and cell phone, and prevented her from leaving his house.

At some point during the evening, Mystikal, who was allegedly high on drugs, held the woman down and raped her in a fit of rage.

The victim claims Mystikal threw rubbing alcohol on her and forced the woman to pray with him. According to prosecutors, the rapper tried to rid the woman of any “bad spirits” in her body and then raped her.

With crime up, I really am interested in hearing who folks want to see go to jail and if people really think no one should go to jail.

Like this dude I read about this week:

https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-woman-beaten-homeless-queens-subway-station-20220927-mla4qiba2fgixj4l7yztjjdfba-story.html

I have no problem saying lock that dude up. Lots of progressives and black activist have a hard time just coming out and saying that.

I feel like the best chance for republicans to win offices in Nov. is based on Dems and liberals/progressives being unwilling to just say, yeak lock that dude up.

so...

I don't know what to tell you about progressives except they cite sources like these (key-word non-violent):

https://www.jurist.org/news/2022/09/new-york-bail-reform-law-effective-not-linked-to-rise-in-crime-data-shows/

"Under the 2019 law, judges must release those charged with misdemeanors or most nonviolent felonies on their own recognizance or under “non-monetary conditions.” However, for all violent felonies and some nonviolent felonies, like sex offenses, judges can still set monetary bail. DCJS data shows that 15 percent of people failed to return for trial in 2019; in 2o21, the figure decreased to 9 percent. For those released on their own recognizance, re-arrest rates decreased from 18 percent to 16 percent by 2021.

In a statement, Supervising Attorney of the LAS Decarceration Project Arielle Reid said the “numbers confirm what we’ve known all along: bail reform has decreased jail populations, kept communities intact and furthered public safety. Any claim to the contrary doesn’t square with reality, and is merely baseless fear mongering.” According to Reid, LAS and other organizations will pursue further reforms in the state legislature’s next session."

I think the fact that you are bringing up conservative talking points e.g. bail reform, progressives soft on crime, and not 80,000 homeless in NYC is the highest since the Great Depression is showing that people are being swayed by the fear-mongering.

https://www.marketplace.org/2022/09/02/homelessness-in-new-york-city-is-being-compounded-by-inflation-high-rents/

Record numbers of homeless people (the ones disproportionately committing random violent acts) but we are not discussing? We are discussing progressives?

Let's ship the homeless to red states! lol

Like its okay to say, "yeah this dude is trash, we should lock him up and throw away the key but let's not loose sight of a bigger issue that is a root cause and can truly address this problem, no support for homeless people".

That's not that hard but what more often happens is rhetoric that sounds like a deflection that doesn't talk about the here and now present case.

And don't get me wrong, there are way to many homeless people on the streets too. Would love to see that dealt with.

But I do think we have to stop talking about these issues as Conservative Talking Points. Because if you talk to most people, these are the things on their mind and how they think about it. For right or wrong, fear mongering or not, it's where the "Conservative Talking Points" are more in sync with how most people think about these issues than the more progressive talking points.

If the news is that a kid who killed his grandma was on the streets to later beat the ish out of a helpless women no politician's response should be, "well this is an outlier and statistically less likely to happen now then it did 5 years ago", people want to hear, and I think rightfully so, "this dude needs to be in jail!"

Ya feel me?

that inflates and sensationalizes crime reporting?

That bail reform is constantly being blamed for the rise in crime in the NY Post, when there is plenty of evidence that that's not the case?

I don't think this is even a real argument

>If the news is that a kid who killed his grandma was on the streets to
>later beat the ish out of a helpless women no politician's response
>should be, "well this is an outlier and statistically less likely to
>happen now then it did 5 years ago", people want to hear, and I think
>rightfully so, "this dude needs to be in jail!"

What if a progressive told you maybe the guy should have never been let out of jail? But let's not be reductionist, and think more police and stricter sentences should be the blanket response when a terrible crime is committed.

If people want to glaze over nuance and just feel empowered by deciding who gets put in jail for how long they should stop trying to get out of jury duty. Otherwise, why would the discussion center around "this guy needs to go to jail"? Where do you think this guy is going?

EDIT: in the context of the above exchange I agree with your original statement and I don't think the questioning by the other poster is productive. tbh I kind of jumped in here, my bad

And I agree that Bail reform is being misrepresented and probably (I really haven't looked at it beyond what you provided) has been a net positive (probably by a wide margin).

That being said, what's the best response to fear mongering? It really isn't listing statistics. It just doesn't work that way.

I don't believe in blanket rules like lock everyone up or free all the jails in attica and send them to Africa. Fixing this will require some degree of nuance and treating every single case individually with some common guiding principals.

But do we have any common guiding principals? That's why I ask this question about specific cases. Mystikal and this guy from the subway seem to me to be easy cases but their are a lot of folks, not the majority admittedly, like Brother Sun who seem unwilling to say even dudes like this should be locked up. I get where it comes from but I think it has the opposite effect of making folks on the left seem unreasonable and impractical and get left out of the convo.

In this particular case, I do believe this guy should never been on the streets based on information yall provided here. He's clearly very troubled . It shouldn't be hard to admit.

i think since he's more sympathetic in this case, he has a different tone, and he's more patient with it.

when he's arguing with right wingers, most of them clearly just get off on getting a rise out of him, he'll still make his arguments, but he's also hurling insults about he fucked their moms and shit like that.

maybe because i find internet combat with strangers exhausting and pointless, i can't understand someone so talented expending that kinda energy on this kinda stuff.

And still have ridiculous crime rates

If the prison system worked, crime would be down, no?

The reason I asked *you* why you're so hard pressed about incarceration is because you keep making "Ok but THIS guy should be imprisoned right?" posts as if you're not in the majority.

I know you think you're special, but negroes get locked up under false premises all the time. This system isn't working no matter how many white fences and degrees you got bro.

The purpose of police abolition isn't to just set everybody free and create anarchy, none of you are slow enough to really believe that in good faith, its to make the living conditions of people humane enough that prisons would be for the most part obsolete.

In response to Reply # 33

He will be locked up for this. And dude has been locked up. He has a hefty rap sheet.
But at what point do you lock him up and throw away the key? Because that is what "lock that dude up" implies, right?

When he was 14 years old and beat his grandmother to death?
When he stabbed his sister in the hand at age 20?
When he did a robbery in 2002?
When he attacked folks with a knife in 2011?
When he kicked in his sisters door a month ago?
After this attack?

Should there be a point where someone is just declared no good and is locked up forever?

That I think the Abolish Prison folks get left out of the conversation because of an unwillingness to acknowledge that some folks should be locked up a long time.

I bet if you looked at his record we'd probably see that no one reviewing him before his releases thought that he was safe to be put back on the street.

He's clearly very troubled and I always wonder how come we don't have a system where we can identify who is an ongoing threat and who is reformed and we won't have to worry about any more. I really wonder is it that hard to figure that out? The current seems to be trash at it or don't seriously do it.

judges, c.o.'s?

You can see how someone with a trespassing offense can actually become a violent offender through conditions like this right?

https://gothamist.com/news/rikers-images-shower-cages-poor-conditions

I do think seeing conditions like the above and having the knee-jerk reaction to say "Abolish Prisons" altogether is definitely a leap that can then disqualify people from public discourse. BECAUSE it's pretty mainstream to fall back on the justice system to fix societal problems and not look at other alternatives.

Prison Reform? Bail Reform? Stuff like that is more in line with progressive demands. I'm not sure how large the Abolish Prisons movement actually is. Are there a lot of these people you are in contact with online / IRL?
