I mean there could be a religious tie into that, I guess...but RIP is pretty innocuous. It's like a less overt version of saying "bless you" to someone who sneezes. Who cares?

muhfucka I care, that's why I asked. Resting in peace denotes "sleep" so it wouldn't be a sentiment I would wanna express given my beliefs (or lack thereof), hence the inquiry into an alternative expression.

sneezes.

Like the whole thing originates in the idea that evil spirits can enter your body after you sneeze so you pray (or cast a spell) to somehow ward off those evil spirits.

Whether you say "God Bless you" or "Salud" or "Good Heath to You" its all rooted in superstition.

Blessing people is rooted in the Bible.

People can say attempting to bestow blessing on people has to be done in the right way, right words ("May the Heavenly Father bless you" - not ORDERING the Heavenly Father to bless someone) with the right attitude (not a flippant attitude) but there are a lot of New Testament books that start and end with Paul and Peter blessing the saints.

No. Not going to battle so won't be looking the the usual replies coming. Those who battle about this just got nothing else really.

2. I wasn't talking about blessing people in general. My point was that saying god bless you is rooted in the belief that evil spirits are trying to enter your body when you sneeze, superstition.

By both the actual definition and usage of the term superstition, saying it’s rooted in the bible IS superstition.

This isn’t even up for debate. It’s just a bare bones fact.

Moreover, that you put so many stipulations on the act of “blessing” someone only served to underscore this fact. Shit, the way you described it fits the basic elements of a spell- i.e, “ a verbal formula believed to have magical force”

Per mirriam-webster:

-the use of means (such as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces

-magic rites or incantations

-an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source

-something that seems to cast a spell : ENCHANTMENT
all the mystery, magic and romance which belong to royalty alone

But it gets worse. Per Encyclopedia Brittanica:

“spell, words uttered in a set formula with magical intent. The correct recitation, often with accompanying gestures, is considered to unleash supernatural power.”

For all your bravado about how “ Those who battle about this just got nothing else really.”, literally everything you said, is the very definition of superstition and magic.

This is an objective fact.

maybe it used to hold some sort of religious connotation, but at least for the last 20 years, probably longer, its just an expression of respect to the dead.

In response to Reply # 0

It’s not really up for debate either. I looked this up not long after I realized I was an atheist, and it does have a Christian origin. I looked it up again, and I see no alternate takes.

It originated as a Latin phrase appearing in Latin on Christian gravestones dating back to the 8th century, being particularly prominent among Roman Catholics.

So the phrase absolutely has a religious connotation.

That said, a lot of things with religious origins become common vernacular that’s used without a thought to the origin.

I have no issue using the term personally, but I get wanting to cut it out of your vernacular. I don’t have a particularly useful alternative. I personally don’t use “rest” in a literal sense. I see “rest” in this context as, you’re simply done with all this. Whatever negative happens in this world, you’re done with all that.

As best I understand, that person no longer exists to be able to “rest” in a literal sense.

Perhaps “you’ll be missed” or “may your memory yet live” or something along those lines would work for you.

And the only time I would have typed it would be in a response to a post announcing someone's death on OKP or on Reddit or something. Because even on Facebook if it's someone I knew personally (or their loved one posting about it) then I'd be responding with something like "thinking about you and your family" or "praying for you and your family" if they are religious. "RIP" feels cold and impersonal, as a response when it's a celebrity you don't actually know.

Lmao goddamn that was bad

Posted from my phone, and it was a rush job. I have an iphone now and corrections aren’t as simple as they were on android- I can’t figure out how to easily edit a single letter of a word without having to do the entire word.

That, plus we were out of town for a wedding, And I was in between messages organizing a family breakfast. So it was just a string of factors leading to a lazy ass post. I figured, I can respond to this quickly and easily and just knocked it out a little *too* quick, lol.

Thanks for the cleanup fam!

But yeah, the two are worlds apart. It’s not a term I really trip on, though I do recognize why some would. Most people are way too deeply entrenched in even the smaller, mundane religious/superstitious aspects of this world to get why someone else would even think to change them.

In this case, your entire thought is firmly rooted in reality.

In IC’s example, they equated it to a superstitious belief, based on a myth, applied to a clear work of fiction. That just doesn’t correlate at all.
