"Elon trying to buy Twitter?"

any thoughts on this?

don't see much of a positive side to it, even though there's a part of me hopes he destroys it.

i'm also assuming this doesn't happen, but if it does, what does Elon Musk twitter look like?

Feign interest in a company to generate some news or attention, which will
create a huge demand for the stock of the company. The price of the stock
will rise, and once the price hits a certain price point, then the shares will be
dumped to gain a massive profit.

He doesn’t even have a business plan in place for Twitter. He simply filed
a bid with the SEC that he would like to buy twitter at specific price point.

Twitter’s stock price jumped by 12 percent after the news was announced that
Elon was interested in purchasing twitter.

I don’t trust any of it.

so certainly like wapo but a bit more dangerous (to squeegs point) in terms of manipulation and privacy implications.

It's a game of chess. One billionaire buys a singe prestige paper so another billionaire buys a site filled with conflict with the idea to let even more shit fly!!

Geniuses!!

Also, Elon's Ted Talk was fucking stupid. Dude doesn't know his ass from a tunnel in the ground. If he was so smart then he'd fund his own shit to compete in the "marketplace of ideas" or whatever shit he's spewing.

If Elon buys Twitter it just devolves into 4chan pretty quickly and he loses the customers who Twitter actually makes money on.

Instead, I have general concerns about our reality slow-walking towards the Science Fiction-predicted dystopian future where a few mega-wealthy megalomaniacs control every aspect of society, and robots do all of the heavy lifting and thinking for us, we all live in the sewers because the surface is uninhabitable, and blah blah blah.

or complete right wing hellscape.

it still amazes me how much white people (particularly the white working class) have been convinced to vote and support causes against their own economic/health/etc self interests.

they wanna take america back to an era when it was 'great' but dont wanna replicate the economic policy during that 'great' era (taxation, unions, social safety net, wage increases, anti-trust/monopoly, etc).

"In a securities filing dated Wednesday, the billionaire tech CEO proposed $54.20 a share for the social media giant, calling it his 'best and final offer. If it is not accepted, he added, 'I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder.'

In a letter addressed to Twitter Chairman Bret Taylor, Musk said he invested in the company because of its 'potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe.'" — The Washington Post
-----

dude said he had a 'plan b' in that ted talk. looks like the plan b is just selling his stock off at whatever price its been inflated to since he/twitter has been in the news.

i think dude is just a mega wealthy clout chaser. he gets hyped up by social media into doing shit to make headlines and generate convo/controversy. then finds a convenient off ramp that allows him to save face.

not to say what he will or won't do, but it's part of the threat, because a (possible) outcome of him selling so much stock at one is that it will push the price further down, which is part of his leverage in seeking other shareholders to push the company to take his offer

twitter can be fun, and useful, but i think it's an overall cespool of people at their worst imo

and while don't think twitter has gotten any better since Trump left, i think it will get so much worse once he comes back.

if that makes sense.

shit's just gonna be bad for the world

which would be good news for the world.

He did a service getting the car companies to take full electrification seriously (though that's not as big an environmental benefit as people tend to think).

Other than that, he's been nothing but a petty supervillain.

regardless of if its actually good for business or not.

ideology supersedes everything else. they have to proselytize and shoe horn a conservative perspective into everything they touch as a means for political preservation.

former head of nbc news and msnbc tried to force greta sustern, hugh hewitt, megyn kelly, etc down their liberal audiences throats. all 3 of them bombed quickly with viewers because conservatives have no real appeal or talent outside of catering to their nutjob base over on dedicated right wing media outlets.

former head of abc news james goldston made a point to force conservative members on to their panel for each season. and those members inevitably end up being hated by viewers and dampen ratings by repelling potential viewers (who are mostly urban liberal women for this show).

former head of cnn jeff zucker platformed trump propagandists for drama and permanently relegated cnn to a distant 3rd place in the cable news ratings and mortally damaged its credibility as a trusted source of news. and the right wing audience they courted just attacked and de-legitimized them regardless.

numerous newspapers and local tv affiliates get bought by right wing owners...who make it a point to bend the coverage to a more conservative slant...and their readership/viewership drops. not only from liberals leaving but a lot of independents and moderate conservatives actually prefer those outlets to be nonpartisan and unbiased (in their eyes).

and so on.

the same will happen here. twitter struggles as it is. it has an overwhelmingly liberal user base. letting right wing disinfo/trolls to run wild on there is only gonna chase away even more users and accelerate its downward spiral.

is how little the "good guys" have done to stop it or even tried.

We got right wing billionaires controlling multiple forms of media...with Twitter being the final one to fall. I mean, think about how much organizing, etc has been done via twitter.

Dude didn't over extend himself to buy Twitter for shits and gigs. It will change.

Tech monopolies. Books getting banned. Teachers scared to teach.
Crazy/scary fucking laws being passed. Attempted coups. Climate disasters on the horizon.

All that shit.

And the "good guys" are doing very little to even try to stop it.

Yeah this is partially my usual "the dems are fucking useless" rant but also....

There aren't any decent, left-leaning rich people or what? Like no rich person wants to straight up buy a couple senate seats? Fund/invest in a carpetbagger movement to Montana and Wyoming? Outbid Elon? Nothing? Disgusting I even have to think that but damn.

We're all just powerless to it. Feels like we are just watching history repeat itself and the folks some of us fought for/donated money to/donated time to/etc/etc are just willfully walking into a blood bath while their consultants tell them to just "talk about job creation" or some shit...as literal fucking fascism is on the rise.

The lack of bold thinking/action/courage in Biden's first year may have sealed the fucking deal.

good to see him finally making his stance officially now.

but he cant just unilaterally terminate the sale.

hes gotta pay a billy to break the agreement.

i wonder what twitter is gonna do with that money lol.

twitter chairman says they coming for that paper.
https://twitter.com/btaylor/status/1545526087089696768

im reading he could be on the hook for the $1 bil *plus* other damages for violating other clauses in the agreement (like non-disparagement guidelines).

Reports vary on how "official" it is, but it looks like he's trying to get out of it.

From what I understand, if this is true, it probably won't be as "easy" as Musk paying Twitter $1 billion for a reverse termination as he agreed to when he started this process. That only happens when there's an outside reason that the deal can't close. If Musk ends things because he feels like it, or, say, doesn't have the money that he said he did, Twitter can sue him for many millions, should they choose.

So I imagine that if Elon really is backing out of the deal, there are lawsuits forthcoming.

Musk abandons deal to buy Twitter; company says it will sue

Associated Press

Sat, July 9, 2022

Elon Musk blames inadequate information about bots for reason to cancel $44 billion deal to acquire the social media platform

Elon Musk announced Friday that he will abandon his tumultuous $44 billion offer to buy Twitter after the company failed to provide enough information about the number of fake accounts. Twitter immediately fired back, saying it would sue the Tesla CEO to uphold the deal.

The likely unraveling of the acquisition was just the latest twist in a saga between the world’s richest man and one of the most influential social media platforms, and it may portend a titanic legal battle ahead.

Twitter could have pushed for a $1 billion breakup fee that Musk agreed to pay under these circumstances. Instead, it looks ready to fight to complete the purchase, which the company’s board has approved and CEO Parag Agrawal has insisted he wants to consummate.

In a letter to Twitter’s board, Musk lawyer Mike Ringler complained that his client had for nearly two months sought data to judge the prevalence of “fake or spam” accounts on the social media platform.

“Twitter has failed or refused to provide this information. Sometimes Twitter has ignored Mr. Musk’s requests, sometimes it has rejected them for reasons that appear to be unjustified, and sometimes it has claimed to comply while giving Mr. Musk incomplete or unusable information,” the letter said.

Musk also said the information is fundamental to Twitter’s business and financial performance, and is needed to finish the merger.

In response, the chair of Twitter’s board, Bret Taylor, tweeted that the board is “committed to closing the transaction on the price and terms agreed upon” with Musk and “plans to pursue legal action to enforce the merger agreement. We are confident we will prevail in the Delaware Court of Chancery.”

Court of Chancery...hmmm...

When I read that, I thought: "more like "Court of Chicanery"

then I read further down the article:

Groups opposing the takeover from the outset — including those advocating for women, minorities and LGBTQ people — cheered Friday’s news.

“Despite what Musk may claim, this deal isn’t ending because of Twitter bots or spam accounts. This deal is collapsing because of Elon Musk’s own erratic behavior, embrace of extremists and bad business decisions,” said Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, a left-leaning nonprofit watchdog group that’s been critical of Musk’s Twitter bid.

Musk, he said, “made it clear that he would roll back Twitters’ community standards and safety guidelines, which would turn the platform into a fever swamp of dangerous conspiracy theories, partisan chicanery and white supremacist radicalization.”

(There goes that word chicanery again - ha ha)

https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/musk-said-go-ahead-with-5420-share-twitter-deal-bloomberg-reporter-2022-10-04/

Oct 4 (Reuters) - Billionaire Elon Musk is proposing to go ahead with his original offer of $54.20 per share to take Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) private, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, sending shares of the social media firm surging.

The news comes ahead of a highly anticipated face-off between Musk and Twitter in Delaware's Court of Chancery on Oct. 17, in which the social media company was set to seek an order directing Musk to close the deal at $54.20 per share.

Musk agreed in April to buy Twitter for $44 billion, but within weeks said the number of bot accounts was much higher than Twitter's estimate of less than 5% of users.
Musk, one of Twitter's most prominent users, claimed in July he could walk away from the deal because Twitter misled him about the number of real users and the security of user data.

"This is a clear sign that Musk recognized heading into Delaware Court that the chances of winning vs. Twitter board was highly unlikely and this $44 billion deal was going to be completed one way or another," Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note after the news.
