I listened to step in my room about 6 months ago. It popped in my head to reference it for some funny (to me) reason, and it stayed in my head for days until I couldn’t take it anymore.

AND I WAS FUCKIN JAMMING.

I also listened to Real Talk like 5x in a row a few months ago. It is still as hilarious and amazing as I remembered.

Besides that, I can still love the remixes and most of the steppin stuff (the happy people album has a slew of slappers) even if I don’t seek it out with any regularity. But some of it? Yeah, it’s too confessional and skeevy. Rap Knishes for sure.

The song I miss enjoying the most is Body Callin remix.

He's singing about banging someone's 14 year old daughter. That's all of it.

I stopped when the first video came out. Threw my CD out and never looked back. If the songs come on the radio, my wife and I turn it off. If they play that shit at a club or wedding, we clear evacuate the dance floor immediately. I want NOTHING to do with his music. I even researched songs he wrote for other folks and started phasing them shits out of any playlists I created.

That man spent literal decades being a predator.

If the justice system was fair he would’ve been stopped and locked early, victimized and abused far fewer people, and gotten the help he needed.

But here we are. A loss for every single person involved with the maximum number of lives ruined.

On a human level 30 years at his age is the end
If he does the whole bid and survives he’ll be 85
This is effectively a death sentence for that man
That he himself earned every minute
But if someone had stopped 20-30 year old him, he’d have victimized fewer people and had a life ahead of the end of his bid
R Kelly is effectively dead from todays decision and that’s wild.
Theres no musical or professional comeback
Theres no redemption or rehab
There’s no chance for reparation or growth
R Kelly has been sent to a slow death away from society
And that “I’m fighting for my life” meme became sad and not funny.

He almost got to do all of that in reverse. He got a huge ‘I’m still over here singing’ run from like 1995 to 2010 after the Aaliyah stuff. He got a chance to do a shitload of steppin after the tape came out too!

The toughest thing for me to deal with is this: it looks like the Mfer never really stopped doing bad shit AND he had mountains of help covering it up, securing more people to do it to, and all of that.

But really, what’s better? Getting to live basically a whole life with MULTIPLE shots to STOP and then having it all fall apart in his 50s? Or being forced to stop around 2000, going to jail, and then getting out of jail around now and hoping to be able to show up in his 50s and overthrow all of his musical children?

Short of that here we are. Maximum lives ruined, his included.
Robert Kelly is and has always been responsible for his actions and choices
But it’s clear this man needed to be prevented from making his own actions and choices
And facilitated to better ones. Instead he was enabled.

I don't think any of them worry about some Cosby shit playing out. just more the public scrutiny if some kind of detailed popular documentary drops about it, etc...

Woody Allen level scrutiny. he hasn't 'gone away' but his stock has definitely fallen in the pulbic eye.
People are more apprehensive about working with him than they would have been a few years ago. Others saying they regret working with him. HBO dropped a docuseries about allegations (though i thought the series kinda sucked)

I know none of these guys are worried about getting locked up, but more they probably don't want the last thing about them before they die being some quote about how it was a different time and she was 13 going on 30.

This is neither an attack nor hostile criticism, but it's interesting to me how we're on a site started by Black people that was mostly comprised of Black people at some point, yet we've reached a point where ppl are apprehensive about calling out any manifestation of anti-Black racism. Like, even other Black people will come at you for it. The way the system of white supremacy is on autopilot is damn near fascinating sometimes.

Hell no. Teenagers sleeping with a rock star like Steven Tyler was the highlight
of their life....

Hell, you would have to throw every male musician in jail since the beginning of
music.....and Motown artists?

Groupies chasing tour buses from state to state?....Jim Morrison, Hendrix,
Otis Redding, etc, they were all tapping underage ass after shows. Hell
Elvis Presley married a 14 year old groupie.

Let’s not get silly here.

There is a huge difference between a young 20 something rock star
focking a teenage groupie after a concert and a guy preying and hunting
down underage girls and making them his sex slaves

But God Damn, his life is over. I just don’t understand why this dude went after
underage girls, some as young as 13 years old. He was basically operating
an underage harem

I was never a huge R Kelly fan anyway. He reminded me too much of 79th
street in Chicago. For some reason his songs makes me think of 79th Street.

not in terms of defending his actions, but more it just seems weird listening to a guy like this sing a bunch of love songs and try to separate the two.

i'm generally always fine with separating the art from the artist, but it seems harder here, and again, it could just because i don't personally have to in this case lol.

is why Michael Jackson went to him to produce one of his greatest songs

Kelly produced almost everybody....Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Usher,
Ronald Isley, Nas...

He was king of RnB in the 90s hands down.

The fact that he sings, plays, performs, writes, produces and composes
for himself and other big music acts, means that he is a genius.

And Butterflies was composed and written by Marsha Ambrosius ( Floetry)

No, it just makes him competent. But that's a whole other discussion.

You can do that and be a genius.
You can also do that and just be musically competent.

But I'm just talking about R Kelly the performer, songs sung and recorded by him. You Remind Me, Ignition, shit like that. None of that shit is special. IBICF is cool, but it never came across like anything special to me.

Funny, I actually knew that, come to think of it.

What did Kells write for MJ? I'm sure I'll look it up later, either way.

I was thinking the years of sexual abuse endured by the victims was the tragedy, but that’s me. But maybe I’m wrong, and his victim were more traumatized by the fact they were being raped by a supposed genius than they were the rapes themselves.

This is what kills me about the entertainment industry. A lot of are favorite older artist have some serious demons and bones in their closets.

So now The Cosby Show wasn’t the shit because “what about the victims and how they feel?”

Wrong. I had already said I didn't care for his music all that much.

The comment you're referencing, was me giving a sarcastic reply to this specific comment:

"genius or not his level of talent is way above average which is what makes his story so tragic"

No, I'm sorry, his level of talent being way above average isn't what makes it so tragic.

I'd say the allegations of him being abused himself as a child makes it tragic on his end, but his talent is irrelevant. his talent is arguably what allowed him to do what he did for so long, to so many. A lesser talent with less resources probably doesn't do what he did for so long. So yes, there's a certain tragedy specific to the ability to use power, influence, and status to get away with horrible shit. But the talent level itself doesn't make this tragic. The acts do.

But it was a specific reply to one specific comment.

>I wasn’t the biggest fan but dude had a few cuts that were

It's not like my opinion of Kells' music changed after this all blew up. It's not revisionist. He was never all that appealing to me. Not horrible, not great, just "ok, cool song" level for me. My opinion of his music is not impacted in any way by this other shit.

The Cosby Show was, is, and always will be a short list GOAT family comedy, regardless of bill.

I don't disagree with any of that.

The initial comment came across a bit too flippant, I guess, with the implication that it would somehow be less tragic if he weren't so talented.

But yes, I do agree, he had a tremendous capacity for good, that went to waste as a result of his predilections.

Now I'm morbidly curious how far down the lunacy hole his videos go.

Also, does any here remember way way back in the days Maxxx posted clips of himself actually singing? I think the songs were centered around food, but I could be very wrong since the posted material was probably a decade or more old.

I don't know why people keep bringing up Ghislaine Maxwell. It's clear to everyone that she was bringing girls to the predator and that the predator was going to get more years than she was.

R Kelly is THE PREDATOR in that situation.

his attraction to young girls being predatory (even with that he throws in caveats).

so i guess in his eyes Maxwell was worse.

The lady who used to do my hair pre-pandemic went on a rant about how he was innocent back in 2019. It forever changed the way I view her. I hate to admit it, but I do view her as less intelligent now. Well honestly, that was a cherry on top because there are other reasons for me to think less of her intelligence but, that thing just sealed the deal for me.

he said that it would take a big-budget studio to fake the tape and that he thinks 'they' faked it because of how much he said it'd cost to get it done. even 20 years ago it wouldn't be expensive to fake a grainy VHS but considering the logic cesshole he crawled out of, that's a moot point and not worth mentioning (I don't think drawing the line at idolizing pedophiles is particularly unreasonable but even if it were I'm doing it anyway)

its like Keith Sweats jam back in the day.

first line: you may be young but your ready.. ready to learn, your not a little girl, your a woman.

and BBD on Do Me!

Backstage, underage, adolescent
How ya doin', fine, she replied
I sighed, I like to do the wild thing
Action took place
Kinda wet, don't forget
The J, the I, the M, the M, the Y, why'all
I need a body bag

years later we all realized what we were singing.. but these are still good songs.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

Of those 3 acts...
1 has a pee tape and currently serving 30 years for human trafficking

There's a whole gang of cringe worthy songs/lyrics from back in the day

We're not back in the day (c)

+1, I didn't catch NE's set...did BBD perform do me...?

except "its me snitches"

interesting.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
