And I think it was a understandable emotional reaction to call for the character to not be recast, but ultimately, a stifling and limiting position. We've had how many Batmans, Spidermans, and Supermans? It's a shame to have T'Challa = Chadwick and vice versa.
Shuri as BP is okay, but really would have been a better move for a third movie. I'll watch this, but my excitement is pretty low. The trailer is cool and all, but doesn't really move me like that.

But in general I don't like trailers using a cover of a song done in a different style and not having any dialog.

But this trailer's still good - but I'd like to hear a little more of the story instead of listening to a cover song.

getting actual story information yet - a teaser's job is to show enough imagery to build hype for the movie. We'll get more story info as we get closer and there's and actual full trailer.

No Woman, No Cry is as on the nose perfectly matched to teaser as any song could be. We literally see several women in mourning over the death of T’Challa, while the song is offering comfort telling them not to cry because everything’s gonna be alright…which blends into Kendrick’s defiant Alright as we see the Wakandans defiantly defend themselves against Namor and the Atlanteans…

The second question about Bob Marley being Jamaican is equally stupid - first because the version they used is performed by Tems who is from Nigeria, but secondly because a major theme of Black Panther (THE major theme of the first movie) is about the connectivity of the African diaspora with T’Challa and Killmonger as literal first cousins but one American and the other African, with T’Challa and the Wakandans learning that they need to be connected to Black people around the world. Marley is obviously part of the African diaspora, as is Kendrick, who had music all over the first movie.

Dr. Boyce Watkins already created a video saying the trailer lacks black masculinity.

I mean the King is both literally and figuratively dead, the country is in mourning and I assume they are being immediately attacked before they can crown someone new.

We haven't even had a full plot synopsis yet.

Bro has me side eyeing him lately on stoopid shit he’s been bumping his gums about.

I get the sentiment of the “absence of the black male” in Hollywood films.

But this is JUST the 1st trailer. There’s still more to be said about what BP2 is about and who ends up in the BP armor (Although I’m 99% certain it’s Shuri considering the comic history of BP).

Something Boyce clearly knows nothing about (especially with gaming) and is jumping ahead of himself as usual.

With T'chaka dead, killmonger dead, and Chadwick dead, M'baku's the only black male of note in black panther 2.

"chick flick" is a stretch, but there's definitely going to be a hard pivot in this movie, which has been the case with most marvel/disney IPs this decade.

Not complaining. I'm sure this movie will be great.

In the comics Shuri also becomes Black Panther.

There's established canon for this character. The director didn't "write them into a hole".

>Seems to be breaking with comic book (and film) tradition.

Black Panther is a title. T’Challa is just the main iteration we follow in the comics.

And in the comics, when T’Challa is sick, Shuri takes the mantle.

We see three separate Black Panthers across two movies in the MCU
We see the mantle passed down when one dies.
We also see the mantle change hands via ritual ceremony.

Not recasting, and handing the mantle over to another character, is 100% in line with both the comics and the movie.

So not only is that not a valid complaint, it’s 180 degrees away from every ounce of established canon and tradition in both the comics and movies- particularly with this character.

Spider-Man was never recast with the same continuity. Each recast came with a reboot.
Not only that, that was an exponentially smaller world than what we have in the MCU.

It’s not like there was a credible option to takeover as Spider-Man in the first two franchises.

BP not only has established canon that makes passing down the mantle the logical, realistic, and narratively consistent choice, it also has credible, established options to do it.

Shuri
Killmonger
M’Baku

in comics

Shuri as BP is an idea that's hella new, and those books were terrible
You pick up any random BP comic in the history of the character you are almost guaranteed to get a story starring Tchalla

NOT ONLY THAT, but Shuri and Mbuku as chatracters, are thin/weak as hell compared to Tchalla.

This is like making a Thunderbolt Ross Red Hulk movie

..just to quiet the critics regarding ONE trailer lol.

If y'all truly knew the amount of effort & sacrifices made to complete this film in the face of every challenge you could possibly imagine (injuries, cancer, pandemic, DEATH, etc.), good grief! © Cha'lie Brown

I watched this crew approach every obstacle with one goal in mind:

To make a film that not only honored the original canon, T'Challa, AND Chadwick Boseman with integrity and respect.

I can honestly say that while there will always be criticism when it comes to artistic license, this film is balanced and shows respect to all the questions/comments/concerns raised in recent years.

52. "Even from the outside, this feels like a sort of Winter Soldier moment"
In response to Reply # 47
Sun Jul-31-22 03:15 AM by Nodima

In retrospect, I love the first three phases of the MCU as a whole. Not only does it tell an impressively coherent story about…the seven or eight major themes it approaches over time, but the movies leading to Avengers and Ultron also feel like distinct time capsules of comic book movie making.

I also was checked out for a all of Phase 2 at the time. Civil War brought me back because I knew that story and heard Spider-Man might appear. But doing the big download before Infinity War, it became pretty clear that something happened to the franchise thanks to Winter Soldier (and Guardians) - it found a voice and a primary plot, even if that primary plot would often linger as the B or C story outside Cap movies. And it made those past two Avengers movies not just feel like spectacles but real stories with actual stakes, I matter how full of tropes and quips.

It’s be very, very cool if this movie injected this current run of Marvel movies with a sense of what it means to lose something. These movies lost almost all of their stars, or otherwise are in the business of passing the torch from icons to unsure bets. Aside from the real world business, the characters that are left lost the ones that have them purpose and a higher calling than simple monster of the week stuff. I didn’t see Strange 2, but the most hollow aspect of Spidey 3 was that it nodded at what it means to experience loss and estrangement in the least subtle, most Saturday morning cartoon way possible.

Which I also get - this franchise is never gonna find room for Logan in its canon, let alone a character like Falcon dealing with the loss of Steve more than the responsibility of wearing the shield - but this trailer gives me a possibly misguided sense of hope that Fiege and team realize they’re flagging not just because the product is diluted by the TV shows but because the audience still cares about Tony, Steve, T’Challa, Bruce and whoever else. The characters we have left ought to be dealing with that too, not Scarlet Witch’s trauma from the end of Infinity War. That’s a potent story, but at the risk of speaking for a lot of people it’s really hard to care about a character who’s always been on the fringes of these movies - even with a clever TV show, she’s still just the gal what does the hand motions like Strange without similarly galactic implications.

I really, really want to see this movie absolutely wreck itself over T’Challa the person/king as much as Black Panther the costume, with where the last movie left him and his counsel fighting to become a global example for Black excellence rather than hesitant recluses. There’s so much potential for this movie to chart the path toward Jonathan Majors’ Kang swaggering through the major plot of the MCU as a sort of trolley problem for these current heroes - are they too burdened by the achievements of their predecessors and idols to become their own best selves? Is the franchise similarly too weighed down by that run from 2013-2019 to pull the same trick again?

It feels really grim to write all of that considering this is ultimately in many ways due to the actual tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman, but sadly part of what excites me so much about this movie’s trailer is that in the same way the Russo brothers figured out that the original Avengers arc was a World War allegory about who wields power and how, Coogler could totally unlock how this current phase is capable of really examining how hard it can be to exit a time of supreme faith in established heroes only to realize the threats aren’t gone and the need for new heroes isn’t abstract.

Edit: Just to say that after saying way too much, I totally get ultimately this will be a comic book movie with action set pieces, tie-ins to the greater MCU and have to appeal to late adolescent and teenage children as much as geeks like me. I say all of the above the implied caveat “for a Marvel movie, anyway.”

Then again, they’re making that She-Hulk show, so.

..believe it or not, some of your concerns will be addressed in the next few films (directly and indirectly).

Again, it's not perfect, but we worked really hard to bring balance to the universe (pun intended), but as a commonly repeated theme in the MCU:

You can't save them all.

I'm interested in your review after the premier.

Saw this shit last night in IMAX.

First let me start by saying all you recast T'Challa niggas look real fucking stupid right now. This film greatly honors his legacy both as Chadwick the actor AND T'Challa the character. The mid-credits scene is gonna have y'all eating Crow. Honestly, that mid-credits scene is SO good that going forward Marvel should cut that shit out.

This is not as good as the first one, but it's still a great film and easily the best of Phase Four so far.

My main gripe here is Namor. I have no problems with them changing his background as it's still true to the character. However, he's just Killmonger Part Two. Like Erik, I agree with him, but damn if this didn't feel like the same shit. Loved seeing the kingdom of Talokan as it's visually breathtaking, but it slows the movie down and should've been saved for Namor's own film or show (don't kid yourself, it's gonna happen).

I wish this just stuck to a geopolitical thriller with the world trying to invade Wakanda and mine vibranium from the nation. Would've been dope if U.S. Agent was the villain of the movie working on behalf of the United Nations to destabilize Wakanda playing into the colonization themes.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character Allegra is here full force. I still don't like the character and the way she's used here, she should've been the Amanda Waller in this film dispatching other supers and playing the destabilizing game from the shadows.

I do love that all the women are front and center. It's rare to see a movie of this size show black women like this. Smart, strong, and capable heroes. Riri Williams leaps off the page even if her and her part of the story could've been cut.

This is easily the best film of Phase Four with Spider-Man: No Way Home close behind. It's a lot to take in on the first watch and a tad too long, but this is a worthy follow-up to the first film. This has a distinction if being only the second Marvel sequel where it acts as a direct sequel to the first film than the Avengers movie that proceeded it. The other one is The Winter Soilder. All the themes setup in the first are explored here and they make explicit references to the first with only one mention of Thanos (thank God).

With the mid-credits scene in play, I can't wait to what Black Panther 3 is gonna be.

In response to Reply # 61

161 minutes for this, whereas Infinity War was only 149.

It's even longer than Eternals at 157 minutes- and that was way too long.

Only Endgame was longer.

I have a theater rented out for Saturday and between the run time and the preview we'll be in there for well over 3 hours, maybe closer to 3:20.

I said “This is Black Infinity War”

And my son corrected me and said “No, this is Black Endgame, because they won”

LOL. I had to agree.

Namor was a great antagonist. So many callbacks to the OG film. A cameo no one should spoil.

In response to Reply # 61

Spoilers abound here in response to your spoiler filled review

Riri couldn’t have been cut. She’s the main source of dramatic tension between Shuri and Namor in the middle of the film. Showing Namor’s homeland was also key to the climax. If Shuri would not have had that beautiful experience there, it would have undercut her final decision in the climax.

Namor is also NOT Killmonger 2. He has a kingdom to rule and protect. Killmonger was consumed with vengeance because his father was killed when he was a child. Namor saw what happened to his mother’s homeland and does not want it to happen to his. He is also a more nuanced antagonist as one can see when he initially hesitated to strike when he first saw Shuri fly into battle against him.

The film excellently built on the ramifications of decisions from each character.

Also I do not think Namor will have a show, I think he will continue to appear on the film side.

Peace,

My dawg was getting to it though. They definitely got his demeanor correct from the comics. I also like that they didn’t have any elements of the Aquaman movie’s version of Atlantis. This super grounded version made it seem like it could be real.

Namor is nothing like Kilmonger at all. The theme here is building and refusing to destroy everything.

Great film and really built up Shuri. She earned that mantle.

They have tribes, there was always a war of tribes.
Their is an agrarian tribe who's skillset was based on farming
The river tribe who focused on spying
The dora milaje? Protectors of the throne
The mountain tribe who had their own domain of both surviving the mountains without technology and also being able to fish (they found T'Challa while fishing)

Like they got a couple of Navy Seal like special forces that are good at what they do but they didn't have anything that looked like an army. Like Namor and them just rolled up on them like what. (BTW, a pet peeve of mine is always how easily some societies get defeated. Wakanda was like Dune in that no way would a society and that advance be so easy for a surprise attack that easily defeats them in one day).

Anyway, Lots of folks on social media mad that the Wakandans and the Talokan are fighting each other and not taking on the oppressors but the US military is like 1M folks. I don't care how much vibranium you have you ain't beating 1M folks with clubs and swords.

Namor alone would make quick work of most solitary military bases, if they were guerilla war style one base at a time, they would definitely win. The US doesn’t even know where Takoma is and Wakanda is protected by a force field. Tony and Nat dead, Cap and Vision gone, Thor and C Marvel off world. The US would do what, call up War Machine, Hawkeye and Spider Man? LOL

Namor is very old (500+) and apparently goes up to the surface from time to time since he can blend in a bit. i'm sure they're aware of what's going on in the world. they must have thought they should prepare to defend themselves in case they ever had problems. this probably not the first time they've had to mix it up with people from the surface world.

for me the first 2 acts are as good as anything Marvel has done. I guess I'm on the side asking why did they have to fight each other lol It felt like they forced that to happen but oh well. If we see more of Namor I hope he's fleshed out more and doesn't just stay full villain going forward.

I missed the first like 8 seconds because I got up to throw away trash, didn't expect a cold open lol I got up during one of the PSAs or, "this is why we go to theaters" videos. Figured I'd have enough time. Next time I'll be a slob and just throw it on the ground I guess.

those diving suits belonged to the people they had literally just killed moments earlier for drilling under the ocean.

The ending was beautiful

But why the fuck did the wakandans choose to ignore Namor's warning and protect Riri?

This is a black american with zero ties to wakanda building technology that could potentially destroy them, what was their reason to put their lives at risk to protect Riri?

Up until a few years ago wakandans wouldve killed Riri on sight.

Why are they going out their way to rescue the CIA agent?

Wakandans fighting Mayans while the cia agents are sitting in their chairs casually talking about destabilizing their country

America is never made to be an actual enemy. whats the actual body count for white characters killed in the black panther duology compared to wakandans?

Kill Riri ? What ? They suppose to take orders from Namor ?

That was the problem in the first BP movie.

they literally have a shared struggle via vibranium. if western nations find a way to get vibranium through namor, wakanda is done.

they had zero explanation for going against namor.

yes. kill riri. or capture her and scare her straight

they couldve bargained with namor, but instead wanted to play games, knowing they weren't combat ready, and got their queen killed

the women.

In Infinity Wars and Endgame there are scenes were the women characters "team up" briefly and it seems like they tried to extend that concept in Wakanda Forever

With Chadwick sadly passing, short of introducing new male characters, all you really had to work with was M'Baku, Ross and W'Kabi. Gearing the film around any of them (particularly Ross) wouldn't have made sense.

chalked up to “it was just a movie”

What didn’t Queen Ramonda have anyone nearer to here when she was attacked?

Why didn’t they have a whole squadron of those fighter bumblebee things?

Why did they only have 1 ship?

I didn't realize Junior was in the scene where the Queen first showed up in Haiti. I don't know if they're implying that she got to know him on that trip or has known about him the whole time.
