"Man, this "Hollywood Desus" stuff is a LOT"
Mon Apr-11-22 04:44 AM by Nodima

https://www.reddit.com/r/bodegaboys/comments/u05t8c/mero_is_trying_to_get_stuff_going_yall/

https://www.reddit.com/r/bodegaboys/comments/tzyjt4/hollywood_desus_sucks/

https://www.reddit.com/r/bodegaboys/comments/tqlz72/hollywood_desus/

But I can't help but wonder, for those of us who remember dude posted up in libraries, basements, and/or anywhere with an internet connection...y'all similarly sad about this? Some of these comments seem to suggest insider knowledge that the Showtime show might continue but the Bodega Boys are cut off at the knees for one reason or another and it might be irreperable.

You buy it or is this just a glitch on the way to bigger bags?

Personally, it's been 5 months give or take since a podcast and my guts hurt! I also am pretty damn sure I preferred the Viceland show to Showtime, though the guest interviews are still dope.

It's really like 15 white boys circle jerking each other about how D&M sold out. Niggas in that post talking about "Desus is too busy doing NY Times articles." lol I swear...

Me personally I stopped listening to the podcast 'cause I was getting way too much content from them. They took up my whole week with 2 shows and a pod. And I been listening since the Complex days without missing an ep.

I felt like they needed a break from the pod anyway. Or at least slow down the frequency. I could hear they was burned out.

5. "Really?"
In response to Reply # 2

Granted, my schedule has me a podcast Michael Anthony in that I can never have enough of 'em so my tolerance for a lesser pod is higher than most

So it's the specificity of A) lack of pod with no announcement otherwise B) Mero's post in the first link C) my hurtin' guts that have me wondering how the old guard feels because you're right, Reddit fandoms can be weird but a life without Victor randomly chiming in about potential sponsors has been nearly weirder.

I need the art, damn it!

Two dirty n*ggas from the Bronx made moves and are making it. You can't perform on the corner every week like you did if you have shows at the Lincoln Center.I hope they do something as a sendoff to all the podcast fans. But beyond that, I'm happy for what they created and look forward to what's next.

I like the Complex and Vice shows too. I liked it when it when they were just interviewing rappers and activists and reporters. I liked it when they were just reacting to videos of people scrubbing or fucked up game shows or animals fucking or sex robots. But both of them have never made a secret that they wanted to get big from this. They've been saying from the get go that their goal was to make it onto "Ellen."

Now, they do things more "professional." They've got an official show runner and focus their energy towards making on really good show a week rather than four. But there's still a lot of their roots ingrained in the current incarnation. They're interviewing rappers and reviewing fish sandwiches and riffing on brawls at restaurants in the Bronx. Just because Desus is attending the same party as Pharrell, doesn't mean he's forgotten "where he came from."

the Vice show was my favorite too, but i also feel like its the level of fame people were comfortable with. I never expected them to blow much beyond that. I'm super happy they did, and I still watch/support, but i'd be lying if i say i didn't miss the Vice era for selfish reasons.

I agree that my favorite moments/segments come from the Vice incarnation. But the Showtime incarnation was pretty uncompromised. They had even more freedom. And yeah, there's been more emphasis on "written" segments, but it still works quite well.

It's a 20B industry and 80% of adults still listen to it.

Not everyone has showtime, but everyone has radio. It's a much larger potential audience.

You say its a different audience, but it isn't all that different from the hot97 & Power105 syndicated show audiences.

If these guys inherited the Breakfast Club or Ebro in the Morning, it would be a huge come up for them.

Hell, it's DRIED up. There's a listing on one of the entertainment job boards for a morning show personality for an LA radio station that has the salary at 65k-120k per year. Radio? Not a thing anymore.

But if it WAS?

D&M wouldn't translate to terrestrial radio where they have to be clean and beholden to sponsors.

Relative to similarly famous on air talent on broadcast or cable TV, anyway

The money is not so much in the salary as the ancillary opportunities you get from the exposure (hosting parties, events, etc)

Pretty sure Desus and Mero are paid well enough on Showtime for radio to not be a better alternative, though.

Of course I have no idea what kind of radio deals they might be able to negotiate (or what their Showtime terms are) tho.

Peace,

Are we surprised that Desus is out living it up and not always hanging out with his co-worker? They have very different life set-ups, etc. If I was Desus, I'd be out Hollywooding with cool fucking people too, lol.

And is there really anything stopping Mero from having a side hustle? Like, is he contractually not allowed to do shit without Desus? If he wants to pod and Desus doesn't want to, they can just say "cool, Mero can do a side gig while I'm out networking." Comedians who podcast/do appearances together also do their own solo stuff all the time.

He's the one who acted in that Netflix kids vs. vampire movie. And apparently had the more prominent vocal role in that Neo Yokio series. And had the very brief vocal cameo in "In the Heights." It seems like he's more interested of the two in being a comedic actor, which makes sense.

That being said...

I don't know if they 'work' separately.

I mean, Showtime COULD split them up and keep them in their regular timeslot on some right twix left twix shit.

That could be fun, but it ain't sustainable....

I see Mero's path. He's got a decent shot at becoming a comedic / character actor.

But Desus....

Commentator, host, does he go the stand up route.

I just don't see it as clearly.

I was wondering what late night spot was coming up.

Now I see it. Desus will be just fine. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion he wants to be on the West Coast.

at least in their video content and interviews i saw.

regularly talking over each other, constantly forcing themselves to piggyback or one up each others jokes.

it was very clear that desus was more naturally funny and mero was always trying hard to get his jokes off just to keep up.

and meros high pitch yelling was grating.

i can see desus moving on just fine and doing other things (this was prolly the source of some tension...i havent been keeping up).

but mero prolly gotta go look for a day job.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they had no chemistry - I think they often complimented eachtother well - but I definitely always noticed the below contrast. Mero's funny in his own way but Desus was often stealing the show cuz his jokes were more LOL funny while Mero's humor is goofier and more related to his being animated.

not sure if it's why their lack of chemistry/contrasting styles, whatever you want to call it seemed to work best in the Vice format.

the Showtime show, even though i like it, was Mero laughing at his own shit, trying to keep up on the humor, and the podcast, which i could never get into always felt like Desus overly turned up trying to match Mero's energy.

but that's just me. i only caught the pod 3 or 4 times

I didn’t watch religiously but when I didn’t see one outshining the other. They worked well together.

Could simply be that Mero was comfortable in his space and Desus wants more.

Hopefully it works out well for both of them.

87. "reading the standard Double Act format on wiki"
In response to Reply # 85

it's clear Desus is the straight man, Mero is the banana man (pride)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_act

Format

Humor is often derived from the uneven relationship between two partners, usually of the same gender, age, ethnic origin, and profession but drastically different in terms of personality or behavior; each one serves as a foil to the other. One member of the duo—the "straight man", "feed", "dead wood", or stooge—is often portrayed as reasonable and serious, while the other one—the funny man, "banana man", or comic—is portrayed as funny, less educated or less intelligent, silly, or unorthodox. When the audience identifies primarily with one character, the other is often referred to as a comic foil. The term "feed" comes from the way a straight man sets up jokes and then "feeds" them to his partner.

Despite the names often given to the roles, the straight man is not always humorless, nor is it always the comic who provides the act's humor. Sometimes the straight man gets laughs through sarcastic reactions to the comic's antics, such as Stewart Lee's deadpan, reasoned reactions to Richard Herring's ridiculous antics in their pairing. When the straight man serves no specific comic purpose, but acts as a device to make the comic look good, he is known as a stooge. Sometimes considered a derogatory term, "stooge" began to fall out of use by the 1930s with The Three Stooges. Most often the humor in a double act comes from the way the two personalities play off of each other, rather than from the individual players. In many successful acts the roles are interchangeable.

Desus's humor on the show was basically the same as it was here on the boards. His humor has never been straight or dry and understated.

And usually the straight man isn't funnier than the zany one. Desus is funnier than Mero, so that set-up doesn't describe them well.

I always thought Desus was next level funny here and on the show, and I haven't watched in a minute, but he's not on some make you belly laugh shit, it's mostly sly chuckles.

Not saying Mero is funnier than Desus by any means but the sarcastic, delivery and his more being prone to deadpan and keep a straight face I think was obviously a direct foil to Mero's slapstick, zany style.

Working against that foil constantly and in that format pigeonholes you either way, so I hope both of them branch out and do new things.

But Mero strikes me as having the higher upside as a media personality or potentially even an actor.

In response to Reply # 104

I think he already owned a house in NJ before they signed their first Showtime contract. But with the Showtime money, book deal money, and summer touring money, he upgraded on the home and probably put away enough to pay for all four of his kids' education, and a nice little nest egg. Everything after that is gravy. So I can see him figuring that with no show, he can do that voiceover/acting grind, maybe go back into stand-up comedy, and be happy with where he is.

like, how do we know he already doesn't have generational wealth?

also, people in here telling him how he should be hustling...like, how do we know he isn't?

maybe Desus is the lazy one (because he has that option) and Mero is like "c'mon dawg we need to work" (cuz he actually has kids and a family to build a future for). maybe that's why he was busting Desus chops to do the podcast (if those rumors are true)? Maybe Mero trying to get to all these opportunities and Desus is relaxing and happy rubbing elbows w/ Hollywood cats and is chilling on the money he stacked and is cool with that?

i mean, unless y'all KNOW them and have something to share then no one in here knows anything and everyone just needs to relax.

Desus might be funnier but that doesn’t mean he works harder than Mero when it comes to grinding.

dont grt me wrong, ionno these niggas personally so Desus might be funnier AND the harder worker.

shit was def getting repetitive but i think they had more checks to get as a group. dont know why they couldnt do they own shit and swing back around to each other for the bag.

all speculation but if the ratings werent keeping them afloat maybe this "breakup" was an alternative to announcing cancellation? guess that wouldnt keep them from podding tho so i dunno.

soos (c) hosting kimmel soon and should serve as a good barometer for his solo prospects.

Like the podcast was their safe say and do whatever the fuck we want space. Honestly the type of comedic energy they were pulling off just being themselves on the cast was unmatched maybe ever. Without that everything probably just became business including their relationship.

Need to download like every ep possible now before shit disappear. Honestly one of the greatest runs in Bronx history.

111. "Matthew Belloni Reports: Desus & Mero Split was about Victor *swipe*"
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.reddit.com/r/bodegaboys/comments/w52xyg/matthew_belloni_reports_desus_mero_split_was/

What follows is from Matthew Belloni’s newsletter for Puck News. It’s paywalled so here’s the text:

“So, a couple readers texted, what the heck happened to Desus & Mero? Blame their manager.

When the news broke Tuesday that the comedy duo Desus Nice (a.k.a. Daniel Baker) and the Kid Mero (a.k.a. Joel Martinez) would end both their creative partnership and their excellent Showtime late-night show, many in the comedy world were perplexed. These guys had a great gig, were landing guests like Presidents Biden and Obama and Denzel Washington, and seemingly had the network’s full support. But the rift that led to the implosion was pretty clear to insiders at the show.

Here’s what happened, according to five separate sources. Shortly after Thanksgiving, Showtime asked that Victor Lopez, the duo’s longtime manager and a credited producer on Desus & Mero, no longer attend tapings or appear in meetings. Lopez had been accused of asshole behavior, including bullying, screaming and generally making people on the show feel bad. Several formal complaints had been made, according to two sources. (Showtime and reps for the duo declined to comment; Lopez could not be reached.)

Desus agreed with Showtime and wanted Lopez out, but Mero is said to have felt loyal to their manager, who had been with the Bronx-raised duo for years. The comics first became big on Black Twitter, were brought together for a podcast for Complex, then another pod, Bodega Boys, that led to a show on Viceland, and then, for the past four seasons, on Showtime. Lopez was there for pretty much all of it, and Mero resisted booting him, I’m told.

As the dispute metastasized, people started noticing. The duo stopped posting podcast episodes in November, which raised eyebrows among fans. Mero quietly left their longtime agent Christina Bazdekis, and lawyer, Victoria Cook, and signed in February with WME and Ziffren Brittenham by himself. The stars talked less and less during the show’s fourth season, which concluded in June. Desus hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live solo earlier this summer. Last week, responding to some fan tweets suggesting the end of the podcast, Desus said that their followers “deserved better than this ending.” And at the MLB All-Star Game’s celebrity softball exhibition last weekend, I’m told they arrived and participated in activities separately. Then, Tuesday, the announcement from Showtime. Desus is already teasing a new project.”

Desus like, im trying to get bigger, I can't be associated with a dude people dont fuck with. And Mero like this is our lane, we got here, with him, and we can do our thing here with him.

And I agree if you're Desus and you have bigger ambitions, this dude can't ride with you.

i mean, if you believe that Math Hoffa interview, Mero more street and Desus more "saavy" for lack of a better term.

A dude who is more street definitely more likely to be like "this is the team, we ride or die on that."

A more saavy dude gonna be like "gotta let the streets go at some point" meaning if it ain't serving the cause you gotta move on even if people get hurt feelings.

this feels like that if this reporting is correct.

But seems like D&M were his only clients. Which isn't a bad thing, necessarily - but as others have said in here...if you're trying to ascend, you need the people around you to do it as well. I've known a ton of junior managers who didn't grow as fast as their clients and got dropped. It's a necessity, unfortunately. Cold business, sure - but it's a business nonetheless.

If this report is true and he was acting like an asshole - that shit just isn't tolerated anymore. It's a different world.

I don't speak to provoke. I speak because I think our time is short and each moment that we are not our truest selves, and we say what we do not mean because we imagine that is what somebody wants us to say, is wasting our time on this Earth - C. Adichie

i'm sure i'm not alone in this.

i mean, i guess it's FUN if you can see the hosts, but podcasts are usually an audio companion for people doing other shit where it's easy to listen and it not be "in the way."

having to actually watch a video is too involved.

It's always the unseen third party homie fucking it up for everyone when things are going good, and some don't want to step up to that person and put 'em in check, or they will be shown the exit.

Personally I think both of them have been thinking a lot about their future endeavors since the pandemic & they had to do the show by zoom & shit.

Maybe a lot was said, talked about, and planned behind the scenes while not knowing if it would be more shows down the line, especially when one is still in the BX, single & trying to upscale his status while the other is married with four kids, moved to NJ, and likes chilling more than socializing; sooner or later they gonna have conflicts of interest.
